Got Miltank? is the 50th episode of Pokémon: Johto League Champions, the fourth season of the Pokémon anime, and the 207th episode of the English dub overall (Japanese episode 209, Bulbapedia code EP207). It first aired in Japan on 19 July 2001 and in the United States on 31 August 2002. It falls within the season’s Festivals, balloons & the first Gen III Pokémon stretch (EP201–EP207).
Synopsis
An injured Cyndaquil is carried to a secret desert oasis where a Miltank heals Pokémon with Heal Bell. A Team Rocket pit-and-net ambush at the desert’s edge goes awry: Cyndaquil clings to Weezing’s face and is shaken off, Ash shields it from Sludge, and when Flamethrower meets Smokescreen the blast hurls both Team Rocket and Cyndaquil away. Lost and hurt, Cyndaquil is scooped up by a Dugtrio, as is Meowth, who bashed his nose being dropped from the balloon.
Both are passed through a wall of guardian Exeggutor into a lush hollow inside a mesa, where Miltank’s Heal Bell cures them. Jessie and James try to barge in and are carried off in a Psychic-induced trance. Guided by two Quagsire, Crobat and Noctowl, the gang reach the mountain and Onix’s Dig tunnels beneath the guards, but the oasis Pokémon refuse to let humans near and keep Ash and Cyndaquil apart.
Team Rocket return by patched balloon, but their own Pokémon refuse to attack the Miltank Meowth has come to respect. James nets her anyway; Cyndaquil’s Flamethrower burns through the rope, Bayleef’s Razor Leaf cuts her free into the water and Pikachu’s Thunderbolt sends the trio skyward. Cyndaquil is reunited with Ash, and the sanctuary’s Pokémon let the group go on their promise to keep its secret.
Major Events
- A Miltank heals Pokémon at a desert oasis
- Meowth refuses to fight
- About 45 seconds cut in the dub
Trivia
- The English title plays on the "Got Milk?" advertising campaign.
- The screenplay is by Atsuhiro Tomioka.
- This is a stand-alone episode: it can be skipped without losing the thread of the Johto story.
- The Who’s That Pokémon? segment features Miltank in Japan, where it almost always matched the episode, but Cyndaquil in the US, where 4Kids picked the Pokémon at random.
Changes in the English Dub
- About 45 seconds cut: Meowth’s explanation of the oasis is heavily trimmed and every shot of Meowth and Cyndaquil suckling the Miltank is removed, although Brock still says “Milk Drink” and a teat is visible for a second.
