Overview

XY Ancient Origins Hoopa booster pack

Pokémon TCG: XY—Ancient Origins arrived on August 12, 2015 as the seventh and final expansion of the pure XY series — a compact 98-card set (100 including secret rares) built from Japan’s バンデットリング (Bandit Ring), released June 20, 2015. The mischievous Mythical Hoopa takes centre stage, and the set closes out the Ancient Trait era in style.

Despite its small size, Ancient Origins is one of the most competitively significant XY sets ever printed. It delivered the universal consistency engine Hoopa-EX, the whole Vespiquen archetype, the format-warping disruption of Hex Maniac, and the combo-enabling Forest of Giant Plants — plus three of the most coveted chase cards of the era. Two theme decks, Iron Tide (Water/Metal) and Stone Heart (Grass/Fighting), rounded out the launch.

Ancient power stirs one last time. Hoopa flings open its rings, legendary titans return in dazzling shiny finishes, and the Ancient Trait era reaches its peak — Ancient Origins is a small set with a giant competitive shadow.

Hoopa-EX & Ancient Traits

Hoopa-EX (#36)

Hoopa-EX (#36)

The set’s namesake and one of the most important cards of the whole era. Its Scoundrel Ring Ability lets you search your deck for up to three Pokémon-EX and add them to your hand — an instant consistency engine for the “EX toolbox” decks that defined the format. Like Shaymin-EX before it, Hoopa became near-mandatory tech, at the cost of giving up two Prizes when Knocked Out.

Ancient Origins also closed out the Ancient Trait mechanic — the always-on, Greek-lettered effects (θ Stop, Ω Barrier, α Growth, Δ Plus and more) printed on distinctive three-quarter artwork that ran through the ORAS-era sets.

Vespiquen & Combo Decks

Ancient Origins handed competitive players one of the era’s cheapest, hardest-hitting attackers and the Stadium that made a whole family of combo decks possible.

Vespiquen (#10)

Vespiquen (#10)

Its Bee Revenge attack costs a single Energy and does more damage for every Pokémon in your discard pile. Fuelled by discard engines and a wide bench, Vespiquen became a genuine tier-one deck — hitting for well over 100 for one Energy.

Forest of Giant Plants (#74)

Forest of Giant Plants (#74)

A Stadium that lets Grass Pokémon evolve the turn they’re played — even on turn one. It broke the game’s evolution rules wide open and enabled explosive Vileplume and Vespiquen combo shells.

Disruption & Support

Hex Maniac (#75)

Hex Maniac (#75)

One of the most format-defining Supporters of the XY era: until the end of your opponent’s next turn, they can’t use any of their Pokémon’s Abilities. Hex Maniac was the answer to Shaymin-EX and Hoopa-EX draw engines, and it warped deck-building for years.

Ace Trainer (#69)

Ace Trainer (#69)

A catch-up Supporter that rewards the player who’s behind on Prizes with a big refresh — a clever comeback tool that also shuffled the opponent’s options. (The set’s Lysandre reprint at #78 rounded out the disruption package with its trusty gust effect.)

Mega Evolutions & Pokémon-EX

Ancient Origins is stacked with Mega Evolutions and Pokémon-EX across every type:

Giratina-EX (#57)

Giratina-EX (#57)

A Dragon control powerhouse whose Chaos Wheel attack locks your opponent out of Special Energy, Tools and Stadiums — a defining card of “item/energy-lock” control decks.

M Sceptile-EX (#85)

M Sceptile-EX (#85)

A Grass Mega that spreads damage and thrives with Forest of Giant Plants acceleration.

M Ampharos-EX (#28)

M Ampharos-EX (#28)

A Lightning Mega with heavy paralysis-and-damage pressure.

M Tyranitar-EX (#92)

M Tyranitar-EX (#92)

A hard-hitting Darkness Mega that punishes the board with discard and raw damage.

Lugia-EX (#94)

Lugia-EX (#94)

A Colorless legendary with flexible Energy demands and a striking Full Art.

Kyurem-EX (#25)

Kyurem-EX (#25)

A Water attacker that anchored the set’s Iron Tide theme deck.

Products & Print Versions

Ancient Origins launched with booster packs in four artworks — Hoopa, Groudon, Rayquaza and Tyranitar — plus two theme decks, Iron Tide and Stone Heart. A Hoopa-themed Elite Trainer Box, pin blisters, a collector’s album and portfolios completed the range.

Collector Spotlight: Mega Tyranitar-EX Premium Collection

Mega Tyranitar-EX Premium Collection boxM Tyranitar-EX

One of the coolest collectibles of the Ancient Origins era wasn’t a sealed booster product at all — the Mega Tyranitar-EX Premium Collection. Built around the set’s fearsome Darkness Mega, this box packed in a genuinely generous haul: a foil M Tyranitar-EX promo, a foil Tyranitar-EX promo and a Tyranitar Spirit Link, an eye-catching oversized (jumbo) M Tyranitar-EX card, a Mega Tyranitar collector’s pin and coin, six Pokémon TCG booster packs, and an online code card. It’s a long-time collector favourite for pairing playable promos with a display-worthy jumbo card and pin — a perfect showcase piece for one of Ancient Origins’ signature Mega Evolutions.

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards

Ancient Origins is one of the most collectible sets of the XY era, and it’s all about the three “shiny” secret-rare legendaries. Values reflect near-mint singles and move sharply with grade.

M Rayquaza-EX — Shiny Secret Rare (#98)

M Rayquaza-EX — Shiny Secret Rare (#98)

The crown jewel of the set and one of the most coveted cards of the entire XY era. This alternate shiny-coloured Full Art of Mega Rayquaza is a genuine grail — high-grade copies command eye-watering prices.

Primal Groudon-EX — Shiny Secret Rare (#97)

Primal Groudon-EX — Shiny Secret Rare (#97)

The shiny Primal Groudon secret rare — a stunning red-hued alternate art and a top-tier chase card in its own right.

Primal Kyogre-EX — Shiny Secret Rare (#96)

Primal Kyogre-EX — Shiny Secret Rare (#96)

The shiny Primal Kyogre completes the legendary trio of secret rares — the three of them are the reason Ancient Origins booster boxes are still hunted today.

Hoopa-EX — Full Art (#89)

Hoopa-EX — Full Art (#89)

Beyond the shinies, the Full Art Hoopa-EX is both beautiful and beloved — a fittingly premium version of the set’s most important card.

Trainers’ Mail — Secret Rare (#100)

Trainers’ Mail — Secret Rare (#100)

One of two gold-bordered Item Secret Rares (with Energy Retrieval #99) — a humble consistency card turned collector chase.

Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)

Pound for pound, Ancient Origins is one of the most impactful sets the game has seen — its cards defined the 2015–2016 season and lived on in Expanded for years.

Hoopa-EX (#36)

Hoopa-EX (#36)

Scoundrel Ring made every EX deck faster and more consistent, fetching three Pokémon-EX in one go. It became a defining consistency card of the era.

Vespiquen (#10)

Vespiquen (#10)

The engine of a whole tier-one archetype — a one-Energy attacker whose damage scaled with the discard pile, terrorising the format alongside Forest of Giant Plants.

Hex Maniac (#75)

Hex Maniac (#75)

The great equaliser — shutting off Abilities for a turn neutralised Shaymin and Hoopa engines and warped how every deck was built.

Forest of Giant Plants (#74)

Forest of Giant Plants (#74)

Turn-one Grass evolution unlocked combo decks that simply weren’t possible before — a true build-around Stadium.

Trivia & Points of Interest

  • Three shiny grails. Cards #96–98 are alternate shiny Full Arts of Primal Kyogre-EX, Primal Groudon-EX and M Rayquaza-EX — among the most sought-after cards of the whole XY era, with shiny M Rayquaza-EX (#98) a legendary chase card.
  • The end of an era. Ancient Origins was the last set of the “pure” XY series — the very next expansion, BREAKthrough, introduced Pokémon BREAK cards and a new look.
  • Hoopa changed the game. Scoundrel Ring made fetching Pokémon-EX trivially easy, cementing the fast “EX toolbox” style that dominated the format.
  • Hex Maniac warped the meta. A single Supporter that turned off Abilities became the defining answer to the era’s draw engines.
  • Grass goes fast. Forest of Giant Plants let Grass Pokémon evolve the turn they’re played — even turn one — spawning explosive combo decks.
  • A ring by any other name. The Japanese set, バンデットリング (Bandit Ring), takes its name from Hoopa — the ring-wielding “Djinn” Pokémon at the heart of the set.
