EX Unseen Forces is the tenth expansion of the EX Series, released on August 22nd, 2005 and known in Japan as Golden Sky, Silvery Ocean. A big, generous set of 145 cards, it heads back to Johto and the world of Gold, Silver and Crystal — and it carries one of the most charming gimmicks the card game has ever printed.
Johto’s legends are out in force. The tower duo Ho-Oh ex and Lugia ex headline a deep run of Pokémon-ex, joined by the Johto starters, Tyranitar ex and the Eeveelutions Espeon ex and Umbreon ex. Better still, the three legendary beasts return as Gold Stars — shiny Entei, Raikou and Suicune close out the set as its glittering chase cards.
But the feature everyone remembers is the complete Unown alphabet: all twenty-eight Unown, A through Z plus the ! and ? forms, each printed as its own collectible card. It’s a full-set-within-a-set that turned completing EX Unseen Forces into a genuine spelling bee — more on that below.
Two theme decks shipped alongside it, Golden Sky (Fire/Fighting) and Silvery Ocean (Grass/Psychic), their names lifted straight from the Japanese title. Fittingly for a set called Unseen Forces, its best trick was hidden in plain sight, one letter at a time.
Between the known and unknown, there are unseen forces!
Return to Johto and command Ho-Oh, Lugia and the legendary beasts — and unlock the hidden power of the Unown.
— Original Pokémon USA promotional copy, 2005
The Complete Unown Alphabet

Unown are the little hieroglyph Pokémon shaped like letters, first found in the Ruins of Alph in Gold and Silver — and EX Unseen Forces did something no set had done before: it printed the entire alphabet. All twenty-six letters, A to Z, plus the two punctuation Unown, ! and ?, appear as their own individual cards, each numbered out of its own 28-card run. Assembling the whole set became a beloved side-quest, a spelling bee in cardboard form.
Crucially, they weren’t just for show. Each Unown carries a letter-themed Poké-Power, and many are built to work with one another — the Unown [R], for instance, can search your deck for a different Unown and swap itself out, letting you chain from one letter to the next. The design openly invited players to collect the alphabet and “spell out” combinations on the table, so the gimmick paid off in play as well as on the shelf.
It fit the set’s theme perfectly. Unseen Forces is all about hidden power — the legendary beasts stalking Johto, the tower birds overhead — and the Unown are the ultimate hidden message, a secret language tucked inside a booster box. Two decades on, a complete, framed Unown alphabet from this set remains one of the most satisfying displays in all of vintage Pokémon.
Print Versions & Collectors Info
Boosters came in four artwork variants — Umbreon, Raikou, Steelix and Typhlosion — each holding nine cards. Two theme decks, Golden Sky and Silvery Ocean, rounded out the release. At 145 cards including the full Unown run, it is one of the larger EX-era sets to complete.

Other Cards
Two secret rares hide past the end of the numbered set — one of them a cheeky Team Rocket cameo.
Rocket’s Persian ex (116/115)
A secret rare that keeps the Team Rocket flavour alive straight after EX Team Rocket Returns — the scratch-cat as a Dark-themed ex, tucked just beyond the checklist.
Celebi ex (117/115)
The Johto mythical closes the set as a secret rare — a fan-favourite time-traveller and a fitting final card for a trip back to Gold and Silver.
For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards
The chase splits three ways: the shiny legendary-beast Gold Stars, the Johto tower duo, and the fan-favourite Eeveelutions — not to mention the 28-card Unown alphabet.
Suicune Star (115/115)
A Gold Star of the northern beast and the pick of a stunning trio — shiny, scarce, and one of the set’s signature pulls.
Entei Star (113/115)
The volcano beast in Gold Star form — a fiery, coveted chase card that collectors love to line up with its siblings.
Raikou Star (114/115)
The thunder beast completes the Gold Star trio — three shiny legends that crown the set.
Ho-Oh ex (104/115)
The rainbow phoenix of Johto as an ex, its Golden Wing power salvaging Energy as it falls — a marquee legendary.
Lugia ex (105/115)
The silver guardian of the sea, Ho-Oh’s counterpart, and one of the most iconic ex in the set.
Espeon ex (102/115)
The sun Eeveelution as an ex, with a nasty de-evolution power — hugely popular with Eevee collectors.
Umbreon ex (112/115)
The moon Eeveelution and Espeon’s eternal pair — a gorgeous Dark ex and a perennial fan favourite.
Tyranitar ex (111/115)
The pseudo-legendary armour Pokémon as a disruptive ex — a heavy hitter and a staple of any Johto collection.
Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)
Unseen Forces was full of control tools — de-evolution, energy theft and Stadium-smashing disruption.
Espeon ex (102/115)
Its Devo Flash power strips the top Evolution off an opponent’s Benched Pokémon as you play it — a devastating tempo swing against Evolution decks.
Tyranitar ex (111/115)
A toolbox of disruption: smash Stadiums, strip Special Energy, or make your opponent discard — it could pick apart a setup one attack at a time.
Lugia ex (105/115)
Its Silver Sparkle body punishes attackers by stealing an Energy when it’s hit — even as it’s knocked out — taxing every trade your opponent makes.
Ho-Oh ex (104/115)
Golden Wing rescues up to two Energy onto your other Pokémon when Ho-Oh ex falls, softening a knockout and keeping your board fuelled.
Trivia
- The set famously contains the complete Unown alphabet — all 26 letters A–Z plus the ! and ? forms — as 28 individual collectible cards, a full set-within-a-set.
- Each Unown carries a letter-themed Poké-Power, and several are built to work in combination, so assembling the alphabet paid off in play as well as on the shelf.
- The legendary beasts Entei, Raikou and Suicune appear as Gold Star cards — the set’s glittering chase trio.
- Johto’s tower legends Ho-Oh ex and Lugia ex both feature, as the set draws on Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal.
- At 145 cards, it is one of the larger EX-era sets, and its Japanese title translates to Golden Sky, Silvery Ocean — the source of the Golden Sky and Silvery Ocean theme decks.
- A secret-rare Rocket’s Persian ex keeps the Team Rocket theme rolling straight after EX Team Rocket Returns, alongside a secret Celebi ex.
