01Overview
Meet Dugtrio
Everything you need to know about the Mole Pokémon — the creature behind the number.
Dugtrio is what happens when three Diglett decide to do everything together. Three smooth brown heads, each with beady black eyes and a big round pink nose, poke up out of a mound of earth – and that is all anyone ever gets to see. Whatever lies beneath stays a mystery: even the farmers who live and work alongside it have never glimpsed the part of Dugtrio hidden underground.
Below the surface is where it truly shines. The three heads bob up and down in turn to loosen the soil, driving the trio forward, and Pokédex entries talk of it tunnelling at 60 mph and burrowing as deep as 60 miles – far enough, people say, to set off earthquakes. Its sleek, rock-hard heads can headbutt their way through any ground. That digging has a gentler side too: its tunnels leave soil loose and airy, which makes Dugtrio a welcome neighbour on farmland, and in Pikachu's Rescue Adventure wild Dugtrio even help bring a forest back to life by planting trees.
“In battle, it digs through the ground and strikes the unsuspecting foe from an unexpected direction.”
Pokédex · Pokémon Red (Japan), Green (Japan), FireRed, X & Violet · 1996
The secret of its strength is teamwork. The earliest Pokédex entries simply call it a team of Diglett triplets, while later ones say the three split from a single body, which is why they think exactly alike and burrow in perfect harmony. They normally get along splendidly, but every now and then a huge row breaks out over which head gets to eat first. In Pokémon Sleep they even nod off together, never parting.
Dugtrio has been part of the adventure since Red and Green, lurking in Diglett's Cave, the long tunnel that links Route 2 with Route 11 near Vermilion City. With a base Speed of 120 – the highest of any Ground-type – and the Arena Trap Ability, which stops grounded foes from fleeing or switching out, it is a slippery customer in battle. No wonder Giovanni, the boss of Team Rocket, keeps one in his Viridian Gym line-up.
Fans love it for its gloriously simple design, which looks like a living game of Whac-A-Mole, and for the eternal puzzle of what it looks like below ground. Since Sun and Moon it has also had a glamorous Alolan cousin, a golden-haired Ground and Steel-type that islanders revere as a deity of the land.
How big is Dugtrio?

At 0.7 m (2′04″) the visible part of Dugtrio stands about as tall as a dining table, and at 33.3 kg (73.4 lb) it weighs about as much as a big Labrador – while golden-haired Alolan Dugtrio, at 66.6 kg (146.8 lb), is as heavy as a grown man.
Evolution
Alolan Dugtrio
Alola form · since Sun & Moon (2016) · Mole Pokémon
Alola's Dugtrio has let its hair down – except that the glossy golden locks are really whiskers. Each head wears a different style: the left has a neat bob, the right a cascade of shoulder-length curls and the middle one a mane that flows all the way to the ground behind it. The strands are thin but heavy, made of steel that grows slowly throughout its life. They act as a protective helmet and as super-sensitive sensors that pick up vibrations from miles away, but all that metal weighs it down: Alolan Dugtrio is twice as heavy as the Kantonian trio and not quite as quick, though it can grind through solid bedrock. Even the triplets aren't identical – the metals in their bodies differ slightly, and it shows in their whiskers.
Alolans hold it in awe. It is regarded as a feminine deity of the land, people kneel and bow whenever they meet one, and keeping any of its fallen hairs is said to bring bad luck. Old superstition links it to Alola's volcanoes, too: when several Alolan Dugtrio pop out of their holes at once, older islanders take it as a sign of an eruption, perhaps because the trio senses the rumbling deep below. Its tangled hair is so distinctive that it has an Ability all of its own, Tangling Hair, shared only with Alolan Diglett.

Dugtrio in the video games
Base stat total 425 · 24 core-series games · 29 spin-offs · every move it learns, generation by generation.
Base stats
Dugtrio's current base stats are 35 HP, 100 Attack, 50 Defense, 50 Sp. Atk, 70 Sp. Def and 120 Speed, a total of 425. In Red, Green, Blue and Yellow it had a single Special stat of 70; when Gold and Silver split Special in two, Sp. Def kept the 70 and Sp. Atk dropped to 50. Sun and Moon then raised its Attack from 80 to 100, the only change to its stats so far. Its blistering 120 Speed has always been its calling card. Base experience was 153 up to Generation IV, 142 in Generations V and VI and 149 since, and its base friendship fell from 70 to 50 in Generation VIII. Alolan Dugtrio shares the 425 total but trades a little Speed (110) for Defense (60), and it gives 2 Attack EVs instead of 2 Speed.

Spin-offs & cameos
Super Smash Bros.
Dugtrio has never been a fighter or a Poké Ball Pokémon, but it is part of the scenery. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl it pokes its three heads out of the ground beside a large rock on the Ground terrain of the Pokémon Stadium 2 stage, sharing the spot with Cubone and some Pokémon fossils, and it can be collected as a trophy whose description calls it one of the fastest Ground-type Pokémon and notes that its Sand Tomb stops opponents escaping. It is back in the same spot in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, where it is also a one-star Support spirit that grants Electric Resist ↑. Its spirit battle is a perfect joke: three tiny Kirby in orange outfits pop up on Pokémon Stadium 2's Ground form while the stage rumbles with the occasional Earthquake. Win it on the Spirit Board, or buy it from the Vault shop for 500G.

Moves
Dugtrio began as a pure tunneller. In Red and Green it scratched, growled and dug, threw sand, slashed and finished at level 47 with Earthquake, while Fissure, Rock Slide and a 100-power Dig waited in the TM case. Gold and Silver handed it Magnitude and a Fissure finale, Crystal slipped in Tri Attack (three heads, three beams), and Ruby and Sapphire added Sand Tomb right at the level where Diglett evolves. Diamond and Pearl then gave it a proper bag of tricks: Night Slash, Sucker Punch, Earth Power, Mud Bomb and a sneaky Astonish.
Sun and Moon brought the biggest twist of all: Alolan Dugtrio, a Ground- and Steel-type with flowing golden hair, trading Scratch and Slash for Metal Claw and Iron Head and picking up Flash Cannon, Metal Sound and, later, Steel Beam. Sword and Shield trimmed away Magnitude and Mud Bomb and made Sandstorm a level-up move, while Scarlet and Violet's huge TM list finally let any Dugtrio learn Charm without hunting down a Shadow Pokémon. Through every change, Dig, Earthquake and Fissure have stayed at the heart of its toolkit.
Signature moves
What else would a Pokémon that lives underground learn? Dugtrio has dug in every generation: it knows Dig from level 1 in Red and Blue, where the move hit for a mighty 100, and it has stayed on its level-up list in every game since, anywhere from level 17 (Gold, Silver, Ruby and Sapphire) to level 40 (Black, White, X and Y).
The ground-shaker that rounded off its very first move list at level 47 in Red and Blue. It has been a level-up move in every game since, from level 35 in Let's Go to 51 in Ruby and Sapphire, and a TM from the very start.
A one-hit knockout that opens the earth beneath the target. A TM in Red and Blue, it has been the last move on Dugtrio's level-up list in every game since Gold and Silver, from level 45 in Let's Go to 64 in Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald.
A rumble of random strength, from a gentle tremor to a full-blown quake. Dugtrio knew it from level 1 in Gold and Silver and kept it all the way to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, before Sword and Shield retired the move.
Three heads, three beams. Crystal gave Dugtrio Tri Attack as a starting move, every main game since has kept it there, and in Let's Go it is the move Dugtrio learns the moment it evolves.
A swirling trap of sand. From Ruby and Sapphire to X and Y it sat at level 26, the very level at which Diglett evolves, and since Sun and Moon (Let's Go aside) Dugtrio has learned it the moment it evolves.
Steel for the golden-haired form. Alolan Dugtrio starts with Metal Claw in Sun and Moon, Sword and Shield, and Scarlet and Violet, and learns Iron Head where Kantonian Dugtrio learns Slash: level 41 in Alola, level 24 in Galar and Paldea.

Generation I · Red, Green, Blue & Yellow8 level-up · 16 TM/HM
In Red, Blue and Yellow alike, Dugtrio lives in Diglett's Cave, and Yellow also offers one in an in-game trade on Route 11 in exchange for a Lickitung. It starts out with Scratch, Growl and Dig, and because Diglett evolves at level 26, the moves it actually picks up after evolving are Slash at 35 and a thundering Earthquake at 47. In the first three generations a move's category follows its type, so every attack here is physical, and Dig is a hefty 100-power move in these games. Its 16 TMs and HMs are built for digging and shaking: Earthquake, Fissure, Dig and Rock Slide, plus Body Slam and Hyper Beam, with HM01 Cut available in Yellow only. Screech and Tri Attack can be brought back from Gold, Silver and Crystal through the Time Capsule.

Generation II · Gold, Silver & Crystal11 level-up · 22 TM/HM · 5 egg
Diglett's Cave is still the place to find Dugtrio in Gold, Silver and Crystal, once you reach Kanto. The level-up list is rebuilt around the new Magnitude, which Dugtrio knows from the start alongside Scratch and Growl and meets again at level 9, followed by Dig at 17, Sand-Attack (now a Ground-type move) at 25, Slash at 37 and Earthquake at 49, with Fissure as the new level-61 finale. Crystal adds Tri Attack as a starting move. Dig drops to 60 power, and the TM case grows to 22 with Curse, Rock Smash, Mud-Slap, Sludge Bomb and Thief. Breeding brings five egg moves: Beat Up from Sneasel, Faint Attack, Pursuit, Screech and AncientPower, which has to be chain-bred through Wooper or Quagsire. Categories still follow type, so the Dark-type Faint Attack, Pursuit, Beat Up and Thief are special. There are no tutor moves, and eight Red and Blue TM moves, Rock Slide, Body Slam and Double-Edge among them, can only be carried over from Generation I.

Generation III · Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed & LeafGreen (plus Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness)13 level-up · 20 TM/HM · 7 egg · 10 tutor · 2 event
Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald and Colosseum have no Dugtrio of their own, so FireRed and LeafGreen's Diglett's Cave is its home in this generation. Tri Attack becomes a standard starting move, Sand Tomb arrives at level 26, the very level at which Diglett evolves, and the list now runs from Magnitude at 9 and Dig at 17 to Earthquake at 51 and Fissure at 64, with Fury Swipes slotted in at 21 in FireRed and LeafGreen only. Its 20 TMs and HMs add Rock Tomb, Aerial Ace and Secret Power, but not Sandstorm. Kecleon now passes on AncientPower, Camerupt passes on Rock Slide and Uproar joins the egg moves, while Emerald's tutors teach all ten of its tutor moves, FireRed and LeafGreen five and Pokémon XD five. In Pokémon XD, a Shadow Dugtrio waits on Citadark Isle, and once purified it is the only way to get Charm or Sandstorm on a Dugtrio in this generation.

Generation IV · Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold & SoulSilver17 level-up · 32 TM/HM · 10 egg · 4 tutor
Diamond, Pearl and Platinum have wild Dugtrio on Route 228, HeartGold and SoulSilver bring back Diglett's Cave, and older Dugtrio can come over through Pal Park's Mountain area. The level-up list balloons to 17 entries: Night Slash and Tri Attack sit among its starting moves, Astonish arrives at 7, and Sucker Punch (23), Earth Power (28) and Mud Bomb (33) join the lineup before Slash, Earthquake at 45 and Fissure at 50. Every move now has its own physical or special category, so Mud-Slap, Earth Power and Mud Bomb become special, and Dig climbs to 80 power. The 32 TMs and HMs finally include Sandstorm, along with Stealth Rock, Stone Edge, Shadow Claw and Giga Impact. Astonish and Mud Bomb join the egg moves, with Reversal in HeartGold and SoulSilver only, and the tutors of Platinum, HeartGold and SoulSilver teach Earth Power, Mud-Slap, Snore and Sucker Punch. Five moves can only be brought along from Generation III, among them Charm, from the Shadow Dugtrio of Pokémon XD, and Fury Swipes, from FireRed and LeafGreen.

Generation V · Black, White, Black 2 & White 218 level-up · 31 TM/HM · 13 egg · 5 tutor
Unova has no wild Dugtrio: in Black, White, Black 2 and White 2 it has to be brought in from an older game with Poké Transfer. Its level-up list keeps the Diamond and Pearl moves but reshuffles the back half, with the new Bulldoze at 18, Mud Bomb at 28, Earth Power at 33, Dig at 40, Slash at 45, Earthquake at 50 and Fissure at 57. Sand Tomb now hits for 35 power with 85% accuracy. Hone Claws, Sludge Wave, Round, Echoed Voice and Bulldoze join the 31 TMs and HMs, and Endure, Final Gambit, Headbutt and Memento make 13 egg moves. Black and White have no tutor moves for Dugtrio, but a Diglett from the Dream World could arrive knowing Stealth Rock and keep it after evolving; Black 2 and White 2's tutors teach Earth Power, Sleep Talk, Snore, Stealth Rock and Uproar.

Generation VI · X, Y, Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire19 level-up · 35 TM/HM · 13 egg · 3 tutor
X and Y have wild Dugtrio on Route 13 and in Ground-type Friend Safaris, while Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire players have to evolve a Diglett. A fitting new starting move arrives for a Pokémon that spends its life underground: Rototiller, which tills the soil to give Grass-type Pokémon a boost; otherwise the Black and White list is unchanged, with Sand-Attack now spelled Sand Attack. Rock Tomb and Thief get stronger, Confide arrives as TM100, and TM94 is Rock Smash in X and Y but Secret Power in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, where Rock Smash becomes HM06. The 13 egg moves stay the same, and Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire's tutors teach Earth Power, Snore and Stealth Rock. Charm has turned Fairy-type, but Dugtrio can still only get it from the Pokémon XD Shadow Dugtrio of long ago.

Generation VII · Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon20 level-up · 29 TM/HM · 13 egg · 4 tutor · + Alolan Dugtrio
Alola has a Dugtrio of its own. The original Ground-type Dugtrio can only reach Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon through Pokémon Bank, while the golden-haired Ground/Steel Alolan Dugtrio lives in the Haina Desert, at Poni Coast, in Resolution Cave and in Vast Poni Canyon, with Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon adding the caves of Lush Jungle. Both forms now learn Sand Tomb the moment they evolve, Sucker Punch drops to 70 power, and the list is tightened, from Mud-Slap at 10 to Earthquake at 47 and Fissure at 53. Dig is no longer a TM (it stays on the level-up list at 35), leaving 29 TMs, while the 13 egg moves carry on unchanged. Sun and Moon have no tutor moves; Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon's tutors add the new Stomping Tantrum to Earth Power, Snore and Stealth Rock. Fifteen older moves, such as Cut, Rock Smash, Hone Claws and Secret Power, can only come from earlier games.

Alolan DugtrioGroundSteel
Alolan Dugtrio shares the Kantonian list with two metallic swaps: Metal Claw replaces Scratch as a starting move, and Iron Head takes Slash's place at level 41, both with the same-type bonus that its Steel typing brings. Its 31 TMs add Work Up and Flash Cannon. Its egg moves lose Astonish, Mud Bomb, Screech and Uproar but gain Metal Sound from Lucario and a rampaging Thrash, and Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon's tutors teach it Iron Defense and Iron Head as well as the Kantonian four. As a brand-new form, it has no moves to bring along from older games.

Generation VIII · Sword & Shield (incl. Expansion Pass), Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl17 level-up · 65 TM/HM · 15 egg · 1 tutor · + Alolan Dugtrio
Sword and Shield have wild Dugtrio on Route 6 and in the Wild Area at Giant's Mirror, Giant's Cap, Dusty Bowl, the Lake of Outrage and Hammerlocke Hills, plus Max Raid Battles in Bridge Field and Rolling Fields. Alolan Dugtrio can be traded in, and both forms turn up in the Crown Tundra's Dynamax Adventures. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl keep Dugtrio on Route 228 (Alolan Dugtrio cannot be obtained there), and neither form appears in Legends: Arceus. One level-up list serves Sword, Shield, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl alike: Magnitude, Mud Bomb and Rototiller are gone, Astonish moves to level 1, and Sandstorm becomes a level-30 move between Slash at 24 and Dig at 36, with Earthquake at 48 and Fissure at 54. Sword and Shield's 21 TMs and 17 TRs bring Screech, Beat Up, Assurance, Agility, High Horsepower and even Ally Switch, while Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl go back to a Sinnoh-style list of 27 TMs with Cut and Rock Smash. Sword and Shield cut the egg moves to five, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl keep ten, and the Expansion Pass tutor teaches Scorching Sands. Several older moves, among them Magnitude, Mud Bomb, Pursuit and Feint Attack, can be brought along but not used in Sword and Shield.

Dugtrio in the anime
Debut EP031Dig Those Diglett! · Its appearances on screen, and 5 other trainers who raised one.
Dugtrio tunnelled into the anime in Dig Those Diglett! (EP031), where a whole colony of Mole Pokémon worked hand in hand with Diglett to replant a mountainside – and swept Team Rocket away on a wave of earth for good measure. Ever since, the triplets have popped up wherever the ground needs moving: herding Electrode out of town for a Diglett rancher on Hamlin Island, carrying a lost Cyndaquil across the desert towards a hidden oasis, and chasing Team Rocket round a cave after Jessie made the mistake of kicking a rock at them.
Ash has never caught one, but plenty of Trainers have. Katie's Dugtrio floored Pikachu at the Ever Grande Conference, DJ Leo's golden-haired Alolan Dugtrio is the voice – or rather three voices – of his band, Goh caught the ringleader of a crop-raiding Diglett gang only to hand it over to the farmer, and Rika of the Paldea Elite Four sends hers out beside Clodsire in Pokémon Horizons.

First seen: JN052How Are You Gonna Keep 'Em Off of the Farm?
Goh's luck with Dugtrio took a while to turn. One burst out of the ground and carried him off during his catching spree, then ducked underground before he could throw a ball (JN006), and an Alolan Dugtrio later distracted him so badly that he and Raboot ran straight off a cliff (JN037). He finally caught one at Laxton Farm, where a Dugtrio was masterminding a gang of Diglett that had been driven from their home by Team Rocket's racket and were raiding Laxton's carrot field. With Chloe signalling from the balcony and Ash lending a hand, Goh caught a Diglett and then the ringleader itself, and its only battle sent Team Rocket flying with Sand Tomb. Realising how much the Diglett needed their leader, Goh handed Dugtrio's Poké Ball to Laxton so the whole crew could keep tilling his fields (JN052).

First seen: HZ055Showdown! The Paldea Elite Four
Rika of the Paldea Elite Four sends out Dugtrio as the partner of her star Pokémon, Clodsire. In the Elite Four Tag Battle at Naranja Academy the pair beat student Sidian and Gym Leader Tulip, bringing down Sidian's Garganacl (HZ055). Liko and Katy were next: Dugtrio dived underground with Dig to let Clodsire's Sludge Wave sweep over it, then burst up to strike Floragato, spun round to fling her off when she wrapped it in vines, and pelted her with Rock Slide. It was left paralysed after taking a Bounce from Katy's Lokix to shield Clodsire, but Rika still won once a Terastallized Clodsire knocked out Floragato (HZ056).

First seen: AG128Shocks and Bonds
Katie, a cool-headed Trainer from Lilycove City who likes to switch Pokémon mid-battle, faced Ash in the first match of the Ever Grande Conference's Victory Tournament – a six-on-six Full Battle on a rocky field. Her Dugtrio came in against Pikachu and made the type matchup count, digging, trapping and finally knocking Pikachu out with a Double-Edge that even Iron Tail couldn't stop. Glalie turned the tables, forcing Dugtrio out of the ground with Headbutt and finishing it with Ice Beam (AG128). Ash went on to win the match in A Judgment Brawl (AG129).

First seen: SM023Getting the Band Back Together!
DJ Leo was so taken with a wild Alolan Dugtrio's singing voice that he formed the duo Dug-Leo with it, naming its three heads Jessica, Ashley and Michael. The heads' squabbles over who should sing lead were already upsetting rehearsals, and an Alolan Diglett fan singing at Leo's home irritated Dugtrio even more – so when Team Rocket turned up posing as talent agents, they talked it into going solo, then tied it up in a mountain hut. Freed by Diglett, it snared Mimikyu and Mareanie in its Tangling Hair and sent Team Rocket flying with Tri Attack, and the band reformed as Dig-Dug-Leo with Diglett as Dugtrio's apprentice (SM023). Dugtrio was with Leo when he provided the music at Professor Kukui and Professor Burnet's wedding (SM055), and the pair entered the Manalo Conference's opening Battle Royal, though they didn't make the Top 16 (SM129).

First seen: EP114The Underground Round Up
Poncho, a Diglett rancher hired by the mayor of Hamlin Island, set his Diglett digging a tunnel to move a colony of furious Electrode out of town – only to be fired for being too slow, as the mayor had hired Team Rocket instead. When Team Rocket's Electrode Eliminator mecha closed in on Pikachu, Togepi and a Voltorb, Poncho called on his Dugtrio, which opened up a huge hole beneath the machine and dropped the trio deep underground. With the Diglett working as a living conveyor belt, Dugtrio then led the Electrode out to the grassy prairie behind the city, where they could bounce about in peace (EP114).

Ash & Dugtrio
Ash has never caught a Dugtrio, but the Mole Pokémon has turned up at some big moments in his journey. At the Ever Grande Conference, Katie's Dugtrio used its Ground typing to knock out Pikachu before Glalie beat it with Ice Beam (AG128). In Alola he helped DJ Leo win back his runaway Alolan Dugtrio (SM023), and in Pokémon Journeys he and Pikachu helped Goh catch the ringleader of a crop-raiding Diglett gang (JN052).

Anime trivia
- Dugtrio's first Pokédex scan was a bit of a damp squib: in Dig Those Diglett! Ash's Pokédex could only say that it was the evolved form of Diglett, with "no specific information available" (EP031).
- DJ Leo named his Alolan Dugtrio's three heads Jessica, Ashley and Michael. In the English dub Jessica is voiced by Erica Schroeder and the other two by Marc Thompson (SM023).
- The Japanese title of Getting the Band Back Together! translates as "Shocking! Dugtrio Split Up!?" (SM023).
- Fans of DJ Leo's group turn up to concerts in blonde wigs modelled on Alolan Dugtrio's golden hair.
- Goh caught his Dugtrio and gave it away in the same episode, handing it to the farmer Laxton so it could stay with its Diglett (JN052).
- In the original Japanese version of JN052, Goh's Rotom Phone shows a picture of Diglett while he talks about Dugtrio – the English dub fixed the slip.

Dugtrio in the movies
1 Pikachu short featuring Dugtrio.
Dugtrio has never had a proper part in a Pokémon feature film, so its finest moment on the big screen comes in a Pikachu short. In Meloetta's Moonlight Serenade (2012), a conveyor belt of Diglett passes Meowth and Wobbuffet up to a Dugtrio, which launches them into the sky. Three heads, one perfectly timed send-off.

Dugtrio gets the punchline in this Pikachu short. When Team Rocket's Meowth and Wobbuffet tumble into yet another hole, a line of Diglett carries them out through a tunnel and hoists them up onto a waiting Dugtrio, which sends the pair blasting off all over again.

Dugtrio in the Pokémon TCG
45 cards since 1999, oldest first. Tap any card to see it full size.
Dugtrio has been tunnelling through the Pokémon TCG since day one. It was in Japan's very first Expansion Pack in October 1996 and reached English players in Base Set in January 1999 as a Rare Stage 1 whose Earthquake rattled its own Bench. Since then it has popped up in almost every era, but never as a Pokémon ex, EX, GX or V in the paper game. Its speciality is traps instead. Dark Dugtrio's Sinkhole (Team Rocket, 2000) turned every retreat into a gamble, Platinum brought Sinkhole back in 2009, and Team Rocket's Dugtrio carried the idea into 2026 with its Holes Ability. Alongside them there are Brock's Dugtrio, e-Reader cards from the e-Card era, a Japanese guidebook promo and even a vending-machine rules card with Dugtrio in its name. Alolan Dugtrio struck Metal in Sun & Moon in 2017 and has had five cards in all, from Ultra Prism's Energy-guzzling Gold Rush (later a McDonald's card) to a Surging Sparks Illustration Rare. Its first ex is digital: Alolan Dugtrio ex in Pokémon TCG Pocket.
The art has come a long way too. In the early years Keiji Kinebuchi's original sat alongside Kagemaru Himeno's Dark Dugtrio and Ken Sugimori's clean, official-style Brock's Dugtrio. The e-Card and EX years brought new hands such as Masako Yamashita, Hajime Kusajima and Tomokazu Komiya, who drew it twice. Modern artists like to slip in little extras: Megumi Mizutani tucked Oreburgh Mine into the background of Alolan Dugtrio's card, and Kyoko Umemoto's Sword & Shield card nods to the Diglett she drew in 2006. Then came the Illustration Rares, with Yukihiro Tada's Alolan Dugtrio in 2024 and Whisker's Team Rocket scene starring Giovanni in 2026. TCG Pocket keeps the story going by digging up old art from Skyridge, Lost Thunder, Unbroken Bonds and Sword & Shield, and it has added Shiny versions of both forms.
Cards to know
- Base Set 19/102 — Where it all began: Keiji Kinebuchi's trio, whose 70-damage Earthquake shakes your own Bench too. Evolutions brought the same art back for the 20th anniversary.
- Team Rocket 6/82 (Dark Dugtrio) — Sinkhole made every retreat a coin-flip gamble. A Team Rocket strategy guide built a whole deck around it, 'Dugtrio's Pit of Doom', with the aim of getting two or three of them onto your Bench.
- Asobikata promo (Japan) — A Dugtrio that came with a 1998 how-to-play guidebook. While it hides on your Bench, no attack can touch it.
- Expedition Base Set 10/165 — An e-Reader-era holo with a printing quirk: the Energy symbols in its attack costs came out oversized.
- Ultra Prism 79/156 (Alolan Dugtrio) — Gold Rush costs nothing and cashes in the Metal Energy in your hand at 30 damage apiece, with Oreburgh Mine in the background.
- Ascended Heroes 239/217 (Team Rocket's Dugtrio) — Whisker's Illustration Rare puts the trio beside Giovanni and two Grunts, a salute to the boss's favourite burrower.

Dugtrio in manga, books & other media
From the earliest manga to story books and songs.
Dugtrio's best stories are on paper. In Pokémon Adventures, Giovanni's Dugtrio jams Red's Poké Balls in the chasm under Viridian Gym, the Underground Man's three Dugtrio tunnel beneath Sinnoh, and Molayne's Alolan Dugtrio defends Hokulani Observatory against Ultra Beasts. Elsewhere it plays the prankster in Magical Pokémon Journey, beats Chris's Cyndaquil in The Golden Boys and lies in wait underground in Yeah! I Got Pokémon!. Off the comics page it poses for Todd's camera (and as a mountain) in the Pokémon Snap storybook, becomes a stones-and-plant-pot craft in the Pokémon Annual 2024, and gets sung about from the Pokérap to Japan's drawing song Pokémon Kakeru Kana?.

Dugtrio trivia
Name origins, design secrets and the facts that make Dugtrio such a fan favourite.
What’s in a name?
Dugtrio's name is a neat little sum: 'dug', for what it has done to the ground beneath your feet, plus 'trio', for its three heads. The Japanese name ダグトリオ (Dagutorio) is built from exactly the same English words, so the name barely changed on its way west. Other languages have had fun with it: the French Triopikeur mixes trio with taupe (mole) and marteau-piqueur (jackhammer), the German Digdri blends 'dig' with drei (three), and the Chinese 三地鼠 means 'three moles'. Most other countries, from Spain and Italy to Brazil, simply kept Dugtrio.
Design origins
Dugtrio looks like it escaped from a fairground: three heads popping out of holes is pure Whac-A-Mole, and the trio also recalls a family of moles peeping out of the soil. There may be a dash of naked mole-rat in there too, as those burrowers defend their tunnels by lining up and showing only their heads to intruders such as snakes. Alolan Dugtrio takes its cues from Hawaii's volcanoes. Its golden strands echo Pele's hair, the fine threads of volcanic glass that form near eruptions; the bad luck that comes from taking its hair nods to the modern 'Pele's Curse' said to fall on anyone who takes lava rock home; and its status as a feminine deity points to the volcano goddess Pele herself. The dark earth around it suggests the black-sand beaches near volcanoes, while its Steel type may come from magnetic black sand found in placer deposits. With its tan and long blonde hair, it also looks every inch a stereotypical Southern California surfer.

Did you know?
- Diglett and Dugtrio share their Mole Pokémon category with Drilbur.
- Dugtrio has the highest base Speed of any Ground-type Pokémon – yet among the fastest Pokémon of each type, it is the slowest.
- It is the only Ground-type Pokémon made up of multiple bodies.
- Kantonian Dugtrio and Paldea's Wugtrio have identical base stats, spread in exactly the same way, and their pre-evolutions start evolving at the same level.
- Wugtrio was once thought to be a regional variant of Dugtrio but is a separate species, which makes Diglett and Dugtrio the only Pokémon with both regional forms and look-alike counterparts.
- Tangling Hair belongs only to Alolan Diglett and Alolan Dugtrio; Wiglett and Wugtrio get Gooey, its slimy cousin, and both lines share Sand Veil too.
- The Pokédex can't quite agree on what Dugtrio is: early entries call it a team of three Diglett, while later ones say the triplets split from a single body.
- Its official weight of 33.3 kg is far more than three Diglett would weigh – and Alolan Dugtrio is exactly double, at 66.6 kg.
- Because they are stuck in the ground, Diglett and Dugtrio can't jump in the Pokéathlon: they dig under the hurdles in Hurdle Dash and can't move at all in Lamp Jump.
- Since Black and White, Diglett and Dugtrio fade onto the battlefield rather than dropping in, and when brought over with Poké Transfer they run between the bushes instead of leaping.
- Telekinesis can't lift it, and when a Z-Move such as Supersonic Skystrike sends it into the air, it takes a chunk of ground along with it.
- Sun and Moon gave Kantonian Dugtrio a big Attack boost, from 80 to 100.
- In Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Diglett and Dugtrio are the only Pokémon seen roaming the Grand Underground's tunnels – yet neither can be caught or met in its Pokémon Hideaways.
- In Pokémon Yellow, someone on Route 11 will swap a Dugtrio nicknamed GURIO for your Lickitung.
- DJ Leo's Alolan Dugtrio in the Sun & Moon anime has a name for each head: Jessica, Ashley and Michael.
- In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, Dugtrio is Diglett's dad – and in Explorers of Time and Darkness he is sure he can swim in the sea, despite being a Ground-type.
