Filler / stand-alone episodeFaba’s shrink ray
Dummy, You Shrunk the Kids! is the 39th episode of Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon – Ultra Adventures, the twenty-first season of the Pokémon anime, and the 1017th episode of the English dub overall (Japanese episode 1023, Bulbapedia code SM083). It first aired in Japan on 26 July 2018 and in the United States on 15 December 2018. It falls within the season’s Ultra Beasts & everyday Alola stretch (EP78–EP86).
Synopsis
A malfunctioning shrink ray built by guest teacher Faba reduces Ash, Lillie and Sophocles to the size of insects, and they must cross Hau’oli City to get back to their friends. Sent by Lusamine to teach science, Faba explains how Poké Balls shrink Pokémon and unveils a gadget based on the same principle. His first demonstrations fizzle, but after a reboot the machine goes haywire, and its ricocheting beam strikes Ash, Lillie and Sophocles, who are hiding under the same desk. Pikachu finds them an inch tall. While Faba panics about Lusamine’s reaction and has Rotom help repair the device, Togedemaru bounces around with Sophocles aboard, smashes the ray and collides with Pikachu, and the blast sends the tiny children and their Pokémon into the pond outside and down a drain. Kiawe, Mallow and Lana set out on their Ride Pokémon to search.
Riding Togedemaru down a river, the three are washed ashore by a wading Mudsdale and scare off a curious Alolan Rattata thanks to Togedemaru’s spikes. Lillie decides to enjoy being small, while Sophocles is horrified. Togedemaru’s sparks join a group of Dedenne communicating through their whiskers, a signal that Pikachu and Snowy pick up and follow. Ash and Lillie float over Hau’oli City clinging to a Comfey, with Sophocles following on Togedemaru, while an Alolan Persian eyes them hungrily. A Murkrow knocks them off the Comfey, they bounce across market canopies into Anela’s fruit stall, and an avalanche of oranges knocks out Togedemaru, which rolls into the street—where the Persian, the same one that once bullied Litten, pushes it towards the fleeing children.
Cornered in an alley, Ash grabs a stick to fight, but Mallow’s Tsareena strikes the Persian from behind with Magical Leaf and beats it with powerful kicks, a Trop Kick and a stomp, then shaves the fur off its back until it runs away in tears; Mallow notes that Tsareena has become more mature. Togedemaru rolls in, almost flattening Sophocles, and Pikachu, Snowy, Kiawe and Lana arrive soon after. When Ash pets Pikachu’s nose, Pikachu sneezes, blowing the three into the air, where they glow and return to normal size, while the Persian’s owner is horrified by her shaven Pokémon. Back at school, only Sophocles did not enjoy the adventure. Faba apologises and demonstrates the repaired machine on a chair, but it misfires again and hits Togedemaru, which grows until it bursts out through the side of the school.
