Synopsis
Three days before the Jubilife City Contest, Ash, Dawn and Brock arrive in the big city, and Dawn heads straight for a shop to buy a Pokétch, the wrist device every Coordinator wants. The shelves are bare: the Pokétch Company has recalled its stock. Then three clowns start handing out free Pokétches in the street, and Dawn pushes to the front of the crowd to grab one; Brock accepts one too, but Ash turns his down. The clowns are Team Rocket. Resting in a park, the friends are approached by a barking Shinx and its young Trainer Landis, who bluntly tells Dawn her Pokétch is a fake. When she argues, he dunks it in a fountain and the paint runs, adding that his father would never choose such an ugly colour, because his father happens to be president of the Pokétch Company.
At the factory, the president apologises for his son’s manners and explains that the counterfeits forced the recall. He lets the friends try a prototype app, the Friendship Checker: Ash and Pikachu score off the charts, Brock and Croagunk surprise everyone with a high reading, and Dawn and Piplup barely register. Friendship grows with time spent together, the president reassures her, though Landis doubts she should enter a Contest with a score like that. That night Team Rocket switch on the fakes, which broadcast a hypnotic Psyduck call that sends Pokémon all over the city wandering toward the trio. Pikachu senses the procession, the president and Landis go looking for their entranced Shinx, and the group track the Pokémon to a huge container, where Dawn pulls Landis clear as its door slams shut.
Team Rocket recite their motto and lift off, and their balloon’s mechanical arms trap Pikachu and Piplup in glass capsules. Buneary’s Ice Beam falls short, so Dawn and Buneary close their eyes, concentrate and fire a maximum-power Ice Beam that freezes the trio and kills the rocket boosters. As the balloon sinks the capsules open; Starly catches Piplup, but Pikachu slams into the ground. The fall breaks the hypnosis and the freed Pokémon go home to their Trainers. When Team Rocket thaw out and attack with Seviper’s Poison Tail and Carnivine’s Bite, Piplup’s Peck and Buneary’s Dizzy Punch drive them back, Shinx recharges Pikachu with Spark, and a Thunderbolt blasts the villains away. Officer Jenny and Nurse Joy arrive in time for Croagunk to poison-jab Brock, Landis grudgingly admits Dawn might do well, and next day Dawn buys a genuine Pokétch.
