Ultra Prism booster box

For a lot of players, Ultra Prism is where the Sun & Moon era got its heart. Released in February 2018 as the fifth expansion, it wrapped a genuinely new mechanic and a couple of format-defining cards in a big, warm hug of Sinnoh nostalgia — Dialga and Palkia on the box, and the returns of Champion Cynthia and Team Galactic’s Cyrus.

The headline is the debut of Prism Star (◆) cards. These are powerful one-offs with a catch: you can only run one of each per deck, and when a Prism Star would be discarded it goes to the Lost Zone instead — gone for good. That made them high-impact “silver bullets” you had to spend wisely, a neat bit of design that became a signature of the era.

Then there’s Cynthia. On paper she’s a plain draw Supporter; in practice she quietly became the most important consistency card in the game (more below). And on the collector side, her full-art print — that dynamic battle pose by nagimiso — is regularly named one of the finest Trainer cards ever made.

Competitively it reshaped 2018: it handed every deck the Cynthia engine and simultaneously spun up a brand-new Metal archetype. Nostalgic and impactful — a hard combination to pull off, and Ultra Prism managed it.

An Unknown New Dimension!

Pass through the Ultra Wormhole into a bizarre new Pokémon world, where familiar sights become strange and new powers are unlocked! Watch Necrozma’s power grow, and marvel as brand-new Prism Star cards reveal their astounding effects on play. Meet Dialga-GX and Palkia-GX, and encounter bizarre Ultra Beasts and wild new forms of Alola’s Legendary Pokémon.

Set Highlights: Prism Stars and the Sinnoh Return

A brand-new rarity: the Prism Star. Ultra Prism’s biggest first was the diamond-marked Prism Star (◆) card — a new “only one per deck” special that headed to the discard pile instead of giving up a Prize when knocked out. Six debuted here, spanning Pokémon, Trainer and Energy: Giratina ◆ (58/156), Lunala ◆ (62/156), Darkrai ◆ (77/156), Solgaleo ◆ (89/156), the Cyrus ◆ Supporter (120/156) and Super Boost Energy ◆ (136/156). The mechanic would go on to run through the rest of the Sun & Moon era.

The six Prism Star (◆) cards in Ultra Prism — Giratina, Lunala, Darkrai, Solgaleo, the Cyrus Supporter and Super Boost Energy.

Sinnoh comes home. The set is a love letter to Diamond & Pearl. Dialga-GX (100/156) and Palkia-GX (101/156) headline, Team Galactic’s Cyrus and Champion Cynthia both feature, and the two theme decks lean Sinnoh too — Imperial Command (Empoleon) and Mach Strike (Garchomp).

The most important card is a Supporter. Ultra Prism’s real MVP wasn’t a GX at all. Cynthia (119/156) let you shuffle your hand into your deck and draw six fresh cards — clean, consistent draw with no downside — and she became one of the most-played, longest-lived Supporters of the whole era, a near-automatic four-of in decks for years. Her Full Art (148/156) was the must-have Trainer chase to match. On the attacking side, Dusk Mane Necrozma-GX (90/156) and Dialga-GX anchored the fast Metal decks that defined 2018 Standard.

Cynthia 119/156Cynthia Full Art 148/156

Both prints of Cynthia in Ultra Prism: the regular Supporter (119/156) and the Full Art (148/156).

Cynthia’s long reign. Ultra Prism was only the beginning for her. Cynthia kept returning across the TCG — a Shiny Vault reprint in Hidden Fates, the Cynthia & Caitlin Tag Team Supporter in Cosmic Eclipse, Cynthia’s Ambition in Brilliant Stars, Friends in Sinnoh in Crown Zenith, and eventually a whole “Cynthia’s” line-up in 2025’s Destined Rivals headlined by Cynthia’s Garchomp ex. Few Trainers have enjoyed a longer or more beloved run of cards.

For the collectors. Beyond Cynthia, the Eeveelution pair Leafeon-GX (13/156) and Glaceon-GX (39/156) were popular pulls, and the Dawn Wings (63/156) and Dusk Mane (90/156) Necrozma-GX each headlined their own Prism tin in the same window. At 173 cards counting its secret rares, Ultra Prism packed a genuinely deep and nostalgic list.

Leafeon-GX 13/156Glaceon-GX 39/156Dawn Wings Necrozma-GX 63/156Dusk Mane Necrozma-GX 90/156

Collector favourites: Leafeon-GX (13/156), Glaceon-GX (39/156), and the in-set Dawn Wings (63/156) and Dusk Mane (90/156) Necrozma-GX.

Boosters held the usual ten cards, and the English set shipped with four wrapper artworks — Dusk Mane Necrozma, Dawn Wings Necrozma, Leafeon and Giratina. A 36-pack booster box sat at the top, alongside an Elite Trainer Box and two theme decks: Imperial Command (a Water build around Empoleon) and Mach Strike (a Fighting deck fronted by Garchomp — very on-theme for a Sinnoh set).

As a mainstream 2018 release it was printed in big numbers and remains easy to find sealed or as singles, and — as with every modern set — there’s no “1st Edition.”

Variations between the Japanese and English language releases

The English Ultra Prism merges Japan’s two December 2017 “dual” sets, Ultra Sun (SM5S) and Ultra Moon (SM5M), which released on 8 December 2017 — again ahead of the 2 February 2018 Western launch.

The combined English set runs to 156 cards (173 with secret rares), against roughly 154 across the two Japanese sets — one of the closer count matches of the era, though the numbering still differs between regions.

Set List

The 173-card checklist runs 1–156 for the main set (Full Art GX and Supporters, plus the Prism Star cards, sit within that range), then 157–173 for the secret rares — the Rainbow Rare GX and gold Trainer/Energy cards. Trainer and Energy cards carry no Energy type.

Other Cards

Several Ultra Prism-era cards live outside the numbered set:

Promos. The headline out-of-set cards are the tin-exclusive Necrozma forms — Dawn Wings Necrozma-GX (SM101) and Dusk Mane Necrozma-GX (SM102), given fresh artwork in the Necrozma Prism tins (March 2018). The prerelease run added Wash Rotom (SM94), Lucario (SM95), Heatran (SM96) and Gumshoos (SM97).

Theme-deck cards. The two theme decks, Imperial Command (Water) and Mach Strike (Fighting), each carried a deck-exclusive print — a Cracked-Ice-Holo Empoleon in Imperial Command and a non-holo Lucario in Mach Strike.

Japanese-only cards. Ultra Prism is essentially the sum of Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, so the two regions’ contents line up closely — but the card numbers still don’t match between them.

Cynthia — Full Art (148/156)

Cynthia — Full Art (148/156)

The card of the set for collectors. Nagimiso’s dynamic full-art Cynthia is routinely called one of the best Trainer cards ever printed, and it cemented Cynthia as arguably the most beloved recurring human character in the TCG. If you remember one card from Ultra Prism, it’s probably this.

Leafeon-GX & Glaceon-GX

Leafeon-GX & Glaceon-GX

The Eeveelution GX are perennial collector targets, and their Rainbow Rare versions are among the set’s premium chases. Glaceon-GX has the added bonus of genuine competitive relevance (see below).

The rest of the chase

Lillie’s Full Art was one of the most in-demand Trainer cards of the whole period; Dialga-GX’s Rainbow Rare leads the legendary chases; and the gold secret Trainers and Energy round out the completist tier. Condition matters hugely on the rainbows — the textured foil whitens easily, so clean grades are scarce.

Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)

Cynthia (119/156) — the engine of a format

Cynthia (119/156) — the engine of a format

Don’t let the plain wording fool you. Cynthia shuffles your hand into your deck and draws six — a clean, no-downside refresh that fixed bad hands without throwing away good cards, unlike the discard-your-hand Supporters before her. She became a four-of in almost every deck for her entire time in Standard and is remembered as the defining draw Supporter of the Sun & Moon era. Illustrated in her regular print by Ken Sugimori, no less.

Magnezone

Metal rises: Magnezone & Dusk Mane Necrozma-GX

Ultra Prism didn’t just tune existing decks — it built a new pillar. Magnezone’s Ability accelerated Metal Energy from hand, and paired with the hard-hitting Dusk Mane Necrozma-GX it created the Metal archetype that became a top-tier deck almost overnight. Dialga-GX, with its extra-turn Timeless GX attack, gave those Metal builds a grinding control finish.

Glaceon-GX (39/156)

Glaceon-GX (39/156)

A real meta-answer. Glaceon-GX’s Ability could switch off the Abilities of your opponent’s GX and EX Pokémon — a hard counter to the Ability-reliant decks (hello, Zoroark-GX) that defined the format. It gave slower, control-leaning builds a genuine tool.

Zoom out and Ultra Prism’s real competitive legacy is consistency: by giving every deck — including the reigning Zoroark-GX toolbox — the Cynthia draw engine, it raised the whole format’s floor, while Metal decks gave it a fresh counter-pillar.

Trivia & Pop Culture

Two Japanese sets, one English release. Ultra Prism is a merge of the Japanese Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon expansions, named for the Gen VII sequel games and stitched together with secret rares into the 173-card English set.

The Cynthia phenomenon. It’s rare for one card to matter to both crowds equally, but Cynthia did it — a four-of staple for players and a grail full art for collectors. Few Trainer cards have ever been so universally wanted.

Prism Stars, a bright idea. The ◆ mechanic — big effects, but one-per-deck and Lost-Zoned when discarded — was one of the era’s neatest design experiments, and it ran through the rest of Sun & Moon. The next set, Forbidden Light, would lean into it further.

Straight out of Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon. Ultra Prism arrived just weeks after the November 2017 launch of Pokémon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon, and it wears that tie openly: the fused forms Dawn Wings Necrozma (Necrozma + Lunala) and Dusk Mane Necrozma (Necrozma + Solgaleo) come straight from those games’ story — right down to the “Ultra” in the set’s name.

Japanese Release & Promo Cards

The English Ultra Prism set was assembled from two simultaneous Japanese expansions, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. For reference, here are their original set lists and the era’s related promo cards, preserved from our earlier coverage.
