Synopsis
A young Dewpider leaves its home lake in search of a territory of its own, falls head over heels for Lana’s bubble-shaped diving helmet, and finally wins a city pond by standing up to a Surskit. In a clear forest lake, an Araquanid tells its many grown Dewpider to leave for new waters, and one straggler lags behind before forming a water bubble around its head so it can breathe on land. Its journey is rough from the start: a Pikipek bursts its bubble, a burrowing Alolan Dugtrio throws it into a tree, where it startles a Salandit and counters with String Shot, and it bounces off an Alolan Exeggutor into an occupied lake, where a rival Dewpider drives it out after a bubble-blowing contest. It struggles on past uneven ground, a Grubbin, an Alolan Rattata and a sleeping Pangoro before bedding down inside a fallen log.
A group of glowing Morelull wakes Dewpider and leads it to the ocean, where it enjoys swimming until a Sharpedo appears and it escapes by leaping onto the shore. At sunrise it finds Lana and Popplio playing on the beach and is instantly smitten with Lana’s bubble helmet, so excited that its own bubble bursts. Lana dives in to save the suffocating Dewpider, which fires Bubble Beam at Popplio, and when Lana surfaces, the Pokémon clings to her trousers, so she and Ash take it to school. There it is irritated by the other Pokémon, and when Lana takes off her helmet, it no longer recognises her and runs off, attacking Pikachu and Snowy. Finding the school lake unsuitable, it sets out again, and Professor Kukui turns the lesson into an observation class following Dewpider.
Dodging cars and a Spearow, Dewpider makes its way through Hau’oli City to a two-tiered pond covered in lily pads and lays a Spider Web to claim it, which angers a local Surskit. Surskit skates across the surface and headbutts Dewpider out of the water, and Kukui explains that the two species often fight over territory; Sophocles compares their rivalry to Zangoose and Seviper. Dewpider’s Bubble Beam cannot match Surskit’s Signal Beam, but encouraged by Lana, it raises its bubble helmet to reflect the next Signal Beam back at its opponent, then leaps and wraps Surskit in white threads. Surskit breaks free and evolves into Masquerain in the heat of battle, and pleased with its new wings, it flies away and leaves the pond to Dewpider. The group watches the newcomer begin building a web network beneath the water of its new home.
