01Overview

Meet Kadabra

Everything you need to know about the Psi Pokémon — the creature behind the number.

Kadabra is the Psi Pokémon, the middle chapter of the Abra family's story. At level 16, little Abra shoots up into a tall, yellow, faintly fox-like figure with long pointed ears, narrow deep-set eyes and a drooping moustache – longer on males than on females. A red star marks its forehead, three red wavy lines run across its small belly, and a thick tail with a brown band completes the look.

Then there is the spoon. Kadabra always carries a silver one, and it is no prop: the spoon amplifies the alpha waves in its brain, and without it Kadabra's telekinetic power is said to drop to half. It stares at the spoon to focus its mind before letting loose – and apparently gold spoons are no good. Meanwhile it quietly stores psychic energy in the star on its forehead, saving up for evolution.

“It happened one morning – a boy with extrasensory powers awoke in bed transformed into Kadabra.”

Pokédex · Pokémon Red (Japan), Green (Japan) & FireRed · 1996

Those alpha waves make Kadabra an unsettling neighbour. Simply standing close to one can bring on a headache. Clocks run backwards, machines malfunction and delicate instruments are ruined; if one is nearby, an eerie shadow may creep across TV screens, a sight said to bring bad luck. The more danger it faces, the stronger its psychic power grows, and when it closes its eyes twice as many alpha particles stream from its body.

Kadabra also carries one of the Pokédex's spookiest legends. Since its very first entry, the story goes that a boy with psychic powers woke up one morning transformed into a Kadabra; later versions place him in the middle of research into extrasensory powers, while the researchers of Hisui politely file the tale as unverified. Whatever the truth, Kadabra sleeps floating in mid-air with its springy tail for a pillow, makes its home in towns and cities – and only people with a particularly strong psyche can hope to become its Trainer.

For fans, Kadabra is Sabrina's Pokémon through and through – her Abra evolved into one mid-battle against Ash – and, because it only becomes Alakazam through a trade, it has sent players reaching for a link cable since 1996. It has a real-world story too: in 2000 the illusionist Uri Geller took legal action over Kadabra, and no new Kadabra card was printed between Skyridge in 2003 and Pokémon Card 151 in 2023, a gap widely linked to the dispute. Geller lifted his objection in 2020.

How big is Kadabra?

Kadabra silhouette
Kadabra1.3 m (4′03″)
Trainer1.60 m (5′03″)

At 1.3 m, Kadabra stands about as tall as a nine-year-old – yet at 56.5 kg it weighs as much as a grown adult, which is an awful lot of brain (and one silver spoon).

Base stats total 400. Sp. Atk (120) and Speed (105) do the heavy lifting, while Attack 35 and Defence 30 leave it fragile against physical hits. In Generation I Kadabra had a single Special stat of 120; when Gold and Silver split Special in two, Sp. Atk kept the 120 and Sp. Def was set at 70, and its base stats have stayed the same ever since. Base experience was 145 in Generations I–IV and has been 140 since; base friendship was 70 in Generations II–VII and is 50 from Sword & Shield onwards. In the Pokéathlon of HeartGold and SoulSilver it rates Speed 3–4, Power 1–3, Technique 4–5, Stamina 2–3 and Jump 2–3 stars.

Spin-offs & cameos

Pokémon GO

Kadabra has been in Pokémon GO since launch day on 6 July 2016. An Abra evolves into it for 25 Candy, and reaching Alakazam costs another 100 – unless you trade it first: since 10 January 2020, a traded Kadabra evolves into Alakazam for no Candy at all. As a buddy it earns Candy every 3 km. Shiny Kadabra arrived on 13 June 2019 during Pokémon GO Fest 2019 in Chicago, Shadow Kadabra followed on 5 September 2019 (with Frustration, swapped for Return once purified), and it appeared as a 3-star raid boss from 21 to 27 February 2021, in the Kanto celebration that followed Pokémon GO Tour: Kanto. It battles with Psycho Cut or Confusion plus Psybeam, Dazzling Gleam or Shadow Ball.

Collectable card

Kadabra's Base Set card can be pulled from the Colosseum booster pack and played in your digital deck.

Evolution

Kadabra can't be caught on the tables – catch an Abra and evolve it to fill in its page.

Battler / Gym Leader's Pokémon

Battles in full 3D with its own Stadium Pokédex entry, and Sabrina sends one out in Round 1 of the Gym Leader Castle, armed with Disable, Psybeam, Reflect and Seismic Toss.

Pokédex entry

Its Pokédex text changes with the Game Boy cartridge you plug in: Gold's entry for Red, Silver or Crystal, Silver's for Blue, Gold or Yellow.

Collectable card

The Base Set Kadabra card returns in the sequel, this time in the Legendary Power booster pack.

Evolution

Once again Kadabra can only be obtained by evolving an Abra.

Puzzle piece

A rare piece that turns up on the Phobosphere and in Mr. Who's Den.

Recruitable

Lurks deep in Buried Relic, Wish Cave and Solar Cave, and once recruited it lives in the Decrepit Lab Friend Area. Its lines include 'Let me demonstrate real psychic power!'

Recruitable

Can be found and recruited in Treeshroud Forest, Spacial Rift and Lost Wilderness.

Recruitable

Waits in the same three dungeons as in Explorers of Time and Darkness.

Toy

A toy Kadabra brawls its way through the Eternal Tower.

Toy

Found in the Tower and, after the ending, at Challenger's Ground.

Warrior's partner

Toy

One of the collectable toys you can battle with.

Puzzle piece

Shows up on Stage 3 of the Safari Jungle – but only on Thursdays.

Event Pokémon

Joined the Pokémon Safari event stages, bringing the Counterattack skill, which deals more damage the more disruptions there are.

Toy

Waits in the Blue Tower on the Sapphire Sea.

Traveling Pokémon

Arrives as one of the Traveling Pokémon; among its lines is the boast 'Alpha waves are radiating from all over my body!'

Catchable / evolution

Available since launch day; a traded Kadabra evolves into Alakazam without spending a single Candy.

Wild Pokémon

A cube-shaped Kadabra appears on Tumblecube Island, at stages including Pincushion Plain and Happenstance Island.

Toy

Could be found on several seas, from the Gengar Sea and Mimikyu Sea to the Rowlet and Bulbasaur Seas.

Egg Pokémon

Hatch an Abra from a Pokémon Egg and it can evolve into Kadabra as your player character's partner.

Recruitable

Turns up in Western Cave, Buried Relic, Wish Cave and Solar Cave, as well as in Mystery Houses.

Pokédex entry

Listed as #214 in Pokopia's Pokédex, which reminds you that its psychic powers are halved without a silver spoon.

Moves

Kadabra arrived in Red and Green with a tidy, all-psychic toolkit: Teleport for a quick getaway, Confusion and Psybeam to attack, Recover and Reflect to stay in the fight, and a level-38 Psychic as the showpiece. Yellow handed it Kinesis, the spoon-bending trick that became its calling card, and Gold and Silver added Future Sight, a delayed strike that lands two turns later. Through Ruby and Sapphire, Diamond and Pearl and Black and White it kept collecting clever tools, from Role Play and Trick to Miracle Eye, Ally Switch and Telekinesis, plus a physical edge in Psycho Cut.

Modern games have pressed fast-forward. Since Sword and Shield, Confusion is the move it learns on evolving, Psybeam arrives at level 5 and the list rattles through Psyshock and Psychic before ending with Calm Mind at 50, a run that Legends: Z-A largely keeps. Legends: Arceus trimmed things to eight moves, slipping in Hypnosis and Zen Headbutt, while Let's Go gave it a Kanto-flavoured mix with Night Shade and Substitute. In most games its TM case runs deep too, from Thunder Wave and the elemental punches to Shadow Ball, Energy Ball and Dazzling Gleam.

Signature moves

PsychicTeleport

The family escape act. Kadabra knows it from the very start in every game from Red and Green to Legends: Z-A, and it was even TM30 back in Red and Blue.

PsychicKinesis

The famous spoon-bend, which puts foes off their aim by lowering their accuracy. Red and Blue Kadabra never learned it, but it has been a starting move ever since Yellow, and in Sun, Moon and Let's Go it is also the move learned on evolving. It sits out both Legends games.

PsychicConfusion

Abra's evolution present: Kadabra picks it up at level 16, the moment Abra evolves, from Red and Blue to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. From Sword and Shield onwards it is the move learned on evolving, in Legends: Arceus and Legends: Z-A too.

PsychicPsychic

The headline attack, found in every level-up list Kadabra has ever had: level 38 in Red and Blue, 46 in Black and White and 35 from Sword and Shield onwards (43 in Legends: Arceus). It has been a TM, TR or tutor move in every generation as well.

NormalRecover

Built-in first aid. Like Psychic, it appears in every single Kadabra level-up list, from level 31 in Red and Blue to level 25 in Sword, Shield and Legends: Z-A.

PsychicFuture Sight

A blast from the future that lands two turns later. It joined at level 31 in Gold and Silver, grew from 80 power to 100 in Black and White and to 120 from X and Y, and Legends: Z-A still saves it for level 45.

PsychicPsycho Cut

A sharp, physical slash of psychic energy that arrived at level 34 in Diamond and Pearl. Sword and Shield moved it up to level 20 and made it TM69, and both Legends games teach it by levelling up.

Complete learnsets

Generation I · Red, Green, Blue & Yellow10 level-up · 25 TM/HM

In Red, Green and Blue, Kadabra lurks in Cerulean Cave; in Yellow it turns up on Route 8, and in every version Abra evolves into it at level 16. The versions differ only in the starting moves: a Red, Green or Blue Kadabra opens with Teleport, Confusion and Disable, while a Yellow one starts with Teleport and Kinesis. From level 16 the lists match: Confusion, then Disable (20), Psybeam (27), Recover (31), Psychic (38) and Reflect (42). In Generations I to III a move's type decides whether it is physical or special, so Psychic, Fire, Ice and Electric attacks are all special here. Moves keep their original spellings (ThunderPunch). The transfer list shows moves learned in Gold, Silver or Crystal that can travel back through the Time Capsule, including Barrier and Light Screen, which an Abra can inherit by breeding.

Gold, Silver and Crystal place Kadabra on Route 8, back in Kanto. Future Sight joins the level-up list at 31: a delayed blast that strikes two turns later, and in these early games its damage has no type, so it gets no same-type boost. Confusion is now both a starting move and the level-16 move, Disable comes at 18 and Psybeam at 21, and Reflect slides to the end of the list at 45. Breeding arrives: an Abra can inherit Barrier, Encore and Light Screen from a Mr. Mime father, or Light Screen from Electabuzz, and keeps them after evolving. A Kadabra evolved from the Foresight Abra handed out at the Pokémon Center New York in late 2002 can know Foresight too. Categories still follow the move's type, Hidden Power's depends on the type it rolls, and Curse belongs to its own mystery type. The transfer list shows Red, Blue and Yellow moves that can come forward through the Time Capsule.

Generation III · Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed & LeafGreen (tutor moves also cover XD)12 level-up · 27 TM/HM · 6 egg · 21 tutor

Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald have no wild Kadabra, so evolve an Abra; FireRed and LeafGreen bring it back to Cerulean Cave. It can't be caught in Colosseum or XD, but one traded into XD can still use that game's move tutors. The level-up list grows to 12 moves: Reflect jumps up to 23, Recover (25) and Future Sight (30) come a little sooner, Psychic arrives at 36, and the new Role Play (33) and Trick (43) bring some mischief. The elemental punches and Knock Off join the egg moves, with Hitmonchan, Medicham and friends as fathers. Tutor games are FireRed/LeafGreen, Emerald and XD, and Emerald's tutors add the elemental punches, DynamicPunch, Psych Up and more. Categories still follow type, and moves from Generations I and II cannot be carried into these games.

Generation V · Black, White, Black 2 & White 216 level-up · 36 TM/HM · 10 egg · 20 tutor

In White, Black 2 and White 2, evolve an Abra; Black can only receive a Kadabra from another game. Ally Switch (24) and Telekinesis (34) are new, and the 16-move list now closes with Trick at 52. Future Sight is reworked to 100 power and 100% accuracy, and from here on it counts as a Psychic-type attack, so it gets the same-type boost. Disable is now 100% accurate and Toxic 90%. Psyshock (TM03), Telekinesis (TM19) and Ally Switch (TM51) are new TMs, and move tutors are Black 2/White 2 only. Guard Split and Skill Swap join the egg moves. In the Pokémon Dream World, an Abra from the Spooky Manor could know Gravity.

Generation VI · X, Y, Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire16 level-up · 38 TM/HM · 12 egg · 21 tutor

In X, Y, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, evolve an Abra. X and Y keep the Black and White level-up list almost unchanged, though Trick now comes at 50. Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire shuffle it forward: Psybeam at 21, Psycho Cut at 28, Psychic at 38 and Trick at 46, with Ally Switch pushed back to 36. Future Sight hits harder still at 120 power. Dazzling Gleam (TM99) and Confide (TM100) are new TMs, TM94 is Secret Power in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire only, and move tutors are Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire only. Two new egg moves arrive: Ally Switch, passed down by Kadabra or Alakazam, and Psycho Shift, which needs chain breeding from Spinda; Hawlucha can now pass on Encore too. Knock Off rises to 65 power, and Barrier drops to 20 PP.

Generation VII · Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon17 level-up · 36 TM/HM · 13 egg · 23 tutor

One level-up list covers Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, the same as Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire's except that Kinesis is now also the move Kadabra learns on evolving. With HMs and the Flash TM gone, Flash can only be brought in from an older game. Thunder Wave is 90% accurate and Swagger 85%. Move tutors are Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon only, and now include Ally Switch and Telekinesis. Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon add Psychic Terrain as an egg move from Beheeyem, while Skill Swap now needs chain breeding from Drowzee or Elgyem.

Generation VIII · Sword & Shield (Version 1.2.0+ and the Expansion Pass), Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl15 level-up · 87 TM/HM · 15 egg · 1 tutor

Kadabra isn't in Sword and Shield's original Galar Pokédex: it arrives by trade from Version 1.2.0, and the Expansion Pass has it wandering the Fields of Honor and the Soothing Wetlands, in Max Raid Battles at the Soothing Wetlands and Challenge Beach, and in Dynamax Adventures. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl have it on Route 215, in Victory Road and in the Grand Underground's Dazzling Cave and Stargleam Cavern. One level-up list covers both pairs of games, and it moves at a brisk pace: Confusion on evolving, then Psybeam (5), Reflect (10), Ally Switch (15), Psycho Cut (20), Recover (25), Psyshock (30), Psychic (35), Role Play (40), Future Sight (45) and Calm Mind (50). Miracle Eye, Telekinesis and Trick leave the list. TMs, TRs and egg moves are marked SwSh or BDSP (TRs are Sword and Shield's single-use Technical Records), and an Expansion Pass move tutor teaches Expanding Force. An Abra hatched in either pair of games can know Confusion, and in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl an Abra, Kadabra or Alakazam caught in the Grand Underground can pass on Guard Split or Psycho Shift. Transfer moves flagged as unusable can be brought along but not used in Sword and Shield; several others are ordinary TMs or egg moves in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

Kadabra appears at Sandgem Flats in the Obsidian Fieldlands and at Lake Acuity in the Alabaster Icelands, pops out of space-time distortions in the Cobalt Coastlands and joins mass outbreaks in several areas. Moves work differently here: each has a level at which it is learned and a higher level at which it is mastered, after which it can be used in strong or agile style. Power is listed for normal, strong and agile style, and accuracy for normal and strong style. The slimmed-down eight-move list keeps Teleport and Confusion (on evolving) and adds Hypnosis (6), Calm Mind (11), Psycho Cut (18), Zen Headbutt (25), Recover (34) and Psychic (43). There are no TMs or breeding; the move tutor teaches 16 moves, including Shadow Ball, Energy Ball and Dazzling Gleam. Psychic has 80 power in this game.

Kadabra in the anime

Debut EP022Abra and the Psychic Showdown · Its appearances on screen, and 1 other trainer who raised one.

Kadabra's anime career is short, sharp and built around one partnership. It burst on to the screen in Abra and the Psychic Showdown (EP022), when Sabrina's sleepy Abra evolved in the middle of her Gym battle with Ash and promptly took Pikachu apart, turning its own Thunder back on it and forcing Ash to throw in the towel. The rematch in Haunter versus Kadabra (EP024) was settled not by power but by a fit of the giggles: Haunter's clowning cracked Sabrina's icy calm, and the Kadabra that shares her mind could not stop laughing either, and Ash won the Marsh Badge.

Away from the Saffron Gym, Kadabra's appearances are fleeting: a Trainer's Kadabra beaten by Prima's Cloyster (EP099), a turn as the English dub's Who's That Pokémon? (EP260), a band of party-loving Psychic Pokémon in an abandoned mining town in Fear Factor Phony (AG146), a cameo in the opening of Kyurem VS. The Sword of Justice and a Trainer's Kadabra in Ecruteak City in Pokémon Evolutions (PE07).

First seen: EP022Abra and the Psychic Showdown
Evolved: EP022Abra and the Psychic Showdown
Now: With Sabrina

Ash arrived in Saffron City in Abra and the Psychic Showdown (EP022) ignoring every warning to stay away from the Gym. A little girl with glowing eyes agreed to a match on one condition – if Ash lost, he and his friends would have to stay and play with her. Then the gates opened to reveal the girl perched on the lap of Sabrina herself, and out came Sabrina's Abra, fast asleep. Ash's Pokédex warned that Abra can use telekinesis even while sleeping, and sure enough it Teleported out of the way of Pikachu's Thunder Shock and reappeared behind it.

Then Sabrina turned her psychic power on her own Pokémon, and Abra evolved into Kadabra on the spot. Ash cried foul, but Misty pointed out that evolving mid-match is perfectly legal. Pikachu tried to fill the arena with Thunder so that Kadabra had nowhere to teleport to, but Kadabra took control of the storm with Confusion and sent it back as a dragon of lightning. It finished the job with Psychic, forcing Pikachu to dance before slamming it into the ceiling and the floor again and again, until Ash ran to Pikachu's side and forfeited (EP022).

Losing meant playing Sabrina's game: the gang were shrunk into a dollhouse and a toy box before a mysterious man teleported them to safety and told Ash that a Ghost-type Pokémon from Lavender Town could beat Sabrina. Kadabra appears in flashback as Ash goes looking for one in The Tower of Terror (EP023).

The rematch in Haunter versus Kadabra (EP024) started badly. Sabrina sent out Kadabra, Haunter vanished, Ash was pushed into another forfeit and his other Pokémon refused to battle. Sabrina turned Brock and Misty into dolls, and the mysterious man – in fact Sabrina's father – explained that her obsession with psychic training had driven her away from her parents and split her in two: the grown-up Trainer and a lonely little doll-girl.

When Ash came back once more and Haunter disappeared again, Pikachu stepped up to face Kadabra itself. Kadabra dodged a Thunder Shock with Teleport, struck back with Psybeam and used Recover to shrug off a Thunderbolt. Then Haunter reappeared, pulling faces and setting off a bomb right in front of Sabrina, and she burst out laughing for the first time in years. Linked to her mind, Kadabra collapsed into giggles too and could not go on. Since Haunter had not joined the battle, Sabrina's father ruled it fair and declared Pikachu the winner. Ash received the Marsh Badge, Brock and Misty were changed back, and Haunter chose to stay with Sabrina (EP024).

Personality

Kadabra has little personality of its own: it mirrors Sabrina. The two share a psychic bond so close that its moods follow hers – cold and clinical while she was icy and remote, and doubled up with laughter the moment Haunter made her crack (EP024).

Key battles

Ash & Kadabra

Ash has never owned a Kadabra, but Sabrina's made his Saffron Gym challenge a long, strange ordeal. It forced him to forfeit twice – first to spare Pikachu a battering (EP022), then again when Haunter vanished at the start of his rematch – before Haunter's clowning left Sabrina and Kadabra helpless with laughter and won Pikachu the match and Ash the Marsh Badge (EP024). During his Battle Frontier travels, Ash also threw a party for a band of abandoned Psychic Pokémon, Kadabra among them (AG146).

Anime trivia

  • Despite the title, Haunter never actually battles Kadabra in Haunter versus Kadabra (EP024). It wins the day by making Sabrina laugh, while Pikachu does the fighting.
  • In Japanese, Sabrina's Kadabra was voiced by Unshō Ishizuka, the voice of Professor Oak and the series' narrator. In the English dub, Maddie Blaustein – the voice of Team Rocket's Meowth – voiced it as both Abra and Kadabra.
  • Fear Factor Phony (AG146) reused Maddie Blaustein's recordings for Kadabra, Drowzee and Alakazam.
  • When Ash and his friends met Mira in Sandshrew's Locker! (DP047), she travelled with an Abra, whose Teleport whisked the group from place to place. In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, Mira's partner is a Kadabra.

Kadabra in the Pokémon TCG

15 cards since 1999, oldest first. Tap any card to see it full size.

Kadabra has been in the Pokémon TCG since the very beginning. It was in Japan's first expansion in October 1996 and in Base Set for English players in January 1999, drawn by Ken Sugimori, with a Recover attack that wipes away all its damage. The next few years were busy: Japanese vending-machine sheets added two more, Team Rocket brought the shady Dark Kadabra, Gym Challenge gave Sabrina one of her own, and the e-Card sets Expedition and Skyridge followed. Japanese fans could even post a Kadabra card with the Bill's PC card to get an Alakazam promo back, a paper take on trade evolution. Then the run stopped. No new Kadabra card followed Skyridge (May 2003) until Pokémon Card 151 in 2023, a gap widely linked to the legal action the illusionist Uri Geller took against Nintendo in 2000, which was dismissed in 2003. Abra and Alakazam carried on without it, including an Abra that could leap straight to Alakazam and several Basic Alakazam that needed no Kadabra at all. On 28 November 2020 Geller apologised and lifted his objection. It returned in Japan's Pokémon Card 151 in June 2023 and in the English 151 set that September.

The art has come a long way. The early cards range from Sugimori's clean official style to Kagemaru Himeno's moody Dark Kadabra, and the e-Card years brought in Hajime Kusajima and Toshinao Aoki. The comeback era handed Kadabra to modern illustrators: Mitsuhiro Arita drew the 151 return, Souichirou Gunjima painted a Shiny Kadabra for Paldean Fates, and Uninori and Saboteri followed in Twilight Masquerade and Mega Evolution, where Kadabra gained an Ability, Psychic Draw, that draws two cards as it evolves. Pokémon TCG Pocket brings things full circle. Its first Kadabra reuses Sugimori's Base Set art, and Mousho's Shining Revelry card sets Kadabra in a spooky night-time scene between Abra and Alakazam.

Cards to know

  • Base Set 32/102 — Ken Sugimori's original spoon-bender, which can wipe itself clean with Recover. A quarter of a century later, the same art opened Kadabra's account in TCG Pocket.
  • Team Rocket 39/82 (Dark Kadabra) — Kagemaru Himeno's shifty Dark Kadabra seems to clutch a twisted spoon and lets you swap a card in your hand for a fresh draw.
  • Gym Challenge 58/132 (Sabrina's Kadabra) — The Saffron City Gym Leader's own Kadabra. A lucky Life Drain leaves the Defending Pokémon clinging on with just 10 HP.
  • Skyridge 69/144 — Kadabra's final e-Card, with a secret Poké-Power, Psy-Capture, hidden in its e-Reader dot code. No new Kadabra followed until 151 in 2023.
  • 151 064/165 — The comeback. Mitsuhiro Arita's Kadabra brought it back to the card game in 2023, and its Teleportation Attack fittingly zaps it off to the Bench.
  • TCG Pocket Shining Revelry 030/072 — Mousho's spooky middle chapter: Abra, Kadabra and Alakazam share one eerie town at night across three cards.

Kadabra in manga, books & other media

From the earliest manga to story books and songs.

Kadabra's manga career began with a magic show. In the March 1997 issue of CoroCoro Comic, Kosaku Anakubo's Pocket Monsters had Sabrina's Kadabra pop out of a crystal ball for a contest with Red's Clefairy that ends with her castle blown to pieces. Pokémon Adventures turned Sabrina's Kadabra into a proper menace, impersonating Professor Oak and helping Sabrina besiege Saffron City. Later arcs gave the species two clever turns: Platinum's rental Kadabra outfoxes Thorton with a secret Drain Punch, and Hareta's Kadabra in Diamond and Pearl Adventure! swaps away its Ability so Regigigas can fight. Magical Pokémon Journey played it for laughs, with a spoon-bending wild Kadabra who ends up under a Snorlax. On the bookshelf it is the wise forest elder of the picture book Where's Clefairy's Voice? and the star of Scholastic's Night in the Haunted Tower, and as early as April 1996 a Japanese illustrated guide nodded to Kafka's The Metamorphosis in its Kadabra entry. Away from fiction, there is the real-world story of Uri Geller's legal action over Kadabra.

Manga

Pocket Monsters PM012, 'The Life-or-Death Magic Duel!!' (1997): Kadabra's manga debut
Pokémon Pocket MonstersSabrina · PM012 'The Life-or-Death Magic Duel!!' / volume 2 · 1997In Kosaku Anakubo's slapstick comedy, Red, Clefairy and Pikachu arrive at Sabrina's castle, and when Clefairy touches her crystal ball, out comes Kadabra. Sabrina challenges Clefairy to a magic contest with Kadabra as its opponent, and Kadabra's tricks include, naturally, bending a spoon. It all ends with a bang: Clefairy has Kadabra light the fire for its turn, dynamite goes off with it, and the castle is blown to pieces.
Pokémon Adventures PS020, 'Meanwhile...Vileplume!': Sabrina's Kadabra first appears
Pokémon AdventuresSabrina · PS020 'Meanwhile…Vileplume!' / volume 2 · 1997Sabrina's Kadabra is an early villain of Pokémon Adventures. It first appears carrying Sabrina as she watches Red from above (PS020). In 'Kalling Kadabra' (PS027) it fools Red by posing as Professor Oak in his laboratory, with Hypnosis behind the illusion, until a Leech Seed exposes it, and its disguise looks just like the Trading Card Game's Impostor Professor Oak card. During the siege of Saffron City it takes on Green, teleporting away from her attacks and pinning her Blasty with Disable (PS030). In 'A Little Kadabra'll Do It' (PS032) it blows away her smokescreen with Psychic, freezes Green and her Horsea with Disable, slashes at her with its spoon and calls Articuno and Zapdos down around Red. Much later it is still at Sabrina's side, teleporting the pair of them away from a hot spring (PS157).
Pokémon Adventures PS427, 'Uprooting Seedot': Platinum picks a rental Kadabra in the Battle Factory
Pokémon AdventuresPlatinum (a Battle Factory rental) · PS427 'Uprooting Seedot' / volume 39 (VIZ: Diamond and Pearl/Platinum volume 10) · 2011In the Battle Factory, where challengers fight with rental Pokémon, Platinum trades her Grimer for a Kadabra before her battle with Factory Head Thorton. When it hits his Tyranitar with Psycho Cut, Thorton laughs that Psychic moves can't touch a Dark type, but Platinum points out that Kadabra had already used Miracle Eye. In 'Outlasting Ledian' (PS428) Kadabra takes a battering from Sand Stream, stays in and punches Tyranitar out cold. Against Ursaring it even drops its spoon and Thorton thinks the match is his, until the judges declare the challenger the winner: Kadabra had been using Drain Punch all along.
Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Adventure! DPA16, 'Team Galactic's Ultimate Warrior'
Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Adventure!Hareta · DPA16 'Team Galactic's Ultimate Warrior' / volume 4 · 2008Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Adventure! gives Hareta's Kadabra one selfless job. In the battle against Mitsumi it uses Skill Swap to trade Abilities with Hareta's Regigigas, which frees the giant from Slow Start so it can strike at once, and Regigigas promptly drops a Mega Punch on Infernape from the ceiling. Kadabra is beaten soon afterwards, having given itself up for the plan.
Magical Pokémon Journey PPPB06, 'The Heart's Search'
Magical Pokémon JourneyWild · PPPB06 'The Heart's Search' / volume 3 (bonus story) · 1999Yumi Tsukirino's sweet comedy gives a wild Kadabra a starring turn. When Hazel loses her photos of Almond, Kadabra says it can sense what everyone is looking for and offers its Psychic powers, bending a spoon with Kinesis to show what that means. It shows off Teleport and Psywave while nobody is watching, announces that the photo is under a Snorlax, then uses Hypnosis on the Snorlax, which is already fast asleep. A picnic break finally wakes Snorlax, which eats the food and lies back down, trapping Kadabra underneath. VIZ named one of its English monthly comic issues after the story: Kadabra's Magic Show (2001).

Night in the Haunted Tower (Pokémon Chapter Book, #4)chapter bookScholastic · 1999This retelling of Ash's Saffron City episodes is a Kadabra story from start to finish. Sabrina's Abra evolves after teleporting away from Pikachu's Thunder Shock, and the new Kadabra turns Pikachu's own electricity back on him, then makes him dance with Psychic until Ash forfeits. In the rematch it teleports out of trouble, hits back with Psybeam and heals itself with Recover. Then Haunter licks Sabrina and sets her laughing, and Kadabra, linked to her mind, laughs along and can't battle, so Ash wins.
An Illustrated Book of POCKET MONSTERS (1996)
An Illustrated Book of POCKET MONSTERSguideFamitsu (Japan only) · 1996Published just weeks after Red and Green. Its Kadabra entry mentions a short story called 'The Metamorphosis', an open nod to Franz Kafka, and it treats the tale of the boy who turned into a Kadabra as fiction rather than fact.

Other media

Uri Geller and Kadabrareal world2000In 2000 the illusionist Uri Geller took legal action against Nintendo, claiming that Kadabra used his likeness without permission; he pointed to its bent spoon and to its Japanese name, Yungerer. The case was dismissed on 3 March 2003. No new Kadabra card was printed between Skyridge (2003) and Pokémon Card 151, a gap widely linked to the dispute. On 28 November 2020 Geller apologised and lifted his objection, and Kadabra returned to the card game in 151, released on 16 June 2023 in Japan and 22 September 2023 in English.
Aim to Be a Pokémon Master / Pokémon Theme (the first opening animations)music1997The very first Japanese opening animation has a slip-up: in its gallery of Pokémon pictures, a Kadabra appears under the label 'Foodin', Alakazam's Japanese name. The mistake ran in the first two episodes, and from EP003 a proper Alakazam picture took its place. Over in the English dub, the first opening, Pokémon Theme, gives Sabrina's Kadabra a quick clip of its own.

Kadabra trivia

Name origins, design secrets and the facts that make Kadabra such a fan favourite.

What’s in a name?

Kadabra's English name comes from 'abracadabra', the incantation of stage magicians everywhere – and split across Abra and Kadabra, the family spells it out in full. During the development of Red and Green it was briefly known in English as Pocus, another nod to a conjuror's patter. Its Japanese name, Yungerer (ユンゲラー), is a garbled form of the name of Uri Geller, the illusionist famous for spoon bending. Most European languages simply keep Kadabra, while the Korean (Yunghelar), Chinese and Thai names are transcriptions of the Japanese one.

Design origins

Kadabra looks like a stage magician who has swapped the top hat for a bent spoon: it draws on spoon benders and conjurors, and on alchemy, the early science that tried to transform metals by mystical means. Its face is distinctly fox-like – foxes are tied to magic in many mythologies – and its moustache may be an exaggerated take on a fox's whiskers. The star on its forehead and the wavy lines on its belly appear to come from Zener cards, the small deck of symbols used in experiments testing for extrasensory perception and clairvoyance in the early 1930s. Its spooky legend of a boy transformed overnight may owe something to Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis, or to the Ultra Q episode 'Kanegon's Cocoon', in which a boy turns into a yellow monster. The design took a little while to settle: the original Red and Green sprite had no forehead star and no belly pattern, the Red and Blue sprite still lacked the star, and the Red and Green sprite even seems to show a fourth finger folded into its palm – every depiction since has kept to three.
