If you had to pick one Diamond & Pearl set that truly lives up to its name, Legends Awakened is it. Released in August 2008, this 146-card behemoth was the largest expansion the era had produced — and it stuffed its roster with just about every Legendary Pokémon the games could offer.
The Sinnoh lake guardians Uxie, Mesprit and Azelf; the ancient golems Regirock, Regice and Registeel plus their master Regigigas; the weather titans Kyogre and Groudon; Rayquaza, Giratina, Mewtwo and all four Deoxys Formes — they are all here, and seven of them awaken as Pokémon LV.X, more than any set before it. Two theme decks, Metal Surge and Bombardment, gave players a foothold in the chaos.
There’s a lot going on — so let’s start with the little blue Pokémon that quietly ran the entire format.
Deep in the Far Reaches, Legends Awaken
Become a legend in your own time when you play the Pokémon TCG: Diamond & Pearl—Legends Awakened expansion! Powerful Legendary Pokémon like Regigigas and Heatran, more amazing Pokémon LV.X than ever before, and a host of other game-changing Pokémon will make your battles even more epic. And with new Trainer and Supporter cards, you will awaken the legend within yourself. The legends are rising to the challenge—will you rise with them?
— official Legends Awakened expansion blurb
The Little Legend That Ran the Format: Uxie
For all the giant Legendaries on the box, the most important card in Legends Awakened is a knee-high Psychic-type with a modest 70 HP. Uxie (43) carries the Set Up Poké-Power: the instant you play it from your hand to your Bench, you draw until you’re holding seven cards. Just like that, a single Basic Pokémon became the best draw engine in the game.
The genius was in the recycling. Uxie’s Psychic Restore attack tucks it back onto the bottom of your deck, so you could draw it again later and Set Up all over. For years afterward, decks of every type — Fire, Water, Dark, it didn’t matter — ran a line of Uxie purely to keep their hands full. Few cards have ever been so universally played.
Uxie LV.X (146) then sat at the very top of the set as its final card, adding the Trade Off Poké-Power to dig two cards deeper every turn — a luxury topper for a card that was already an auto-include.
Uxie (43/146)
The most-played card of its era hiding in plain sight. Set Up draws you up to a fresh seven-card hand the moment it hits the Bench, and Psychic Restore recycles it to the bottom of your deck to do it all again.
Uxie LV.X (146/146)
The set’s final card and its crown. Trade Off digs two cards deep every turn, turning an already essential draw engine into a genuine luxury.
The Lake Trio and a Format-Warping Mewtwo
Legends Awakened’s headline promise was “more amazing Pokémon LV.X than ever before,” and it delivered seven of them. The Sinnoh lake trio arrived as a matched set — and the designers deliberately built them to be played together.
Azelf LV.X (140) strips Weakness from all of your Psychic Pokémon with its Psychic Aura Poké-Body, while Mesprit LV.X (143) hides a monster: its Supreme Blast swings for a colossal 200 damage — but only if you have both Uxie LV.X and Azelf LV.X in play at the same time. Assemble all three lake guardians in their LV.X forms and you unlock one of the biggest single attacks in the whole format.
The scariest of the seven, though, was Mewtwo LV.X (144). Its Psybarrier Poké-Body made it completely immune to any Pokémon that wasn’t an Evolution — and in a metagame swimming with powerful Basic attackers, that meant entire decks simply couldn’t touch it. Giga Burn then answered back for 120.
Azelf LV.X (140/146)
The knowledge guardian. Its Psychic Aura Poké-Body removes Weakness from every Psychic Pokémon you have, and Deep Balance punishes an opponent for loading up on Energy.
Mesprit LV.X (143/146)
The emotion guardian, and the trio’s finisher. Supreme Blast deals a massive 200 damage — but only with Uxie LV.X and Azelf LV.X on the field beside it.
Mewtwo LV.X (144/146)
The format-warper. Psybarrier made it untouchable by any non-Evolved Pokémon, walling out a metagame full of Basic attackers, while Giga Burn hit back for 120.
Print Versions
Legends Awakened shipped in four booster designs, fronted by Giratina, Lucario, Luxray and Rhyperior — a spread of the set’s biggest hitters. Whichever wrapper you grabbed, the pack inside had a shot at all seven of those LV.X.

Beyond the Legends
With 146 cards to dig through, plenty more rewards a second look.
Kingdra (7/146)
A slippery Water attacker. Aqua Stream recycles Water Energy straight out of your discard pile for 10 damage apiece, while Dragon Pump trades cards from your hand for a heavier hit plus Bench damage.
Cynthia’s Feelings (131/146)
A signature Supporter of the era. It shuffles your hand away and draws four — and if any of your Pokémon were Knocked Out last turn, you draw four more, turning a bad trade into a fresh grip of eight.
For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards
Legends Awakened (DP6, August 2008) is defined by its seven Lv.X chase cards, which cap the 146-card set and are notoriously hard to pull in clean condition. High-grade PSA 10 copies routinely command four to five figures, and Mewtwo Lv.X stands as the set’s undisputed crown jewel.
Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)
Legends Awakened reshaped the 2008-2009 Modified metagame more through its Basic support Pokemon than its attackers. The Lake Trio (Uxie, Mesprit, Azelf) became near-universal staples for years, while Kingdra headlined one of the format’s premier archetypes.
Mewtwo Lv.X (Anti-SP tech)
Its Psybarrier Poke-Body blocks all damage and effects from non-evolved attackers, hard-walling the Basic-heavy SP decks (Luxray GL, Garchomp C) that dominated 2009-2010.
Trivia
- At 146 cards, Legends Awakened was the largest single expansion of the Diamond & Pearl era.
- Its seven Pokémon LV.X were the most in any set to that point — the box literally advertised “more amazing Pokémon LV.X than ever before.”
- The full Sinnoh lake trio (Uxie, Mesprit and Azelf) appears both as regular cards and as LV.X, with Mesprit LV.X’s 200-damage attack requiring the other two LV.X on the field.
- All four Deoxys Formes — Normal, Attack, Defense and Speed — are included, a callback to their debut in EX Deoxys.
- The set combined two Japanese expansions, “Cry from the Mysterious” (秘境の叫び) and “Temple of Anger,” into one giant English release.
