Synopsis
A forest fire is raging when Celebi appears and seals the flames away, but the effort leaves the Mythical Pokémon so drained that it barely escapes a falling tree by wrapping itself in a protective mass of vines. The next day Ash and his friends find the Cycling Road closed and are sent on a detour by Officer Jenny. Pikachu suddenly races off into the undergrowth, and when Ash gives chase he is stopped by Pokémon Ranger Solana and her Plusle. Solana reports in to the Ranger Union through her Capture Styler, the group introduce themselves, and Brock makes his usual romantic advances. The search for Pikachu is soon blocked by strange vines sprouting across the road, and Solana senses that Celebi must be nearby. She captures three wild Linoone with her Styler and, boosted by Plusle’s Helping Hand, they slash a path through, while Brock explains to May how a Ranger’s capture works.
Deep inside the vines, Pikachu reaches a platform where Celebi lies exhausted. It wakes long enough to see Pikachu before drifting back to sleep, and Pikachu tries to feed it and cheer it up. On the way, the group find Team Rocket hopelessly tangled in the vines; Solana’s Linoone cut them free, and the trio run off promising to leave. Solana then captures Diglett and Dugtrio, whose Dig opens a tunnel that leads the group to Pikachu, who is pulling funny faces for the recovering Celebi. Pikachu is wary of Solana at first but quickly realises she is a friend, and Ash is overjoyed to be reunited with his partner. That night, around a campfire, Solana scans and examines Celebi.
At sunrise Celebi flies overhead and a mysterious light dissolves the vines, but Team Rocket, who have not left after all, snatch it with a mecha’s metal arm. Solana races through the trees and leaps onto the machine, Plusle paralyses the trio with Thunder Wave, and Celebi is freed as the mecha crashes and sparks threaten another blaze. Jessie and James then challenge the heroes with Seviper and Cacnea. Brock’s Marshtomp dodges Poison Tail and hits back with Mud Shot, Pikachu avoids Pin Missile and strikes with Thunderbolt and Iron Tail, and Pikachu’s Volt Tackle, finally mastered, sends Team Rocket blasting off. When the wrecked mecha explodes, Celebi seals the flames in vines and heals the forest with Heal Bell. It says goodbye to Ash before vanishing in a flash of light, and with the vines gone the group ride the Cycling Road toward Fuchsia City and the Battle Pike.
