Synopsis

A girl named Pietra and her Marill catch a swimming Rhydon so that it can finish digging a tunnel for her grandmother. At dawn the gang watch a Rhydon that has learned Surf rise from a lake. Pietra needs it because her Ground types (and Brock’s Onix) bolt whenever water drips into the tunnel she is boring to the next town. Rhydon’s trail of apple cores leads to an orchard, where it finds Team Rocket scoffing its fruit and promptly rams them into the sky.

Rhydon dives, and Totodile, Marill and Misty’s Water types pursue, but a horn-spun whirlpool knocks every one of them out. On an apple-rich island Pietra lies in ambush; Pikachu’s Thunderbolt gets its attention, then Team Rocket net it from their balloon. Crobat’s Wing Attack downs the balloon, Bulbasaur’s Razor Leaf frees Rhydon and Pikachu sends the trio off again.

Pietra clings to Rhydon’s neck through its dives until it accepts her challenge. Marill dodges a tail swipe, trades Water Gun against Horn Drill, bounces off Rhydon’s hide with Tackle, then lands Bubble Beam and Water Gun; a first Poké Ball fails, but after an Iron Tail to the face the second holds. Back at the tunnel the new Rhydon ignores the drips and breaks through with Horn Drill and Take Down.
