Turning Over a New Bayleef is the 43rd episode of Pokémon: Johto League Champions, the fourth season of the Pokémon anime, and the 200th episode of the English dub overall (Japanese episode 202, Bulbapedia code EP200). It first aired in Japan on 31 May 2001 and in the United States on 4 May 2002. It falls within the season’s Whitestone & Bayleef stretch (EP197–EP200).
Synopsis
Ash’s newly evolved Bayleef runs away after he rebuffs her clumsy affection, and the two must rebuild their trust at a herb gardener’s home. Bayleef has not adjusted to her size: a loving Tackle flattens Ash, she bulldozes the smaller Pokémon in a game of fetch, and when she knocks him into a stream he snaps and tells her to keep away. Hurt, she wanders off, stirs up a Beedrill swarm and falls into a river.
An old woman named Haruno and her Machoke find her on the bank and nurse her with cream stew, and Bayleef, convinced that Ash no longer wants her, befriends the household’s Bellossom and Skiploom. Pikachu tracks her scent to Haruno’s garden, where Bayleef slaps Ash’s hand away with her leaf. Fruit, a brush and apologies get nowhere; Haruno counsels patience, likening friendship to tending a flower.
Team Rocket crash in with a giant robot Bayleef whose vines snatch Skiploom, Bellossom, Pikachu and Bayleef, and Machoke saves Haruno from being crushed. Ash leaps onto the machine and tumbles into the holding tank, where his determination finally moves Bayleef to smash the captives free. Her Razor Leaf severs the robot’s vines and Pikachu’s Thunderbolt sends the trio flying. Bayleef bows an apology for her earlier Tackle, then clambers onto Ash anyway: she has learned Body Slam.
