Chilling Reign booster pack

Sword & Shield—Chilling Reign swept into the Pokémon TCG on 18 June 2021 as the sixth main expansion of the Sword & Shield era — a huge 233-card set built around the Legendary Pokémon Calyrex and its two riders. Calyrex debuts in two VMAX forms: the defensive Ice Rider Calyrex and the aggressive Shadow Rider Calyrex.

Alongside the Calyrex twins, Chilling Reign brought the Galarian forms of the Legendary birds — Galarian Articuno V, Galarian Zapdos V and Galarian Moltres V — into the game, plus a deep supporting cast of Pokémon V and VMAX. It is a set defined as much by its gameplay as by its art.

Chilling Reign is famous for its enormous run of Full Art and Alternate Art cards. The undisputed crown jewel is the alternate-art Galarian Rapidash V, one of the most beautiful and valuable cards of the entire era, joined by gorgeous alternate arts of Galarian Moltres V and Blissey V and a full lineup of “character” Trainer cards. With 233 cards total (198 in the main set plus 35 secret rares), it is one of the largest and most collectible Sword & Shield sets.

Rule the Frozen Tundra! Seize the advantage with Pokémon of the frozen lands, with the powerful Ice Rider Calyrex VMAX and Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX—plus the Galarian forms of Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres!

Sword & Shield—Chilling Reign was released worldwide on 18 June 2021 and, like other Sword & Shield sets, was printed in large quantities across the full range of product types.

English sealed products included five different booster pack artworks (Galarian Articuno, Galarian Zapdos, Galarian Moltres, Ice Rider Calyrex and Shadow Rider Calyrex), the 36-pack booster box, two Elite Trainer Boxes — one for Ice Rider Calyrex and one for Shadow Rider Calyrex — and the Chilling Reign Build & Battle Box. Pokémon Center exclusive versions of the Elite Trainer Boxes were also produced.

Its deep run of Full Art and Alternate Art cards makes Chilling Reign one of the most collectible Sword & Shield sets, with the alternate-art Galarian Rapidash V towering over the rest of the set on the secondary market.

English version vs. Japanese Variations

Chilling Reign is an English compilation of two Japanese sets released simultaneously on 23 April 2021 — Silver Lance (S6H) and Jet-Black Spirit (S6K). Silver Lance is built around Ice Rider Calyrex, while Jet-Black Spirit centres on Shadow Rider Calyrex; the English release merged the two into a single 198-card set with an additional run of secret rares.

As with the whole era, the cards were renumbered and reorganised for the West, and the English set adds extra secret rares (199–233) — the rainbow, gold and alternate-art chase cards that sit above the standard 198-card numbering. Chilling Reign is especially prized for this deep run of Alternate Art illustrations.

Here are the Japanese products this expansion is built from — the Silver Lance (S6H) and Jet-Black Spirit (S6K) booster packs and boxes:

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards

Chilling Reign’s deep pool of Full Art and Alternate Art cards produced some of the era’s most valuable chase cards — led by one of the most admired illustrations in the entire Pokémon TCG.

Galarian Rapidash V

Galarian Rapidash V (alternate art) — #168/198

The crown jewel of Chilling Reign and one of the most sought-after cards of the entire Sword & Shield era. This alternate-art Galarian Rapidash V — the ethereal unicorn framed by a trainer in a misty forest — is a grail card for collectors and, by a wide margin, the set’s most valuable card.

Galarian Moltres V

Galarian Moltres V (alternate art) — #177/198

A dark, dramatic alternate art of Galarian Moltres V and one of the set’s premier chase cards. Its brooding illustration makes it a favourite among alt-art collectors.

Blissey V

Blissey V (alternate art) — #183/198
