Synopsis

In Pacifidlog Town, a village of floating log walkways, May prepares for the Pacifidlog Contest, the last before the Hoenn Grand Festival and her final chance to earn a fifth Ribbon. Chasing her Skitty, which is in turn chasing an Aipom, she meets a friendly local Coordinator named Joshua. Ash, inspired by May’s training, works with Snorunt on its new Ice Beam, which is powerful but wildly inaccurate: stray blasts freeze Team Rocket and disrupt other Trainers’ practice. When Joshua suggests May use Skitty in the Contest, his girlfriend Erica, also a Coordinator, misreads the friendly scene, confronts May in a jealous rage and shows off her Jynx before Ash, Brock and Max catch up and the whole group set off for the Contest Hall.

On the way to register, Team Rocket swoop down in their balloon to steal the Coordinators’ Pokémon. May’s Combusken breaks up the attack with Sky Uppercut, Joshua’s Houndoom drives the trio back, and a combination of Skitty’s Assist and Jynx’s Hyper Beam blasts them away. Even working together, however, May and Erica cannot stop bickering, and they agree to settle their dispute on stage in front of the judges. Jessie, undeterred, enters the Contest with Meowth disguised as her Pokémon under the stage name of the mysterious “Jester”, while Ash decides to stay outside and keep drilling Snorunt, hoping to turn its wild Ice Beam into a reliable attack before the Hoenn League, just as May has refined her own Pokémon’s moves for the stage.

Vivian Meridian introduces the judges, Raoul Contesta, Mr. Sukizo and the local Nurse Joy. In the Appeals Round the Jester’s Meowth carves ice sculptures with Fury Swipes, including a statue of Giovanni that Brock finds oddly familiar before it is hastily reshaped into Meowth. Joshua’s Houndoom combines Shadow Ball and Swift, Erica’s Jynx fuses Blizzard with Psychic, and May’s Skitty uses Assist to call up Razor Leaf and Blizzard, finishing with Double Slap to fill the hall with sparkling crystals. All four advance to the Battle Round, where May will face Joshua and Erica will take on the Jester. Jynx’s redesign, with purple rather than black skin, makes this her first appearance in the English dub since the Orange Islands, after years of controversy over her original look.
