01Overview

Meet Clefairy

Everything you need to know about the Fairy Pokémon — the creature behind the number.

Meet Clefairy, the Fairy Pokémon – a round, pink bundle of mischief that has been charming Trainers since the very first games. Just 60 centimetres tall, it sits in the middle of a moon-powered family: a baby Cleffa grows into Clefairy once it truly loves its Trainer, and a single Moon Stone turns Clefairy into the taller Clefable. For five generations it was a plain Normal type, until X and Y finally made its fairy name official with the brand-new Fairy type.

Its chubby body is loosely shaped like a star, from the big brown-tipped ears down to the stubby feet. A curl of fur flops over its forehead, a curly tail rises behind it and one little fang pokes out of the corner of its smile. On its back sit two tiny butterfly-shaped wings. They are far too small to fly with, but they soak up moonlight – and that stored glow lets Clefairy drift gently up into the air.

“Its adorable appearance makes it popular as a pet. However, it is rare and difficult to find.”

Pokédex · Pokémon Red (Japan), Green (Japan) & FireRed · 1996

Clefairy is famously shy. It lives tucked away in quiet mountains and rarely lets people see it, except on nights of the full moon, when groups slip out to dance together. Their gatherings are said to wrap the area in a strange magnetic field, and anyone lucky enough to watch one is supposed to be blessed with happiness. When the sun comes up, the tired dancers head home and fall asleep snuggled against one another.

That lunar habit has given Clefairy a cosmic reputation. The anime's first Clefairy were found dancing in prayer around a giant Moon Stone deep inside Mt. Moon, a later episode had a whole crew of them patching up a crashed spaceship, and in Sinnoh Team Galactic wants to snatch them precisely because they're said to have come from space. In battle, its party trick is Metronome: a wag of the finger that unleashes a completely random move, for better or worse.

Fans have adored it from day one. Clefairy was Red's cheeky first partner and comic sidekick in the Pocket Monsters manga, which began just weeks after Red and Green launched. Since then it has opened Whitney's Gym battles, partnered Lillie in Pokémon Masters EX and kicked off every Pokémon UNITE match for the healer Clefable – and the Poké Doll, the decoy that has been getting Trainers out of wild battles since 1996, is a little Clefairy doll.

Clefairy's base stats have never changed: 70 HP, 45 Attack, 48 Defense, 60 Sp. Atk, 65 Sp. Def and 35 Speed, a total of 323, with HP as its best stat and a yield of 2 HP effort values. In Generation I it had a single Special stat of 60; when Gold and Silver split Special in two, it kept 60 as Sp. Atk and gained 65 Sp. Def. Its base experience yield was 68 in Generations I–IV and has been 113 since Generation V. Base friendship was 70 in Generation II, like every Pokémon's, and has been an unusually high 140 since. It belongs to the Fast growth group, reaching level 100 at 800,000 Exp. Magic Guard was added as a second Ability in Generation IV, and Friend Guard arrived as its Hidden Ability in Generation V.

Clefairy was a pure Normal type in Generations I–V. Back then its only weakness was Fighting, it had no resistances and Ghost-type moves couldn't touch it. Becoming a Fairy type in X and Y swapped that for weaknesses to Poison and Steel, resistances to Fighting, Bug and Dark – and a complete immunity to Dragon-type moves.

Spin-offs & cameos

Super Smash Bros.

Clefairy has never been a fighter in Super Smash Bros., but it came close. In a 1999 interview, director Masahiro Sakurai revealed that Clefairy and Jigglypuff were both considered for the Kirby-style Pokémon slot in the original game; Jigglypuff won because its personality suited the hapless underdog role better. Clefairy got a consolation prize instead: it became a Poké Ball Pokémon whose Metronome borrows the move of another Poké Ball Pokémon at random – even Mew's – while its cries come straight from the anime episode 'Clefairy and the Moon Stone'. Melee kept it in the Poké Ball line-up with a reworked Metronome that fires off one of four attacks (a gusting whirlwind, a ring of fire, a towering waterfall geyser or an explosion), and gave it a trophy that notes how hard Clefairy are to find and how lively they get under a full moon. After skipping Brawl and the 3DS/Wii U games, it returned in Ultimate as Spirit #429, a Novice primary spirit whose battle sends you against a Jigglypuff on Magicant while the screen keeps flipping – a sly nod to Metronome's chaos.

Pokémon GO

Clefairy has been dancing around Pokémon GO since the game launched in 2016, and it hatched from 2 km Eggs until the baby Pokémon arrived in December 2016 and Cleffa took over. Evolving it into Clefable costs 50 Candy, and as a buddy it finds Candy every single kilometre. For years the only way to get a Shiny Clefairy was to evolve a Shiny Cleffa – until the Solstice event of 19–24 June 2020, when Shiny Clefairy began appearing in the wild. Its moves are Pound and Zen Headbutt as Fast Attacks, with Disarming Voice, Body Slam, Moonblast and – from June 2024 – Swift as Charged Attacks.

Moves

Back in Red and Green, Clefairy's toolkit was gentle and a little mysterious: eight level-up moves, from Pound and Growl to a soothing Sing at 13, with Metronome, the finger-wag that could do almost anything, at 31 and Light Screen to finish at 48. Gold and Silver brought Encore, Moonlight and a baby called Cleffa, Ruby and Sapphire leant into the space theme with Cosmic Power and the shooting-star punch Meteor Mash, and Diamond and Pearl added Gravity and the selfless Healing Wish.

The real makeover came in X and Y, when Clefairy turned Fairy-type: its Normal attacks lost their same-type bonus, and Disarming Voice and Moonblast took over. Since Sword and Shield, Cleffa's old tricks have been folded into a ten-move starting set, Scarlet and Violet stretch the TM list to 72 moves, and Legends: Z-A redraws everything again with Fairy Wind, Draining Kiss and Mystical Fire. Through it all, Metronome has stayed in the line-up of every main-series game except Legends: Arceus.

Signature moves

NormalMetronome

The finger-wagging lucky dip Clefairy is famous for: level 31 and TM35 in Red and Blue, and part of its list in every main-series game except Legends: Arceus.

NormalSing

Clefairy's lullaby: a level-13 move in Red and Blue, part of the starting set since Sword and Shield, and TM111 in Legends: Z-A.

A moonlit healing move added at level 43 in Gold and Silver. It turned Fairy-type in X and Y and now arrives as early as level 24.

SteelMeteor Mash

A Steel-type shooting-star punch that joined at level 45 in Ruby and Sapphire. It has hit for 90 rather than 100 since X and Y, and lands at 32 in Sword, Shield, Scarlet and Violet.

PsychicCosmic Power

Ruby and Sapphire's other space-themed gift (level 33), raising Defense and Special Defense at once. It is a level-40 move today, and Sword and Shield also offer it as TR44.

NormalFollow Me

The doubles-battle bodyguard trick, in the list since Ruby and Sapphire (level 17): Clefairy draws the opponents' attacks away from its partner.

FairyMoonblast

The Fairy-type finisher that came with Clefairy's new type: level 46 in X and Y, 28 in Let's Go, 44 in Sword, Shield, Scarlet and Violet, 37 in Legends: Arceus and 48 in Legends: Z-A.

Generation I · Red, Green, Blue & Yellow8 level-up · 33 TM/HM

Clefairy lives in Mt. Moon in Red, Green, Blue and Yellow, and in Red and Blue it is also a prize at the Rocket Game Corner in Celadon City (the Japanese Blue adds Cerulean Cave). The level-up list is the same in all four games: eight moves, with the famous Metronome at 31 (it is also TM35) and Light Screen to finish at 48. Clefairy is a pure Normal type in this era, so its Normal-type attacks get the same-type bonus, and every move's category is set by its type. The transfer list shows moves a Clefairy can learn in Gold, Silver or Crystal and still bring back to these games through the Time Capsule.

Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald have no wild Clefairy, so it has to be traded in, while FireRed and LeafGreen bring back Mt. Moon and the Celadon Game Corner. The level-up list grows to 13 moves with Follow Me, Cosmic Power and Meteor Mash, which closes the list at 45. The move tutors in FireRed and LeafGreen, Emerald and Pokémon XD teach 25 different moves between them, Softboiled and Mimic included. A Cleffa can still bring Charm and Sweet Kiss, plus Magical Leaf (level 17 in FireRed and LeafGreen) and Icy Wind from the Emerald and XD tutors. Categories still follow type.

Diamond, Pearl and Platinum hide Clefairy on Mt. Coronet and in the Trophy Garden; HeartGold and SoulSilver keep Mt. Moon and add the Safari Zone's Meadow and two Pokéwalker routes, Resort and Night Sky's Edge. This is the first generation in which every move has its own physical or special category. Wake-Up Slap, Lucky Chant, Gravity and Healing Wish join the level-up list, with Healing Wish now the finale at 46. The tutors in Platinum, HeartGold and SoulSilver teach 20 moves, and Aromatherapy is an Egg Move only in HeartGold and SoulSilver. A Cleffa can learn Uproar from a tutor in Platinum or HeartGold and SoulSilver. The transfer list holds move-tutor moves that can only come from the Generation III games.

Clefairy lives in the Giant Chasm in Black and White, and Black 2 and White 2 add a Hidden Grotto there. Black 2 and White 2 also reshuffle the level-up list, so there are two level columns: Bestow, Stored Power and Metronome come earlier, Body Slam joins at 40 and After You moves to the very end at 58. The move tutors, found only in Black 2 and White 2, offer 27 moves from Hyper Voice to Wonder Room. A Cleffa can learn Uproar from a Black 2/White 2 tutor, and a Cleffa from the Dream World in Black and White can arrive knowing Sleep Talk.

Generation VI · X, Y, Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire24 level-up · 48 TM/HM · 14 egg · 29 tutor

The big change: from X and Y onwards Clefairy is a pure Fairy type, so its Normal attacks lose the same-type bonus and Fairy moves gain it, with Disarming Voice from the start, Moonblast at 46 and Dazzling Gleam on TM99. Moonlight, Charm and Sweet Kiss become Fairy-type too. In X and Y Clefairy turns up in the Fairy-type Friend Safari; in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire it hides on Route 115 and in Meteor Falls (found with the DexNav) after Groudon or Kyogre has been dealt with. After You and Healing Wish can be learned at level 1 as well as at 58 and 55. TM94 is Rock Smash in X and Y but Secret Power in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, where Rock Smash becomes HM06, and the move tutors are in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire only.

Clefairy lives on Mount Hokulani in Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. One level-up list covers all four games, with Spotlight added to the starting moves. Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon add 30 tutor moves, and a Cleffa can learn Uproar from a tutor there. The transfer list grows to 35 moves that a Clefairy can only bring from older games, from Bide to Zap Cannon.

Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! · Let's Go, Pikachu! & Let's Go, Eevee!11 level-up · 33 TM/HM

Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! keep Clefairy in Mt. Moon. Its list is short and snappy: 11 level-up moves ending with Moonblast at 28 (Amnesia at 16 is a surprise), plus 33 TMs including Play Rough. There is no breeding and no move tutor. Values are as in these games, so Solar Beam hits for 200 here.

Generation VIII · Sword & Shield (incl. Expansion Pass), Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl22 level-up · 110 TM/HM · 19 egg · 3 tutor

Sword and Shield: Giant's Cap and Motostoke Riverbank in the Wild Area plus Max Raid Battles, with The Crown Tundra adding Giant's Bed, Snowslide Slope, Tunnel to the Top and Dynamax Adventures. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl return it to Mt. Coronet and the Trophy Garden. One level-up list covers both pairs: Cleffa's Charm, Sweet Kiss, Copycat and Splash are folded into a ten-move starting set, so Cleffa no longer has moves of its own to pass on, and Life Dew arrives at 16. TM, TR and Egg Move rows are tagged SwSh or BDSP. The Expansion Pass move tutor teaches Dual Wingbeat, Meteor Beam and Misty Explosion. Many older moves, such as Bestow, Lucky Chant, Wake-Up Slap and Spotlight, can come along from earlier games but cannot be used in Sword and Shield.

In Legends: Arceus, Clefairy appears in massive mass outbreaks in the Cobalt Coastlands and the Coronet Highlands, and at the Fabled Spring. Moves work differently here: each has a level at which it is learned and a higher level at which it is mastered, after which it can be used in strong or agile style, and PP totals are lower. Power is listed for normal, strong and agile style, and accuracy for normal and strong style. There are no TMs or breeding; the move tutor teaches 25 moves, and Metronome is nowhere to be seen.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A · Legends: Z-A (incl. Mega Dimension)15 level-up · 44 TM/HM

In Legends: Z-A, Clefairy lives in Jaune District's Wild Zone 19, and the Mega Dimension expansion adds it to Hyperspace Lumiose. Moves here have no PP or accuracy: each has the level at which it is learned, a level at which it becomes a Plus Move, its power and a cooldown. The level-up list is rebuilt around Fairy moves (Fairy Wind, Disarming Voice, Draining Kiss, Dazzling Gleam and Moonblast at 48), with Bubble Beam, Mystical Fire and Double-Edge at 55 for variety. Dual Wingbeat is marked as a same-type move for an evolved form, as Clefable's Mega Evolution is part Flying. Values are as in this game, so Tri Attack has 40 power and Dual Wingbeat 45. There is no breeding or tutoring.

Clefairy in the anime

Debut EP006Clefairy and the Moon Stone · Its appearances on screen, and 2 other trainers who raised one.

Clefairy's anime career began by moonlight. Deep inside Mt. Moon, a ring of Clefairy danced around the glowing Moon Stone, and a shower of Moon Stone shards turned them into Clefable, the show's first evolution by stone (EP006). Ever since, the anime has treated Clefairy as visitors from somewhere far away: a light-fingered gang crash-lands a homemade spaceship outside Viridian City in Clefairy Tales (EP062) and is back for more in Wish Upon a Star Shape (EP246), while the full-moon dance keeps returning, from Mt. Moon in A Real Cleffa-Hanger (AG134) to Professor Cerise's mountaintop in Infinite Possibilities! (JN120) and Area Delta in Pokémon Horizons.

Ash has never caught one, though he was tempted on his first night at Mt. Moon. Clefairy's best-known Trainers are Whitney, whose pampered Clefairy wandered the Goldenrod Gym with a Metronome that came out as Splash, and Lusamine, whose Clefairy was a young Lillie's playmate until it was evolved into Clefable against Lillie's wishes. Add a finger-wag that has produced Gust, Explosion, Solar Beam, Thunder Wave, Petal Blizzard and Confuse Ray, and Clefairy remains the anime's most gloriously unpredictable little star.

Other trainers’ Clefairy

Whitney's Clefairy
Whitney
Gym Leader (Goldenrod Gym, Johto)
Clefairy

First seen: EP158A Goldenrod Opportunity
Now: With Whitney in Goldenrod City

Whitney's Clefairy is the pampered pet of the Goldenrod Gym, wandering the streets so freely that Pikachu walks straight into it (EP158). Team Rocket snatch it in the Goldenrod Galleria as a present for Giovanni, but after a chase down the Magnet Train line its Metronome whips up a Gust that pulls Pikachu out of Meowth's paws, and Pikachu's Thunder sends the trio flying down the track. In the Gym battle it comes out second against Cyndaquil, wags its finger for a Splash that does nothing at all, and is withdrawn as soon as the flames start. Whitney's Miltank then flattens the rest of Ash's team and wins the day.

Personality

Clefairy is Whitney's pride and joy and is hardly ever in its Poké Ball, toddling around Goldenrod City on its own. It is sweet but no fighter, and one Flamethrower is enough to send it into a panic.

Moves usedMetronome (became Gust and Splash)

Key battles

Lusamine's Clefairy
Lusamine
President of the Aether Foundation; mother of Lillie and Gladion
Cleffa → Clefairy → Clefable

First seen: SM008Lillie's Egg-xhilarating Challenge!
Evolved: SM044A Dream Encounter!

Lusamine has raised this Pokémon since it was a Cleffa, first glimpsed in a family photo in Lillie's Egg-xhilarating Challenge! (SM008), and as a Clefairy it was the favourite playmate of a young Lillie and Gladion. A fantasy in A Dream Encounter! (SM044) shows the moment it evolved into Clefable, and Lillie is still cross with her mother for doing it; Lusamine insists that Clefairy was her Pokémon, so it was her decision. Flashbacks to those happy Clefairy days return in Mission: Total Recall! (SM049) and Rescuing the Unwilling! (SM053). As a Clefable it is drained by Nihilego (SM050), is turned against Ash and Lillie under Nihilego's control until Lillie reaches it through their shared memories (SM053), and goes on to become the Ultra Guardians' tidy-minded helper at their base (SM061).

Ash & Clefairy

Ash has never owned a Clefairy, but he came close on his very first trip through Mt. Moon, where he was ready to catch one carrying a Moon Stone shard until Seymour talked him into leaving it with its colony (EP006). His only battle against one came at the Goldenrod Gym: Whitney's Clefairy wagged its finger, got nothing but a Splash, and was called back the moment Cyndaquil's Flamethrower gave it a fright (EP158). Later still, his Phanpy made fast friends with a lost Cleffa that evolved into a Clefairy just in time to fly back to the stars with its family (EP246).

Anime trivia

  • Clefairy and the Moon Stone (EP006) features the anime's first evolution by Evolution stone: shards of the Moon Stone rain down and turn a crowd of Clefairy into Clefable.
  • Clefairy's voice in Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Melee comes straight from the anime. The Japanese versions use lines from Clefairy and the Moon Stone, while the English versions use its Who's That Pokémon? call.
  • When the space Clefairy first appear in Clefairy Tales (EP062), one of them even gatecrashes Team Rocket's motto, piping up with its own name at the end in place of Meowth.
  • Lights, Camerupt, Action! (AG086) pulls off a unique crossover: Red and his Clefairy from Kosaku Anakubo's Pocket Monsters manga star in The Gluttonous Visitor, Clefairy, one of Ash's favourite films, whose title spoofs the Japanese title of Destiny Deoxys. It is the only time characters from a manga series have appeared in the anime.
  • Clefairy skipped the Best Wishes and XY eras entirely: after a cameo in Beating the Bustle and Hustle! (DP135), it did not return until Lusamine's Clefairy appeared in A Dream Encounter! (SM044).
  • In Lulled to La-La Land! (SM029), the English dub called Lillie's Poké Doll a 'Clefairy Doll', a literal translation of its Japanese name, Pippi Doll. The slip was later corrected.
  • The Russian dub of the original series called Clefairy 'Aria', the species' early English prototype name, and the Polish dub of Clefairy and the Moon Stone (EP006) switches between 'Aria' and Clefairy.

“Clefairy. This impish Pokémon is friendly and peaceful. It is believed to live inside Mt. Moon, although very few have ever been seen by humans.”

Clefairy in the movies

2 films, 2 Pikachu shorts featuring Clefairy.

Clefairy has never had a film of its own, but it has a habit of wandering into shot. Its cinema debut came in 1998 in Pikachu's Vacation, the short shown with Mewtwo Strikes Back, and it even made the English poster for the main feature without appearing in the film itself.

Its best big-screen moment came a year later in Pikachu's Rescue Adventure, when a Clefairy's Metronome turns into Explosion and blasts Pikachu and friends out of a cave. In the features it has stayed a background player: a group of Clefairy sense that nature has been thrown off balance in The Power of One, and the whole family – Cleffa, Clefairy and Clefable – turns up among the Trainers' Pokémon at Fula City's Wind Festival in The Power of Us.

A Clefable is there too, although an animation slip makes it look far too small in the background of Squirtle and Marill's race.
  • PK04Pikachu's Rescue Adventure (1999) · Wild Clefairy
After a show put on by some Bellossom, Pikachu and friends meet a group of wild Clefairy, and one of them tries Metronome. It turns into Explosion, which blows a hole in the cave and sends the whole gang flying. Classic Clefairy.

Clefairy in the Pokémon TCG

51 cards since 1999, oldest first. Tap any card to see it full size.

Clefairy's first decade of cards is the story of a holo star who happily settled down as a dependable common. It arrived in 1999 as one of Base Set's sixteen holofoils, Ken Sugimori's 40 HP charmer that could Sing a rival to sleep or waggle a finger with Metronome and borrow the Defending Pokémon's own attack, before the Gym sets put it in Erika's care with moon-flavoured moves like Moonwatching and Lunar Power. Neo Genesis had it leading a Squaredance, Expedition squeezed e-Reader data on to its card, and from the EX era onwards artists such as Mitsuhiro Arita, Midori Harada, Lee HyunJung and Masakazu Fukuda took turns, with designers slipping in nods to the games: a Moon Impact that hits harder if it grew up from Cleffa, a Clefairy carrying its own Moon Stone, and a HeartGold & SoulSilver print set against Goldenrod City's Radio Tower. All the way through it stayed resolutely Colorless; its Fairy makeover was still years away.

Since 2011 Clefairy has been the TCG's dependable little character actor, turning up in almost every era with a new trick, and changing type twice along the way: Colorless up to Plasma Storm, a Fairy type from 2014 (Japan's first came as a promo with the Xerneas Half Deck) and Psychic from Rebel Clash in 2020, once the Fairy type was retired. Most of its cards are commons, but what commons: Moonlight, Moon Dance and Moon Kick, a Moon-Watching Party that powers up a whole Bench of Clefairy, copycat Metronome attacks, and Cosmic Eclipse's Doll Swap, which ducks out behind Lillie's Poké Doll. Evolutions brought back Ken Sugimori's Base Set art for the 20th anniversary, and in 2025 Lillie's Clefairy ex finally gave it a headline card, with a Fairy Zone that helped win a World Championship. The art has grown more ambitious too, from Goldenrod City and Loyalty Plaza backdrops to Special Illustration Rares of Lillie and Clefairy and Perfect Order's Illustration Rare, which joins up with Mega Clefable ex's to make one picture, while TCG Pocket has revived favourite artworks from Neo Genesis, Generations, Hidden Fates and Rebel Clash and added a Shiny Clefairy.

Cards to know

  • Base Set 5/102 — One of the sixteen original holos, and its Metronome could copy whatever attack the opposing Pokémon had, giving a 40 HP fairy a giant's punch.
  • Gym Heroes 25/132 — Erika's Clefairy goes Moonwatching, an attack that fetches a basic Energy from your deck, so even its moves are about the moon.
  • Secret Wonders 83/132 — This Clefairy brings its own Moon Stone, a Held Item that lets it evolve on the very turn it hits the table.
  • Evolutions 63/108 — Ken Sugimori's 1999 Base Set Clefairy returned as a Rare Holo for the 20th anniversary, Metronome and all, only now it was a Fairy type.
  • Journey Together 056/159 (Lillie's Clefairy ex) — Clefairy's first ever Pokémon ex. Its Fairy Zone makes Dragon Pokémon weak to Psychic, and one copy helped the Gardevoir deck that won the 2025 Masters World Championship.
  • Perfect Order 094/088 — Cona Nitanda's Illustration Rare joins up with the Mega Clefable ex Special Illustration Rare from the same set to make one larger picture.

Clefairy in manga, books & other media

From the earliest manga to story books and songs.

Clefairy was a manga star before Pikachu ever had a TV show. Kosaku Anakubo's Pocket Monsters launched in March 1996, less than three weeks after Red and Green, with a crude, cowardly, coconut-dropping Clefairy as Red's partner, and it has been causing chaos (and wrecking Professor Oak's lab) ever since.

Elsewhere in manga, The Electric Tale of Pikachu takes Ash to a full-moon Clefairy ceremony and a Clefairy UFO mystery, Pokémon Adventures evolves Green's Clefy into a Metronome-slinging Clefable mid-battle, and Magical Pokémon Journey gives Hazel a shy little Clefairy with a surprise Mega Punch. On the bookshelf it is the forest's timekeeper in the picture book Where's Clefairy's Voice?. It also gets a name-check in the Pokérap, turns up in MELLOMELLOID, Hatsune Miku's Fairy-type song, and in 2024 starred in a gentle, moonlit Pokémon Sleep short of its own.

Manga

Red's Clefairy, the star of Pokémon Pocket Monsters (PM001)
Pokémon Pocket MonstersRed (Blockhead Clefairy) · PM001 'Introducing the Pokémon Clefairy!!' / volume 1 · 1996Kosaku Anakubo's slapstick comedy began in CoroCoro Special in March 1996, less than three weeks after Red and Green came out, and Clefairy is its star. In the first chapter it saves Red from a gang of Nidoran♂ by dropping coconuts on them, charms its way into Professor Oak's lab, becomes Red's partner and then, with its tail set alight by Green's Charmander, accidentally sets the lab on fire. Lazy, loud, crude and cowardly, 'Blockhead Clefairy' would rather win with tricks, disguises and Metronome than fight fair; it first evolves into Clefable in PM023 (though it later changes back) and has followed Red from Kanto to Hoenn, Sinnoh and beyond. Red, Clefairy and Pikachu even appear in the anime, in an old film Ash and Gary watched as kids in Lights, Camerupt, Action!, making them the only manga characters ever to be animated.
The Clefairy Rangers, Red's Clefairy's backup squad (PM070)
Pokémon Pocket MonstersThe Clefairy Rangers (led by Red's Clefairy) · PM070 'The Gym Challenges Begin!!'When Red's Clefairy meets something it can't beat, it calls in the Clefairy Rangers (the Pippi Rangers in Japanese), a squad of Clefairy who, unlike their leader, take the job seriously. They debut using Flash to defeat a giant Bellsprout, and in PM071, 'Clefairy Rangers to the Rescue!!', Professor Oak sends them after a Lugia with a boat, a plane, a bazooka and finally a robot suit that lets them catch it. Red's Clefairy then eats so much that it wrecks their hideout. The squad returns in the Ruby-Sapphire and Black & White sequels.
The Electric Tale of Pikachu ET03, 'Clefairy Tale' (1997)
The Electric Tale of PikachuWild (the Mt. Moon colony) · ET03 'Clefairy Tale' / volume 1 · 1997Toshihiro Ono's take on Clefairy and the Moon Stone. After weeks of searching Mt. Moon, Ash follows a Clefairy wearing a necklace into an Onix nest, and when the cave collapses the same Clefairy digs him out with Metronome. He joins Professor Oak and Bill, who discovered the colony, at a full-moon ceremony where Clefairy dance around a decorated rock to the beat of drums, and Ash gets to touch a Moon Stone to his rescuer and evolve it into Clefable himself.
The Electric Tale of Pikachu ET10, 'Clefairy in Space' (1998)
The Electric Tale of PikachuWild (the Apple City herd) · ET10 'Clefairy in Space' / volume 3 · 1998UFO sightings in Apple City have a TV professor claiming that Clefairy come from outer space, a theory Professor Oak isn't buying. The truth is stranger: a herd of Clefairy living under the city has been using psychic powers to pinch food, and the 'UFO' belongs to Jessie and James, who want to sell a Clefairy on the black market. The Clefairy befriend a lonely girl called Mimi, one of them turns Metronome on Team Rocket, and by the time everyone wakes from Jigglypuff's Sing, the herd has quietly moved on. The chapter is partly based on the anime episode Clefairy Tales.
Clefy, Green's Clefairy in Pokémon Adventures (PS032)
Pokémon AdventuresGreen (Clefy) · PS032 'A Little Kadabra'll Do It' / volume 3 (evolves in PS033) · 1998Green's Clefairy, Clefy, is hardly used at first, only once as a distraction against Sabrina. Then, in the battle with Thu-Fi-Zer, the fused legendary birds, in PS033 'The Winged Legends', Red holds a Moon Stone up to the moonlight and Clefy evolves into Clefable. Its Metronome, stronger after evolving, rains a barrage of random attacks on the fusion.
Pokémon Adventures PS389, 'Cautious Clefairy' (2010)
Pokémon AdventuresRad Rickshaw (Cliff and Cliffette) · PS389 'Cautious Clefairy' / volume 35 · 2010Two Clefairy silhouetted against the full moon ambush Pearl, shrug off Discharge and Chatter, then rise towards the moon to use Lucky Chant. They are Cliff and Cliffette, only protecting their Trainer Rad Rickshaw, the Eterna City bike-shop owner Team Galactic had kidnapped. The villains wanted his Clefairy for something to do with the moon and stars.
Pokémon AdventuresDaisy Oak · PS262 'It All Ends Now III'Professor Oak's granddaughter Daisy turns out to have raised a Clefairy for Pokémon Contests when she was younger. A whole group of Clefairy also turns up at the Autumn Choir Tournament in PS534.
Hazel's shy Clefairy in Magical Pokémon Journey (PPP02)
Magical Pokémon JourneyHazel · PPP02 'Clefairy Comes Through' / volume 1 · 1998Yumi Tsukirino's sweet and silly series gives Hazel a timid, shy Clefairy that jumps at everything, even a falling Metapod. Clefairy trivia

Name origins, design secrets and the facts that make Clefairy such a fan favourite.

What’s in a name?

'Clefairy' joins 'clef', the symbol that opens a line of written music, with 'fairy' – a musical touch that suits a Pokémon famous for Sing, Metronome and moonlit dancing. Its Japanese name, ピッピ (Pippi), may come from doubling the first syllable of 'pixie', giving it a bouncy, playground sound. The French went musical too: Mélofée blends mélodie (melody) or mélopée (a chant) with fée (fairy). During the development of Red and Green its English name was planned as 'Aria' – another musical word – and the Russian dub of the original anime series used it.

Design origins

Clefairy is a Ken Sugimori design, and one of the oldest ideas in the whole series: an early version of it already appeared in Capsule Monsters, the original pitch to Nintendo that grew into Pokémon. At heart it is a storybook fairy or pixie – small, playful, magical and fitted with a pair of tiny wings. Its star-shaped silhouette and the long-running hints that it fell to Earth from space suggest a dash of friendly alien, too. Those big ears, its moon-fuelled powers and its evolution by Moon Stone may also nod to the Moon rabbit, the hare that East Asian folklore sees on the face of the full moon.
