Synopsis

On a family camping trip with her father, Chloe watches a moonlit Clefairy evolution ritual and learns that Professor Cerise once befriended one of those Clefairy as a boy, helping her see that every Pokémon has its own path. At the Eevee Evolution Lab, Pinery gives Chloe and Eevee a clean bill of health, and Chloe recounts her recent adventures, from her first Pokémon Contest to meeting Lana’s Eevee, Sandy, which showed her that Eevee can stay unevolved. Pinery notes that Eevee has now met every one of its evolved forms but still cannot choose. Over dinner, Chloe asks her father why Pokémon evolve, and Professor Cerise suggests that, taken far enough, every Pokémon may have its own way of evolving, just as every person is an individual. Seeing her still unsure, he proposes a family camping weekend. Chloe and her father set off first, while her mother Talia, her brother Parker and a disappointed Yamper will follow after Parker’s soccer club.

On the way, the Professor stops at a forest full of wild Pokémon, and Chloe suggests bringing Ash and Goh there once the Masters Eight and Project Mew are over. Following a Poliwag to a pond, Eevee sneezes, gives them away and tumbles into the water, and an old man named Grover fishes it out with his net as the Poliwag evolves into Poliwhirl. Grover, the forest’s caretaker, looked after Cerise as a boy and still helps with his research. At Grover’s house, Chloe learns that people planted the trees that grew into this forest, which has expanded over the years along with its Pokémon. Grover recalls the time young Cerise rescued an injured Clefairy from a Beedrill; Grover bandaged its leg, and Cerise visited it every day, walking with it once it recovered and having his hair frizzed when its Metronome became Thunder Wave. When it returned to the wild, its farewell Metronome created a beautiful Petal Blizzard.

At the campsite the family reunites, eats and plays, and under the full moon Eevee and Yamper hear distant calls. The Professor leads everyone up the mountain to a clearing where Clefairy are dancing around a cluster of Moon Stones in an Evolution ritual, led by a Clefable. A swarm of Golbat swoops in to disrupt it, and when Clefable’s Psychic cannot stop them all, Eevee copies the move with Copycat, and together they drive the Golbat away. Every Clefairy evolves into Clefable, and the Pokémon leap towards the moon and seem to vanish into it; the first Clefable uses Metronome, the family wags their fingers along, and a Petal Blizzard fills the sky before it too disappears. Chloe wonders whether it was her father’s childhood friend, and he is sure it was. Too excited to sleep, Chloe says she wants to learn more about evolution, and her father tells her to walk alongside her Pokémon and listen to its feelings at every crossroads.
