The Right Place and the Right Mime is the 40th episode of Pokémon: Advanced Battle, the eighth season of the Pokémon anime, and the 405th episode of the English dub overall (Japanese episode 409, Bulbapedia code AG133). It first aired in Japan on 30 June 2005 and in the United States on 15 April 2006. It falls within the season’s Back to Kanto: the Battle Frontier begins stretch (EP132–EP136).
Synopsis
Delia’s Mr. Mime opens the door to find May’s Combusken, Bulbasaur and Munchlax, followed by May herself, who has come to Pallet Town too. At Professor Oak’s lab, Misty, Max and Tracey are looking at the Kanto first partner Pokémon when Max upsets the Squirtle, which runs straight into May’s arms. Professor Birch arrives with Oak and Ash and is promptly smothered by Ash’s affectionate Muk. Over tea Ash describes the Battle Frontier, and May announces that she plans to compete in Kanto Contests and will travel with him. Out in Oak’s fields Ash is reunited with his old team: Snorlax wakes up, his herd of Tauros stampede and carry him off until Tracey’s Marill pushes them back with Water Gun, and Bayleef rescues him with Vine Whip.
Team Rocket, disguised as the presenters of the real-life TV show Pokémon Sunday, lure the group into a net-covered pit while posing as a television crew. Grovyle frees everyone with Leaf Blade, and Noctowl and Swellow escape too. The trio’s giant vacuum robot is toppled by Snorlax’s Tackle, Ash’s Bulbasaur defeats Seviper and Cacnea with Solar Beam, Water Guns from Tracey’s Marill and Misty’s Azurill knock Team Rocket into their own machine, and Combusken’s Fire Spin and Pikachu’s Thunderbolt blast them off. It is the last time Tracey ever encounters Team Rocket, and the last time all of the Pokémon on Ash’s team and at the lab appear together until the Journeys series, many years later. Professor Birch, meanwhile, gets to meet Misty and Tracey for the first time.
Oak gives May the Squirtle to take with her, and she leaves her Bulbasaur at the lab, having already left Beautifly and Skitty at the Petalburg Gym. Ash leaves Torkoal and Glalie in Oak’s care. Oak gives Ash and May new Pokédexes, Tracey updates Max’s PokéNav, and Ash learns that the first Frontier facility is the Battle Factory near Cerulean City. The next morning Phanpy, now trained up at the lab, rejoins Ash’s team, the first time a Pokémon left at Oak’s has rejoined his regular party, and Ash, May and Max set out with Misty, with Brock arriving from Pewter City to rejoin them on the road. Several long-serving English voice actors, including Stuart Zagnit as Professor Oak, make their final appearances here.
