Synopsis

May and Ash are queueing at a busy Kanto bakery when an Arcanine streaks past. May wants to catch it, but Drew is already in pursuit with his Flygon, whose Flamethrower Arcanine blocks with Heat Wave before vanishing with Extreme Speed. Drew reveals that he has already won his first Kanto Ribbon and is aiming for the Kanto Grand Festival, which only spurs May on. Team Rocket, working at the bakery, are ordered back to their counters. Brock tracks Arcanine to a stand of Pecha Berry trees, but it outruns Combusken, and an old woodsman tells the group where it likes to appear, information he has already given Drew. At a spring Arcanine drinks and dashes off again before anyone can get close.

Fired from the bakery for slacking off, Team Rocket follow a Wobbuffet’s lead to the same Pecha trees, as Ash’s group ambush Arcanine there with Corphish, Mudkip and May’s Squirtle. Battling alongside May’s other Pokémon, Squirtle reveals that it knows Tackle and Water Gun but is driven back into its Poké Ball by Arcanine’s mighty roar. May then sends out Munchlax, which uses Metronome, produces Extreme Speed and keeps pace with the fleeing Arcanine, but gets distracted and strips every Pecha tree bare instead of fighting. Team Rocket arrive too late to grab any berries and decide that Arcanine itself would make a far better prize for Giovanni, and they set off to find where the fire Pokémon has taken its stolen berries.

May and Drew meet on a ledge and argue over who should catch Arcanine, so they settle it with a battle, in which Flygon’s Steel Wing defeats Squirtle. Moments later the group discover the reason for Arcanine’s berry raids: it has been feeding three Growlithe. Team Rocket’s balloon nets the Growlithe and Arcanine, Flygon tears the nets apart, and Dustox, Cacnea and the trio are blasted away. Unwilling to split up a family, May and Drew both decide to let Arcanine go. Drew suggests that May enter the Pokémon Contest in Saffron City and leaves, and Max confirms that Saffron is close and on the way to the Battle Arena, so the group head there next, where May hopes to win her first Kanto Ribbon.
