01Overview
Meet Nidorina
Everything you need to know about the Poison Pin Pokémon — the creature behind the number.
Meet Nidorina, the Poison Pin Pokémon: a sky-blue, four-legged creature splashed with darker blue patches, with big spiny ears, bright red eyes and two little pointed teeth peeking out from its upper jaw. Every Nidorina is female, and it sits in the middle of its family tree – Nidoran♀ grows into one at level 16, and a touch of a Moon Stone turns it into the mighty Nidoqueen.
Its back bristles with poison barbs, yet Nidorina is the gentle sort. Among friends and family it keeps those barbs tucked flat so nobody gets hurt, and when it curls up deep in its burrow they retract completely – a sure sign that it is relaxed. Sense danger, though, and every barb on its body springs up at once. It digs its burrows on hot savannas and plains, and it becomes visibly nervous if it is separated from its group.
“The female has a gentle temperament. It emits ultrasonic cries that have the power to befuddle foes.”
Pokédex · Pokémon Red (Japan), Green (Japan), FireRed & X · 1996
Above all, Nidorina is a devoted mother. It chews tough food into a soft paste and then spits it out for its little ones, and the horn on its head has withered away, probably so its children don't get poked at mealtimes. That slow-growing horn is also why it would rather not fight. When it has to, it scratches and bites, and a threatened group will band together to drive enemies off with a chorus of ultrasonic cries.
Which brings us to its great puzzle. Nidoran♀ can lay Eggs, but once it evolves, it can't: Nidorina and Nidoqueen belong to the Undiscovered Egg Group, so no amount of Day Care matchmaking will ever turn up an Egg. They are the only Pokémon that lose the ability to breed on evolving. Japanese guidebooks were already saying the evolved forms couldn't lay eggs before breeding even existed in the games – and yet Nidorina's Pokédex entries keep talking about feeding its young.
Fans tend to see Nidorina as the soft heart of the Nido family: the calm counterpart to hot-headed Nidorino. The two share exactly the same base stat total, but Nidorina is built to take a hit, while Nidorino goes for speed and power. And in a neat twist, their Shiny colours swap – a Shiny Nidorina looks rather like an ordinary Nidorino, and the other way round.
How big is Nidorina?

At 0.8 m (2′07″) Nidorina stands a little below kitchen-worktop height, and at 20 kg (44.1 lb) it weighs about the same as a fully packed 20 kg holiday suitcase.

Raises Nidorina's Attack by half, at the cost of making its physical moves less accurate.
Type matchups
How hard each attacking type hits a Poison Pokémon.
Generation I: Bug-type moves were super effective (2×) against Nidorina, because Bug then beat Poison; from Generation II onwards Poison resists Bug. The Fairy resistance applies from Generation VI, when the Fairy type was introduced.

Pokémon GO
Nidorina has been in Pokémon GO since launch in July 2016, waiting at the midpoint of the Nidoran♀ line: evolve a Nidoran♀ to get one, then save up 100 Nidoran♀ Candy to crown it Nidoqueen. As a buddy it finds Candy every 3 km. Its Shiny form arrived on 11–12 October 2018, when a surprise one-day event packed the wild with female Pokémon and brought Shiny Nidoran♀, Nidorina and Nidoqueen in together. The family stepped into the spotlight again on Nidoran Day, 28 November 2020, a one-day event with its own Timed Research and boosted Shiny odds for both Nidoran. Team GO Rocket's Shadow Nidorina can be rescued and purified, which lets it learn Return. In battle it relies on Bite or Poison Sting, backed up by Poison Fang, Dig, Sludge Bomb and, since September 2022, Thunderbolt.
You can't catch Nidorina directly – evolve a Nidoran♀ on the table to add it to your Pokédex.
Comes to life in 3D with its own Stadium Pokédex entry: usually docile, but a whirlwind of bites and scratches once it is angry.
Back in 3D, with the Pokédex showing its Gold or Silver entry depending on the cartridge you plug in.
A rare piece that turns up in Endless Levels 58 and 64, Forever Level 8 and Mr. Who's Den.
Befriend one in Lapis Cave or deep in Wish Cave and it moves into the Safari friend area – promising 'I'll bite with my pointed fangs!'
Wanders Mt. Bristle and Labyrinth Cave, waiting to join your exploration team.
Still found on Mt. Bristle and in Labyrinth Cave in the expanded Explorers adventure.
A wind-up Nidorina can be battled and befriended in the Eternal Tower.
Exclusive to Keep Going! Blazing Adventure Squad, alongside Nidoran♀ and Nidoqueen.
Clear Silbern Museum Stage 95 to catch it; its Opportunist skill occasionally boosts the damage it deals.
Found in the Shrine of Magic in the Ember Mountains and the Surveillance Dunes of the Starlight Islands.
Visit Nidoran♀'s secret base to recruit it – and true to form, it declares 'Protecting my friends is my duty!'
Wild since launch day, with a Shiny form since October 2018 and a Shadow form to purify.
Patrols the Dragonite, Garchomp, Butterfree and Bulbasaur Seas.
Hatch a Nidoran♀ from an Egg and you can raise it into a Nidorina.
Lives in Lapis Cave and the depths of Wish Cave and Purity Forest in the Switch remake.
Moves
In Red and Green, Nidorina fought with claws and teeth: Scratch, Bite and Fury Swipes, a lone Poison Sting, and a famously long wait until level 50 for Double Kick, which Yellow moved to 12. Its TM case was far more ambitious, with Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, Blizzard and even Horn Drill on offer. Because Nidorina cannot breed, its Egg moves always come from its days as a Nidoran♀.
Ruby and Sapphire swapped Tackle for Helping Hand, Flatter and Crunch, and Diamond and Pearl finally added real poison with Toxic Spikes, Poison Fang and the Poison Jab TM. That level-up list then held firm right through Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. Let's Go handed it Toxic and Super Fang, and Sword and Shield rebuilt everything, serving the basics at level 1 and saving a Ground-type Earth Power for level 71. Nidorina sits out Scarlet, Violet and Legends: Z-A, so that is its latest word for now.
Signature moves
Red, Green and Blue made Nidorina wait until level 50 for its two-footed kick, the very last move on its list. Yellow brought it forward to 12, and in Sword and Shield it lands at 29.
Its first taste of venom, and its only Poison-type attack by level-up until Diamond and Pearl. In Sword, Shield and the Let's Go games it is ready from level 1.
Bite is on every Nidorina level-up list since Red and Blue, switching from Normal to Dark in Gold and Silver. Ruby and Sapphire added Crunch at level 53 for a nastier chomp.
Diamond and Pearl gave Nidorina a trap of its own at level 35, scattering poison barbs on the opponent's side. Sword and Shield moved it up to level 22 and also offer it as TR54.
The level-58 finale from Diamond and Pearl right through Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon: a venomous bite that can leave the target badly poisoned.
Sword and Shield's new grand finale at level 71 (also on TR67): a Ground-type blast that hints at the Ground typing Nidoqueen gains with a Moon Stone.
Generation II event Nidoran♀ could come with Lovely Kiss, Moonlight or Sweet Kiss, and evolving kept the move, giving Nidorina a kiss it never learns by itself.
Complete learnsets
Generation I · Red, Green, Blue & Yellow9 level-up · 19 TM/HM
Nidorina lives in the Safari Zone in every version; Red also offers it as a prize at the Rocket Game Corner in Celadon City, and Yellow adds wild Nidorina on Routes 9 and 23. Red, Green and Blue hold Double Kick back until level 50; Yellow moves it up to level 12 and shifts the later moves to make room. Scratch is listed twice, at level 1 and again at level 8, and Nidorina cannot learn any HMs in these games. Move categories follow the old rule, where a move's type decided whether it was physical or special. The transfer moves are Generation II moves that can come back through the Time Capsule, including an event-only Lovely Kiss.

Wild on Routes 13, 14 and 15 in Gold, Silver and Crystal (in Crystal, only in the morning and during the day). Bite is now a Dark-type move. Nidorina belongs to the Undiscovered Egg Group and cannot breed, so its Egg moves are ones a Nidoran♀ can hatch with and keep after evolving; Counter needs chain breeding. Crystal's move tutor teaches Ice Beam and Thunderbolt. Event Nidoran♀ could come with Lovely Kiss, Moonlight or Sweet Kiss, which stay with it when it evolves. Categories still follow type, and Hidden Power's depends on the type it rolls.

Generation V · Black, White, Black 2 & White 213 level-up · 30 TM/HM · 13 egg · 5 tutor · 2 event
Nidorina cannot be found in Black; in White, Black 2 and White 2 it comes from evolving Nidoran♀. The level-up list is unchanged from Generation IV. All tutor moves are Black 2 and White 2 only. Nidoran♀ from the Pokémon Dream World could know Sucker Punch (and, in Black and White, Super Fang) and kept it on evolving.

Generation VIII · Sword & Shield (Version 1.3.0+ and The Crown Tundra), Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl13 level-up · 60 TM/HM · 18 egg
Sword and Shield: Nidorina arrived with Version 1.3.0, by trade or in The Crown Tundra (Expansion Pass), where it wanders around Giant's Bed and turns up in Max Raid Battles in areas such as Giant's Bed and the Frigid Sea. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl: Route 221, Valor Lakefront with the Poké Radar, and the Grand Underground. Both share one rebuilt level-up list: the basics all come at level 1, and Earth Power caps it at level 71. TMs, TRs and Egg moves differ between the two pairs of games, and there are no tutor moves. Some older moves it can bring along, such as Hidden Power, Return and Pursuit, were removed from Sword and Shield and cannot be used there. Nidorina does not appear in Legends: Arceus.

Nidorina in the anime
Debut EP033The Flame Pokémon-athon! · First major role EP100Wherefore Art Thou, Pokémon? · Its appearances on screen, and 4 other trainers who raised one.
Nidorina has never been a headline act in the anime, but it has a happy knack for wandering into love stories. Its finest hour came in the Orange Islands, where Maria, a Nidoran♀ kept from her sweetheart by two squabbling Trainers, evolved with a kiss in an episode lifted straight from Romeo and Juliet. Johto brought another romance, as Temacu's Nidorina sparked yet another of Brock's doomed crushes, and a sterner test in Goldenrod City, where Whitney sent one out first against Ash and watched Cyndaquil's Flamethrower burn it away.
The rest of the time, Nidorina is happy to be part of the scenery: racing on the Laramie Ranch, entering Contests in Hoenn and Kanto, and taking pride of place in blue-Pokémon fanatic Gorman's collection in Pokémon Journeys. Pokémon Horizons gave the species an unexpected new life, too. Dot's online alter ego, Nidothing, wears a costume modelled on Nidorina, and it is convincing enough that Zirc's Rhydon falls head over heels for her.
Other trainers’ Nidorina

First seen: EP100Wherefore Art Thou, Pokémon?
Evolved: EP100Wherefore Art Thou, Pokémon?
Maria began as a Nidoran♀ with an orange ribbon round her neck, hopelessly in love with Tony, the Nidoran♂ belonging to Emily's next-door neighbour and lifelong rival Ralph (EP100). The Trainers' feud kept the sweethearts apart until Misty played matchmaker with forged letters and gifts that went hilariously wrong: a toy plane for the airsick Ralph and flowers for the allergic Emily. When Team Rocket, disguised as newlyweds, made off with both Nidoran in their balloon, Maria refused to go quietly, Scratching Victreebel, freeing a trapped Tony and teaming up with him for an improvised Double Kick. With Emily and Ralph finally agreeing to put their Pokémon first, Maria and Tony shared a kiss and evolved side by side into Nidorina and Nidorino, earning Nidorina its one and only anime Pokédex entry.
- EP100Wherefore Art Thou, Pokémon? · vs Arbok and Victreebel Won

First seen: EP158A Goldenrod Opportunity
Goldenrod City's Gym Leader specialises in Normal types, so Ash was caught off guard when she opened their three-on-three battle with a Poison-type Nidorina (EP158). It came out swinging with Poison Sting and Tackle, but Cyndaquil answered with Flamethrower, and a second blast finished the job. Whitney still won the day, because her Miltank went on to beat Pikachu and send Ash away without a Badge. Nidorina was not seen in the rematch that finally won Ash the Plain Badge (EP159).
- EP158A Goldenrod Opportunity · vs Cyndaquil Lost

First seen: EP198The Heartbreak of Brock
Temacu's Nidorina set The Heartbreak of Brock (EP198) in motion simply by trotting off for a drink at a fountain. Temacu tripped while chasing it, Brock caught her, and she decided on the spot that she had to marry him. She had even raised a Nidorino to give him as a partner for her Nidorina. Team Rocket then raided her father's laboratory, netting the Nido pair, Pikachu and, by mistake, Temacu herself, and when James caught her as she nearly fell from their balloon, her heart switched sides. In the showdown she ordered Nidorina to Tackle Misty's Poliwhirl out of the way to protect James, then jumped in front of a Water Gun meant for him. The Pokémon were saved, poor Brock was left heartbroken once more, and Temacu woke up to fall for her doctor, who, for once, felt the same way.

First seen: JN081Mad About Blue!
Gorman lives and breathes blue Pokémon, so a pale-blue Nidorina fits right into his collection. In Mad About Blue! (JN081) he roped Ash, Goh and Chloe into his blue-themed fun before squaring off with his fellow fanatic and rival, Bluto, in a blindfolded test: each had to name the other's Pokémon by touch alone. Bluto correctly felt his way to Gorman's Nidorina and Phanpy, Gorman named Bluto's Seismitoad and Croagunk, and Team Rocket crashed the contest before it could be settled.
Ash & Nidorina
Ash has never caught a Nidorina, but he has fought one: Whitney led with Nidorina in her Goldenrod Gym battle, and Cyndaquil burned through it with Flamethrower (EP158). He was also there for the species' most romantic moment, scanning Maria with his Pokédex just after she evolved in Yambera (EP100), and he joined the chase to free Temacu's Nidorina from Team Rocket's nets (EP198).

- EP033The Flame Pokémon-athon!Several Nidorina live at the Laramie Ranch, and one runs in the Big P Pokémon Race. When Team Rocket spooks a Tauros, it charges straight into the Nidorina, and the two end up taking their frustrations out on each other.

Anime trivia
- Wherefore Art Thou, Pokémon? (EP100) borrows its plot from Romeo and Juliet, and its lovestruck Nidoran pair take their names, Tony and Maria, from West Side Story. In Japan the episode was simply called "Nidoran's Love Story".
- Nidorina gets star billing in Japan: The Heartbreak of Brock (EP198) was originally titled "Nidorino and Nidorina! Takeshi's Rose-Coloured Days!?"
- Even its two big episodes passed Nidorina over for Who's That Pokémon?. The Japanese quiz in EP100 showed Nidoran♀ and Nidoran♂, while EP198's went to Nidorino.
- Nidorina's only anime Pokédex entry (EP100) credits it with supersonic waves, even though the species could not learn Supersonic in the games until Generation II.
- Whitney's Nidorina is an anime original. In Pokémon Gold and Silver the Normal-type Gym Leader battles with Clefairy and Miltank, so leading with a Poison type in EP158 was a genuine surprise.
- The same voice actress, Satomi Kōrogi, best known as Togepi, voiced both Whitney's and Temacu's Nidorina.
- Nidothing's English name blends Nidorina, Dot and "thing" (with a nod to Nidoking), while her Japanese name, Gurumin, comes from kigurumi, the Japanese word for a costumed character.
“Nidorina, the Poison Pin Pokémon. The evolved form of the female Nidoran. It emits supersonic waves from its mouth to confuse its enemies.”

Nidorina in the movies
1 film, 1 Pikachu short featuring Nidorina.
Nidorina has never had a starring role on the big screen, but it was there almost from the start. It first turned up in Pikachu's Vacation, the short that opened for Mewtwo Strikes Back in 1998, as one of the Pokémon enjoying a day at the Pokémon Theme Park. The Power of One then gave it its most charming film moment: Brock dashing around Professor Ivy's lab with a Nidorina in his arms.

Nidorina gets two little moments in Lugia's film. When Professor Ivy calls Professor Oak to warn him that the weather is going haywire, Brock can be seen rushing around her Valencia Island lab in the background carrying a Nidorina and a Paras, clearly juggling several chores at once. Both are in their normal colours, even though Valencia's Pokémon usually look different: a small slip by the animators. Elsewhere, as Lawrence III's hunt for the legendary birds throws nature off balance, a Nidorina is one of the Pokémon that senses something is wrong.

- PK01Pikachu's Vacation (1998) · A Nidorina at the Pokémon Theme Park
Nidorina's big-screen debut came in the first Pikachu short, which premiered with Mewtwo Strikes Back. When Ash, Misty and Brock let their Pokémon loose for the day at a park built just for Pokémon, a Nidorina is one of the Pokémon enjoying the place. It's also in the cast of the short's Japanese ending animation, set to the song 'Pika Pika Massaichu'.

Nidorina in the Pokémon TCG
23 cards since 1999, oldest first. Tap any card to see it full size.
Nidorina has never been a TCG superstar. There is no Nidorina ex, EX, GX or V, and it cannot Mega Evolve, but for almost thirty years it has been the dependable middle rung of the Nidoran♀ ladder. Its first card arrived in Japan's Pokémon Jungle expansion in March 1997 and reached English players in Jungle in June 1999: a 70 HP Ken Sugimori Nidorina armed with Supersonic and Double Kick. With no Poison type in the TCG, it has changed colour with the rules: Grass in the early years, Psychic from Diamond & Pearl to Sun & Moon, and Darkness since Scarlet & Violet, with one Metal-type Delta Species oddity in EX Dragon Frontiers. Its attacks are all about family. Strength in Numbers counts the Nido relatives on your Bench, Fast Evolution and Fetch Family pull team-mates from the deck, and Rescue and Family Rescue bring fallen friends back. Giovanni and Team Rocket have both put their names to one, and Team Rocket's Nidorina can evolve two of your Darkness Pokémon in a single turn.
Plenty of artists have had a turn with those barbs. Sugimori drew three Nidorina, and so did Atsuko Nishida, starting with a 1998 Japanese vending-machine card that even appears in a Safari Zone deck recipe. Midori Harada, Naoyo Kimura, Sumiyoshi Kizuki, sui, Aya Kusube and Kagemaru Himeno carried it through the 2000s and 2010s, and Himeno's Team Up art later became Nidorina's first TCG Pocket card. Teeziro painted the 151 card and Taiga Kasai drew Team Rocket's Nidorina. Then the 30th Celebration set threw Pokédex No. 030 a party: Miki Tanaka's card heals 30 and bites for 30, while Kasai's promo crams 30 Nidorina into one picture. Pocket players can also hunt for a Shiny Nidorina, painted by Souichirou Gunjima.
Cards to know
- Jungle 40/64 — Ken Sugimori's original Nidorina, with Supersonic to scramble the opponent and a Double Kick that can land for 60. It is in the Game Boy Color TCG too.
- Gym Challenge 44/132 (Giovanni's Nidorina) — The Viridian Gym Leader's Nidorina charges in with Poison Sting Tackle and takes 20 damage every time it does.
- Expansion Sheet 3 (Japanese Vending Machine card) — Atsuko Nishida's vending-machine Nidorina gets stronger with every Nido relative on your Bench, and it has a spot in a Safari Zone deck recipe card from the same series.
- EX Dragon Frontiers 34/101 (Nidorina δ) — A Metal-type Nidorina! Sumiyoshi Kizuki's Delta Species card is the strangest colour the Nidoran♀ line has ever worn.
- Destined Rivals 115/182 (Team Rocket's Nidorina) — Dark Awakening evolves up to two of your Darkness Pokémon straight from the deck, which makes this Rocket recruit a real engine.
- MEP Black Star Promo 101 — Nidorina's 30th-birthday card: it heals 30, bites for 30, and Taiga Kasai's art squeezes in 30 Nidorina.

Nidorina in manga, books & other media
From the earliest manga to story books and songs.
In print, Nidorina's best-known role belongs to Green in Pokémon Adventures. Her Nido starts out as a Nidoran♀, is revealed as a Nidorina in 'Valiant Venomoth!' and stays that way for more than 200 chapters, until a Moon Stone in the Trainer Tower turns her into a Nidoqueen. The Ash & Pikachu manga gives Whitney's Nidorina a comic pratfall over a Psyduck. On the bookshelf, Scholastic's Nidoran's New Friend retells Maria and Tony's love story, a Nidorina comes to Diglett's Birthday Party, and as early as April 1996 an illustrated guide already noted that Nidorina can't produce Eggs. Nidorina is also in the Thursday verse of the English Pokérap and the crying verse of Japan's Pokémon Ieru Kana?, and it has a palm-sized Sitting Cuties plush of its own.

Nidorina trivia
Name origins, design secrets and the facts that make Nidorina such a fan favourite.
What’s in a name?
Nidorina keeps the same name in English and Japanese, and in most other languages too. It seems to stitch together 'needle', for those poison barbs, and 'rhinoceros', for the horn its family is known for, then finishes with '-ina', a feminine diminutive ending familiar from Spanish and Italian. There may be a Japanese pun tucked in as well: nido (二度) means 'twice', which suits the second stage of its line rather nicely.
Design origins
Nidorina looks like a blend of three very different animals: the long ears and soft face of a rabbit, the bristling quills of a porcupine and, for the horn that runs in its family, a dash of rhinoceros. Its poison barbs also call to mind the handful of real mammals that carry venom. The rabbit side may run deeper still. Nidorina evolves with a Moon Stone, a neat nod to the Moon rabbit of East Asian folklore – in Japan, the rabbit said to live on the Moon pounding mochi.

Did you know?
- Nidorina shares its Poison Pin Pokémon category with Nidoran♀, Nidoran♂ and Nidorino – and, more surprisingly, with the Ultra Beast Poipole and its evolution Naganadel.
- Nidorina and Nidoqueen are the only Pokémon that can't breed even though their pre-evolution can: Nidoran♀ produces Eggs, but evolve it and that ability is gone.
- Japanese books such as the Pocket Monsters Encyclopedia and the Official Fan Book of Pocket Monsters said the evolved forms couldn't lay eggs before breeding even existed in the games.
- Even so, several of its Pokédex entries describe Nidorina chewing up food for its children.
- Nidorina's Shiny colouring resembles Nidorino's normal colours – and Shiny Nidorino looks much like a regular Nidorina.
- Nidorina and Nidorino have exactly the same base stat total, 365. Nidorina puts more into HP and Defence; Nidorino into Attack and Speed.
- It yields 2 HP effort values when defeated, while its male counterpart Nidorino gives 2 Attack instead.
- Nidorina was all-female before Pokémon genders even existed: in Generation I the Nidoran family's two halves were simply separate species, and genders arrived in Gold and Silver.
- Because every Nidorina is female, its Rivalry Ability always powers it up against female opponents and weakens it against males.
- The Nidorina you trade for on Route 11 in Red and Blue is nicknamed Terry. FireRed renamed it Nina, while LeafGreen's trade gives you a Nidorino called Nino instead.
- In Red, Celadon City's Rocket Game Corner sells a Lv. 17 Nidorina for 1,200 coins; Blue's prize counter offers Nidorino instead.
- Trade a Nidorina from Red or Blue to Gold, Silver or Crystal through the Time Capsule and it arrives holding a Berry.
- In Generation I, Bug-type moves were super effective against Nidorina, because Bug beat Poison back then; today Poison resists Bug.
- In Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, Master Trainer Fred waits in the Underground Path between Routes 7 and 8 with a Lv. 70 Nidorina knowing Super Fang, Thunder and Blizzard.
- In Pokémon Adventures, Green's Nidorina is nicknamed Nido and later evolves into Nidoqueen.
