01Overview
Meet Machoke
Everything you need to know about the Superpower Pokémon — the creature behind the number.
Machoke is the Superpower Pokémon, the middle chapter of the Machop family's story. At level 28 little Machop bulks up into a 1.5-metre bodybuilder with blue-grey skin, a faintly reptilian face with a short snout and narrow red eyes, and three brown ridges along the top of its head. Dark red stripes run down its muscular arms, black markings on its lower body look like a pair of briefs, and its chest is so well developed that it bulges out over its belt.
That belt is the key to Machoke. It always wears a black-and-gold power-save belt, styled rather like a wrestling champion's, and it is not there for show: Machoke's body is so powerful that it needs the belt to regulate its movements – without it, one entry warns, it would be unstoppable. Emerald even claims that it is so dangerous no one has ever removed it, yet Ultra Sun reveals that Machoke takes the belt off itself when it meets a truly mighty opponent, and then unleashes its full power.
“Its formidable body never gets tired. It helps people by doing work such as the moving of heavy goods.”
Pokédex · Pokémon Red (Japan), Green (Japan), FireRed & Shield · 1996
The rest of the Pokédex reads like a strongman's highlight reel. Its thoroughly toned muscles are as hard as steel; it can hold a sumo wrestler aloft on a single finger and lift a dump truck with one hand. It always goes at full power yet never gets tired, its muscles grow thicker after every battle, and even standing still it gives off an amazing sense of strength. Small wonder that its physique is a popular subject for sculptors.
For all that brawn, Machoke is a gentle giant with a work ethic to match. Despite its incredible strength it is said to be always modest, and it happily helps people with heavy labour – moving goods, carrying cargo and, in old Hisui, pitching in with construction and clearing land – because it knows the work is good training for its muscles. It does its bodybuilding every day, and on its days off it heads for the fields and mountains to exercise.
To fans, Machoke is the Pokémon world's go-to removals crew – a familiar sight on building sites and heavy-lifting jobs in the anime, where Cianwood Gym Leader Chuck's main Pokémon – and close friend – is a Machoke. In the games it is a trusted lieutenant for Gym Leaders Maylene and Korrina, and one half of a classic trade evolution: ever since 1996, turning it into the four-armed Machamp in the main games has meant trading it to a friend (Legends: Arceus lets a Linking Cord do the job instead).
How big is Machoke?

At 1.5 m, Machoke would look an average 12-year-old in the eye – but at 70.5 kg it weighs as much as a grown man, and it all seems to be muscle.

Spin-offs & cameos
Pokémon GO
Machoke has been in Pokémon GO since launch day on 6 July 2016. A Machop evolves into it for 25 Candy, and reaching Machamp normally costs another 100 – unless you trade it first: since 10 January 2020, a Machoke you've received in a trade evolves for no Candy at all. As a buddy it earns Candy every 3 km. Shiny Machoke arrived on 5 March 2019 during Battle Showdown 2019, by evolving a Shiny Machop, and Shadow Machoke followed on 10 June 2020 (purifying one swaps Frustration for Return). It was a 3-star raid boss from 21 to 27 February 2021, in the Kanto celebration that followed Pokémon GO Tour: Kanto. In battle it throws Low Kick or Karate Chop, backed by Submission, Brick Break or Dynamic Punch – the last of which replaced Cross Chop on 16 February 2017, making Cross Chop an Elite move today.
Machoke's Base Set card can be pulled from the Evolution booster pack and played in your digital deck.
There's no catching Machoke on the tables – evolve a Machop you've already caught to fill in its page.
Flexes in full 3D with its own Stadium Pokédex entry, which insists that for all its incredible strength, Machoke is always modest.
Chuck brings a Machoke to Round 1 of the Gym Leader Castle, and its Pokédex text changes with the cartridge you plug in: Gold's entry for Red, Silver or Crystal, Silver's for Blue, Gold or Yellow.
The Base Set Machoke card returns in the sequel, this time in the Beginning Pokémon booster pack.
In this e-Reader mini-game you play a Machop smashing falling rocks: break 50 of the 100 and it evolves into Machoke at the end – smash all 100 and it carries on into Machamp.
Once again Machoke can only be added to your collection by evolving a Machop.
Lurks in Fiery Field (17F–25F) and deep in Buried Relic (B80F–B87F); once recruited it moves into the Mt. Discipline Friend Area, boasting 'If it's all about power, no one gets the better of me!'
Fiore Browser #081 is found in the Dusk Factory. Once captured, its Crush field move smashes boulders out of your way – and its Browser entry says it takes pride in its strong body.
Can be found and recruited in Aegis Cave.
Almia Browser #162 turns up on the Cargo Ship, attacking by throwing punches and launching shock waves; once captured, it can use the Tackle field move.
Waits in Aegis Cave, just as in Explorers of Time and Darkness.
A Machop evolves into Machoke once its Attack reaches 86. It fights with Wake-Up Slap, and warriors Isa, Masatoshi and Tadatsune can form a perfect link with it.
Shows up on Stage 2 of the Safari Jungle – but only on Mondays.
Waits on Stage 247 in Roseus Center; its Stabilize skill sometimes erases one of the disruptions the opponent has put on the board.
Joins up once you complete Weepinbell's Connection Orb mission – and it can't resist a pun on its own name: 'I have to show off my muscles! Macho!'
Available since launch day; a traded Machoke evolves into Machamp without spending a single Candy.
A cube-shaped Machoke turns up on Tumblecube Island, including the Parched Peak, Nightlight Nook and Happenstance Island stages.
Korrina teams up with Machoke as a sync pair, unlocked by reaching Friendship Level 100 with her in the Trainer Lodge; your own player character can also raise one by evolving a Machop hatched from an Egg.
Turns up in Fiery Field (8F–16F) and Buried Relic (40F–49F).
Joins the café once you complete the Comfey Fruity Sandwich recipe. It specialises in small plates – and it even has a Hiker outfit, in which it serves drinks instead.
Machamp has been playable since launch day on 21 July 2021, and every match it starts out as Machop and evolves into Machoke on the way to its final form.
Ditto meets Machoke in Rocky Ridges, where it teaches Ditto how to use Strength – then asks for help finding Graveler, an old friend that doubled as its training equipment, so that it can apologise.
Moves
Machoke has always fought with its fists and feet. Red and Green gave it Karate Chop, Low Kick, Seismic Toss and a level-52 Submission, with Strength, Counter and even Fire Blast in its TM case. Gold and Silver added Cross Chop and Vital Throw, Ruby and Sapphire made Dynamic Punch the grand finale, and Diamond and Pearl's physical/special split finally let the fire, ice and thunder punches hit with real muscle.
Later games kept adding to the training routine: Wake-Up Slap in Diamond and Pearl, Low Sweep in Black and White, then Knock Off, Dual Chop and Bulk Up in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Sword and Shield stretched its list all the way to a level-66 Double-Edge, Legends: Arceus swapped in Bullet Punch, Mach Punch and Close Combat, and Legends: Z-A works it up through Power-Up Punch, Brutal Swing and Detect to a level-54 Dynamic Punch. Along the way, a deep bench of tutor moves and TMs, from Superpower to Focus Blast, has kept this hard worker ready for any job.
Signature moves
Machoke's trademark chop. It sits in every level-up list from Red and Green to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, plus Let's Go, and in the very first games it was a Normal-type move. Sword and Shield dropped it.
A starting move in every main-series level-up list from Red and Green to Sword, Shield, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. Since Ruby and Sapphire it hits harder the heavier the target, and move tutors and a TR have taught it too.
A reckless take-down that hurts the user as well. It closed the level-up list in Red and Green (52) and in Gold and Silver (61), doubled as TM17 in the first games, and became an egg move in Sword and Shield.
A crossed double chop with a high chance of landing a critical hit. It arrived at level 43 in Gold and Silver and stayed on the level-up list right through to Sword and Shield (60).
Only 50% accurate, but anything it hits is left confused. TM01 in Gold and Silver, it became the level-up finale from Ruby and Sapphire (59) to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon (57), and Legends: Z-A still saves it for level 54.
The bodybuilder's flex, powering up its punches and its defences at once. It has been a TM or TR in every generation since Ruby and Sapphire, joined the level-up list in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire (43), and both Legends games teach it by levelling up.
The heavy-lifting move that shoves boulders aside. Machoke could learn it as HM04 in every game from Red and Green to Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, and Sword and Shield made it a level-31 move.
Complete learnsets
Generation I · Red, Green, Blue & Yellow8 level-up · 23 TM/HM
Red, Blue and Yellow all have wild Machoke in Victory Road, and in every version Machop evolves into it at level 28. Yellow also has an in-game trade in the Underground Path between Routes 5 and 6: hand over a Cubone, and the Machoke you get back evolves into Machamp the moment it arrives. Machoke starts with Karate Chop, Low Kick and Leer, sees Low Kick and Leer turn up again at 20 and 25, and then learns Focus Energy (36), Seismic Toss (44) and Submission (52). Karate Chop is a Normal-type move in these games. In Generations I to III a move's type decides whether it is physical or special, so Fire Blast is a special attack here. Moves keep their original spellings (ThunderPunch). The transfer list shows moves learned in Gold, Silver or Crystal that can travel back through the Time Capsule, from the elemental punches to the Thrash of an event Machop.

Gold, Silver and Crystal place Machoke in Rock Tunnel and Mt. Mortar, and Crystal adds Mt. Silver. Karate Chop becomes a Fighting-type move and moves to level 15, and the list grows to 11 moves with Foresight (25), Vital Throw (34), Cross Chop (43) and Scary Face (52) before Submission closes it at 61. The TM case adds DynamicPunch, Rock Smash, Detect and all three elemental punches, and Crystal's move tutor teaches Flamethrower. Breeding arrives: a Machop can inherit Encore from Mr. Mime, Light Screen from Mr. Mime or Electabuzz, Meditate from Drowzee, Hypno, Hitmonlee or Mr. Mime, and Rolling Kick from Hitmonlee or Hitmontop, and it keeps them after evolving. A Machoke that grew up from the Machop of a New York City Pokémon Center event can know Thrash and False Swipe. Categories still follow the move's type, Hidden Power's depends on the type it turns out to be, and Curse belongs to its own mystery type. The transfer list shows Red, Blue and Yellow TM moves that can come forward through the Time Capsule.

Generation III · Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed & LeafGreen (tutor moves also cover XD)13 level-up · 23 TM/HM · 7 egg · 19 tutor
Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald have no wild Machoke, so evolve a Machop; FireRed and LeafGreen bring it back to Cerulean Cave, Mt. Ember and Victory Road. The level-up list grows to 13 moves: Revenge (25) is new, Submission jumps forward to 41, Cross Chop shifts to 46, and DynamicPunch becomes the level-59 finale. Low Kick now hits harder the heavier its target, which is why its power is shown as a dash. Focus Punch, Bulk Up, Brick Break and Rock Tomb are new TMs. Counter and SmellingSalt join the egg moves, and Rock Slide can come from a Spinda father that inherited it itself (chain breeding). Tutor games are FireRed/LeafGreen, Emerald and XD, and Emerald's tutors add the elemental punches, DynamicPunch and more; Machoke can't be caught in Colosseum or XD. Categories still follow type, and moves from Generations I and II cannot be carried into these games.

Coronet; HeartGold and SoulSilver have it in Cliff Cave, Mt. Mortar, Cerulean Cave, Rock Tunnel and the Safari Zone. It can also arrive from a Generation III game through Pal Park. Bullet Punch, Close Combat and the elemental punches join the egg moves, with Power Trick in HeartGold and SoulSilver only. Generation VI · X, Y, Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire19 level-up · 40 TM/HM · 15 egg · 11 tutor
X and Y have Machoke in the Friend Safari's Fighting-type safaris; in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, evolve a Machop. X and Y keep the Black and White level-up list, while Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire rework it: Knock Off (21), Dual Chop (33) and Bulk Up (43) join, the early moves come sooner (Focus Energy at 3, Karate Chop at 7, Foresight at 9, Seismic Toss at 15) and the big hitters wait a little longer, with Submission at 37, Cross Chop at 47 and Dynamic Punch at 57. The modern spellings Dynamic Punch, Thunder Punch and Smelling Salts arrive, Low Sweep rises to 65 power, Wake-Up Slap to 70 and Knock Off to 65, and Submission drops to 20 PP. Power-Up Punch (TM98) and Confide (TM100) are new TMs; TM94 is Rock Smash in X and Y but Secret Power in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, where Rock Smash is HM06 again. Quick Guard joins the egg moves, Hawlucha can now pass on Encore, and move tutors are Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire only.

Generation VII · Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon19 level-up · 33 TM/HM · 15 egg · 12 tutor
Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon have Machoke in Vast Poni Canyon, and all four share the Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire level-up list. With HMs gone, Strength and Rock Smash can only be brought in from older games, and so can Dig. Swagger is 85% accurate. Move tutors are Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon only and now include Stomping Tantrum. Pangoro can now pass on Bullet Punch, and Meditite or Medicham can pass on Counter.

Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!12 level-up · 21 TM/HM
Machoke can be caught in Victory Road. Let's Go gives it a short, Kanto-flavoured learnset of its own: Bide joins the starting moves and comes back at 8 after Focus Energy (4), and Seismic Toss (12), Karate Chop (16), Brick Break (21), Submission (26), Bulk Up (37) and Superpower (48) follow. There is no breeding and there are no move tutors in these games. The 21 TMs include the three elemental punches, Earthquake, Flamethrower, Fire Blast and Superpower.

Generation VIII · Sword & Shield (incl. the Expansion Pass), Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl15 level-up · 79 TM/HM · 18 egg · 1 tutor
Sword and Shield have Machoke roaming the Wild Area at Axew's Eye, Giant's Seat, Stony Wilderness and Hammerlocke Hills and in several Max Raid Battle dens, and the Expansion Pass adds it to Dynamax Adventures. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl bring back its Sinnoh haunts, from Routes 210 and 211 to Stark Mountain and Victory Road, plus four caves in the Grand Underground. One level-up list covers both pairs of games, and it climbs higher than ever: Revenge from the start, then Low Sweep (12), Knock Off (16), Scary Face (20), Vital Throw (24), Strength (31), Dual Chop (36), Bulk Up (42), Seismic Toss (48), Dynamic Punch (54), Cross Chop (60) and finally Double-Edge (66). Karate Chop, Foresight, Submission and Wake-Up Slap leave the list; Submission becomes an egg move from Hawlucha, Clobbopus or Grapploct, or in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl from the Chimchar family by chain breeding. TMs, TRs and egg moves are marked SwSh or BDSP (TRs are Sword and Shield's single-use Technical Records), and an Expansion Pass move tutor teaches Coaching. In Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Tickle can only be passed down by a Machop, Machoke or Machamp from the Grand Underground that already knows it. Transfer moves flagged as unusable can be brought along but not used in Sword and Shield; a few others are ordinary TMs or egg moves in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

Machoke turns up near Obsidian Falls in the Obsidian Fieldlands, on the Cobalt Coastlands, in the Coronet Highlands and in the Alabaster Icelands, including massive mass outbreaks. Moves work differently here: each is learned at one level and mastered at a later one, after which it can be used in strong or agile style. Power is listed for normal, strong and agile style, and accuracy for normal and strong style. The eight-move list opens with Tackle and builds through Rock Smash (6), Bullet Punch (11), Double Hit (18), Mach Punch (22) and Bulk Up (25) to Double-Edge (34) and Close Combat (43). There are no TMs or breeding; the move tutor teaches 11 moves, including the three elemental punches, Flamethrower, Poison Jab and Rock Slide.

Machoke in the anime
Debut EP029The Punchy Pokémon · First major role EP136Chikorita's Big Upset · Its appearances on screen, and 5 other trainers who raised one.
Machoke has never travelled with Ash, but it has spent its anime career doing exactly what its Pokédex entry promises: lifting, hauling and grappling. From a cameo at the P1 Grand Prix in The Punchy Pokémon (EP029) onwards, it has been the muscle behind construction crews, demolition teams, circus acts and expeditions – saving Nurse Joy's fossil dig from a runaway boulder (EP089), working with a stonecutting crew (DP057) and even delivering a washing machine to Professor Kukui's door (SM057).
In battle, it is a favourite of Fighting-type specialists. Gym Leaders Chuck, Maylene and Korrina each sent a Machoke against Ash, and each fell – to Bayleef for the Storm Badge (EP209), to Staravia at the Veilstone Gym (DP068) and to Fletchinder at the Shalour Gym (XY044). Away from the battlefield, Kenny's barbell-hoisting Machoke helped him win the Sandalstraw Ribbon (DP123), and a gang of Fighting-type toughs learned to respect Ash's Chikorita (EP136).
Other trainers’ Machoke

First seen: EP209Machoke, Machoke Man!
Chuck's Machoke is the Cianwood Gym Leader's sparring partner and close friend – Ash first spots the pair training on the beach just as Machoke sends Chuck flying. Before the Gym battle, Chuck even has it Karate Chop him to get himself fired up. Sent out second against Bayleef, Machoke turned her Vine Whip into a tug-of-war, reeled her in and hit her with Submission, but Bayleef refused to give in and finished it off with Body Slam and Razor Leaf to win Ash the Storm Badge (EP209). A tearful Chuck hugged his partner after its effort, and Machoke later returns in a flashback in Why? Wynaut! (EP255).
- EP209Machoke, Machoke Man! · vs Bayleef Lost

First seen: DP066Lost Leader Strategy!
Maylene's Machoke made its debut in a flashback to her Gym battle with Paul, whose Honchkrow knocked it out with Sky Attack in no time (DP066) – part of a crushing defeat that left the young Gym Leader's confidence in pieces. Once she had found her spirit again, Machoke led off her Gym battle with Ash and gave Staravia a real fight despite the type disadvantage, blocking Quick Attack with Brick Break and landing a heavy Cross Chop. Staravia's Quick Attack and Aerial Ace combination finally brought it down, and after the battle ended in a draw, Maylene judged that Ash had earned the Cobble Badge (DP068).

- DP068A Triple Fighting Chance! · vs Staravia Lost

First seen: XY044Showdown at the Shalour Gym!
Korrina sent Machoke out second in her Gym battle with Ash, after Hawlucha had beaten Mienfoo. It started strongly against Fletchinder – sidestepping Flame Charge, knocking the bird down with Brick Break, following up with Low Sweep and blocking Steel Wing. But when Machoke tried to throw Fletchinder, it clung on and hit back with Razor Wind, and as Machoke gathered a Focus Blast, a second Flame Charge knocked it out. Ash went on to beat Korrina's Mega Lucario with Pikachu and win the Rumble Badge (XY044).
- XY044Showdown at the Shalour Gym! · vs Fletchinder Lost

First seen: EP093Navel Maneuvers
Danny tests challengers at the Navel Gym not with a straight battle but with three trials on a snowy mountain. In the second, each side had three Pokémon carve a sled out of ice, and Danny's Machoke worked alongside Scyther and Nidoqueen using sheer brute force. Ash's team took that round and then won the sled race down the mountain to earn the Sea Ruby Badge (EP093).
- EP093Navel Maneuvers · vs Ash's sled-carving team Lost

First seen: DP123Old Rivals, New Tricks!
Kenny turned his Machoke into a strongman act for the Performance Stage of the Sandalstraw Contest. After a muscle-flexing Focus Energy, Machoke hoisted a barbell three times its own body weight with one arm, swapped arms, and held it steady while Kenny did a handstand on top. The judges loved it, Barry decided on the spot that he wanted to catch a Machoke of his own, and Kenny went on to beat Dawn in the final with Prinplup – saying afterwards that the Sandalstraw Ribbon belonged to Prinplup and Machoke (DP123).
Ash & Machoke
Ash has never owned a Machoke, but he has had to find a way past plenty of them. Bayleef outmuscled Chuck's Machoke to win him the Storm Badge (EP209), Staravia outlasted Maylene's at the Veilstone Gym (DP068) and Fletchinder's Flame Charge stopped Korrina's on the way to the Rumble Badge (XY044). Back in the Orange Islands, Danny's Machoke even helped carve an ice sled in a Navel Gym round that Ash won (EP093).

Anime trivia
- Machoke's anime Pokédex entry comes from Dawn's Pokédex, during Ash's Veilstone Gym battle in A Triple Fighting Chance! (DP068).
- Machoke has three Who's That Pokémon? turns: in the English dub of Turning Over a New Bayleef (EP200) – where, although the dub's picks were random by then, it really does appear in the episode – in the Japanese version of Machoke, Machoke Man! (EP209) and as the Japanese Pokémon Quiz in Showdown at the Shalour Gym! (XY044).
- The anime has mixed Machoke up with its relatives more than once. In the dub of The Punchy Pokémon (EP029) the announcer calls a Machoke 'Machop'; in The Ties That Bind (EP269) the referee, the commentator and even the Pokémon's own cry call the Machamp beaten by Harrison's Sneasel a Machoke; and in A Judgment Brawl (AG129) a Machoke is called Machamp.
- Before Chuck's Gym battle in Machoke, Machoke Man! (EP209), Brock singles out Submission as the move to fear – yet in the games Cross Chop (power 100) hits harder than Submission (80).
- When Korrina's Machoke charged up Focus Blast in Showdown at the Shalour Gym! (XY044), the move was drawn as a bright yellow ball, as in the games; earlier episodes had shown it in light blue.
- Tom Wayland voiced both Maylene's and Kenny's Machoke in the English dub, while Eric Stuart voiced Chuck's.
- In Japan, Machoke starred in Professor Oak's Pokémon Lecture after A Goldenrod Opportunity (EP158), with a senryū poem about its gleaming belt, and in Professor Oak's Pokémon Holo Caster after XY070, with a verse about a Machoke proud of its strength that will carry anything.
- In Sitting Psyduck (AG140), an animation slip twice colours the trunks of Emily's Machoke the same as its skin – once when it uses Cross Chop.
“Machoke, the Superpower Pokémon. With enough strength to lift a giant truck with one hand, Machoke are often used for extremely heavy work.”

Machoke hasn't had a real part in a Pokémon film, a Pikachu short or a TV special: it is a face in the crowd in films such as The Power of One, Destiny Deoxys, The Power of Us and Secrets of the Jungle, without a scene of its own. For Machoke at work, turn to the TV series and the manga.

Machoke in the Pokémon TCG
31 cards since 1999, oldest first. Tap any card to see it full size.
Machoke has been flexing in the Pokémon TCG from day one. It was in Japan's very first expansion in October 1996 and reached English players in Base Set in January 1999, with Ken Sugimori's art and a Submission attack that costs Machoke some of its own HP. The Wizards of the Coast years gave it a whole wardrobe of personalities: Team Rocket's bench-bullying Dark Machoke, Giovanni's reckless Machoke in Gym Challenge, the polite Light Machoke of Neo Destiny, and two e-Reader cards in Expedition and Skyridge. Since then it has been a dependable Uncommon in almost every era, picking up Poké-Bodies, a bench-shielding Ability in Guardians Rising and a steady climb in HP, from 60 to 110. It hasn't had an ex, V or other rule-box card of its own. In Japan, fans could even post a Machoke card with a Bill's PC to get a Machamp promo back, a paper version of trade evolution.
The art tells a story of its own. The early cards range from Sugimori's clean, official look to Mitsuhiro Arita's Dark Machoke for Team Rocket and Miki Tanaka's Light Machoke for Neo Destiny. Later artists started putting Machoke in real places from the games: match drew it in front of Lentimas Town for Plasma Blast, and Arita later set it on Firespit Island from Legends: Arceus for Lost Origin. Evolutions brought Sugimori's Base Set picture back for the 20th anniversary, and 151 added Tetsu Kayama's Illustration Rare, a playful nod to the Machoke Movers. Pokémon TCG Pocket has mostly recycled the classics, with match's, Kouki Saitou's and AKIRA EGAWA's art reused on new cards, but it also gave Machoke a Shiny portrait by Shin Nagasawa.
Cards to know
- Base Set 34/102 — Ken Sugimori's original muscle-bound Machoke, whose Submission hurts itself as well as the opponent. Two copies also went into the red-bordered Trainer Deck A sent out to Pokémon Leagues before the English launch.
- Gym Challenge 42/132 (Giovanni's Machoke) — The boss's gamble in card form: Risky Attack deals 60 for one Energy, but tails means 100 damage to itself, more than its whole 80 HP.
- Neo Destiny 49/105 (Light Machoke) — Machoke with manners. Gentle Kick goes easy on Pokémon that are already hurt, and Return Home sends a Benched friend back to the deck.
- Expedition Base Set 85/165 — Swipe it through the e-Reader and its Dot Code feeds the 'Machop At Work' mini-game. A rare 'Sample' print was made for the e-Reader's New York launch.
- Vending Expansion Sheet 3 (Japan) — A level 24 Machoke, four levels below where Machop evolves. It arrived alongside a 1998 campaign in which posting any Machoke card with a Bill's PC brought a Machamp promo back.
- 151 177/165 — Tetsu Kayama's Illustration Rare salutes the Machoke Movers, and in 2026 it became the secret figure in Japan's Card Illustration Figure Collection.

Machoke in manga, books & other media
From the earliest manga to story books and songs.
Machoke's manga career began on the wrong side of the law. In Kosaku Anakubo's Pocket Monsters, one leads a gang raiding a Celadon City department store before evolving in a fury and ending up as Red's Machamp. Pokémon Adventures named its second chapter after Machoke in Japan ('VS Goriky'), in which a wild Machoke jumps Red in the Viridian Gym and Bulbasaur sees it off with Solar Beam. Later in the same arc, Blue's Machoke evolves while it is on loan to Red, a neat joke for a Pokémon that evolves by trade, and in the Hoenn chapters Brawly's Machoke takes on Groudon and a building full of haunted paintings. Elsewhere it is often the muscle for the bad guys, working for a Team Galactic Grunt in Diamond and Pearl Adventure! and a watch thief in Phantom Thief Pokémon 7, or the sparring partner that turns a Tyrogue into Hitmontop in Yeah! I Got Pokémon! Its day job gets a look in too: a 2002 CoroCoro one-shot of Ruby & Sapphire makes Machoke the removal crew at the hero's new house, and in 2015 it got a jingle of its own, Machoke Movers. In the 2023 live-action drama A Pocketful of Adventures, Hiyama's Machoke wins a round before its Trainer asks for help evolving it. On the bookshelf, Machoke shows off its power-save belt in the Fighting volume of the Pokémon Evolvers flip books.

Machoke trivia
Name origins, design secrets and the facts that make Machoke such a fan favourite.
What’s in a name?
Machoke's English name seems to combine 'macho' – manly, from the Spanish and Portuguese word for 'male' – with 'choke'. During the development of Red and Green it was briefly known in English as Kungfo (also written Kung-foo), a garbled 'kung fu'. Its Japanese name, Goriky (ゴーリキー), comes from 剛力 gōriki, meaning herculean strength. Other languages flex the same muscles: the French Machopeur pairs 'macho' with choppeur (someone who nabs people), the German Maschock adds Schock, the Korean Geunyukmon simply means 'muscle monster', and its Chinese name, 豪力, means 'heroic strength'.
Design origins
Machoke looks like a bodybuilder or pro wrestler with a dash of reptile: the short snout, pointed teeth and ridged head hint at a lizard, while everything below the neck is pure gym. Its black-and-gold power-save belt resembles a wrestling championship belt, the black markings on its lower body read as a strongman's briefs, and its chest is so developed that it spills over the belt. Its colouring has shifted over the years between shades of grey, blue and purple – its skin was purple before X & Y introduced the blue-grey it has today.

Did you know?
- During the development of Red and Green, Machoke's English name was Kungfo – also spelled Kung-foo – a garbled take on kung fu.
- Nobody can agree on Machoke's personality: Pokémon Stadium calls it 'always modest', while The Official Pokémon Handbook says it 'likes its own body way too much'.
- The Pokédex contradicts itself over the belt, too. Emerald says no one has ever removed it, but Ultra Sun says Machoke takes it off itself to face a truly mighty foe.
- Machoke's power-save belt looks very much like the Winner's Belt, a prop for the Pokémon Musical in Black and White.
- Machoke and Unova's Gurdurr are near mirror images: both are pure Fighting types with Guts, a 3:1 male-to-female ratio, a base stat total of 405, a 2 Attack EV yield and a base experience yield of 142, and both need a trade to evolve. Both are familiar faces on construction sites in their home regions, too.
- In Pokémon Yellow, you can trade a Cubone for a Machoke in the Underground Path between Routes 5 and 6. It evolves into Machamp the moment it arrives – but Machoke still registers in your Pokédex.
- In Generation II, Vital Throw – a throw that strikes after most other moves but never misses – was Machoke's signature move.
- Machoke's English Base Set card rewords its Red and Blue Pokédex entry, while the Japanese card uses the original Red and Green entry about a tireless body that moves heavy goods.
- Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon gives Machoke lines that pun on its name: 'I have to show off my muscles! Macho!' when it's healthy, and 'Choke-choke…' when it's flagging.
- In Pokémon Ranger, Machoke's Browser entry says it 'has no trouble crushing big Boulders' – and its Crush field move does exactly that.
- In Pokémon Café ReMix, Machoke has a Hiker outfit that switches its café speciality from small plates to drinks.
- In Pokémon Pokopia, Machoke asks Ditto to track down Graveler – an old friend that also served as its go-to training equipment – so that it can apologise.
- Chuck, the Cianwood Gym Leader, never uses Machoke in Gold, Silver, Crystal or their remakes – but in Pokémon Stadium 2 he brings one to Round 1 of the Gym Leader Castle, and in the anime it is his main Pokémon and a close friend.
