No. 0040 · Generation I · Balloon Pokémon
プクリンPukurin · Probably from pukupuku (plump, chubby), puripuri (in a huff) and kurikuri (big and round), built around purin (pudding) – Jigglypuff's own Japanese name; possibly also fūsen (balloon) and fukureru (to swell up).
The Balloon Pokémon · Normal/Fairy type · first seen in Pokémon Red & Green (1996)
01Overview
Meet Wigglytuff
Everything you need to know about the Balloon Pokémon — the creature behind the number.
Meet Wigglytuff, the Balloon Pokémon – the tall, plush, rabbit-eared final stage of the Igglybuff family. A baby Igglybuff that grows truly fond of its Trainer becomes Jigglypuff, and one touch of a Moon Stone turns Jigglypuff into this taller, fluffier and rather more dignified Pokémon. It spent its first five generations as a pure Normal type, until X and Y made it Normal/Fairy in 2013.
Everything about Wigglytuff says 'squeeze me'. Its pink-and-white coat is so fine and dense that anyone who strokes it struggles to stop – two Wigglytuff that snuggle up won't want to be parted – and the swirling curl on its forehead is said to feel perfectly heavenly. It is proud of that fur, and rightly so: when it moults as the seasons change, the shed fur is gathered and spun into luxurious yarn. Its huge, saucer-like eyes, meanwhile, stay coated in a thin film of tears that washes away any speck of dust.
“Its fur is extremely fine, dense, and supple. The exquisitely pleasant fur conveys an image of luxury.”
Pokédex · Pokémon Red (Japan), Green (Japan) & FireRed · 1996
Underneath the fluff is a body of pure rubber. Wigglytuff can keep inhaling and inflating seemingly without end – some swell to 20 times their normal size – and they even hold contests to see who can blow themselves up the biggest. That trick has a sharper side, too: catch one in a bad mood and it puffs itself up to an enormous size to intimidate you, and it may follow up with a Body Slam.
Because it only evolves with a stone, Wigglytuff is rarely met in the wild. In Kanto it lurks in the depths of Cerulean Cave, though it also hides in Unova's rustling grass and roams Paldea's North Province. On screen it has been a film diva opposite Misty's Psyduck, Harley's partner in a Contest Battle and the trusty helper of Nurse Joy all over Kalos.
For many fans, though, Wigglytuff will always be the Guildmaster. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, Darkness and Sky it runs Wigglytuff's Guild near Treasure Town, where the hero and partner learn to be explorers – a beaming, apple-obsessed and slightly baffling boss who calls everyone its friend, sleeps with its eyes open and hides frightening power behind that smile. It has since become a Supporter in Pokémon UNITE and Whitney's partner in Pokémon Masters EX.
How big is Wigglytuff?

Wigglytuff stands 1.0 m (3′03″) tall – a little higher than a kitchen worktop – and weighs 12.0 kg (26.5 lb), roughly as much as a two-year-old child, though a great deal fluffier.

Spin-offs & cameos
Super Smash Bros.
Wigglytuff has never stepped into a Super Smash Bros. arena – no fighter slot, no Poké Ball cameo, no trophy, sticker or spirit of its own – but it is never far away, because its pre-evolution is one of the series' original fighters. Jigglypuff has been on the roster of every game since the 1999 original, and Wigglytuff gets name-checked on its trophies: Melee's notes that Jigglypuff evolves into Wigglytuff after exposure to a Moon Stone, and Brawl's says the same. Since Brawl, Jigglypuff's Final Smash, Puff Up, has seen it inflate to giant size and shove everyone off the stage – exactly the kind of party trick Wigglytuff's Pokédex entries keep warning about.
Pokémon GO
Wigglytuff has been bouncing around Pokémon GO since launch day, 6 July 2016. Igglybuff needs 25 Candy to become Jigglypuff, and another 50 Jigglypuff Candy inflates it into Wigglytuff. Shiny Wigglytuff arrived on 16 April 2019 during Eggstravaganza, when shiny Jigglypuff could at last be evolved. It has been a two-star raid boss (28 April–1 May 2020) and a three-star one (12–15 October 2021), and on New Year's Day 2024 it dressed up in a festive ribbon for Pokémon GO New Year's 2024 – a look that returned for Road to Sinnoh from 19 to 23 February 2024. Its move pool keeps growing, too: Charm joined Pound and Feint Attack as a fast move on 9 July 2019, while Ice Beam, Disarming Voice, Icy Wind and Swift have been added alongside Dazzling Gleam, Play Rough and Hyper Beam among its charged attacks.
Wigglytuff's Jungle card – Lullaby, Do the Wave and all – is one of the digital cards to collect in this Game Boy adaptation, and it returns in the Japan-only sequel.
You won't catch one on the table: evolve a Jigglypuff instead to add Wigglytuff to your Pokédex.
Has its own Stadium Pokédex entry, and in Round 2 of Gym Leader Castle both Sabrina and Elite Four member Lorelei send one into battle.
Whitney fields a Wigglytuff packing ThunderPunch, Ice Punch and Psychic in Round 1 of the Johto Gym Leader Castle, while Sabrina and Misty each bring one in the Kanto castle.
Once again Wigglytuff is earned rather than caught – evolve a Jigglypuff to complete its Pokédex entry.
A rare piece in this block-matching puzzler, turning up in Huge Storage 4, Trozei Battle and Mr. Who's Den.
Wigglytuff runs the shop in Pokémon Square that sells new Friend Areas for your recruits. Evolve a Jigglypuff on your team and it settles in Sky Blue Plains, boasting: 'This fur you see is of the highest grade!'
The Guildmaster of Wigglytuff's Guild, where the hero and partner train as apprentices: a beaming, Perfect Apple-obsessed boss who calls everyone his friend yet beats Team Skull without breaking a sweat. After the credits he even poses as 'the grand master of all things bad' for a final showdown – and wild Wigglytuff can be recruited in the Marine Resort.
Found in Almia Castle, Browser no. 204 attacks by singing out musical notes and jumps to create shock waves; in the field it lends a hand with Tackle.
The Special Episode 'Igglybuff the Prodigy' flashes back to the Guildmaster's childhood, when little Igglybuff tagged along with Armaldo – his beloved 'Master', secretly a wanted outlaw – and found the Defend Globe he still treasures. In 'Bidoof's Wish' he leads the guild into Star Cave to rescue Bidoof from Team Rogue.
Turns up at Challenger's Ground in the Forest area once the story is over.
Evolves from Jigglypuff when its warrior battles while holding a Moon Stone, and attacks with Hyper Voice. It forms its strongest links with Chiyo, Hatsu and Oichi.
Fittingly, it appears in Magical Lake's 'Let's Sing a Song' – and in the Variety Battle 'I Dunno, Audino'.
Now a Fairy-type piece, it can be found on Stage 6 of the Blade-and-Shield Path.
Waits on Stage 299 in Roseus Center with the Stabilize+ skill, while a Winking Wigglytuff armed with Rock Break++ starred in its own 'Wigglytuff Appears' event.
Found in Origin Hideaway's Super Gene Laboratorium and Plasma Tundra's Waltzing Glade.
When the Guildmaster gets lost in a dungeon, Chatot's Connection Orb mission sends you to find him – rescue him and he joins your team, as cheerful as ever: 'My friendly friends! Hiya!'
Here since launch day, it evolves from Jigglypuff for 50 Candy, went shiny in April 2019 and has dressed up in a festive ribbon for New Year.
A cube-shaped Jigglypuff evolves into Wigglytuff at level 36, and its moves range from Sing and Rollout to Play Rough and even Dynamic Punch.
Whitney & Wigglytuff joined the game through Gym Scouts on 1 May 2025 – a Support pair whose sync move, Ballooning Frustration Normal Impact, is about as Wigglytuff as a move name gets.
Can be found on floors 50 to 56 of Joyous Tower, and in Mystery Houses in Stormy Sea, Western Cave, Buried Relic and Solar Cave.
A launch-roster melee Supporter that starts each match as Jigglypuff and evolves at level 4. Sing sends lingering opponents to sleep, and its Unite Move, Starlight Recital, shields nearby allies, clears their status conditions and makes them briefly immune to hindrances.
A Snoozing-type helper that specialises in skills – Energy for Everyone S restores energy to the whole team – and brings back Pecha Berries, Honey, Pure Oil and Soothing Cacao. Among its sleep styles are Puffed-Up Sleep and Atop-Belly Sleep.
No. 153 in Pokopia's Pokédex, Wigglytuff is a Hype and Trade specialist that likes a bright habitat and loves soft and cute things, play spaces, healing, group activities and sour flavours.
Wigglytuff joined the line-up of this online battle game with Version 1.2.0, leaving Jigglypuff and Igglybuff on the sidelines.
Moves
For most of its history Wigglytuff has been a Pokémon of very few level-up moves. From Red and Green to Black 2 and White 2, the Moon Stone left it with the same four starting moves (Sing, Disable, Defense Curl and DoubleSlap) and nothing more to learn by level, so trainers taught Jigglypuff its tricks first, from Pound and Body Slam to Ruby and Sapphire's Hyper Voice. The TM case did the rest, stuffed with Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, Psychic and Fire Blast, while Gold and Silver's Igglybuff brought the first Egg Moves, the eerie Perish Song included.
X and Y made Wigglytuff part Fairy and finally handed it moves of its own, Double-Edge and Play Rough, at the start. Sword and Shield went much further, folding everything Igglybuff and Jigglypuff know into a 21-move starting list, and Scarlet and Violet keep it, holding back only Play Rough until level 5. Legends: Z-A redraws the whole thing as a proper levelling curve, from Tackle and Charm up to Perish Song at 50 and, for the first time, Moonblast at 53.
Signature moves
Wigglytuff's lullaby is a starting move in every main game from Red and Green to Scarlet and Violet, Let's Go included. Legends: Z-A keeps it at level 1 and stocks it as TM111 as well.
The original rapid-fire slapping attack, spelled DoubleSlap until X and Y. Wigglytuff knew it from the start in every game from Red and Green to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon; then Sword and Shield dropped it, and an old Wigglytuff that still knows it can't use it there.
Jigglypuff's booming shout arrived in Ruby and Sapphire, but for years Wigglytuff could only keep it by learning it before the Moon Stone came out. The tutors in Black 2 and White 2, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, and Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon taught it directly, and since Sword and Shield it has been a starting move (level 36 in Legends: Z-A).
The Fairy-type scuffle that came with Wigglytuff's new Fairy typing in X and Y, as a brand-new starting move. Let's Go teaches it by TM44, and in Scarlet and Violet it is the only move Wigglytuff learns after level 1, at level 5.
A haunting Egg Move passed down from Marill since Gold and Silver, through chain breeding: every Pokémon that hears it faints after three turns unless it switches out. Legends: Z-A finally teaches it by level, at 50.
The reckless full-body charge. Red and Blue taught it by TM10; after that it mostly had to be learned as a Jigglypuff (or from a Game Boy Advance move tutor) until X and Y made it a starting move. It has hit for 120 since Gold and Silver, and Legends: Z-A puts it at level 44.
Legends: Z-A is the first game that lets Wigglytuff learn this Fairy-type finisher at all, as the last move on its level-up list, at 53.
Complete learnsets
Generation I · Red, Green, Blue & Yellow4 level-up · 33 TM/HM
In Red, Green and Blue a wild Wigglytuff hides deep in Cerulean Cave, while Yellow offers one as a prize at the Rocket Game Corner in Celadon City; otherwise a Moon Stone turns a Jigglypuff into one. Evolving freezes its level-up list at four moves, all known from the start: Sing, Disable, Defense Curl and DoubleSlap. Pound has to be learned as a Jigglypuff, but Rest, Body Slam and Double-Edge come back through the TM case, which holds 31 TMs (Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, Psychic and Fire Blast among them) plus Strength and Flash. Wigglytuff is a pure Normal type in this era, every move's category is set by its type, and moves keep their old spellings (DoubleSlap, BubbleBeam, SolarBeam). The transfer list shows Gold, Silver and Crystal moves a Wigglytuff can carry back through the Time Capsule.

There are no wild Wigglytuff in Gold, Silver or Crystal, so a Jigglypuff and a Moon Stone are the only way to get one. Its four starting moves are unchanged, and Rollout now comes from TM04. Igglybuff's debut brings breeding, and Faint Attack, Perish Song and Present can all be passed down through chain breeding. Crystal's move tutor adds Flamethrower, Ice Beam and Thunderbolt. Some moves can only be picked up before evolving: Pound, Body Slam and Double-Edge as a Jigglypuff; Charm, Sweet Kiss and Icy Wind (TM16) as an Igglybuff; Dizzy Punch from Crystal's Odd Egg; and Mimic, Petal Dance and Scary Face on event Igglybuff from Pokémon Center events. Categories still follow type, Curse is ???-type and Hidden Power's category depends on the type it rolls.

Generation III · Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed & LeafGreen (tutor data also covers XD)4 level-up · 33 TM/HM · 5 egg · 23 tutor
Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed and LeafGreen all rely on the Moon Stone, and Pokémon Colosseum and XD have no Wigglytuff of their own. The starting four stay the same. Jigglypuff now learns the booming Hyper Voice, which Wigglytuff can only get by learning it before evolving. In Ruby and Sapphire, Body Slam, Mimic and Double-Edge also have to be taught to Jigglypuff first (Rollout too, in FireRed and LeafGreen as well), because the other games' move tutors teach them directly. Those tutors are the big story: 23 moves in all, with ten in FireRed and LeafGreen, 22 in Emerald and nine in Pokémon XD. Fake Tears and Wish join the Egg Moves, Igglybuff can learn Icy Wind from the Emerald and XD tutors, and an Igglybuff from a PokéPark Egg event came with Tickle. Categories still follow type, and there is no transfer list.

Generation IV · Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold & SoulSilver4 level-up · 51 TM/HM · 8 egg · 18 tutor
Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold and SoulSilver stick with the Moon Stone, and Wigglytuff brought over from the Game Boy Advance games turns up in Pal Park's Field area. This is the first generation where each move has its own physical or special category, which is why Hyper Beam now counts as special. The level-up list is still the classic four. Jigglypuff adds Wake-Up Slap to the moves worth learning before evolving, Igglybuff adds Copycat, and Igglybuff can also pick up Uproar from a move tutor in Platinum, HeartGold and SoulSilver. Those tutors teach Wigglytuff 18 moves of its own (12 in Platinum, all 18 in HeartGold and SoulSilver), and Covet, Gravity and Last Resort are new Egg Moves. The transfer list holds Generation III tutor moves that no Generation IV game teaches, plus Tickle from the PokéPark Egg.

Generation V · Black, White, Black 2 & White 24 level-up · 45 TM/HM · 11 egg · 23 tutor
Black and White finally put Wigglytuff in the wild: it hides in rustling grass on Route 14, and Black 2 and White 2 move it to Routes 1 and 2 and the Dreamyard. Its own level-up list is unchanged, but Black 2 and White 2 bring 23 tutor moves, Hyper Voice and Stealth Rock among them, so Hyper Voice no longer has to come from Jigglypuff there. Captivate, Punishment and Sleep Talk join the Egg Moves, Sleep Talk only from a father that learned it in an earlier generation. Igglybuff can learn Uproar from a Black 2 and White 2 tutor, and a Dream World Igglybuff in Black and White could arrive knowing Helping Hand. New TMs include Round, Echoed Voice, Retaliate, Work Up and Wild Charge.

Generation VI · X, Y, Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire6 level-up · 49 TM/HM · 13 egg · 25 tutor
The big change: from X and Y onwards Wigglytuff is Normal and Fairy, so its Fairy moves get the same-type bonus too, and Dazzling Gleam arrives on TM99. In X, Y, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire it still evolves from Jigglypuff with a Moon Stone. Its starting list grows for the first time: Double-Edge and Play Rough join Sing, Disable, Defense Curl and Double Slap at level 1 (Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire simply list Disable and Defense Curl the other way round). Disarming Voice and Play Nice are new Jigglypuff moves to grab before evolving, and Heal Pulse and Misty Terrain become Egg Moves. Secret Power (TM94) and all 25 tutor moves are Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire only. The squashed old names are gone (Double Slap, Solar Beam, Thunder Punch), and Thunderbolt, Ice Beam and Flamethrower drop to 90 power.

Generation VII · Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon6 level-up · 43 TM/HM · 13 egg · 28 tutor
Wigglytuff still evolves from Jigglypuff with a Moon Stone in Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, and one list of six starting moves covers all four games. There are 43 TMs and no HMs any more. Jigglypuff's new Stockpile, Swallow and Spit Up trio can only be learned before evolving. Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon add 28 tutor moves, Ally Switch, Laser Focus and Telekinesis included, and they teach Hyper Voice directly, while in Sun and Moon it has to come from Jigglypuff. Igglybuff can learn Uproar from the Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon tutors. The transfer list now reaches all the way back to Red and Blue, with 30 moves from older games, from Bubble Beam to Zap Cannon.

Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!4 level-up · 32 TM/HM
Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! have no wild Wigglytuff: it evolves from Jigglypuff with a Moon Stone. Its moves are rebuilt for these games, with Sing, Pound, Minimize and Bide at the start. There is no breeding and no move tutor, so Defense Curl, Double Slap, Disable, Body Slam, Mimic and Double-Edge have to be learned as a Jigglypuff. The 32 TMs include Play Rough and Dazzling Gleam, and Solar Beam is listed at 200 power here.

Generation VIII · Sword & Shield (Version 1.2.0+ and Expansion Pass), Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl21 level-up · 105 TM/HM · 18 egg · 3 tutor
Wigglytuff was not in Sword and Shield at launch: it can be traded in from Version 1.2.0, the update released alongside The Isle of Armor. With the Expansion Pass it wanders the Fields of Honor, Soothing Wetlands, Loop Lagoon and Training Lowlands and appears in Max Raid Battles on the Isle of Armor, and The Crown Tundra adds it to Dynamax Adventures in the Max Lair. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl bring back the Moon Stone. Both pairs share one starting list of 21 moves that covers everything Igglybuff and Jigglypuff learn, so nothing has to be taught before evolving any more. Sword and Shield offer 35 TMs and 25 TRs, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl 45 TMs; Rollout is now an Egg Move, and the Expansion Pass move tutor teaches Expanding Force, Misty Explosion and Steel Roller. Of the 55 moves an older Wigglytuff can bring along, 17, Double Slap and Wake-Up Slap among them, can't be used in Sword and Shield. Wigglytuff does not appear in Legends: Arceus.

Generation IX · Scarlet & Violet (incl. The Teal Mask and The Indigo Disk)21 level-up · 81 TM/HM · 8 egg
Scarlet and Violet have Wigglytuff from the start: it lives in North Province (Area One) and turns up in 4★ Tera Raid Battles. The 21-move list from Sword and Shield carries over almost unchanged, except that Play Rough now arrives at level 5 instead of level 1. The TM list grows to 81 moves, Tera Blast, Calm Mind, Metronome and Alluring Voice included. Covet, Gravity, Last Resort, Perish Song, Present and Rollout come from parents, while Heal Pulse and Wish can only be copied with a Mirror Herb. There are no move tutors. Values are as in these games, so Rest has just 5 PP here.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A (Version 2.0.0+ and Mega Dimension)17 level-up · 53 TM/HM
Wigglytuff joined Legends: Z-A with Version 2.0.0, which made it possible to trade one in, and the Mega Dimension expansion adds it to the 4★ Fairy-type wild zones of Hyperspace Lumiose. Moves here have no PP or accuracy: each has the level at which it is learned, a level at which it becomes a Plus Move, its power and a cooldown. For once Wigglytuff gets a real levelling curve of 17 moves, from Tackle, Sing, Charm and Disarming Voice up to Wish at 40, Perish Song at 50 and Moonblast at 53. Sing is also TM111 and Metronome TM099. There is no breeding or tutoring. Values are as in this game, so Rollout has 60 power and Tri Attack 40.

Wigglytuff in the anime
Debut M01Pokémon: The First Movie – Mewtwo Strikes Back · First major role EP069Lights, Camera, Quack-tion · Its appearances on screen, and 5 other trainers who raised one.
Wigglytuff's anime career is a tale of two personalities. It made its debut in Mewtwo Strikes Back as one of the Trainers' Pokémon that Mewtwo captured and cloned, then took centre stage in its first TV episode as the impossible leading lady of Pokémon in Love, a diva so demanding that only Misty's Psyduck could bear to share the screen with it. Advanced Generation revealed a darker side, as Harley's glowering Wigglytuff puffed, floated and Double Slapped its way through a Kanto Grand Festival Double Battle before May finally brought it down.
Its true calling arrived in Kalos, where Wigglytuff take over from Chansey and Audino as the Nurse Joys' assistants. They staff Pokémon Centers right across the XY series, and one clumsy newcomer proved its worth by calming a rampaging Salamence with Heal Pulse. Add the Guildmaster of Wigglytuff's Guild in the Mystery Dungeon specials, a Lass's Wigglytuff in Pokémon Origins and a trail of cameos from Johto to Paldea, and it is a career full of heart. Ash has never owned one, but in Kalos he could hardly visit a Pokémon Center without meeting one.

Now: Assisting Nurse Joys at Pokémon Centers across Kalos
Ash had barely set foot in Kalos when he learned that the local Nurse Joys do things differently: their assistants are Wigglytuff (XY003). A few days later a Nurse Joy and her Wigglytuff, drawn by the sounds of a Vespiquen attack, found Serena and Fennekin and pointed them to the nearby Pokémon Center (XY004).
From then on, a Wigglytuff was part of the furniture at almost every Pokémon Center the heroes visited. One treated a weakened Scatterbug in the emergency room and brought it back fully recovered (XY012), and another appeared alongside its Nurse Joy in a Pokévision video that made the top ten (XY021). A Wigglytuff even co-narrated the preview for The Clumsy Crier Quiets the Chaos! alongside Ash and Pikachu at the end of Splitting Heirs! (XY045).
That episode, The Clumsy Crier Quiets the Chaos! (XY046), belongs to a brand-new Wigglytuff who simply cannot stop falling over. It scatters a tray of Poké Balls across the floor, accidentally headbutts Meowth into a wall and, while carrying a Teddiursa, trips and sends it flying. Pikachu tries to cheer it up, and Nurse Joy explains why Wigglytuff matter so much in Kalos: long ago, a single Wigglytuff calmed a rampaging outbreak of Flygon and healed the injured, and every Pokémon Center has had a Wigglytuff helper ever since.
Its moment arrives the next day. Clemont's Mechanized Motivator blows up on Wigglytuff's head, Team Rocket, disguised as paramedics, carry it off with Pikachu, and their getaway is blocked by a Salamence driven wild by their own hypnosis device. Wigglytuff walks calmly into its Dragon Breath, untouched thanks to its Fairy typing, throws up Protect when Salamence turns its Flamethrower on Nurse Joy, then calms the Dragon with Heal Pulse so Ash can pull the device off. When Nurse Joy credits the heroes, Ash insists the credit belongs to Wigglytuff, and Joy asks it to be her assistant. Wigglytuff accepts.
Life at the Pokémon Center had its gentler moments too. At the Pledging Tree ceremony a Nurse Joy gave her Wigglytuff a present (XY059); during a town's Gourgeist Festival, Nurse Joy and Wigglytuff surprised the heroes by dressing up as each other (XY082); and on a rainy day one Wigglytuff gave Ash's team their check-ups, led Clemont to the electrics during a blackout and rushed an over-stuffed Chespin off for treatment (XY084).
Not every Kalos nurse got one, though. In A Giga Battle with Mega Results! (XY096) a Nurse Joy recalls being assigned an Audino while her classmates all received Wigglytuff, much to her dismay. Elsewhere the regulars kept busy: one pushed a tray with Pikachu sitting on top (XY105), and another greeted Alain at the Pokémon Center and caught sight of Ash through the window (XY116).
The Kalos Wigglytuff also turned up beside Nurse Joy in Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel (M19), and years later one appeared on a video in For Sure! 'Cause Sprigatito's with Me! (HZ003), the episode that brought Nurse Joy into Pokémon Horizons.
Personality
Kalos's Wigglytuff are expert medical assistants, gentle with their patients and devoted to their Nurse Joys, and their Heal Pulse can soothe a tired Pokémon or calm a furious one. The newcomer of XY046 is the most endearing of all: a sensitive, accident-prone soul who trips over its own feet and bursts into tears at a kind word, yet finds real courage the moment its Nurse Joy is in danger.

First seen: AG181Thinning the Hoard!
Trust Harley to find the one Wigglytuff with a villain's scowl: his has a purple glare across its face that suits its Trainer perfectly. He brought it out for the Double Battle stage of the Kanto Grand Festival in Thinning the Hoard! (AG181), pairing it with Cacturne against May's Munchlax and Eevee. Wigglytuff puffed itself up to twice its size to shrug off their opening attacks, and even after Cacturne fell it kept May on the back foot, grabbing both opponents with its ears for a Double Slap and floating out of reach of Solar Beam and Shadow Ball. May turned the tables by making her Pokémon's attacks collide behind it, knocking it off balance, and Munchlax leapt from Eevee's tail to land the winning Focus Punch, sending May into the quarter-finals. Harley and his Wigglytuff turned up once more in a flashback in A Full Course Tag Battle! (DP076), as May told Dawn about her rivals.

First seen: Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time & Darkness
The Mystery Dungeon specials bring the games' famous Guildmaster to the screen. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time & Darkness, a squabble over a mission reward ends with Team Razor Wind blasted clean out of the guild by his Hyper Voice. Piplup and Chimchar meet the Guildmaster in person, hear from his right-hand Pokémon Chatot about the stolen Time Gears and join up as Team Poképals, and when Shinx's sister, cured by the Gabite Scale they fetched, rewards them with a Luxray Fang, Chatot pockets it under the guild rule that all rewards go to Wigglytuff. He returns in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky – Beyond Time & Darkness, remarking that the Relic Fragment chose Chimchar and Piplup and, at one point, drifting off to sleep with his eyes wide open. When a dark cloud gathers over the guild, he stops Corphish and Sunflora from attacking it, saying not even his Hyper Voice could stop it, and asks everyone to have faith in Team Poképals as the guild joins hands and time freezes.

First seen: EP069Lights, Camera, Quack-tion
Wigglytuff's TV debut was a star turn in every sense. Director Cleavon Schpielbunk hired it as the leading lady of his all-Pokémon film Pokémon in Love, but its prima-donna attitude drove its original co-star, an Abra, to teleport off the set, and it scared away almost every hopeful at the auditions, Brock's Vulpix included. Team Rocket's Pokémon fared worst of all: Wigglytuff took an instant dislike to them and sent them packing with Double Slap. In the end only Misty's Psyduck was oblivious enough to put up with its diva demands, and the pair played lovers caught in a feud between Water types and Normal types. When Team Rocket captured the cast, Psyduck freed Wigglytuff and everyone else with Confusion, impressing his co-star, and that night the two co-stars were seen together by the lake.

First seen: M01Pokémon: The First Movie – Mewtwo Strikes Back
Neesha, one of the Trainers invited to Mewtwo's fortress on New Island, kept a Wigglytuff on a team that also included her Blastoise, Vileplume, Dewgong, Ninetales and Rapidash. Like the other Trainers' Pokémon, it was captured by Mewtwo and cloned, and a Wigglytuff clone is still among Mewtwo's copies in Mewtwo Returns. The CGI remake Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution (M22) put Neesha's Wigglytuff through the very same ordeal.
Ash & Wigglytuff
Ash has never owned a Wigglytuff, but he has crossed paths with plenty. During filming in Lights, Camera, Quack-tion (EP069), Pikachu was sent flying into the diva star of Pokémon in Love, and it was not amused. In Kalos, he soon found that the Nurse Joys there work with Wigglytuff instead of Chansey (XY003). And when a clumsy new Wigglytuff calmed a rampaging Salamence in The Clumsy Crier Quiets the Chaos! (XY046), it was Ash who insisted the credit belonged to Wigglytuff.

Anime trivia
- The Clumsy Crier Quiets the Chaos! (XY046) was the first time the anime showed a Fairy-type Pokémon unaffected by a Dragon-type move: Nurse Joy's Wigglytuff strolled straight through Salamence's Dragon Breath.
- The Kalos Nurse Joys' Wigglytuff are drawn much larger than the other Wigglytuff seen in the anime, and they work in a little apron and a cap bearing a Poké Ball symbol.
- Pokémon in Love, the film-within-an-episode of Lights, Camera, Quack-tion (EP069), is a Romeo and Juliet story with Misty's Psyduck as Romeo, Wigglytuff as Juliet, and Water types and Normal types as the feuding families. Unlike Shakespeare's play, only Romeo dies: the feud ends when Wigglytuff mourns him.
- In English, Michele Knotz, the voice of Jessie since Battle Frontier, plays both Harley's Wigglytuff and the Kalos Nurse Joys' Wigglytuff, while Guildmaster Wigglytuff is voiced by Sarah Natochenny, the voice of Ash himself.
- Wigglytuff's name trips people up: James calls it 'Wigglypuff' in the English dub of XY046, the Latin American Spanish dub calls Harley's Wigglytuff 'Jigglytuff', and in the Brazilian Portuguese dub of The Big Balloon Blow-Up (EP202) Misty calls a Wigglytuff balloon a Jigglypuff balloon.
- In That's Just Swellow (AG080), one of Ash's PokéRinger opponents rides a Wigglytuff-shaped balloon, and at the start of the match its arms are mistakenly coloured white instead of pink.

Wigglytuff in the movies
3 films, 2 Pikachu shorts and 3 specials featuring Wigglytuff.
Wigglytuff made it to the cinema before it reached the TV series. Its first animated role came in Mewtwo Strikes Back (1998), as one of the Trainer Neesha's team, captured and cloned by Mewtwo; the clone resurfaced on Mount Quena in Mewtwo Returns, and the whole story was replayed in CG for Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution. In between it's a dependable extra: a wild one senses trouble in The Power of One, another helps rescue Togepi in Pikachu's Rescue Adventure, and one runs the balloon stall at Pikachu's Summer Festival. Its real star turn came in the two Mystery Dungeon specials, which cast it as the beaming, reward-hoarding, eyes-open-napping Guildmaster of Wigglytuff's Guild. It sits out Detective Pikachu and Secrets of the Jungle.

Neesha is one of the Trainers who brave Mewtwo's storm to reach New Island, and Wigglytuff is part of her team, alongside her Blastoise Shellshocker, Dewgong, Ninetales, Vileplume and Rapidash. Shellshocker takes on Mewtwo's cloned Blastoise and loses, and then every one of Neesha's Pokémon, Wigglytuff included, is snatched up by Mewtwo's Poké Balls and copied, so a clone Wigglytuff joins Mewtwo's army. When it's all over, Mewtwo wipes everyone's memories and sends them back to Old Shore Wharf. This was Wigglytuff's first appearance in animation, voiced in English by Rachael Lillis.

When a storm blows in, a Wigglytuff joins Pikachu and the other Trainers' Pokémon and an Elekid to save the Exeggcute nests and Misty's Togepi. The short opened for The Power of One in cinemas. - PK13Pikachu's Summer Festival (2004) · A Wigglytuff running a festival stall
The short opens with Pokémon getting a summer festival ready, and Wigglytuff is on balloon duty, putting up Pokémon balloons while Lombre hangs the masks and Mudkip sorts the drinks. Then Pikachu, Plusle and Minun come racing along the beach to join the fun. The short was never released in English.
TV specials
- Pokémon: Mewtwo Returns (2000)
The cloned Wigglytuff from the first film turns up again. It's one of the clones living with Mewtwo on Mount Quena, a mountain ringed by cliffs that are almost impossible to climb. - Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time & Darkness (2007)
Wigglytuff's biggest screen role came in this special made for the Explorers games. As Chimchar works up the courage to join Wigglytuff's Guild, the Guildmaster's Hyper Voice blasts the squabbling Team Razor Wind right out of the building. Chimchar and his new friend Piplup, a human turned into a Pokémon, sign up as Team Poképals, and the Guildmaster sends them after a Gabite Scale to cure Shinx's sick sister. When Shinx rewards them with a Luxray Fang, Chatot swipes it straight away: guild rules say every reward goes to Wigglytuff. - Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky – Beyond Time & Darkness (2009)
The guild sends Lapras to carry Team Poképals to the Hidden Land, and back home the Guildmaster declares that Chimchar and Piplup were chosen by the Relic Fragment. Then he nods off with his eyes wide open. When a dark cloud gathers over the guild and Corphish and Sunflora get ready to attack it, Wigglytuff stops them, because not even his Hyper Voice could stop this one. He asks everyone to have faith in Team Poképals, and the guild members join hands as time freezes. As in the first special, he's voiced by Yū Kobayashi in Japanese and Sarah Natochenny, also Ash's English voice, in the dub.

Wigglytuff in the Pokémon TCG
66 cards since 1999, oldest first. Tap any card to see it full size.
Wigglytuff bounced into the card game with Jungle in 1999, and Mitsuhiro Arita's holo quickly became one of the early tournament scene's favourite attackers. Its Do the Wave attack grew with every Pokémon on your Bench, so players crammed in quick Basics to hit for 60 a turn. Later cards kept the party spirit but leaned into Wigglytuff's softer side: Neo Destiny gave it both a mischievous Dark form and a generous Light one that helps everyone evolve, Skyridge and EX FireRed & LeafGreen turned it into a helpful Bench-sitter that patches up or soothes the Active Pokémon, and its lullabies never stopped, from the 2004 Wigglytuff ex that sang every Defending Pokémon to sleep to Crystal Guardians' Fluffy Fur, which sends attackers dozing, and Great Encounters' Good Night Melody. Japan even had extras of its own, including a 1998 vending-machine card and Whitney's Wigglytuff in Pokémon VS.
Its cards also trace the game's shifting types. Wigglytuff stayed Colorless for 15 years, turned Fairy with XY in 2014 (the year it shared top billing on the XY Trainer Kit: Bisharp & Wigglytuff), became Psychic once the Fairy type was retired in Sword & Shield, and floated back to Colorless for the 151 Wigglytuff ex and again in the Mega Evolution era. The artwork evolved just as much: classic holos and e-Reader strips gave way to scenes like Atsuko Nishida's, with a Moon Stone tucked into the picture, a glossy 5ban Graphics render for its only Pokémon-GX in Hidden Fates, full-art and Shiny Wigglytuff ex prints in 151 and Paldean Fates, and REND's Battle Cage scene in Phantasmal Flames. In TCG Pocket it has become a familiar face too, with a Wigglytuff ex in the launch set and several of its earlier card artworks given a second life.

Wigglytuff in manga, books & other media
From the earliest manga to story books and songs.
Off screen, Wigglytuff has played everything from a society lady to a Team Star bodyguard. Magical Pokémon Journey makes it Jigglypuff's grand big sister, mistress of a mansion full of Jigglypuff maids and the object of a shy Arbok's affections; their disastrous obstacle-course date even gave an American comic its title, A Date with Wigglytuff. In Pokémon Adventures, Green's Jiggly finally evolves in the FireRed & LeafGreen chapters, Ortega's Wigglytuff goes down in flames against Violet, and the Guildmaster gets a manga of his own in Blazing Exploration Team. On the bookshelf it hides on a nightgown in a 1997 picture book, gets licked by Lickitung in another and waits to be folded in Pokémon Origami 2. In music it closes a verse of the Pokérap, sits between Magneton and Squirtle in Japan's name-them-all song and turns up with Mina's Fairy crew in the GOTCHA! video.

Wigglytuff trivia
Name origins, design secrets and the facts that make Wigglytuff such a fan favourite.
What’s in a name?
'Wigglytuff' keeps the family's wobbly theme going: 'wiggly', for that soft, jiggling body, plus 'tuft' – a nod to the curl of fur on its forehead – or perhaps 'tough'. Its Japanese name, プクリン (Pukurin), slips an extra syllable into Jigglypuff's Japanese name, Purin (pudding), and seems to draw on pukupuku (plump and chubby), puripuri (in a huff) and kurikuri (big and round) – a neat summary of its puffed-up body, its temper and those enormous eyes. It may also hint at fūsen (balloon) and fukureru (to swell up). In French it is Grodoudou, from gros (big) plus doux and doudou, words for softness and comfort, with a wink at the roudoudou caramel sweet, while in German it is Knuddeluff, from knuddeln (to cuddle) and 'fluff'.
Design origins
Wigglytuff is, first and foremost, a balloon: a rubbery body that can be blown up until it seems ready to burst. Its plush fur and the family's lullabies suggest the singing soft toys that soothe small children to sleep, its round shape recalls a powder puff or a cream puff, and its pink rubberiness – plus its ability to learn Bounce – could just as easily make it a bouncing rubber ball. The swirl on its head may be a dollop of custard or a soft-serve curl, which fits the English name it carried while Red and Green were being made: 'Custard'. Those long, rabbit-like ears hint at the Moon rabbit of East Asian folklore – apt for a Pokémon that evolves with a Moon Stone and later joined the Moon-linked Fairy type. Its look has wobbled over the years, too: until Generation III its game sprites ended the white belly patch below its mouth, unlike its artwork; a 1999 CoroCoro preview of a Game Boy Color Pokémon Picross showed it with a white tuft and a pink stomach; and the Neo Destiny card Dark Wigglytuff gave it a white tuft, white soles and solid pink ears.
