The Diamond & Pearl era hits its blockbuster moment with Great Encounters. Released in February 2008 to line up with the theatrical run of the tenth Pokémon movie, The Rise of Darkrai, this 106-card expansion turns the film’s headline showdown into a card set — and hands players not one, not two, but four brand-new Pokémon LV.X to chase.
Where Secret Wonders had only nodded toward the movie, Great Encounters puts the legendaries front and centre. Dialga, Palkia, Darkrai and Cresselia all headline, the Eon duo Latias and Latios swoop in, and a supporting cast of Hoenn and Sinnoh Pokémon fills out three ready-to-play theme decks: Eternal Time, Infinite Space and Endless Night.
It’s a set built around a single, simple pitch: gather the legends and let them clash.
Witness Legendary Battles… Experience Great Encounters.
Dialga. Palkia. Darkrai. Who will stand victorious? In the Pokémon TCG: Diamond & Pearl—Great Encounters expansion, these three incredible legends come together to battle one another in an epic confrontation that will be a triumph for Trainers everywhere! With more brand-new Pokémon, more Pokémon LV.X, and a titanic clash of some of the most powerful Pokémon ever, Great Encounters is your chance to encounter greatness!
— official Great Encounters expansion blurb
Four Legends, Four LV.X: The Rise of Darkrai
The tenth Pokémon film pitted the space-and-time titans Dialga and Palkia against one another, with the nightmare-spinning Darkrai caught in the middle and the lunar guardian Cresselia holding the key to calm. Great Encounters gives all four their own Pokémon LV.X — and each one plays exactly to character.
Dialga LV.X (105), master of time, carries Time Skip: a Poké-Power that makes your opponent flip two coins and, on the wrong result, ends their turn before it has really begun. Its Metal Flash swings for a heavy 80.
Palkia LV.X (106) bends space with Restructure, a dizzying double-switch that drags both players’ Pokémon around the board, while Hydro Reflect scatters its Energy back across your Bench after it strikes.
Darkrai LV.X (104) is pure nightmare fuel. Its Dark Shadow Poké-Body sharpens every Darkness attacker on your side, and Endless Darkness sends the Defending Pokémon to sleep with double the coin flips needed to wake — miss both and it never does.
And Cresselia LV.X (103), the answer to Darkrai’s bad dreams, glides in with Full Moon Dance, sliding damage counters around the field at will, then snatches an extra Prize card with Moon Skip. Together the four are about as close as the TCG ever came to bottling a movie’s climax. The build-up had started one set earlier in Secret Wonders, which launched under the movie’s shadow — Great Encounters is where the legends finally step into the light.
Dialga LV.X (105/106)
The Temporal Pokémon at the top of the rarity ladder. Time Skip can rob your opponent of an entire turn on the right coin flips, and Metal Flash hits for a hefty 80.
Palkia LV.X (106/106)
Space made playable. Restructure forcibly reshuffles both benches for maximum disruption, while Hydro Reflect redistributes its Energy after dealing damage.
Darkrai LV.X (104/106)
The movie’s antagonist as a finisher. Dark Shadow powers up your Darkness attackers, and Endless Darkness can lock the Defending Pokémon in an unbreakable sleep.
Cresselia LV.X (103/106)
Darkrai’s lunar counterpart. Full Moon Dance shuffles damage counters anywhere on the field, and Moon Skip grabs a bonus Prize on a knockout.
Print Versions
Fittingly, Great Encounters shipped in four booster designs — one for each of the movie’s legendaries: Cresselia, Darkrai, Dialga and Palkia. Anyone chasing the full set of wrappers had their work cut out.

Beyond the Legends
The legendaries grab the spotlight, but a couple of other cards earn a mention.
Latios (23/106)
One half of the Eon duo, swooping in alongside Latias. Its signature Luster Purge lands a huge 120-damage blow, with the classic catch of discarding three Energy to do it.
Moonlight Stadium (100/106)
A Stadium tailor-made for the set’s stars: it drops the Retreat Cost of every Psychic and Darkness Pokémon to zero, letting the likes of Cresselia and Darkrai slip in and out of battle for free.
For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards
Great Encounters is a Lv.X-driven set whose value centers on its four legendary Lv.X – Cresselia, Darkrai, Dialga and Palkia – led by fan-favorite Darkrai. Raw copies stay affordable, but low-population PSA 10 gem-mints command four figures, and classic holo rares like Blaziken form a value tier just below.
Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)
Great Encounters’ tournament legacy rests on consistency, not attackers. It delivered Claydol – the single best card of 2008 and a near-universal draw engine – plus format-defining Trainers like Rare Candy, Premier Ball and Felicity’s Drawing that powered nearly every top-tier deck.
Darkrai Lv.X (Darkness Attacker / Sleep Lock)
Endless Darkness dealt 40 and imposed a punishing double-coin Sleep lock while its Dark Shadow body boosted Darkness-Energy attacks, anchoring Darkrai decks in the DP-on era.
Trivia
- Great Encounters was the English tie-in for the tenth Pokémon film, The Rise of Darkrai, which reached North American screens the same month the set launched.
- Its cards were drawn from Japan’s paired DP4 releases, “Moonlit Pursuit” (月光の追跡) and “Dawn Dash” (夜明けの疾走) — themed, respectively, around Cresselia and Darkrai.
- All three theme decks are named for their headline legendary: Eternal Time (Dialga), Infinite Space (Palkia) and Endless Night (Darkrai).
- Two different Darkrai appear back-to-back at numbers 3 and 4, before Darkrai LV.X caps the main set at 104.
- Latias and Latios both make the cut, giving the set a second legendary duo alongside the movie’s four.
