Synopsis

Arriving in Oreburgh City, Ash, Dawn and Brock reach the Gym just as Paul walks out with an older man named Ian. The Leader is away, Ian explains, and the Gym specialises in Rock types. Paul heads off to a Pokémon Center while the others go to find the Leader, Roark, at the Oreburgh Mine. Team Rocket are already there, disguised as miners and hiding their faces when Ash asks for directions. A cart rolls out carrying a huge boulder, and Roark polishes it to reveal a fossil destined for the museum, admitting he forgot all about his Gym duties in the excitement. When Team Rocket overhear that fossils can be brought back to life at the museum, they start making plans. Roark returns to the Gym, Paul arrives for his match, and Ian referees a three-on-three battle on a rocky field built to suit the Leader’s Pokémon.

Paul opens with Azumarill against Roark’s Geodude, but Geodude deflects Hydro Pump with Hidden Power and knocks Azumarill out with Rollout, and Paul recalls it with a contemptuous remark about its weakness that angers Ash. Elekid flattens Geodude with one Brick Break, then faces Onix, which shrugs off the recoil of Double-Edge thanks to its Rock Head Ability and scatters Stealth Rock across the field. Elekid’s Static paralyses Onix before Paul recalls it, and Chimchar, stung by the floating stones, tunnels under the paralysed giant with Dig again and again until Onix falls. Roark’s final Pokémon, Cranidos, anticipates the next Dig, makes Chimchar flinch with Zen Headbutt and builds up power with Focus Energy. Chimchar’s Blaze Ability flares up and its Flame Wheel strikes Cranidos’s weak legs, but Cranidos dodges a last Dig and finishes it with Headbutt.

Paul recalls Chimchar coldly, promising to deal with it later, and sends out Elekid again, which takes more damage from the Stealth Rock as it lands. Elekid dodges Flamethrower and cracks Cranidos’s knee with Brick Break, and Static paralyses it once more. Cranidos’s Mold Breaker Ability seems to break the paralysis, but its injured knee throws off its timing and another Brick Break lands on its head. In the final exchange, Zen Headbutt and Brick Break collide in a huge explosion, and after a tense pause Cranidos collapses. Ian declares Paul the winner, and Roark presents him with the Coal Badge. As Paul turns to go, Ash calls out and demands that he stay and watch Ash’s own battle with Roark.
