01Overview

Meet Alakazam

Everything you need to know about the Psi Pokémon — the creature behind the number.

Alakazam is the Psi Pokémon, the third and final stage of the Abra line – and a Kadabra only becomes one when it is traded. It stands about 1.5 metres tall on a lean, yellow, almost skeletal frame, with brown armour-like plates over its chest, shoulders, forearms and knees, a long thin snout, narrow eyes and a truly magnificent moustache. Look closely and you can tell the sexes apart: females wear a noticeably shorter one.

Everything about Alakazam comes back to its mind. Its Pokédex entries claim that its brain cells keep multiplying until the day it dies, that its brain can outperform a supercomputer and that its IQ is said to be around 5,000. Because that brain never stops growing, the head gets larger and heavier with age – far too heavy for its neck – so Alakazam simply holds it up with psychokinesis. Researchers in Legends: Arceus even found that its psychic strength rises with the weight of its head.

“It does not like physical attacks very much. Instead, it freely uses extra-sensory powers to defeat foes.”

Pokédex · Pokémon Red (Japan), Green (Japan) & FireRed · 1996

All that brainpower comes at a price. Its muscles are very weak, so it moves its whole body with psychic power and would rather not trade physical blows at all, beating foes with extrasensory tricks instead. The silver spoons it carries in each hand amplify those powers, and it makes them itself – each one unique. Earn its deep trust and it may hand you one, and food eaten with it supposedly tastes wonderful. Less charming for the neighbours: its overflowing psychic power can give anyone nearby a headache.

It never forgets, either. From the moment it hatches it is said to remember everything it experiences, right to the end of its life. Mega Evolution takes the idea to its limit: Mega Alakazam swaps what little muscle it had for pure psychic energy, floats permanently, juggles five spoons and grows a long white beard, while a red organ on its forehead lets it foresee an opponent's every move – if an attack whiffs, it simply saw it coming.

Alakazam has been a heavy hitter since Red and Green, where it was the trade-only reward for patient Abra trainers, the final Pokémon on Sabrina's Saffron City Gym team and a fixture on the rival Blue's Champion line-up. It has since led Sabrina's team at the Pokémon World Tournament, joined her and Blue as a sync pair in Pokémon Masters EX and starred in Pokémon GO's Abra Community Day – a bearded conjuror of a Pokémon whose very name is a magic word.

How big is Alakazam?

Alakazam silhouette
Alakazam1.5 m (4′11″)
Trainer1.60 m (5′03″)

At 1.5 m (4′11″) Alakazam matches Ethan's height when it walks behind him in HeartGold and SoulSilver, and its 48 kg (105.8 lb) – heavy head included – is roughly two fully packed airline suitcases. Mega Alakazam floats in at a shorter 1.2 m without losing a gram.

Spin-offs & cameos

Pokémon GO

Alakazam has been in Pokémon GO since launch day on 6 July 2016, evolving from Kadabra for 100 Abra Candy – or for no Candy at all if that Kadabra came to you in a trade, a neat nod to the main-series games. It was a three-star raid boss from 23 June to 4 November 2017, and Shiny Alakazam made its debut at Pokémon GO Fest 2019 in Chicago on 13 June 2019, with Shadow Alakazam following that September. Abra Community Day on 25 April 2020 gave any Alakazam evolved during the event the exclusive Fast Attack Counter, a move that returned for the December Community Day weekends of 2020 and 2021. Mega Alakazam arrived in Mega Raids on 6 September 2022 during Psychic Spectacular 2022 – Shiny from day one – and its first Mega Evolution costs 200 Mega Energy. It has kept coming back to Mega Raids since, including during Pokémon GO Fest 2026, and its Buddy distance is a short 3 km.

Evolution

It never appears on the tables outright – evolve a Kadabra you've caught to fill in its Pokédex slot.

Battler / Mega Evolution

Moves

Red and Blue's Alakazam was a glass cannon with a small but deadly toolkit: Teleport, Confusion and Disable from the start, Psybeam at 27 and Recover at 31, then a level-38 Psychic powered by its enormous Special stat, with Reflect to finish at 42. Gold and Silver slipped in the slow-burning Future Sight, Ruby and Sapphire added Calm Mind and Trick, and Diamond and Pearl gave the spoon-bender a physical edge with Psycho Cut.

Later games mostly polish the mind games. Black and White slot in Ally Switch and Telekinesis, X and Y push Future Sight to 120 power and let Mega Alakazam use the lot, and Let's Go hands over Calm Mind the moment it evolves. Sword and Shield tidy the list into neat five-level steps, Legends: Arceus slips in Hypnosis and Zen Headbutt, and although Alakazam sits out Scarlet and Violet, Legends: Z-A teaches it Safeguard by level-up plus TMs such as Nasty Plot and Focus Blast.

Signature moves

PsychicPsychic

Alakazam's headline act. It has been in every level-up list since Red and Blue (level 38 there, 35 in Sword, Shield and Legends: Z-A, 43 in Legends: Arceus), and a TM or TR in every game that has them.

PsychicTeleport

Abra's famous vanishing trick never leaves the family: it is a level-1 move for Alakazam in every core game, from Red and Blue to Legends: Z-A.

PsychicKinesis

The spoon-bending distraction that lowers a foe's accuracy. Alakazam has it from the start in every game from Yellow to Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl (Sun and Moon even teach it again on evolving), but both Legends games leave it out.

PsychicConfusion

Its first real psychic punch: a starting move in most games and listed again at level 16 from Red and Blue right up to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. Legends: Arceus makes it wait until level 6, and in Legends: Z-A it comes only from the Move Reminder.

NormalRecover

Alakazam's built-in first aid has been part of every level-up list since Red and Blue, from level 31 there to 25 in Sword, Shield and Legends: Z-A.

PsychicCalm Mind

Arrived at level 33 in Ruby and Sapphire (and as TM04) and has been in every Alakazam level-up list since; Let's Go hands it over on evolving, and Sword and Shield save it for the level-50 finale.

PsychicFuture Sight

The delayed psychic blast arrived at level 31 in Gold and Silver. It grew from 80 power to 100 in Black and White and to 120 from X and Y onwards; only Let's Go and Legends: Arceus leave it out.

Complete learnsets

Generation I · Red, Green, Blue & Yellow10 level-up · 26 TM/HM

Alakazam is never found in the wild in Red, Green, Blue or Yellow: trade a Kadabra and it evolves. Red, Green and Blue list Teleport, Confusion and Disable at level 1, while Yellow swaps that starting pair for Kinesis; after that the four games agree, with Confusion again at 16, Disable at 20, Psybeam at 27, Recover at 31, Psychic at 38 and Reflect at 42. In Generations I to III a move's type decides whether it is physical or special, so every Psychic attack runs off Alakazam's towering Special stat. 'Transfer' lists moves from Gold, Silver and Crystal that an Alakazam can bring back through the Time Capsule.

Gold, Silver and Crystal: trade a Kadabra to evolve it. Future Sight, a Psychic attack that strikes two turns after it is used, joins the list at level 31, while Psybeam (21), Recover (26) and Reflect (45) shuffle around it. The new TM case brings Shadow Ball, Dream Eater, Psych Up, Zap Cannon, DynamicPunch and all three elemental punches. Barrier, Encore and Light Screen can be bred onto an Abra from Mr. Mime (Light Screen from Electabuzz too), and Foresight can only come from an event Abra. Categories still follow the move's type, Hidden Power's depends on its calculated type, and Curse has a mystery type all of its own. 'Transfer' lists Red, Blue and Yellow TM moves that can come forward through the Time Capsule.

Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed and LeafGreen: trade a Kadabra to evolve it. The levels are the same in all five games: Reflect moves up to 23, Recover to 25 and Future Sight to 30, Calm Mind arrives at 33, Psychic comes at 36 and Trick closes the list at 43. TMs add Calm Mind, Skill Swap, Snatch, Taunt, Torment and Shock Wave, and the new egg moves include the three elemental punches and Knock Off. Tutor games are FireRed/LeafGreen, Emerald and XD: Body Slam, Dream Eater, Substitute and Thunder Wave are on offer in all three, and Emerald adds DynamicPunch and the elemental punches. Alakazam can't be caught in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, but one traded in can use its tutors, and Nightmare is an XD exclusive. Role Play has to be learnt as a Kadabra, by level-up, before the trade.

Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold and SoulSilver: trade a Kadabra to evolve it, or bring an Alakazam over from the Generation III games through Pal Park. This is the first generation in which every move has its own physical or special category, so the new level-34 Psycho Cut is a physical attack, as is Zen Headbutt from the tutors. Miracle Eye arrives at 22, Calm Mind at 36, Psychic at 40, Future Sight at 42 and Trick at 46. The TM list grows to 47, with Focus Blast, Energy Ball, Charge Beam, Drain Punch, Grass Knot and Trick Room among the newcomers. Platinum's tutors teach Zen Headbutt, Signal Beam, Trick and the elemental punches, and HeartGold and SoulSilver add Gravity, Headbutt, Magic Coat and Role Play. Guard Swap and Power Trick are new egg moves. Role Play only needs to come from Kadabra in Diamond, Pearl and Platinum. 'Transfer' lists Generation III tutor moves.

Generation V · Black, White, Black 2 & White 216 level-up · 39 TM/HM · 10 egg · 20 tutor

Black has no Alakazam of its own, while White lets you evolve a Kadabra; Black 2 and White 2 offer one in an in-game trade in Accumula Town, in exchange for a Hippowdon. The levels are the same in all four games: Ally Switch comes in at 24 and Telekinesis at 34, Psycho Cut slips to 40, and Future Sight, now 100 power, is learnt at 48 before Trick closes the list at 52. Psyshock arrives as TM03, a special attack that strikes the target's physical defences. Black 2 and White 2's tutors teach 20 moves, from Foul Play and Drain Punch to Magic Room and Wonder Room. Gravity comes from an Abra in the Dream World, and Skill Swap can only be bred from a father that learnt it in an earlier generation. 'Transfer' lists moves from Generations III and IV.

Generation VI · X, Y, Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire16 level-up · 41 TM/HM · 12 egg · 21 tutor

X, Y, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire: trade a Kadabra to evolve it. This is where Mega Alakazam arrives: holding its Alakazite, Alakazam can Mega Evolve in battle and keeps exactly the same moves. Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire reshuffle the levels, so there are two columns: Psychic is learnt at 46 in X and Y but at 38 in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, and Trick closes the list at 50 or 46. Future Sight now hits for 120. TMs add Dazzling Gleam and Confide, and Secret Power (TM94) is Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire only, as are all 21 tutor moves. Kadabra and Alakazam can pass on Ally Switch as an egg move, Psycho Shift needs chain breeding through Spinda, and Skill Swap still has to come from a father that learnt it in an earlier generation.

Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon: trade a Kadabra to evolve it. One level list covers all four games and matches Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, with Kinesis now also learnt on evolving. Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon's tutors teach 24 moves, including Laser Focus, Telekinesis and Ally Switch, and add Psychic Terrain as an egg move from Beheeyem. Role Play only needs to come from Kadabra in Sun and Moon. The transfer list now reaches back to Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver and Crystal, whose Virtual Console releases can send Pokémon forward.

Generation VIII · Sword & Shield (incl. Expansion Pass), Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl14 level-up · 97 TM/HM · 15 egg · 1 tutor

Sword and Shield: from Version 1.2.0 Alakazam can be traded into the base game, and the Isle of Armor brings it to Loop Lagoon, the Insular Sea, the Soothing Wetlands and Challenge Beach, partly as a wanderer and partly in Max Raid Battles. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl: trade a Kadabra to evolve it. One level-up list serves both pairs, in neat steps of five from Psybeam at 5 to Calm Mind at 50, with Psyshock at 30 and Role Play at 40. TMs, TRs and egg moves are marked SwSh or BDSP; TRs are Sword and Shield's single-use Technical Records. Expanding Force comes from the Expansion Pass move tutor. In Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Guard Split and Psycho Shift can only be bred from an Abra-line parent that already knows them. The transfer list gathers older moves that only come with an Alakazam moved up from an earlier generation; many of them, such as Return, Hidden Power and Secret Power, no longer exist in Sword and Shield.

Alakazam lives in the Obsidian Fieldlands, where an Alpha roams Sandgem Flats, and turns up in massive mass outbreaks there and around Lake Acuity in the Alabaster Icelands, as well as in the Cobalt Coastlands' space-time distortions. Moves work differently here: each has a level at which it is learnt and a higher level at which it is mastered, after which it can be used in strong or agile style. Power is given for normal, strong and agile style, and accuracy for normal and strong style. The level-up list is just eight moves, adding Hypnosis and Zen Headbutt to the classics and ending with Psychic at 43 (mastered at 54). There are no TMs or breeding; the move tutor teaches 18 moves, from Dazzling Gleam and Energy Ball to Hyper Beam.

Moves here have no PP or accuracy columns: each has the level at which it is learnt, the level at which it becomes a Plus Move, its power and its cooldown. The list keeps Sword and Shield's tidy steps of five, with Safeguard taking Role Play's old slot at 40 and Calm Mind still the level-50 finale; Confusion comes only from the Move Reminder. Its 32 TMs include Nasty Plot, Focus Blast and Drain Punch, and Tri Attack is listed at 40 power in this game. There is no breeding or tutoring.

Alakazam in the anime

Debut M01Mewtwo Strikes Back · First major role EP072The Ancient Puzzle of Pokémopolis · Its appearances on screen, and 8 other trainers who raised one.

Alakazam has never travelled with Ash, but it has made a habit of standing in his way. Its first starring role on television was the colossal Alakazam of Pokémopolis, conjured from a pair of ancient artefacts to slug it out with a giant Gengar until a giant Jigglypuff sang them both to sleep. Since then the Psi Pokémon has been Kumquat Island Gym Leader Luana's tag partner, Anabel's opening act at the Battle Tower and, as a towering Mega Alakazam, the test Gurkinn set Ash's Lucario on Mega Island.

Away from Ash it has wowed Contest crowds for Kenny, quietly saved a farm for Vito Winstrate, helped Faba in his scheme to wipe Lillie's memories and chased Suicune with Eusine. Spoons, telekinesis and cool heads run through the lot, from a Clown's spoon-juggling act to Blue's Alakazam teleporting out of the way of Lorelei's Lapras in Pokémon Generations.

Anabel's Alakazam
Anabel
Frontier Brain (Battle Tower, Battle Frontier)
Alakazam

First seen: AG169Talking a Good Game!

The Salon Maiden who rules the Battle Tower leads with an Alakazam every bit as calm as she is. Before Ash had even challenged her, it turned a Team Rocket ambush on its head, redirecting Cacnea's Pin Missile with Psychic and confusing Cacnea and Seviper with Psybeam until they attacked each other (AG169). In the battle that followed it knocked out Corphish and Tauros with Psybeam and Focus Punch, and it took a Thunderbolt that overpowered its Psybeam for Pikachu to bring it down; Metagross then finished the job for Anabel. In the next day's rematch Corphish had its revenge: once Ash recalled it to shake off confusion, its Bubble Beam knocked Alakazam out, and Ash went on to win the Ability Symbol (AG170).

Gurkinn's Alakazam
Gurkinn
Mega Evolution guru and Korrina's grandfather (Pokémon Journeys)
Alakazam (Mega Alakazam)

First seen: JN084An Adventure of Mega Proportions!

Korrina's grandfather, the Mega Evolution guru from Shalour City, keeps a Mega Alakazam as his trump card. On Mega Island he played a bearded 'Mega Evolution Sage', floating along on Alakazam's power, and told Ash he would have to get past it to keep the Lucarionite that Lucario had prised loose from the metal spikes of the Steel Forest (JN084). Mega Alakazam kept the stone hovering behind it, met Aura Sphere with Psybeam, picked the real Lucario out of a Double Team with Psychic and paralysed it with Tri Attack. Lucario still found a way, vaulting over Alakazam by grabbing its beard and snatching the stone, before the Sage threw off his disguise. Korrina had been in on the secret all along.

Faba's Alakazam
Faba
Aether Foundation (Sun & Moon)
Alakazam

First seen: SM049Mission: Total Recall!

Faba's Alakazam was the muscle behind a truly nasty plan: wiping away Lillie's painful memories. With Hypno beside it, Alakazam got the better of Gladion, knocking out his Umbreon with Miracle Eye and Psychic, then sent Ash flying and held Lillie up in the air until Silvally freed her and beat Faba with a Dark Memory-powered Multi-Attack (SM049). Faba recalled his Pokémon and slunk away, but the pair stayed with him as he became an ally: Alakazam was at Kukui and Burnet's wedding (SM055), fought Gozu alongside Hypno and Kukui's Braviary, taking a Heavy Slam from his Mega Aggron (SM089), and knocked out a Boldore to see Faba through the Battle Royal at the Manalo Conference (SM129).

Luana's Alakazam
Luana
Gym Leader (Kumquat Gym, Orange Islands)
Alakazam

First seen: EP108Pokémon Double Trouble

Luana runs her Gym from a luxury hotel on Kumquat Island and fights Double Battles, with Alakazam and Marowak as her tag team. Before the Gym match Alakazam had already shown its class, throwing up Reflect to stop Arbok's Poison Sting and clamping Team Rocket's robot Rhydon's mouth shut with Psychic. With the Jade Star Badge at stake it held Ash's Charizard frozen in mid-air while Marowak's Bonemerang went to work, until Pikachu's Thunder Shock broke the hold. Its point-blank Hyper Beam turned the match: Charizard pulled up at the last second, Marowak's Bonemerang struck Alakazam instead and the misfired beam blasted Marowak. Both were out, and Ash had his fourth and final Orange League Badge (EP108).

Eusine's Alakazam
Eusine
recurring character (Johto, Pokémon Chronicles)
Alakazam

First seen: EP227For Ho-Oh the Bells Toll!

Morty's Suicune-obsessed friend challenged Ash at the Ecruteak Gym with Alakazam, only for the match to be called off when word came that the Tin Tower was covered in webs (EP227). Alakazam shielded everyone from the String Shot of Spinarak and Ariados with Reflect, but a Tangela flattened it with a single Vine Whip. Against Suicune itself, its Disable was turned aside by Mirror Coat, and Suicune's Roar sent it straight back into its Poké Ball. It returned in The Legend of Thunder!, where the dub calls its Trainer 'Eugene', distracting Attila's Skarmory and Hun's Steelix so the others could break through to the trapped Raikou.

Kenny's Alakazam
Kenny
Coordinator and Dawn's rival (Diamond and Pearl)
Alakazam

First seen: DP027Settling a Not-So-Old Score!

Kenny saved Alakazam for the closing act of the Floaroma Contest's first round, and it put on a proper conjuring trick: it boxed itself inside a Light Screen, shattered the box with Shadow Ball, Teleported clear and rose through a ring of Hidden Power for a fireworks finish (DP027). Marian likened the routine to a magic show, Dawn checked it with her Pokédex, and Kenny went through to the final eight alongside Dawn and Jessie.

Vito Winstrate
Winstrate family (Advanced Challenge)
Alakazam

First seen: AG046Candid Camerupt!

Vito, the Winstrates' eldest son, left home to become Hoenn League Champion but would much rather raise Pokémon than battle them, and his Alakazam is a quiet helper rather than a fighter. When his grandmother's Camerupt stampeded towards the family's crops, Vito secretly had Alakazam use Rain Dance, and the downpour calmed it before it got there; everyone put it down to luck. Later he had Alakazam smash Team Rocket's balloon contraption with Psychic to rescue Pikachu (AG046).

Alex Davis
Trainer from Cherrygrove City (Johto League Champions)
Alakazam

First seen: EP171Power Play!

Alex Davis threw his Alakazam at Gary's newly evolved Umbreon and emptied the whole toolbox: Zap Cannon, a Psychic that did nothing to a Dark type, Headbutt, Dynamic Punch, a Double Team ambush and a Teleport escape from Quick Attack. Gary kept Umbreon calm enough to find the real Alakazam among the copies, and once it had leapt clear of a last-ditch Hyper Beam, Hidden Power finished the job (EP171).

Ash & Alakazam

Ash has never caught an Alakazam, but he has had to out-think plenty of them. He beat Kumquat Island Gym Leader Luana's Alakazam and Marowak for his last Orange League Badge (EP108), and watched Anabel's Alakazam sweep aside Corphish and Tauros at the Battle Tower before Corphish got its revenge in the rematch that won him the Ability Symbol (AG169, AG170). Years later, his Lucario outwitted Gurkinn's Mega Alakazam to claim the Lucarionite (JN084).

Anime trivia

  • In Japan, The Evolution Solution (EP066) closed with Professor Oak's Pokémon Lecture on Alakazam, and the North American VHS of Mewtwo Strikes Back reused that lecture footage for Professor Oak's introduction.
  • The giant Alakazam of Pokémopolis uses a move that looks very like Psycho Cut, which only arrived in the games in Generation IV (EP072).
  • In Pokémon Double Trouble (EP108), the English dub has the referee declare both Marowak and Alakazam unable to battle; in the Japanese version only Marowak is called out.
  • Gary's page on the Silver Conference website shows an Alakazam among his Pokémon, but he has never been seen using one (EP269).
  • Marian compares Kenny's Light Screen and Teleport routine to a magic show, a nod to the conjuror's magic word that gives Alakazam its name (DP027).
  • Faba's Alakazam brought Miracle Eye to the anime: the move had been in the games since Generation IV, but it was not seen on screen until Mission: Total Recall! (SM049).

Alakazam in the movies

2 films featuring Alakazam.

Alakazam has never headlined a Pokémon film, but it keeps turning up whenever the plot needs some psychic muscle. Its very first appearance in the anime was in Mewtwo Strikes Back (1998), as one of the Pokémon Mewtwo flattens at the Viridian Gym, and in Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel (2016) a Mega Alakazam is forced into battle against Volcanion by Levi's Mega Wave.

A Trainer's Alakazam, beaten by Mewtwo at the Viridian Gym

Alakazam's first time on screen came in the very first film, and it isn't a happy one. While Mewtwo is doing Giovanni's dirty work at the Viridian Gym, beating every Trainer who dares to challenge it, a Trainer's Alakazam is among its victims, along with a Magneton. The 2019 CGI remake, Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution, drops that battle altogether. Sharp-eared fans of the English dub can also catch a Scyther being called 'Alakazam': 4Kids said they left the slip in on purpose for children to spot, reasoning that Team Rocket could easily get it wrong.

Levi's Alakazam (Mega Alakazam), controlled by Mega Wave

In this film Alakazam ends up on the wrong side, through no fault of its own. When Volcanion lands on the airship of Levi, an agent of the scheming Cabinet Minister Alva, Levi sends out Alakazam and Glalie and uses his jewelled 'Mega Wave' bracelet to force them both to Mega Evolve. Mega Alakazam and Mega Glalie hold Volcanion off until it is frozen solid and thrown overboard. Later, at the castle, Alva turns Mega Wave on Alakazam, Glalie and his Shiny Gengar, and Ash's Pokémon help overwhelm the three long enough for Volcanion to escape with Magearna. When Ash finally wrecks the Mega Wave machinery, the controlled Pokémon are released and Alakazam makes its getaway.

Alakazam in the Pokémon TCG

38 cards since 1999, oldest first. Tap any card to see it full size.

Alakazam has been in the TCG from day one. It debuted in Japan's very first Expansion Pack in October 1996 and was card number one of Base Set, the first English set, in January 1999. That first holo set the tone: Alakazam's cards are rarely about brute force. Instead they move damage counters around, copy attacks, punish a full hand and generally out-think the opponent. Since then it has been Team Rocket's Dark Alakazam, Sabrina's partner, a Shiny Alakazam ☆, Lucian's Alakazam 4 with its LV.X, an Alakazam-EX and Mega Alakazam-EX pair, Alakazam V, Radiant Alakazam and, in 151, an Alakazam ex whose Dimensional Hand works from the Bench. There were lean years too: with no Kadabra card legal for play, Mysterious Treasures' Alakazam had to be reached through Abra's Ultra Evolution.

The art has travelled just as far. Ken Sugimori's clean official style defined the early years, from Base Set to Sabrina's Gym Challenge card, before the e-Card sets handed Alakazam to Hajime Kusajima and Kimiya Masago. Mitsuhiro Arita has painted it three times, from Lucian's room at the Sinnoh League to a Fates Collide Secret Rare with Umbreon and Lugia. The XY era brought 5ban Graphics' computer-rendered Mega Alakazam, and the Scarlet & Violet years added Full Art, Shiny and Special Illustration Rare versions. Pokémon TCG Pocket keeps the story going, bringing Kouki Saitou's 2007 art back for a new generation of players.

Alakazam in manga, books & other media

From the earliest manga to story books and songs.

In print, Alakazam got its start as a punchline: in the first volume of Pokémon Adventures (1997), the Pokémon Fan Club Chairman faints when his cuddly Abra comes home from the S.S. Anne as a fully grown Alakazam. The same series has since handed one to Sabrina, whose Alakazam conjures the Spoons of Destiny, to Blue, whose Gym Alakazam beats Yellow's Chuchu with a borrowed Static, and, on loan from Crystal, to Emerald, who prizes it mostly for its Teleport. Mega Alakazam joined in during the X & Y arc. Elsewhere it leads Team A.C.T. in Ginji's Rescue Team, opens for Anabel in the Battle Frontier manga and swipes Ash's paper plane just for fun in the Diamond & Pearl comic. On the bookshelf, Scholastic's Talent Showdown gives Gary an Alakazam of his own.

It then battles Lorelei's Slowbro beside Sabrina's Venomoth until Lorelei's Jynx stops them both with Lovely Kiss (PS083). Alakazam trivia

Name origins, design secrets and the facts that make Alakazam such a fan favourite.

What’s in a name?

'Alakazam!' is the word a stage magician cries at the big reveal – an incantation from the same family as 'abracadabra', which makes it the perfect finale after Abra and Kadabra. In Japan it is Foodin (フーディン), a name that most likely honours Harry Houdini, the famous illusionist and escape artist. The act carries on around the world: French, Spanish, Italian and Brazilian Portuguese all keep Alakazam, German calls it Simsala after 'Simsalabim' – the magic word that typically follows 'Abrakadabra' – and Mandarin's Húdì blends a transcription of the Japanese name with Húdíní, the Chinese rendering of Houdini.

Design origins

Alakazam is a stage magician through and through – part conjuror, part spoon bender, with a dash of fox, an animal folklore has long tied to magic. Its pentagram-shaped head and fox-like humanoid build may nod to Abe no Seimei, the real-life court magician of Japanese legend whose emblem is the pentagram and who was said to be half fox. Other echoes have been spotted too: its human body, horns and magical air recall Baphomet; its spoon-bending hints at alchemy, the early science that tried to transform metals by magic; and its horns, talons and long moustache resemble those of a Chinese dragon, another wonder-working creature. Mega Alakazam goes the full sorcerer – or perhaps a Hindu sadhu with psychic powers – with a flowing white beard and a red gem on its forehead that turns its head into a likeness of the unicursal hexagram, the main symbol of Thelema, with the gem standing in for the five-petalled flower at its centre.

Did you know?

  1. In Generation VI, Mega Alakazam's base stat total was only 90 points higher than Alakazam's, not the usual 100; Generation VII added 10 more Sp. Def to make up the difference.
  2. In the Pokéathlon, Alakazam pairs a perfect Skill score with rock-bottom Power and Stamina.
  3. Alakazam and Machamp mirror each other: both are trade-evolved final stages of three-stage lines, with a 3:1 male-to-female ratio, the Human-Like Egg Group and Medium Slow growth – one a Sp. Atk specialist, the other an Attack powerhouse.
  4. Their lines sit side by side in the National Pokédex and even swap places in trades: a boy in Crystal's Goldenrod City trades his Machop for an Abra, while a girl in Oreburgh City trades her Abra for a Machop.
  5. Alakazam also mirrors Gengar: both stand 1.5 m tall, both get shorter when they Mega Evolve and both have had a base stat total of 500 since Generation VI – and giant versions of the pair clash in The Ancient Puzzle of Pokémopolis.
  6. Trade an Alakazam from Red or Blue into Gold or Silver and it arrives holding a Gold Berry.
  7. At the Pokémon World Tournament in Black 2 and White 2, Sabrina always leads with her signature Pokémon, Alakazam.
  8. Its Mega Stone keeps the magic in other languages too – it's the Alakazamite in French and the Simsalanit in German.
