01Overview
Meet Abra
Everything you need to know about the Psi Pokémon — the creature behind the number.
Abra is the Psi Pokémon, a drowsy little psychic that sets one of Kanto's classic families in motion: it becomes Kadabra at level 16 and, after a trade, the brainy Alakazam. It is a small, mostly yellow biped with a fox-like, kite-shaped face, short pointed ears and eyes that are nearly always shut. Black skin peeks out between the segments of its body, brown plates sit on its shoulders and chest like a tiny suit of armour, and a long, thick tail ends in a brown band near the tip.
Its defining habit is sleep – around 18 hours of it every day. Using telepathy puts such a strain on its brain that an Abra which doesn't rest enough can't use its powers at all. Even while snoozing it keeps a telepathic radar switched on, and it can hypnotise itself so that it teleports out of harm's way without ever waking. The deeper it sleeps, the further it warps, and the contents of its dreams are said to shape the powers it wields.
“Using its ability to read minds, it will identify impending danger and Teleport to safety.”
Pokédex · Pokémon Blue (Japan), Red & Blue · 1996
Abra is a born escape artist rather than a fighter. It reads minds to spot trouble before it arrives and vanishes before an attack can land, and researchers once observed it changing location roughly once an hour. It can teleport into the treetops in its sleep to pick berries, though an Abra that wakes somewhere unfamiliar is liable to panic. Random teleports can even leave behind illusory copies of itself, and anyone hoping to catch one is advised to clear their mind first.
For players, Abra is a rite of passage. In the classic games it learns nothing but Teleport by levelling up, and a wild one will often blink out of battle on its very first turn, so catching one means striking fast – or saving up coins at Celadon City's Rocket Game Corner. Raising it takes patience too, because it can barely take a hit, but the reward is the psychic powerhouse Alakazam.
That knack for disappearing follows Abra everywhere. Sabrina's Abra dozed through the start of its Gym battle with Ash's Pikachu, teleported behind it and then evolved into Kadabra mid-match. In Pokémon GO it is famously hard to keep hold of, and in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate it pops out of a Poké Ball to teleport opponents elsewhere on the stage – or clean off it.
How big is Abra?

At 0.9 m Abra stands about as tall as a kitchen worktop, and at 19.5 kg it weighs roughly as much as a Border Collie – though it would much rather nap than fetch.

Abra in the video games
Base stat total 310 · 24 core-series games · 25 spin-offs · every move it learns, generation by generation.
Base stats
Abra's base stats have never changed (310 in total). In Red, Blue and Yellow a single Special stat of 105 covered both its special attack and special defence; when Gold & Silver split Special in two, Abra kept 105 Sp. Atk but got only 55 Sp. Def. Its base friendship was 70 in Generations II–VII and has been 50 since Sword & Shield, and its base experience yield dropped from 73 (Generations I–III) and 75 (Generation IV) to 62.
Abilities
- Synchronizesince Gen III
If an opponent burns, paralyses or poisons Abra, the attacker is hit with the same condition. - Inner Focussince Gen III
Abra's concentration is unbreakable, so it never flinches; from Sword & Shield it also shrugs off Intimidate. - Magic GuardHidden abilitysince Gen V
Abra only takes damage from direct attacks, ignoring poison, burns, weather, recoil and entry hazards.
Type matchups
How hard each attacking type hits a Psychic Pokémon.
In Red, Blue and Yellow, Ghost-type moves had no effect on Psychic types and the Dark type did not exist yet, so Bug was Abra's only weakness. From Gold & Silver onwards, Ghost- and Dark-type moves both hit it for double damage.

Sprites through the ages
Spin-offs & cameos
Super Smash Bros.
Abra pops up in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (2018) as a Poké Ball Pokémon, and it is a sneaky one. Rather than attacking directly, it uses Teleport on an opponent, whisking them away to another part of the stage – or even clean off it. Abra also appears as a spirit: its Spirit Battle takes place on the Saffron City stage, where you have one minute to defeat a yellow Mewtwo while Poké Balls are the only items on offer.
Pokémon GO
Abra has been in Pokémon GO since launch day on 6 July 2016, and true to form it is maddening to keep hold of: its flee rate is 99%. Evolving it takes 25 Candy for Kadabra and 100 more for Alakazam – or no Candy at all for a Kadabra received in a trade – and as a buddy it earns Candy every 3 km. Its big day was Community Day on 25 April 2020, which debuted Shiny Abra, came with the ticketed Special Research 'Investigating Illusions' and taught Alakazam evolved during the event the exclusive move Counter. Shadow Abra arrived on 5 September 2019, Abra headlined a Spotlight Hour on 8 June 2021, and Dynamax Abra joined one-star Max Battles on 15 September 2025. Further up the line, Mega Alakazam burst into Mega Raids on 6 September 2022 during Psychic Spectacular 2022, available as a Shiny from day one.
Flip your way to Cerulean City on either table, or Celadon City on the Blue Field, and Abra is up for grabs.
Battles in glorious 3D and has its own Stadium Pokédex entry – complete with puppet-like, jointed animations.
Lurks in the Cave area on both the Ruby and Sapphire Fields.
A common piece in the falling-block puzzles, found in Huge Storage 5 and Mr. Who's Den.
Recruit it in Buried Relic, Wish Cave or Solar Cave and it moves into the Decrepit Lab – then talks in its sleep for the rest of the adventure.
Browser #029 floats around Kisara Plain and lends a Psychic-type Poké Assist once captured.
Waits to be recruited on floors B1F–B17F of the Lost Wilderness.
Browser #183 warps around the Chroma Highlands to dodge your Styler – listen for its cry to know when to strike.
Still dozing in the Lost Wilderness, floors B1F–B17F.
Befriend it in the Haunted Zone; it loves a nap there and in the Tree House, but has no time for Rotom's Spooky Shoot-'em-Up.
Has napped all over the park, but the Tech Area is its favourite spot.
Found in the kingdom of Illusio, it battles with Teleport and evolves into Kadabra once its Attack reaches 83.
Appears in Stage 1 of the Safari Jungle – but only on Thursdays.
Arrived through a Pokémon Safari event, with the Rock Break skill to smash a breakable rock disruption.
Joins your team simply by being spoken to in Baram Town – between yawns.
In the game since launch, with a 99% flee rate that makes every catch a small victory; it starred in Community Day in April 2020.
Bursts out of a Poké Ball to teleport a rival to another part of the stage – or right off it.
Shows up in several Seas, including the Charizard, Gengar, Mimikyu and Bulbasaur Seas.
Hatches from an Egg to become a sync partner for your own player character.
Found in Western Cave, Buried Relic, Wish Cave, Solar Cave and the Mystery House – and every wild Abra drops a Max Ether.
Listed as #213 in Pokopia's Pokédex, which reuses the Ultra Sun entry about Abra using its powers in its sleep.
Moves
For a Pokémon famous for knowing just one move, Abra has stayed remarkably loyal to it: from Red and Green to Legends: Z-A, Teleport at level 1 is the only thing it ever learns by levelling up. Everything else has to come from TMs, tutors and breeding. Red and Blue lent it Psychic, Thunder Wave, Reflect and Seismic Toss from the TM case, and Gold and Silver added Dream Eater, the three elemental punches and its first Egg Moves, Barrier, Encore and Light Screen, courtesy of Mr. Mime.
Since then the toolkit has grown around the edges. Egg Moves swelled to 13 in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, picking up Knock Off, Guard Swap, Power Trick, Ally Switch and Psychic Terrain, while move tutors from Emerald onwards offered everything from DynamicPunch to Trick, Zen Headbutt and Foul Play. Sword and Shield finally let Abra hatch with a Psychic-type attack, Confusion, and Legends: Arceus and Legends: Z-A trimmed things back to a tidy set of tutor and TM moves. Not bad for a Pokémon that spends most of the day asleep.
Signature moves
The vanishing act that defines Abra. It is the only move Abra learns by levelling up in every game from Red and Green to Legends: Z-A, and it doubles as TM30 in Red and Blue and TM04 in Let's Go.
Abra's big psychic blast has always been a TM away: TM29 in every main game from Red and Blue to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon and again in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, TM40 in Let's Go, TR11 in Sword and Shield, a tutor move in Legends: Arceus and TM063 in Legends: Z-A.
An apt choice for a Pokémon that spends most of the day asleep itself. Red and Blue's TM42 wouldn't work on Abra, so its first Dream Eater came from Gold and Silver's TM; it has been a TM or tutor move in nearly every game since, Legends: Z-A included.
The classic mime-wall, bred down from Mr. Mime in every generation from Gold and Silver to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. An Abra that knows it can even carry it back to Red and Blue, but it cannot be used in Sword and Shield.
A surprising set of fists for a sleepy mind-reader: TMs in Gold and Silver, Egg Moves from Ruby and Sapphire onwards, and tutor moves or TMs in many later games, from Emerald and Platinum to Let's Go, Sword and Shield, Legends: Arceus and Legends: Z-A.
Abra can't learn a single attack by levelling up, but since Sword and Shield and Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl it can hatch with Confusion, its first Psychic-type attack from breeding, passed down by Kadabra, Alakazam, Mr. Mime and other psychics.
Teleport's team-player cousin, swapping places with a partner in a flash. It is TM51 in Black and White, an Egg Move from Kadabra or Alakazam in X and Y, Sun and Moon and Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, a tutor move in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon and TR83 in Sword and Shield.
Complete learnsets
Generation I · Red, Green, Blue & Yellow1 level-up · 24 TM/HM
In Red and Blue, Abra lurks on Routes 24 and 25 just north of Cerulean City; Yellow moves it to Routes 5, 6, 7 and 8. In every version it is also a prize at the Rocket Game Corner in Celadon City, which saves chasing one that keeps teleporting away. Teleport, known from the start, is its one and only level-up move, so everything else has to come from its 24 TMs and HMs, among them Psychic (TM29), Thunder Wave, Reflect, Seismic Toss, Metronome and Flash. Teleport itself is TM30 too. In the first three generations a move's category follows its type, so Psychic and Psywave are special while Mega Punch, Counter and Seismic Toss are physical. Seven moves from Gold, Silver and Crystal can travel back through the Time Capsule: the TM moves Dream Eater, Headbutt, Fire Punch, Ice Punch and ThunderPunch, and the Egg Moves Barrier and Light Screen. Move names use the original spellings, such as ThunderPunch.

Generation II · Gold, Silver & Crystal1 level-up · 28 TM/HM · 3 egg · 1 event
Gold and Silver scatter Abra across Routes 5, 6, 8, 24 and 25 in Kanto and Routes 34 and 35 in Johto, and the Goldenrod Game Corner swaps one for 200 coins. Crystal uses Routes 5, 7, 8, 24, 34 and 35 and halves the Game Corner price to 100 coins. Teleport is still its only level-up move. Breeding arrives with three Egg Moves, all from Mr. Mime: Barrier, Encore and Light Screen (which Electabuzz can pass on too). The TM case grows to 28 entries, adding Shadow Ball, Dream Eater, DynamicPunch, Zap Cannon, Nightmare and all three elemental punches. Categories still follow type, so Shadow Ball counts as physical and Thief as special, Hidden Power's category depends on its calculated type, and Curse is the mysterious ???-type. Crystal's move tutor has nothing for Abra. Foresight came from an event Abra handed out at the Pokémon Center New York in 2002. 'Transfer' lists 18 old TM moves from Red, Blue and Yellow, from Counter and Metronome to Tri Attack, that can come forward through the Time Capsule.

Generation III · Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed & LeafGreen (tutor data also covers XD)1 level-up · 27 TM/HM · 6 egg · 21 tutor
Ruby and Sapphire put Abra in Granite Cave, Emerald adds Route 116, and FireRed and LeafGreen bring back Routes 24 and 25 and the Rocket Game Corner prize. Colosseum and XD have no Abra of their own, though XD's move tutor will teach one that is traded in. Teleport remains the only level-up move. Light Screen becomes a TM, and the Egg Moves change to six: Barrier and Encore from Mr. Mime, Fire Punch, Ice Punch and ThunderPunch from Hitmonchan, Medicham and friends, and Knock Off from Makuhita, Hariyama or Sableye. The 27 TMs and HMs bring in Calm Mind, Skill Swap, Snatch, Taunt and Shock Wave, while Dream Eater moves to the move tutors. Emerald's tutors teach 20 of Abra's 21 tutor moves, from DynamicPunch and the elemental punches to Thunder Wave; FireRed and LeafGreen teach 11 and XD nine, including Nightmare, which only XD offers. Categories still follow type, so Shadow Ball and Snore count as physical, and Knock Off and Thief as special.

Generation IV · Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold & SoulSilver1 level-up · 44 TM/HM · 8 egg · 12 tutor
Diamond, Pearl and Platinum put Abra on Routes 203 and 215, and a trader in Oreburgh City will swap one for a Machop. HeartGold and SoulSilver bring back the Kanto and Johto routes and the Goldenrod Game Corner prize, and add the Plains area of the Safari Zone; the Pokéwalker's Town Outskirts course and Pal Park's Field area offer Abra too. From this generation each move has its own physical or special category, so the elemental punches now hit physically while Shadow Ball turns special. The TM case swells to 44, with Energy Ball, Charge Beam, Drain Punch, Grass Knot, Recycle, Trick Room and a returning Dream Eater among the newcomers. Guard Swap (from Mr. Mime) and Power Trick (from Meditite or Medicham) join the Egg Moves. Diamond and Pearl have no tutor moves for Abra; Platinum's tutors teach eight, including Trick and Zen Headbutt, and HeartGold and SoulSilver add Gravity, Headbutt, Magic Coat and Role Play for 12. 'Transfer' covers ten moves that can only come from Generation III move tutors, such as Body Slam, Counter, Metronome and XD's Nightmare.

Generation V · Black, White, Black 2 & White 21 level-up · 36 TM/HM · 10 egg · 20 tutor · 2 event
White has Abra in the White Forest, while Black has none; Black 2 and White 2 have no wild Abra either, so there it has to be bred from an Alakazam. The Dream World's Spooky Manor offered Abra that could know Skill Swap or Gravity. Psyshock (TM03), Telekinesis (TM19), Round and Ally Switch (TM51) join a 36-move TM list, while Focus Punch, Iron Tail, Skill Swap and Snatch drop out of it. Guard Split (from Elgyem or Beheeyem) and Skill Swap join the Egg Moves. Black and White have no move tutors for Abra, but Black 2 and White 2's tutors teach 20 moves, from Foul Play, Gravity and Wonder Room to Iron Tail and Zen Headbutt. 'Transfer' lists 17 moves from Generations III and IV, including Captivate, Focus Punch, Secret Power and Shock Wave.

Generation VI · X, Y, Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire1 level-up · 38 TM/HM · 12 egg · 21 tutor
X and Y have Abra on Route 5 and in Psychic-type Friend Safaris, and Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire put it back in Granite Cave. Ally Switch moves from the TM case to the Egg Moves (from Kadabra or Alakazam), and Psycho Shift arrives from Spinda through chain breeding. Dazzling Gleam (TM99), Confide (TM100) and Sleep Talk (TM88) join the TMs, and Telekinesis can now only come from Generation V. Slot 94 holds Rock Smash in X and Y, which Abra cannot learn, but Secret Power in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Several moves change: Thief and Knock Off hit harder, Energy Ball rises to 90 power and Barrier drops to 20 PP. Only Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire have move tutors for Abra, 21 in all, now including Focus Punch and Shock Wave.

Generation VII · Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon1 level-up · 36 TM/HM · 13 egg · 23 tutor
Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon put Abra on Route 2 and in Hau'oli City on Melemele Island. Teleport is still its only level-up move, and the 36 TMs match Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire's list minus Flash and Secret Power; Thunder Wave is now 90% accurate and Swagger 85%. Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon add Psychic Terrain as an Egg Move from Beheeyem and run move tutors with 23 moves for Abra, Ally Switch and Telekinesis included; Sun and Moon have no tutors for it. Skill Swap now needs chain breeding from Drowzee or Elgyem. 'Transfer' lists 25 older moves that Abra can only bring in from earlier games, from Red and Blue's Bide, Rage and Skull Bash to Flash and Secret Power.

Generation VIII · Sword & Shield (incl. Expansion Pass), Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl1 level-up · 85 TM/HM · 15 egg
Sword and Shield's base game has no wild Abra: from Version 1.2.0 it can be traded in, and the Expansion Pass adds it to the Isle of Armor, in the Fields of Honor, with Max Raid Battles in the Soothing Wetlands and at Challenge Beach. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl have it on Routes 203 and 215, plus the Oreburgh City trade for a Machop. One level-up list covers all four games: just Teleport. Sword and Shield teach their machines as 28 TMs and 21 TRs (single-use Technical Records), bringing back Mega Punch and Mega Kick and adding Power Swap, Speed Swap, Psychic Terrain and Swift, and they give Abra its first attacking Psychic-type Egg Move, Confusion, along with Guard Split and Magic Coat. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl go back to a Sinnoh-style 36 TMs and 12 Egg Moves; there, Guard Split and Psycho Shift can only be passed on by an Abra, Kadabra or Alakazam that already knows them, such as one found in the Grand Underground. Neither pair has move tutors for Abra. Abra can bring 43 older moves into Sword and Shield, but 16 of them, including Barrier, Hidden Power, Return and Signal Beam, cannot be used there.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus1 level-up · 15 tutor
Abra teleports about the Obsidian Fieldlands at Windswept Run and Sandgem Flats, haunts Lake Acuity in the Alabaster Icelands, and turns up in massive mass outbreaks in both areas. Moves work differently in Hisui: each is learned at one level and mastered at a higher one, unlocking strong and agile styles. Abra learns only Teleport, at level 1, and it has no mastery level. The move tutor teaches it 15 moves, from Psychic, Shadow Ball and Calm Mind to Energy Ball, Tri Attack and the three elemental punches. There are no TMs and no breeding. Power is listed for normal, strong and agile style, and accuracy for normal and strong style.

Moves here have no accuracy or PP: each has the level at which it is learned, a level at which it becomes a Plus Move, its power and a cooldown. Teleport, learned at level 1, becomes a Plus Move at 10. The 26 TMs range from Psychic, Dream Eater and Calm Mind to Body Slam, Drain Punch and all three elemental punches. Values are as in this game, so Tri Attack hits for 40 power. There is no breeding and there are no tutors.

Abra in the anime
Debut EP022Abra and the Psychic Showdown · Its appearances on screen, and 2 other trainers who raised one.
Abra has never travelled with Ash, but it made its anime debut in style. At the Saffron Gym, Sabrina's Abra slept through the start of its battle with Pikachu, woke to teleport out of the path of Thunder Shock and then evolved into Kadabra on the spot – a showdown that ended with Ash forfeiting to protect his partner and coming back with Haunter to win the Marsh Badge.
Since then, the Psi Pokémon's habit of vanishing has powered plenty of stories: a would-be film star that teleports off the set of Pokémon in Love, Mrs. Bellows's runaway in Len Town, a sleepy peacemaker whose soundproof Safeguard settles a feud between Psychic and Ghost Pokémon, and Mira's Abra, whose Teleport finally delivers Ash, Dawn and Brock to Hearthome City. Years later, a wild Abra blinking out of sight in the forest stirs Goh's memories of the Abra that used to visit him as a child.

Evolved: EP022Abra and the Psychic Showdown
Saffron City's formidable Gym Leader shares a psychic bond with her Pokémon, and her Abra begins its Gym battle against Ash fast asleep (EP022). Woken by Pikachu's Thunder Shock, it teleports out of harm's way and reappears behind Pikachu – and then Sabrina's own psychic power makes it evolve into Kadabra in the middle of the match, which Misty confirms is perfectly within the rules. Kadabra bends Pikachu's Thunder into the shape of a dragon with Confusion and flings Pikachu about with Psychic until Ash forfeits. In the rematch, Haunter's comedy routine makes Sabrina laugh, and their link leaves Kadabra rolling on the floor in fits too, so Pikachu is declared the winner and Ash earns the Marsh Badge (EP024).
- EP022Abra and the Psychic Showdown · vs Pikachu Won

First seen: DP047Sandshrew's Locker!
Mira meets Ash, Dawn and Brock on the road to Hearthome City and offers them a shortcut: her Abra's Teleport (DP047). Its first jump lands everyone on top of a dam instead, and Mira's tale of a lost family keepsake turns out to hide her real mission – rescuing a Sandshrew she and her school friends raised, whose Poké Ball was left behind when their town was flooded for the dam. Abra whisks Mira out of one of Team Rocket's nets with Teleport, but a second net built to resist psychic moves holds it fast until Turtwig's Razor Leaf cuts it free. With Sandshrew safely home, Abra keeps Mira's promise and teleports the heroes to Hearthome City.
Ash & Abra
Ash has never caught an Abra, but one shaped his Kanto journey. At the Saffron Gym, Sabrina's Abra teleported away from Pikachu's Thunder Shock and evolved into Kadabra on the spot, and Ash forfeited to protect Pikachu (EP022). He came back with Haunter, whose clowning left Sabrina and her Kadabra helpless with laughter, so Pikachu was declared the winner and Ash took the Marsh Badge (EP024). In Sinnoh, Mira's Abra repaid his help by teleporting him, Dawn and Brock straight to Hearthome City (DP047).

Abra in the movies
featuring Abra.
Abra has not had a real part in a Pokémon film, a Pikachu short or a TV special. On the big screen it has only made fleeting cameos, which seems about right for a Pokémon that teleports away the moment anything exciting happens. Its famous screen moment belongs to the TV series instead, where Sabrina's sleepy Abra evolves into Kadabra in the middle of a Gym battle with Ash.
The closest it has come to a film role is a game. Pokémon the Movie 2000 Adventure, a browser tie-in for The Power of One, lets you pick Abra for your team and use its Teleport to score points at the obstacles along the way.

Abra in the Pokémon TCG
21 cards since 1999, oldest first. Tap any card to see it full size.
Abra was one of the very first Pokémon on a card, appearing in Japan's Expansion Pack in October 1996 and reaching English players in Base Set in January 1999. True to its Pokédex entries, its cards love an escape route: Vanish shuffles it back into your deck, Psychoflow lets it retreat for free, and modern cards hand it Teleporter and Teleportation Attack. Sabrina gave it a starring role in the Gym sets with three Ken Sugimori cards of her own Abra. Japan, meanwhile, collected extra oddities: a glossy vending-machine card, an Intro Pack Neo deck card, a McDonald's Happy Meal e-Reader card and an e-Reader demo card that was never sold.
After Mysterious Treasures in 2007, whose Abra could leap straight to Alakazam at a time when Kadabra was missing from the game, the next new Abra card came in 151 in 2023, when Mitsuhiro Arita, who had painted the original Base Set card, drew it once more. Since then Abra has been a regular again, from Kouki Saitou's Shiny Abra in Paldean Fates to Kariya's and Orca's cards, while Pokémon TCG Pocket revived Aya Kusube's 1998 vending art and set Abra and its evolutions in one eerie night-time town.

- Team Rocket 49/82 — Abra perched on top of a castle, a spot Unified Minds' Elgyem borrowed years later. Its Vanish attack makes it disappear back into your deck.
- Gym Challenge 93/132 & Wizards Promo 19 (Sabrina's Abra) — Saffron's Gym Leader got her very own Abra, and the Nintendo Power promo swapped Ken Sugimori's art for a fresh painting by Atsuko Nishida.
- Mysterious Treasures 69/123 — Ultra Evolution leaps straight from Abra to Alakazam, skipping a Kadabra that had vanished from the card game.
- 151 063/165 — Abra's comeback card, painted by Mitsuhiro Arita, the same artist behind the very first Abra in 1996.
- Paldean Fates 148/091 — Kouki Saitou's Shiny Abra, with the same card text as the 151 Abra.

Abra in manga, books & other media
From the earliest manga to story books and songs.
Abra's manga moments make the most of Teleport. In The Electric Tale of Pikachu, Sabrina's Abra beats Ash without waking up, then helps rescue its Trainer from a giant Haunter. In Pokémon Adventures, Green's Abra teleports Silver all the way home to keep him out of the final battle, though his Sneasel pinches its Flower Mail on the way out. Saturn's Abra gets a two-part chapter named after it, and a Skier's Abra twice beams Platinum out of a collision. Its Pokémon Adventures debut was a sadder affair: the Fan Club Chairman weeping over a photo of his stolen Abra, then fainting when he learns it is now an Alakazam.
Magical Pokémon Journey plays it for laughs, with a wild Abra that conjures a spider instead of a sweet potato, finds the prize in its sleep and then makes off with the whole harvest. On the bookshelf, Scholastic's Night in the Haunted Tower retells Sabrina's Abra evolving mid-battle, and the Pokémon Sinnoh Handbook got its category wrong. Away from the page, the artist Daniel Arsham has recast Abra in crystal, twice.
Manga
There's a twist in 'Buzz Off, Electabuzz!' (PS011). Once Lt. Surge's crew have been arrested and the police are handing the stolen Pokémon back, the Chairman hurries down to the docks to ask after his Abra, and learns that it has become an Alakazam. The shock makes him faint on the spot.
Then a giant Haunter known as the Black Fog drains Sabrina's soul, and Abra comes into its own. It writes 'Lavender Town' on a clipboard by telepathy to show Ash and Brock where she is, and with Sabrina working through it, it blocks the Haunter's psychic attack. When the worn-out Abra is nearly eaten, Pikachu rescues it with Agility. Together the two wear the Black Fog down in its underground lair, but when Ash throws an Ultra Ball, the Haunter Self-Destructs rather than be caught, and a newly woken Sabrina teleports Ash out of the collapsing cavern.
Abra nods off before anyone can show it a real potato, but even asleep it gets the job done, summoning the map that shows where the pink potato is buried. It still has the last laugh: once Hazel has said goodbye, it teleports back and makes off with every potato she dug up.
Silver was a step ahead, though. In 'The Last Battle VIII' (PS174) he reveals that just before he vanished, his Sneasel used Thief to snatch the Flower Mail the Abra was carrying. It held a map of the forest, and that let him follow Green to the showdown in Ilex Forest. Silver thinks back to the trick in 'Surprised by Sneasel' (PS289), remembering how Green had Abra reach into his mind to send him to the place he was born.
In part II (PS353), Abra teleports right up to Paka and Uji to go after Burmy. But once Buizel knocks the speaker down, Saturn's orders are cut off, and without a Trainer to guide them, Abra and Croagunk are easily beaten by Burmy.

Abra trivia
Name origins, design secrets and the facts that make Abra such a fan favourite.
What’s in a name?
Abra takes its name from 'abracadabra', the stage magician's classic magic word – Kadabra completes the spell, and Alakazam borrows another conjuror's incantation. Its Japanese name, Casey (ケーシィ), is thought to honour Edgar Cayce, an American who claimed psychic gifts and gave his readings from self-induced trances: a perfect fit for a Pokémon that works its powers in its sleep. The theme runs through the family in Japan, too, where Kadabra's name Yungerer points to the spoon-bender Uri Geller and Alakazam's name Foodin to the escape artist Harry Houdini. During development the English names were even more theatrical: Abra was 'Hocus' and Kadabra 'Pocus'.
Design origins
Abra blends the mystic with the animal kingdom. Its pointed ears and kite-shaped face recall a fox, an animal linked with magic in mythology, while its early sprites gave it a rat-like tail and its marathon sleeping habit hints at an opossum. The common brushtail possum may be a further influence – its scientific name refers to foxes, neatly tying the two ideas together. Its jointed, segmented body, and the way it moves in animations such as Pokémon Stadium's, also evokes a marionette: fitting for a creature of mind over matter.

- Emerald's entry reports that researchers watched Abra teleport to a new spot roughly once every hour.
- In Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, a wild Abra teleports away if you walk up to it from the front.
- Pokémon GO gives Abra a 99% flee rate – a nod to the way it teleports out of battle on its first turn in the main series.
- In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red & Blue Rescue Team, Abra talks in its sleep on your team – even its level-up line is 'Zzz… Level up… Zzz…'.
- In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX, a wild Abra always drops a Max Ether when it is defeated.
- Pokémon Conquest shows Abra floating, yet it still counts as grounded – so it can set off the Cog Wheel traps in Valora.

- In the Pokéathlon of HeartGold & SoulSilver, Abra's Power is capped at a single star, so no amount of training can raise it.
- The Machop–Abra swap works both ways: in Crystal a boy in Goldenrod City wants an Abra for his Machop, while in Diamond, Pearl and Platinum a woman in Oreburgh City trades her Abra, Kazza, for a Machop.
- In Japan the whole family is thought to be named after famous figures of the paranormal and stage magic: Abra (Casey) after Edgar Cayce, Kadabra (Yungerer) after Uri Geller and Alakazam (Foodin) after Harry Houdini.
- After Uri Geller took legal action over Kadabra in 2000, no new Kadabra card was printed between Skyridge (2003) and Pokémon Card 151 (2023), a gap widely linked to the dispute. Geller apologised and lifted his objection in 2020.
- The Electric Tale of Pikachu manga's Pokédex trims its nap time, claiming Abra sleeps 16 hours a day.
