01Overview
Meet Machop
Everything you need to know about the Superpower Pokémon — the creature behind the number.
Machop is the gym rat of the Pokémon world. The Superpower Pokémon is a small, blue-grey humanoid about the size of a young child, with three brown ridges along the top of its head, big red eyes, a flat face and three thin, rib-like stripes on each side of its chest. Look closely and you'll even spot a short, stubby tail – one of a few reptilian touches on what is otherwise a pint-sized bodybuilder.
Every inch of it is muscle, and not the ordinary kind: Machop's muscles never get sore, never cramp and never tire, however hard it pushes them. Just as well, because pushing hard is all Machop wants to do. It passes the time lifting boulders, hefts Graveler about as if they were barbells and studies every style of martial art going. For all its small size, it is said to be able to hurl a hundred grown-ups, or hoist a sumo wrestler onto its shoulders with ease.
“Its whole body is composed of muscles. Even though it's the size of a human child, it can hurl 100 grown-ups.”
Pokédex · Pokémon Red (Japan), Green (Japan), FireRed, Y, Sword & Legends: Z-A · 1996
Machop live in the mountains, away from people, and some set off to travel the world in search of new fighting styles to master. Its dedication grows right along with its muscles – watching them swell day by day only spurs it on – and it is never satisfied, even after training all day long. Instinct steers it towards highly nutritious food that builds muscle efficiently, and once it has trained with its friends long enough to feel confident, it goes looking for a Makuhita to take on.
One of the original 151, Machop has been #066 since Red and Green in 1996; an early working name was simply 'Karate'. At level 28 it becomes the belted Machoke, which turns into four-armed Machamp when traded – and since Sword and Shield, Machamp can even Gigantamax. In Hoenn, Gym Leader Brawly brings a Machop to his Dewford Gym battles in Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.
Fans love Machop for its earnest, can-do spirit. It is the series' dependable labourer, stomping ground flat on building sites and turning up wherever there's heavy lifting to be done, yet it has a soft side too: in Pokémon: Twilight Wings, Bea's Machop cheers up its worn-out Trainer with a snack. Small, sincere and seriously strong, it's the training partner everyone wishes they had.
How big is Machop?

At 0.8 m (2′07″), Machop stands about as tall as a toddler – a little under kitchen-worktop height – and at 19.5 kg (43.0 lb) it weighs about the same as a suitcase packed right up to a 20 kg baggage allowance. Not bad for something that can throw a hundred adults.

Spin-offs & cameos
Super Smash Bros.
Machop's Super Smash Bros. role is a walk-on: it is one of the many Pokémon that cameo in the opening movie of Super Smash Bros. Melee (2001). Its final evolution gets more of a workout in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, where Machamp is a Primary spirit – its Spirit Battle sends you to the Wrecking Crew stage to take on a pair of giant Captain Falcons, four fists between them. Machamp's core is also one of the ingredients for summoning the Super Macho Man spirit from Punch-Out!!, a fitting match for a Pokémon whose name comes from 'macho'.
Pokémon GO
Machop has been flexing in Pokémon GO since launch day, 6 July 2016. It evolves into Machoke for 25 Candy and into Machamp for 100 – or for no Candy at all if you trade for your Machoke – and earns a Candy every 3 km as your buddy, fighting with Karate Chop or Rock Smash (which replaced Low Kick on 16 February 2017) backed up by Low Sweep, Brick Break or Cross Chop. Shiny Machop first appeared on 5 March 2019 during Battle Showdown 2019. Its big day was Machop Community Day on 16 January 2021: any Machoke evolved during the event, or up to two hours afterwards, became a Machamp that knew the exclusive move Payback, with the ticketed Special Research 'Straight to the Top, Machop!' alongside. It returned for a Community Day Classic on 24 May 2025, when Machoke evolved up to 31 May learned Payback once more. Shadow Machop arrived on 10 June 2020, stomped into one-star Shadow Raids from 22 May 2023 and could be Shiny from 27 March 2024, when Team GO Rocket leader Cliff started using it. Dynamax Machop has turned up in two-star Max Battles since 3 December 2024 – and its final evolution, Machamp, can even Gigantamax.
Its Base Set card, Low Kick and all, is one of the cards you can collect and duel with in the Game Boy adaptation.
Catch it at Rock Mountain or Indigo Plateau, on either the Red or the Blue Field.
Machop flexes in full 3D among the original 151, and the game's Pokédex claims it is so muscular it can raise bulges anywhere on its body.
Back for more battles – and its Pokédex entry changes depending on which Game Boy game is plugged in.
The Japan-only sequel has three Machop cards to collect: the Base Set original, its Team Rocket card and a card from the Japanese vending sheets.
Machop is one of the many Pokémon that cameo in the game's opening movie.
Scanned in from Expedition-era e-Reader cards, this minigame puts you in Machop's shoes, smashing falling rocks. Score 50 or more and it evolves into Machoke; hit 100 and it goes all the way to Machamp.
Catch it in the Cave area on both the Ruby and the Sapphire Field.
A common piece in Endless Level 27, Forever Level 27 and Mr. Who's Den.
Answer the personality quiz as a Brave boy and you'll play as Machop. Wild ones can be recruited in Buried Relic and Wish Cave, and they settle in Mt. Discipline. 'I'd fight even against a hundred foes!' it boasts.
Found in Krokka Tunnel, Machop can Crush small rocks for you – the Browser notes how much power it packs into its small body.
Recruit one on Mt. Bristle, in Labyrinth Cave or in the Final Maze.
Lives on the Peril Cliffs. Its Browser entry says it attacks by punching and launching orbs of aura power.
Mt. Bristle, Labyrinth Cave and the Final Maze are still the places to recruit one.
Look for it in Cheerful Meadow.
Found in Pugilis, Machop fights with Karate Chop – and evolves into Machoke not at a set level but once its Attack reaches 86.
Catch it on Roseus Center's Stage 242. Its skill, Pummel, boosts the damage done by every Fighting type in the combo.
Complete Machop's Connection Orb mission and it joins your team – one of its lines is simply 'Muscle! Muscle!'
Around since launch day, Machop had its own Community Day on 16 January 2021, when evolving Machoke gave Machamp the exclusive move Payback.
Turns up on several of the game's seas, the Charizard Sea among them.
Machop can hatch from an Egg to team up with your own player character, then evolve into Machoke and Machamp.
The personality quiz now hands Machop to Brave players of either gender, and it can be your partner too. Wild ones wait in Buried Relic and Wish Cave.
Machamp, a melee All-Rounder, starts every match as Machop, evolving into Machoke at level 5 and Machamp at level 9.
Listed as #156 in Pokopia's Pokédex, which reuses Diamond's line about Machop hefting a Graveler to strengthen its whole body.
Moves
Red and Blue's Machop was a no-nonsense brawler with just six level-up moves: a Normal-type Karate Chop to start, then Low Kick, Leer, Focus Energy, its trademark Seismic Toss and finally the reckless Submission at 46. TMs did the rest, from Mega Punch and Counter to a surprising Fire Blast. Gold and Silver made Karate Chop a true Fighting move and added Vital Throw and the crit-happy Cross Chop, Ruby and Sapphire crowned the list with DynamicPunch and handed out Bulk Up and Brick Break as TMs, and Diamond and Pearl brought Wake-Up Slap plus egg moves such as Bullet Punch and Close Combat.
Later games keep sharpening the karate kit. Black and White add Low Sweep, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire speed up the whole list and slip in Knock Off, Dual Chop and Bulk Up, and Let's Go saves Superpower for level 36. Sword and Shield retire Karate Chop and finish with Double-Edge, Legends: Arceus trims the list to eight moves with Mach Punch and Close Combat, and although Machop sits out Scarlet and Violet, Legends: Z-A teaches it Brutal Swing and Detect and still saves Dynamic Punch for last.
Signature moves
Machop's very first move in Red and Blue, back when it was Normal-type. Gold and Silver made it a true Fighting move, and it stayed on the level-up list right up to Ultra Sun, Ultra Moon and Let's Go before Sword and Shield retired it.
Learnt at level 20 in Red and Blue, then a starting move in every core game from Gold and Silver to Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. Since Ruby and Sapphire it hits harder the heavier the target is.
The trademark throw that deals damage equal to Machop's level. It is on the level-up list in every core game from Red and Blue (level 39) to Sword and Shield (level 40), and Let's Go teaches it at 12.
The original big finish at level 46 in Red and Blue, and TM17 as well. This reckless tackle also hurts the user; it stayed on the level-up list up to Ultra Sun, Ultra Moon and Let's Go, but in Sword and Shield it has to be bred onto a Machop.
Arrived at level 37 in Gold and Silver: a 100-power chop with a high critical-hit ratio. It has been in every core level-up list since, up to level 48 in Sword and Shield, with only Let's Go and the Legends games leaving it out.
TM01 in Gold and Silver, then the level-49 finale from Ruby and Sapphire. It hits only half the time, but every hit leaves the target confused, and it is still Machop's last level-up move in Legends: Z-A, at level 54.
The bodybuilder's move, raising Attack and Defense together. A TM ever since Ruby and Sapphire, it joined the level-up list in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire (level 37), and both Legends games teach it by level-up too.

Generation I · Red, Green, Blue & Yellow6 level-up · 23 TM/HM
In Red and Blue, Machop lives in Rock Tunnel and on Victory Road, while Yellow puts it on Route 10 and in Rock Tunnel. The levels are the same in all four games: it starts with Karate Chop, which is a Normal-type move in this generation, then learns Low Kick at 20, Leer at 25, Focus Energy at 32, Seismic Toss at 39 and Submission at 46. The TM case adds heavy hitters such as Mega Punch, Mega Kick, Earthquake and Rock Slide, plus Counter and a surprising Fire Blast. In Generations I to III a move's type decides whether it is physical or special, so Machop's Fighting attacks run off its Attack while Fire Blast uses its Special stat. 'Transfer' lists moves from Gold, Silver and Crystal that a Machop can bring back through the Time Capsule, including Thrash from the event Machop handed out at the Pokémon Center New York.

Machop lives in Rock Tunnel and Mt. Mortar in Gold, Silver and Crystal, and the Goldenrod Department Store offers one in a trade (for a Drowzee in Gold and Silver, an Abra in Crystal). Karate Chop becomes a proper Fighting-type move and moves to level 13, Low Kick is now a starting move, and Foresight, Vital Throw (a throw that always hits but goes last) and the powerful Cross Chop all join, with Submission closing the list at 49. The new TM case brings DynamicPunch, Rock Smash, Detect and all three elemental punches, and Crystal's move tutor can teach Flamethrower. Encore, Light Screen and Meditate can be bred in from Mr. Mime and friends, and Rolling Kick from Hitmonlee or Hitmontop. The event Machop from the Pokémon Center New York came with Thrash and False Swipe. Categories still follow the move's type, Hidden Power's depends on its calculated type, and Curse has a mystery type all of its own. 'Transfer' lists Red, Blue and Yellow TM moves that can come forward through the Time Capsule.

Generation III · Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed & LeafGreen (tutor data also covers XD)12 level-up · 23 TM/HM · 7 egg · 19 tutor
Machop lives on Route 112, the Fiery Path and Jagged Pass in Ruby and Sapphire (just the Fiery Path and Jagged Pass in Emerald), and on Mt. Ember, in Rock Tunnel and on Victory Road in FireRed and LeafGreen; it can't be caught in Colosseum or XD. The levels are the same in all five games: Foresight moves to 22, Revenge arrives at 25, Submission comes earlier at 37 with Cross Chop at 40, and DynamicPunch becomes the level-49 finale. Low Kick now hits harder the heavier the target is, so it has no fixed power. TMs add Focus Punch, Bulk Up and Brick Break, and Rock Smash becomes HM06. Counter and SmellingSalt are new egg moves, and Rock Slide needs chain breeding through Spinda. Tutor games are FireRed/LeafGreen, Emerald and XD: FireRed and LeafGreen teach ten moves, including Counter and Mega Punch; Emerald teaches 19, adding DynamicPunch and the three elemental punches; and XD offers six to a Machop traded in.

Generation IV · Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold & SoulSilver13 level-up · 35 TM/HM · 13 egg · 11 tutor
Machop lives on Routes 207, 208 and 210 and Mt. Coronet in Diamond and Pearl (Routes 206, 207, 210 and 211 in Platinum), and in Cliff Cave, Rock Tunnel, Mt. Mortar and the Safari Zone in HeartGold and SoulSilver, where the Goldenrod Department Store again trades one for a Drowzee. This is the first generation in which every move has its own physical or special category: Machop's punches and chops are physical, while the new Focus Blast TM is a special Fighting attack. Most moves arrive a little earlier, with Karate Chop at 10, Foresight at 13 and Submission at 31, the new Wake-Up Slap comes at 34, and DynamicPunch now ends the list at 46. TMs add Focus Blast, Poison Jab, Payback and Fling, and HM08 Rock Climb. Bullet Punch (from Hitmonchan), Close Combat and the elemental punches are new egg moves, with Power Trick in HeartGold and SoulSilver only. Platinum's tutors teach Superpower, Vacuum Wave and the elemental punches, and HeartGold and SoulSilver add Headbutt, Low Kick and Role Play. 'Transfer' lists Generation III tutor moves.

Generation V · Black, White, Black 2 & White 214 level-up · 36 TM/HM · 14 egg · 11 tutor · 2 event
Machop is found in White Forest in White; Black has no wild Machop, and Black 2 and White 2 don't either, so there it has to be traded in. A Machop met in the Pokémon Dream World's Rugged Mountain could arrive knowing Bullet Punch or Helping Hand. Low Sweep, a kick that also lowers the target's Speed, joins at 13, and the rest of the list moves back a few levels, with DynamicPunch again closing at 49. TMs bring Low Sweep, Smack Down, Bulldoze, Retaliate, Work Up and Incinerate, while Heavy Slam, Knock Off and Tickle are new egg moves. Black 2 and White 2's tutors teach 11 moves, including Dual Chop, Knock Off, Superpower and Low Kick. 'Transfer' lists moves from Generations III and IV.

Generation VI · X, Y, Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire17 level-up · 40 TM/HM · 15 egg · 11 tutor
Machop lives in Glittering Cave in X and Y, and back on Route 112, the Fiery Path and Jagged Pass in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. X and Y keep Black and White's levels, so there are two columns: Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire bring most moves forward and add Knock Off at 21, Dual Chop at 31 and Bulk Up at 37, with Dynamic Punch now the level-45 finale. Move names get their modern spellings (Dynamic Punch, Thunder Punch, Smelling Salts), Knock Off rises to 65 power and Submission drops to 20 PP. The new Power-Up Punch TM raises Machop's Attack every time it lands. Rock Smash is TM94 in X and Y but HM06 in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, where TM94 is Secret Power and all 11 tutor moves, Focus Punch among them, are found. Quick Guard is a new egg move, and Knock Off can now be passed down from another Machop, Machoke or Machamp. 'Transfer' lists moves from Generations III to V.

Generation VII · Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon17 level-up · 33 TM/HM · 15 egg · 11 tutor
Machop lives in the Farthest Hollow of Ten Carat Hill in Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, and in Sun and Moon a trainer on Route 2 will swap one for a Spearow. One level list covers all four games and matches Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon's tutors teach the same 11 moves as Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, and Bullet Punch can now also be bred from Pangoro. Dig, Power-Up Punch, Retaliate and Rock Smash are no longer TMs, so they only come with a Machop sent from an earlier game. The transfer list now reaches back to Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver and Crystal, whose Virtual Console releases can send Pokémon forward.

Generation VIII · Sword & Shield (incl. Expansion Pass), Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl15 level-up · 78 TM/HM · 18 egg · 1 tutor
Sword and Shield: Machop lives on Route 3, around Lake Miloch, at the Watchtower Ruins, Giant's Seat, Giant's Mirror and in the Stony Wilderness, and also turns up in Max Raid Battles. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl: Routes 207, 208 and 210 and Mount Coronet, plus the Grand Underground's Spacious Cave, Grassland Cave, Whiteout Cave and Sunlit Cavern. One level-up list serves both pairs, with a new move roughly every four levels: Revenge at 8, Knock Off at 16, Strength at 29, Seismic Toss at 40 and Cross Chop at 48, and Double-Edge as the new level-52 finale. Karate Chop, Foresight, Wake-Up Slap and Submission have left the list, though Submission survives as an egg move. TMs, TRs and egg moves are marked SwSh or BDSP; TRs are Sword and Shield's single-use Technical Records, which bring Close Combat, Superpower and Reversal. Coaching, which powers up Machop's partners in Double Battles, comes from the Expansion Pass move tutor. In Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Submission needs chain breeding through the Chimchar line, and Tickle can only come from a Machop-line parent that already knows it. The transfer list gathers older moves that only come with a Machop moved up from an earlier game; many of them, such as Karate Chop, Return and Hidden Power, can't be used in Sword and Shield.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus8 level-up · 11 tutor
Machop turns up in four of Hisui's five wild areas: the Obsidian Fieldlands (Oreburrow Tunnel and near Obsidian Falls), the Cobalt Coastlands (near Ginkgo Landing and on the Castaway Shore), the Coronet Highlands (Bolderoll Ravine and near Cloudcap Pass) and the Alabaster Icelands (Icebound Falls, Arena's Approach and Snowfall Hot Spring), with massive mass outbreaks in the last two. Moves work differently here: each has a level at which it is learnt and a higher level at which it is mastered, after which it can be used in strong or agile style. Power is given for normal, strong and agile style, and accuracy for normal and strong style. The list is just eight moves: Tackle, Rock Smash and Bullet Punch early on, then Double Hit, which in this game is a status move that leaves Machop primed so its attacks hit harder for a few turns, followed by Mach Punch at 22, Bulk Up at 25, Double-Edge at 34 and Close Combat at 43. There are no TMs or breeding; the move tutor teaches 11 moves, including the three elemental punches and Flamethrower.

Machop cannot be obtained in Scarlet and Violet, so it has no learnset there. Its Generation IX home is Legends: Z-A.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A (incl. Mega Dimension)13 level-up · 32 TM/HM
Machop lives in Wild Zone 12 in the Bleu District and Wild Zone 8 in the Jaune District, and the Mega Dimension expansion adds it to Hyperspace Lumiose's 1★ and 3★ Fighting-type wild zones. Moves here have no PP or accuracy columns: each has the level at which it is learnt, the level at which it becomes a Plus Move, its power and its cooldown. The list starts with Leer and Rock Smash, picks up Power-Up Punch at 12, Brutal Swing at 14, Bullet Punch at 16 and Knock Off at 18, adds Detect at 36 and Double-Edge at 44, and ends with Dynamic Punch at 54. Its 32 TMs include Close Combat, Drain Punch, Focus Blast and Comet Punch. Some moves are reworked in this game, so powers are as listed for Z-A (Bullet Punch 30, Comet Punch 30, Dual Chop 45). There is no breeding and there are no tutors.

Machop in the anime
Debut EP029The Punchy Pokémon · First major role EP265Pop Goes the Sneasel · Its appearances on screen, and 2 other trainers who raised one.
Machop has never travelled with Ash, but the Superpower Pokémon has been throwing its weight around the anime since its first bout. It debuted in the opening round of the P1 Grand Prix, battering Ash's Primeape with Karate Chop and Seismic Toss until Primeape started listening to Ash and fought back to win. In Hoenn it became the opening act for Dewford Town's surf-loving Gym Leader Brawly, knocking out Taillow in their first Gym battle and returning for the rematch that earned Ash the Knuckle Badge.
Away from the Gyms, Machop tends to turn up wherever there is heavy lifting or a scrap to be had: teaming up with a Machoke and a scheming Sneasel to block the way to a shrine's sacred flame, chasing a runaway Psyduck for the wealthy Emily alongside the rest of its evolutionary family, stomping the ground flat for a new Gym in Vermilion City, and lining up for sumo bouts, pancake races and ping-pong tournaments. In Pokémon: Twilight Wings, a Machop even plays the caring sidekick to Galar's Bea, handing its worn-out Trainer a snack to keep her going.
Other trainers’ Machop

First seen: AG020Brave the Wave
Dewford Town's surfing Gym Leader sends Machop out first in both of his Gym battles against Ash. In their first meeting it soaks up a barrage of Wing Attacks from Taillow, keeps getting back up and knocks it out with Cross Chop, but Treecko proves trickier: Machop rolls clear of every Pound and dodges a Quick Attack, only for Treecko to slip behind it and finish it with Pound (AG020). Brawly's Makuhita then evolves into Hariyama and wins him the match. In the rematch, Treecko sidesteps Machop's Karate Chops until a geyser launches Machop into a Cross Chop and Ash recalls Treecko just before impact. His newly caught Corphish takes over and knocks Machop out with Bubble Beam and Crabhammer, and Ash goes on to win the Knuckle Badge (AG031).

First seen: AG140Sitting Psyduck
Emily, a wealthy girl who lives in a mansion, keeps the whole Machop family as her Superpower Pokémon: Machop, Machoke and Machamp. When her Psyduck runs away, the trio track it down and corner it in a stream, and Machop takes a swing at Ash's Phanpy with Karate Chop, only to be bowled over by Rollout; a Thunderbolt from Pikachu then sends all three running. Later, when Team Rocket net Psyduck and Phanpy, Machoke and Machamp haul the balloon back down while Machop sets to work freeing the captives (AG140).

Ash & Machop
Ash has never caught a Machop, but he keeps running into them in battle. His Primeape's opening bout at the P1 Grand Prix was against a Machop (EP029). In Dewford Town, Brawly opened both of their Gym battles with his Machop: it knocked out Taillow before falling to Treecko (AG020), then lost to Ash's newly caught Corphish in the rematch that won Ash the Knuckle Badge (AG031).

Machop in the Pokémon TCG
35 cards since 1999, oldest first. Tap any card to see it full size.
Machop has been flexing in the card game since day one. It was in Japan's very first Expansion Pack in October 1996 and reached English players in Base Set in January 1999, a 50 HP Basic with one Low Kick. It has stayed an honest Fighting-type Basic: no ex, EX, GX, V or Mega card, every main-set print a Common, and a move list that reads like a martial-arts syllabus, from Karate Chop, Knuckle Punch and Dual Chop to Submission, Mach Punch and four helpings of Low Kick. Along the way it picked up a few characters: Giovanni's Machop in Gym Challenge, whose Fury Punch grows with every hit it takes, a glossy Japanese vending-machine card, e-Reader cards in Expedition and Skyridge, and a 2014–15 Pokémon League season named after it.
Its art tells the story of the game's changing styles. Ken Sugimori drew it three times, and Mitsuhiro Arita's original painting returned in a retro frame for Evolutions twenty years on. Later artists put Machop into the wider world: sui's Plasma Blast card features the Pokémon Transfer Lab, Kouki Saitou's Furious Fists Machop competes in a town tournament spread across a row of cards, and Crimson Invasion's Mankey tips its hat to Miki Tanaka's Skyridge picture. In 151 it got card number 066, matching its Pokédex number. Pokémon TCG Pocket has given three classic pictures, by Kyoko Umemoto, Mina Nakai and Atsuko Nishida, a second life, and added Shin Nagasawa's Shiny Machop.

Machop in manga, books & other media
From the earliest manga to story books and songs.
In print, Machop is all muscle. Pokémon Adventures named a chapter after it, Karate Machop!, in which Bruno's army of Machop tears up Pewter City and Brock has to step in, and later gave Gym Leader Brawly one that falls to Sapphire's Combusken before growing into a Machoke. Elsewhere it pounds the food for an arrogant chef-Trainer in Yeah! I Got Pokémon!, hangs out in Giovanni's workout room in Pocket Monsters and throws a sneaky elbow in a Sinnoh Contest. Its starring role came in 1998, in the Japanese clay-model picture book Let's Make Pizza, Wanriky!, where its strength wrecks the dough but builds a perfect stone oven. It also stands in for Santa's reindeer in the Pokémon cast's reading of The Night Before Christmas, and inspires Ash to get fit in a Pokémon Learning League lesson.

Machop trivia
Name origins, design secrets and the facts that make Machop such a fan favourite.
What’s in a name?
Machop is a punchy mash-up of 'macho' – manly, and the Spanish and Portuguese word for 'male' – and 'chop', as in a karate chop. Its Japanese name, ワンリキー (Wanrikī, trademarked as Wanriky), is an alternative reading of 腕力 wanryoku, 'arm strength' or physical strength, built from 腕 wan (arm) and 力 riki (strength). Mandarin uses the same two characters, 腕力 (Wànlì). Elsewhere the name gets even more macho: in French it's Machoc, from macho and choc (shock or impact); in German it's Machollo, from 'Macho' and 'Proll', a scornful word for someone loutish and vulgar; and in Korean it's 알통몬 (Altongmon), from altong, bulging biceps.
Design origins
Machop looks like a bodybuilder in miniature – albeit one with a few reptilian touches, from its face and the three plate-like crests on its head to its little tail and blue-grey colouring. Martial arts were part of the plan from the start: in the beta of Red and Green, Machop's English placeholder name was 'Karate' (also written 'Kara-tee'), and its evolutions followed suit as 'Kungfo' for Machoke and 'Judoh' for Machamp. The family sits right after Abra, Kadabra and Alakazam in the Pokédex, and the two lines mirror each other neatly: three Human-Like stages, mostly male, each finishing with a trade evolution – brawn on one side, brains on the other.

Did you know?
- Sort every Pokémon's Japanese name in gojūon order – the Japanese equivalent of alphabetical order – and Machop's Wanrikī comes last.
- Machop has a near-twin in Unova's Timburr: both are pure Fighting types with Guts, a 3:1 male-to-female ratio, a base stat total of 305 and identical Attack, Sp. Def and Speed.
- The likeness goes further: Machop and Timburr both first evolve in their twenties, finish their evolution by trade, and are the Pokémon you'd expect to find on a building site in their home regions.
- In the Red and Green beta, Machop's English placeholder name was 'Karate' – a neat fit for a Pokémon that trains in every martial art.
- Back in Gold, Silver and Crystal, Vital Throw was Machop's signature move – it learned it at level 31.
- Machop, Machoke and Machamp all share one title: the Superpower Pokémon.
- Gym Leader Brawly fields a Machop at the Dewford Gym: Lv. 17 in Ruby and Sapphire, Lv. 16 in Emerald and Lv. 14 in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.
- In Gold and Silver you can trade a Drowzee for a Machop in the Goldenrod Department Store; in Crystal, the trader wants an Abra instead.
- In December 2002 the New York City Pokémon Center handed out Lv. 5 Machop that knew Thrash for Gold, Silver and Crystal, followed in January 2003 by Machop with False Swipe.
- Take the personality quiz in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Team as a Brave boy and you'll spend the adventure as a Machop.
- In Pokémon Conquest, Machop ignores levels altogether: it evolves into Machoke once its Attack stat reaches 86.
- The e-Reader minigame Machop at Work lets you play as Machop smashing falling rocks – and a high enough score evolves it.
- Pokémon Stadium's Pokédex says Machop is so covered in muscle that it can raise bulges anywhere on its body.
- Platinum, Black and White go one better than barbells: they say Machop can easily heft and throw several Geodude at once.
- Ultra Sun's Pokédex reveals Machop's ambition: once it has trained with its friends long enough to feel confident, it challenges Makuhita to a battle.
- In Pokémon GO, Machamp evolved during Machop Community Day (16 January 2021) learned the exclusive move Payback.
