EX Delta Species is the eleventh expansion of the EX Series, released on October 31st, 2005 and known in Japan as Holon Research Tower. It is one of the boldest creative swings the card game ever took: a 114-card set built around a brand-new idea — δ Delta Species Pokémon, familiar creatures reborn with completely unexpected types.
The set’s tagline said it plainly: “Behold the newest species of Pokémon!” Almost the entire roster wears the little δ symbol, from Rayquaza and Dragonite to Metagross and Tyranitar — each one recoloured into a type it has no business being. It also debuted a second clever wrinkle, Holon’s Pokémon, cards that can be played as either a Pokémon or an Energy.
The chase cards keep pace with the ambition. Three Gold Stars — Groudon Star, Kyogre Star and Metagross Star — headline, backed by an Eeveelution trio of Flareon ex, Jolteon ex and Vaporeon ex and a secret-rare Azumarill.
Two theme decks shipped alongside it, Breakthrough (Grass/Lightning/Metal) and Steeplechase (Fire/Metal). It was such a distinctive concept that Pokémon named a whole mini-era after it — but the fun of the set is right there on the cards, so let’s take a closer look.
Behold the newest species of Pokémon!
Discover δ Delta Species Pokémon — familiar friends transformed into brand-new types by the experiments of Holon.
— Original Pokémon USA promotional copy, 2005
δ Delta Species: Pokémon With the Wrong Types
Here’s the big idea. In the games’ Hoenn region sat a mysterious place called Holon, where experiments with electromagnetic energy had strange side-effects on the local Pokémon — changing their very types. EX Delta Species turned that premise into a whole set: dozens of ordinary Pokémon, each marked with a small δ symbol, showing up as a type they were never meant to be.
And it committed to the bit. This set gives you a Lightning-type Rayquaza, a Fire-type Tyranitar, and Lightning-type versions of Dragonite and Metagross — Dragon and Steel Pokémon suddenly crackling with electricity. Half the delight of opening a pack was seeing which beloved Pokémon had been scrambled into something new, and deck-builders loved it too: a Delta Species Pokémon could slot into a colour it had no natural business supporting.
The cards even looked different, with “δ Delta Species” printed under the name, twisting double-helix patterns framing the artwork, and a shimmering “refractor” holofoil. On top of all that came Holon’s Pokémon — cards like Holon’s Electrode that count as a Pokémon or an Energy depending on how you play them — a genuine first that gave decks a flexible new building block. Familiar, yet completely alien: that contradiction is exactly what makes Delta Species one of the most fondly remembered experiments in the game’s history.
Print Versions & Collectors Info
Boosters came in four artwork variants — Flareon, Dragonite, Metagross and Salamence — each holding nine cards and showing off the set’s Delta Species stars. Two theme decks, Breakthrough and Steeplechase, rounded out the release.

Other Cards
Two of the set’s cleverest cards aren’t ex — they’re the building blocks of the Holon storyline that runs through it.
Holon’s Electrode (21/113)
A genuine first: a card you can play as a Pokémon or as an Energy. Drop it as an Energy for a quick boost, or bench it as a Pokémon — that flexibility gave Delta Species decks a whole new toolkit.
Holon Research Tower (94/113)
The Stadium at the heart of the set’s lore — the very lab whose experiments created the Delta Species. It tweaks how basic Energy behaves for both players, tying the storyline right into the gameplay.
For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards
The chase is a trio of Gold Stars, the ever-popular Eeveelution ex, and the set’s standout Delta Species headliners.
Metagross Star (113/113)
A Gold Star of the steel behemoth and one of the set’s glittering prizes — the pick of a stunning three-card run.
Groudon Star (111/113)
The continent Pokémon as a Gold Star, with an Energy-loading attack — a marquee shiny chase card.
Kyogre Star (112/113)
Groudon’s eternal rival as a Gold Star — collected as a pair and just as scarce.
Flareon ex (108/113)
The fire Eeveelution as an ex, with an on-evolve Burn-and-Confuse power — a fan favourite that anchors the set’s ex line.
Jolteon ex (109/113)
The thunder Eeveelution, spreading damage the moment it evolves — a popular and playable ex.
Vaporeon ex (110/113)
The water Eeveelution, with a hand-disrupting evolve power — the third of a much-loved Eevee trio.
Rayquaza δ (13/113)
The poster child for the whole gimmick — the sky-serpent dragon reimagined as a Lightning type, and one of the most iconic Delta Species cards.
Azumarill (114/113)
The set’s secret rare, hiding one past the end of the checklist — a low-key but essential grab for completists.
Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)
The Eeveelution ex all shared powerful “on-evolve” effects, and the Gold Stars packed a punch of their own.
Vaporeon ex (110/113)
Its Evolutionary Swirl power forces your opponent to shuffle their hand away and redraw fewer cards — a brutal disruption swing the moment it hits the board.
Jolteon ex (109/113)
Evolutionary Thunder sprinkles a damage counter onto every one of your opponent’s Pokémon as it evolves — free, repeatable spread that set up knockouts.
Flareon ex (108/113)
Evolutionary Flame Burns and Confuses the Defending Pokémon on evolve — instant pressure that taxed your opponent every turn.
Groudon Star (111/113)
Beyond its shine, Critical Collection loads Fighting Energy from the discard based on your opponent’s Prizes — a comeback engine that hit harder the further behind you fell.
Trivia
- The set introduced δ Delta Species Pokémon — familiar Pokémon given unexpected types by the electromagnetic experiments of the Holon region — and the concept was popular enough to name a whole mini-era after it.
- It committed hard to the gimmick, printing a Lightning-type Rayquaza, a Fire-type Tyranitar, and Lightning-type Dragonite and Metagross, among many others.
- It debuted Holon’s Pokémon — cards that can be played as either a Pokémon or an Energy, a genuine first for the game.
- Delta Species cards have a distinctive look: “δ Delta Species” under the name, double-helix borders on the artwork, and a shimmering “refractor” holofoil.
- Three Gold Stars — Groudon Star, Kyogre Star and Metagross Star — sit at the top of the chase, alongside the Flareon, Jolteon and Vaporeon ex.
- Its Japanese title, Holon Research Tower, names the very lab whose experiments drive the Delta Species storyline.
- Two theme decks shipped alongside it: Breakthrough (Grass/Lightning/Metal) and Steeplechase (Fire/Metal).
