01Overview

Meet Weepinbell

Everything you need to know about the Flycatcher Pokémon — the creature behind the number.

Weepinbell is the Flycatcher Pokémon, the Grass/Poison middle stage of the Bellsprout line. Bellsprout becomes Weepinbell at level 21, and a Leaf Stone turns it into Victreebel. Where Bellsprout is all spindly stem, Weepinbell is a plump yellow bell with round eyes, a wide gaping mouth edged with pink lips and a broad green leaf on either side. A little brown hooked stem curls from the top of its head, and three small green spots sit above its eyes.

Think of it as a pitcher plant with an appetite. Weepinbell passes itself off as an ordinary forest plant and waits for something careless to wander close. Then it strikes: a cloud of poison powder to stop the victim in its tracks, followed by a spray of acid to finish the job. When hunger really bites, it will swallow anything that moves, and if a meal is too big for its mouth, it slices it up with its razor-sharp leaves and eats every last morsel.

“The leafy parts act as cutters for slashing foes. It spits a fluid that dissolves everything.”

Pokédex · Pokémon Red (Japan), Green (Japan), FireRed, X & Violet · 1996

All that acid has to live somewhere, and it lives inside Weepinbell. The Pokémon only avoids digesting itself because it also oozes a protective, neutralising fluid. It is a creature of temperate forests and jungles, and at night it hooks the large hook on its rear end over a tree branch and dozes, dangling like a bell. Restless sleepers pay for it: wriggle too much and Weepinbell may wake up on the ground. Some, Pokémon Sleep reveals, simply carry on snoozing where they land.

Its first home was Japan's Pokémon Green (and later the international Blue), on the routes linking Lavender Town to Fuchsia City. In Pokémon Yellow, Erika picks one for her Celadon Gym team, and Kalos Gym Leader Ramos relies on another in X and Y, a partnership that carries on in Pokémon Masters EX. On screen, Weepinbell has battled for Erika and Ramos and twice joined James of Team Rocket, both times growing into Victreebel.

Designed by Atsuko Nishida, Weepinbell pairs a cheerful shape with some genuinely menacing Pokédex entries. Even its name has a wistful streak: 'weeping' and 'bell' in English, and a Japanese name that may hint at melancholy. It is a hungry, droopy, faintly gloomy little plant, which is exactly why it sticks in the memory.

Spin-offs & cameos

Super Smash Bros.

Weepinbell makes a cameo in the opening movie of Super Smash Bros. Melee (2001), as one of many Pokémon that pop up.

Pokémon GO

Weepinbell has been dangling about in Pokémon GO since launch day on 6 July 2016. It evolves from Bellsprout for 25 Bellsprout Candy and into Victreebel for 100, and it walks with you as a 3 km buddy. Shadow Weepinbell arrived on 7 November 2019, and Shiny Weepinbell became obtainable on 17 July 2020, when Shiny Bellsprout began appearing during Pokémon GO Fest 2020. It was a three-star raid boss from 16 to 23 August 2023, and it headlined the four-star raids that followed Bellsprout Community Day on 20 April 2024. Its moves have shifted over the years: Razor Leaf was dropped as a Fast Attack on 16 February 2017, when Bullet Seed was added, so Razor Leaf is now an Elite move; its regular line-up is Bullet Seed and Acid, plus Power Whip, Sludge Bomb and Seed Bomb.

Pokédex entry

Weepinbell is number 022 in Pokopia's Pokédex, sitting between Bellsprout and Victreebel.

Moves

Red and Blue's Weepinbell was a pitcher plant with a short, sharp list: Vine Whip, Growth and Wrap from the start, then PoisonPowder, Sleep Powder and Stun Spore, Acid at 29, Razor Leaf at 38 and a level-49 Slam. Gold and Silver tucked the sickly-sweet Sweet Scent into the middle, and Diamond and Pearl added Knock Off and the aptly gooey Gastro Acid before capping it all with Wring Out, while the physical/special split turned Acid special and Razor Leaf physical.

Sun and Moon finally handed it Poison Jab, and Let's Go trimmed the list back to its essentials. Weepinbell skipped Sword and Shield and Legends: Arceus, returned in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, and reached Scarlet and Violet with The Teal Mask, where a level-58 Power Whip replaces Wring Out. Legends: Z-A reinvents it again with Toxic Spikes, Leech Life, Sludge Wave and a level-48 Leaf Storm. Along the way it collected a few curiosities, such as Morning Sun from a Shadow Weepinbell in Pokémon XD and Lovely Kiss from an event Bellsprout.

Signature moves

GrassVine Whip

Weepinbell's oldest trick: every one of its level-up lists, from Red and Blue to Legends: Z-A, starts with this lash. It hit for 35 until X and Y raised it to 45, and its PP grew from 10 to 25 along the way.

NormalWrap

The flycatcher's squeeze. A starting move in every main-series list from Red and Blue to Scarlet and Violet, and until Scarlet and Violet it was learnt a second time too: at 13 in Red and Blue, 11 from Gold and Silver on and 8 in Let's Go.

GrassSleep Powder

One of the three powders, with Poison Powder and Stun Spore, found in every Weepinbell level-up list. It comes at 18 in Red and Blue, 15 in Gold and Silver and 13 in nearly every game since Diamond and Pearl, Legends: Z-A included.

PoisonAcid

The dripping half of its Grass/Poison typing: learnt at 29 in Red and Blue and at 23 or 24 in most games since, while Let's Go teaches it from the start and again at 12. It counted as a physical attack until Diamond and Pearl made it special, and Legends: Z-A leaves it out.

GrassRazor Leaf

Like Vine Whip, it is in every Weepinbell list from Red and Blue to Legends: Z-A: level 38 at first, 44 in Sun and Moon and Scarlet and Violet, and a speedy 10 in Legends: Z-A. It started out special and turned physical in Diamond and Pearl.

PoisonPoison Jab

A venomous stab that arrived in Sun and Moon as both a level-47 move and TM84. It has been in every list since, from level 36 in Let's Go to 30 in Legends: Z-A, and is a TM in each of those games too.

GrassPower Whip

The big vine. An egg move from Black and White to Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, passed down by Tangela, Tangrowth and Carnivine, it became Weepinbell's level-58 finale in Scarlet and Violet and is learnt at 44 in Legends: Z-A.

Complete learnsets

Generation I · Red, Green, Blue & Yellow10 level-up · 14 TM/HM

In Red, Green, Blue and Yellow Weepinbell has a single shared level list. It grows wild on Routes 12 to 15 in the international Blue and in Yellow, which adds Cerulean Cave, while Red and the Japanese Blue have none to catch. It starts with Vine Whip, Growth and Wrap, learns Wrap again at 13, works through PoisonPowder (15), Sleep Powder (18) and Stun Spore (23), and then hits harder with Acid at 29, Razor Leaf at 38 and a level-49 Slam. Its 13 TMs and HM01 Cut include Swords Dance, Mega Drain, SolarBeam, Reflect and Double-Edge. Move categories still follow type here, so Acid counts as physical while Vine Whip and Razor Leaf are special. Flash, Leech Life and Lovely Kiss, all learnable in Gold and Silver, can come back through the Time Capsule.

Diamond and Pearl have Weepinbell on Routes 224, 229 and 230 and Platinum on Routes 224 and 230, while HeartGold and SoulSilver bring back Routes 24, 25 and 44 and add the Swamp area of the Johto Safari Zone; it also turns up in Pal Park's Forest area and on the Pokéwalker's Treehouse route. The physical/special split makes Acid special and Vine Whip and Razor Leaf physical. The level list gains Knock Off (27), Gastro Acid (35) and a level-47 Wring Out finale, with Razor Leaf at 39 and Slam at 41. The 26 TMs and HM01 Cut add Energy Ball, Grass Knot, Natural Gift and Captivate, and Swords Dance is a TM again. Tickle and Worry Seed are new egg moves, with Weather Ball from Roserade in HeartGold and SoulSilver only. Platinum and HeartGold/SoulSilver tutors teach Gastro Acid, Knock Off, Seed Bomb, Snore, Sucker Punch and Synthesis, and HeartGold and SoulSilver add Worry Seed.

Unova has no wild Weepinbell: in White it comes from evolving a Bellsprout, and Black, Black 2 and White 2 have none at all. The level list is unchanged from Diamond and Pearl, though Wrap's accuracy rises to 90. Venoshock and Round are new TMs and Reflect is a TM once more, while Bullet Seed and the now 75-power Giga Drain become egg moves alongside newcomers Clear Smog, Natural Gift and Power Whip, for 13 in all. Black 2 and White 2 tutors teach ten moves, including Bind and Bug Bite. A Bellsprout from the Pokémon Dream World can arrive knowing Seed Bomb and keeps it when it evolves.

Both pairs share one level list, the same as before, but Vine Whip now hits for 45 with 25 PP and Knock Off for 65. Infestation, Nature Power and Confide join the TM list, and Secret Power is TM94 in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire only. Acid Spray (from Ferroseed) and Belch (from Cacnea) are new egg moves, both needing chain breeding, and every tutor move is an Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire extra.

In Sun and Moon Weepinbell comes from evolving a Bellsprout, while Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon have none to find. Poison Jab arrives, at level 47 and as TM84, pushing Slam to 54 and Wring Out to a level-58 finale. With HMs gone, Cut and Flash become transfer-only moves. Strength Sap is an egg move in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon only, and the now 80-power Leech Life can only come from a parent that learned it in an earlier generation. Generation VIII · Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl (not in Sword & Shield or Legends: Arceus)15 level-up · 22 TM/HM · 13 egg

Weepinbell sits out Sword and Shield entirely, and Legends: Arceus too, so Generation VIII means Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl: Routes 224, 229 and 230, plus the Grand Underground's caves once you have the National Pokédex. The level list follows Sun and Moon but drops Wring Out, leaving Slam at 54 as the finale. Its 22 TMs bring back Bullet Seed, Giga Drain, Cut (TM93) and Flash, though Toxic is not among them. Of the 13 egg moves, Acid Spray, Clear Smog, Leech Life and Strength Sap can only come from a Bellsprout, Weepinbell or Victreebel found in the Grand Underground already knowing them, while Belch and Encore need chain breeding. There are no tutor moves.

Generation IX · Scarlet & Violet (Version 2.0.1+ / The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero)14 level-up · 37 TM/HM · 7 egg

Weepinbell joined Scarlet and Violet with Version 2.0.1, so any copy can trade for one, and with The Teal Mask, the first part of The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero, it grows wild at Kitakami's Mossfell Confluence and appears in 3★ Tera Raid Battles there. The level list drops the repeat Growth and Wrap, and Power Whip becomes a level-58 finale, the slot Wring Out held in Sun and Moon. The 37 TMs range from Trailblaze, Pounce and Lunge to Leaf Storm, Grassy Glide, Sludge Wave and Tera Blast, and old egg moves such as Acid Spray, Encore, Leech Life, Magical Leaf and Weather Ball are TMs now. Sucker Punch is a new egg move, Tickle needs chain breeding through Lotad, and Strength Sap can only be copied with a Mirror Herb.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A (incl. Mega Dimension)16 level-up · 17 TM/HM

Weepinbell lives in Lumiose City's Rouge District and Wild Zone 13, and with the Mega Dimension DLC in the 3★ and 4★ Grass- and Poison-type wild zones of Hyperspace Lumiose. Legends: Z-A tables work differently: each move shows the level it is learned (Learn), the level it becomes a Plus Move (Plus), its power and its cooldown (CD), with no accuracy or PP. The list is new: Wrap, Acid, Slam, Sweet Scent and Gastro Acid are gone, and Infestation, Magical Leaf, Toxic Spikes, Leech Life, Sludge Wave, Power Whip and a level-48 Leaf Storm arrive, with Lunge available only from the Move Reminder. Growth is Grass-type here, and Bullet Seed (15), Trailblaze (40) and Seed Bomb (35) have their own power values. Its 17 TMs include Toxic Spikes and Acid Spray. There is no breeding and there are no tutors.

Weepinbell in the anime

Debut EP009The School of Hard Knocks · First major role EP026Pokémon Scent-sation! · Its appearances on screen, and 5 other trainers who raised one.

Weepinbell has never travelled with Ash, yet it keeps turning up at the moments that matter. Its very first appearance saw a Pokémon Tech student's Weepinbell flattened by a single Water Gun from Misty's Starmie, and Erika chose one to take on Charmander at the Celadon Gym, only for Flamethrower to turn its Razor Leaf into a hail of fireballs. Kalos evened the score: Ramos's Weepinbell poisoned and beat both Fletchinder and Hawlucha before Frogadier's Aerial Ace finally broke through.

Its starring role, though, belongs to Team Rocket. James's first Weepinbell went into Butch and Cassidy's dodgy breeding centre and came out as the head-hugging Victreebel that stayed at his side through the Orange Islands and Johto. Years later the Magikarp salesman swapped that Victreebel for a second Weepinbell, which promptly evolved, swallowed Jessie and went off into the forest with its lovestruck predecessor. Elsewhere, Weepinbell have dressed up as Sunkern and squabbled with the Oddish family at Professor Oak's Laboratory – and one even needed help to get a Voltorb out of its mouth.

First seen: EP057The Breeding Center Secret
Evolved: EP057The Breeding Center Secret

James caught his first Weepinbell off-screen during his travels in Kanto, then left it at a breeding centre without realising the place was a scam run by Butch and Cassidy. When he came back for it in The Breeding Center Secret, it had already evolved into Victreebel, which greeted him by wrapping itself around his head – the start of a long-running gag of James's Pokémon attacking their Trainer the moment they are sent out (EP057). As Victreebel it became James's main battler in the Orange Islands and stayed with him through Johto, until the Magikarp salesman talked Jessie and Meowth into trading it away for another Weepinbell (EP261).

First seen: EP261Here's Lookin' at You, Elekid
Evolved: EP261Here's Lookin' at You, Elekid

When Team Rocket crash-landed on the Magikarp salesman, he offered them a Weepinbell that knew Sweet Scent, convincing Jessie and Meowth that it was just the thing for catching Pokémon. They made James trade away his Victreebel for it, leaving him heartbroken, but the Sweet Scent worked – Elekid, Larvitar, Casey's Meganium and Pikachu all came running. In the battle that followed, Weepinbell knocked out Phanpy with Vine Whip, then evolved into Victreebel without a Leaf Stone and swallowed Jessie. Once free, Jessie had Arbok send it flying; in mid-air it met James's old Victreebel, which the salesman had just kicked away, and the two fell in love and went off into the forest together.

Ramos's Weepinbell
Ramos
Gym Leader (Coumarine Gym)
Weepinbell

First seen: XY058The Green, Green Grass Types of Home!

Ramos's Weepinbell was the middle act of his Coumarine Gym battle with Ash, and it very nearly stole the show. Despite a type disadvantage against both Fletchinder and Hawlucha, it dodged Flame Charge and High Jump Kick, poisoned both with Poison Powder and beat each of them with Slam – Hawlucha only after a Razor Leaf, Slam and Grass Knot combination. Frogadier finally found the answer, shielding itself from Poison Powder with a gas mask made of Frubbles and smashing through Grass Knot with Aerial Ace. Ash went on to beat Gogoat and win the Plant Badge.

Erika's Weepinbell
Erika
Gym Leader (Celadon Gym)
Weepinbell

First seen: EP026Pokémon Scent-sation!

Erika's Weepinbell fought the second round of her three-on-three match with Ash, after Tangela had paralysed Bulbasaur. It opened with Razor Leaf, but Charmander's Flamethrower set the leaves alight and sent them flying back as fireballs, and while Weepinbell was busy dodging, Skull Bash knocked it out. It turns up again in a flashback in Bad to the Bone, losing a Gym battle to Otoshi's Marowak (EP073). The Celadon Gym keeps a second Weepinbell too: it sits beside one of Erika's Gloom while a caretaker wipes the Gloom's drool, and is recalled to its Poké Ball when the Gym catches fire.

Joe
student at Pokémon Tech (Indigo League)
Weepinbell

First seen: EP009The School of Hard Knocks

Joe was a Pokémon Tech student who had studied Misty's Gym on the school's battle simulator and boasted that he was stronger than a Trainer with two Badges. Stung, Misty demanded a real battle, and Joe sent out Weepinbell, sure his Grass type had the edge over her Water Pokémon. Starmie knocked it out with a single Water Gun – a move Weepinbell actually resists – and Giselle scolded Joe for forgetting how much real battle experience counts.

Ash & Weepinbell

Ash has never owned a Weepinbell, but he has had to find a way past several. At the Celadon Gym, Charmander turned Erika's Razor Leaf into a shower of fireballs and finished her Weepinbell with Skull Bash (EP026). In Johto, James's brand-new Weepinbell knocked out Phanpy with Vine Whip, then evolved on the spot and swallowed Jessie (EP261). And at the Coumarine Gym, Ramos's Weepinbell poisoned and beat both Fletchinder and Hawlucha before Frogadier's Aerial Ace finally brought it down (XY058).

Anime trivia

  • Joe boasted that his Grass-type Weepinbell had a clear advantage over Misty's Starmie (EP009) – but Starmie's Psychic type is also strong against Weepinbell's Poison type, so in truth both sides held a type advantage.
  • James's first Weepinbell evolved off-screen: he left it at Butch and Cassidy's breeding centre and got it back as a Victreebel (EP057).
  • Weepinbell normally needs a Leaf Stone to evolve, yet James's second Weepinbell became a Victreebel in the middle of a battle without one (EP261).
  • Weepinbell is one of several Valencia Island Pokémon, Paras among them, shown with unusual local colouring in Poké Ball Peril (EP083).
  • In Grass Hysteria! (AG073), the Forbidden Forest's Weepinbell are drawn well below their official 1 m: an aggressive one is no taller than a Gloom, and others fleeing Team Rocket stand just 0.4 m (1'03") tall.
  • Professor Oak's Pokémon Lecture after A Dairy Tale Ending (EP159) is devoted to Weepinbell. His senryū reads 'Mitemitai, kuchi wo musunda Utsudon wo' – 'I want to see a Weepinbell with its lips pursed.'
  • The English dub of All Dressed Up With Somewhere To Go! (DP033) reuses old 4Kids-era recordings of Eric Stuart for Weepinbell's voice.

“Weepinbell, the Flycatcher Pokémon. Weepinbell looks like a plant and covers opponents with a poisonous powder in order to catch them.”

Weepinbell in the movies

and 1 special featuring Weepinbell.

Weepinbell hasn't had a real part in a Pokémon film. Weepinbell are in the casts of the Pikachu shorts Pikachu's Vacation (1998) and Pikachu's Rescue Adventure (1999) and of the films The Power of One (1999) and I Choose You! (2017), but none of them gives it a scene of its own. Away from the TV series, a Weepinbell strolls past the Pichu Brothers' rooftop lookout clutching an invitation to Meowth's party in the Pokémon Channel special Pichu Bros. in Party Panic (2003).

TV specials

  • Pichu Bros. in Party Panic (2003)
This Pokémon Channel special opens with a mystery: Smoochum has spotted Pokémon carrying crescent-shaped cards with food drawn in the middle. The Pichu Brothers and their friends Magby, Teddiursa and Wooper head up onto a rooftop to keep watch, and down below a Weepinbell strolls past with a Magmar, cards in hand. The cards turn out to be invitations to a party Meowth is throwing, and only invited guests get the fruit.

Weepinbell in the Pokémon TCG

19 cards since 1999, oldest first. Tap any card to see it full size.

Weepinbell first sprouted in Japan's Pokémon Jungle expansion in March 1997 and reached English players in Jungle in June 1999. Since then it has turned up wherever Bellsprout and Victreebel go, with 15 English artworks so far, each a Stage 1 Grass Pokémon bridging the gap between seedling and pitcher plant. Its moves stay true to its Pokédex lore, so expect poison powder, slicing leaves and plenty of acid. Over the years it has Burned, Poisoned and lulled foes to sleep, and even dissolved their Energy. Erika has put her name to three of them: two in Gym Heroes in 2000 and one in Ascended Heroes in 2026. Its HP has crept up from 70 on its debut to 90 today, and in Battle Styles it gained an Ability, Dangerous Mucus. It's a dependable middle stage, not a superstar.

The art has changed just as much. Kagemaru Himeno's 1999 painting even slipped a real-world bird into the scene, and Japan's vending-machine sheet added a one-off card by Yukiko Baba. Ken Sugimori and Atsuko Nishida drew Erika's original pair. Miki Tanaka has drawn it twice, once for Aquapolis in 2003 and again for Celestial Storm in 2018. The 2003 art came back again in Pokémon TCG Pocket's Genetic Apex. Modern sets brought fresh styles from Mizue, Mina Nakai, otumami, Shibuzoh. and Jerky, the last of these in the nostalgic 151 set. Most recently, LINNE drew a brand-new Erika's Weepinbell, and Pocket's Mega Rising added a gleaming Shiny version by MAHOU.

  • Jungle 48/64 — Weepinbell's original card, painted by Kagemaru Himeno, with a real-world bird sitting on it.
  • Gym Heroes 48/132 (Erika's Weepinbell) — Flytrap pulls an opponent's Benched Pokémon into the Active Spot and then bites it, just like a flycatcher.
  • Aquapolis 65/147 → Celestial Storm 2/168 — Miki Tanaka drew Weepinbell twice with the same two attacks, for Aquapolis and Celestial Storm. The 2003 art came back again in TCG Pocket's Genetic Apex.
  • Triumphant 53/102 — Corrode Target asks you to 'Filp' a coin: a typo on the English print.
  • Battle Styles 002/163 — A Weepinbell with an Ability: Dangerous Mucus Burns and Poisons the opposing Active Pokémon the moment it evolves.
  • Ascended Heroes 005/217 (Erika's Weepinbell) — Erika's Weepinbell is back, now drawn by LINNE and printed in two Mirror Holofoil versions, one with Grass Energy symbols and one with Poké Balls.

Weepinbell in manga, books & other media

From the earliest manga to story books and songs.

In print, Weepinbell is at its best when it gets to be a little sinister. Its Pokémon Adventures debut, A Hollow Victreebel, has a crowd of Bellsprout and Weepinbell cheering as Red is strung up to feed their Evolution ceremony deep in the Safari Zone, until a blast on the Poké Flute wakes the sleepers and Red escapes with a bagful of new catches. Years later the Diamond & Pearl chapters named a chapter after it, Well Met, Weepinbell, in which the Berlitz family butler's trusty Weepinbell uses Gastro Acid to switch off a Lickilicky's Own Tempo, the first half of a neat tag-team trick. Magical Pokémon Journey made a gang of Weepinbell the henchmen of a lovesick Prince Sudowoodo in Pikachu and Clefairy's superhero dream. On the bookshelf, the 1999 story book of Pokémon Snap has Todd knock a Weepinbell into a pool to make it evolve into Victreebel.

Manga

'A Hollow Victreebel' (PS022), the Pokémon Adventures chapter where Bellsprout and Weepinbell gather for an Evolution ceremony in the Safari Zone
Pokémon AdventuresWild, at a Victreebel's Evolution ceremony (several later caught by Red) · PS022 'A Hollow Victreebel' / volume 2 · 1997Weepinbell's Pokémon Adventures debut is a jungle horror story. Deep in the Safari Zone, a Victreebel carries off Red and Pidgebot, one of the park's robot Pidgey tour guides, and hangs Red upside down beside its other captives: they are to be food for an Evolution ceremony, and the waiting Bellsprout and Weepinbell cheer at the new arrival. The young Pokémon evolve in their sleep, so Pidgebot plays the Poké Flute to wake them and ruin the ritual, and Red slips free with the help of a Poké Doll. By the next morning he rides back to the search party on a Nidoking with a whole haul of new catches, Weepinbell among them. In English the chapter first appeared in VIZ's monthly comic Mission: Magmar in May 2000.
'Pikachu and Clefairy's Heroic Tales' (PPP45), the Magical Pokémon Journey dream in which Prince Sudowoodo's Weepinbell kidnap Princess Bellossom
Magical Pokémon JourneyPrince Sudowoodo of the Stone Kingdom (a gang of Weepinbell) · PPP45 'Pikachu and Clefairy's Heroic Tales' / volume 8Yumi Tsukirino's comedy casts a gang of Weepinbell as the villain's henchmen, if only in a dream. When Weepinbell chase Princess Bellossom of the Flower Kingdom, Pikachu and Clefairy hear her cries, and the Hero Stars turn the pair into superheroes to fight the attackers off. The Weepinbell are working for Prince Sudowoodo of the Stone Kingdom, who wants to marry the princess, and one of them still manages to snatch her away. A Weepinbell later explains that the prince is simply in love with her. The heroes track down the Stone Kingdom and beat the prince and his underlings, he apologises, and Bellossom suggests they start as friends. Then Pikachu and Clefairy wake up at Grandpa's house, where the real cry for help comes from a smelly Gloom.
'Well Met, Weepinbell' (PS392), in which Sebastian's Weepinbell takes on Diamond
Pokémon AdventuresSebastian, the Berlitz family's butler · PS392 'Well Met, Weepinbell' / volume 35 · 2010The Diamond & Pearl chapters gave Weepinbell a chapter title of its own, and a job: it is the main battler of Sebastian, the butler of the Berlitz family. When Diamond tumbles over the wall of the Berlitz Estate in Sandgem Town and, taking the garden for a park, settles down to a picnic, Sebastian treats him as an intruder and sends Weepinbell in. Its Gastro Acid is a crafty opener: it switches off the Own Tempo Ability of Diamond's Lickilicky, Kit, so when two Chinchou follow up with Water Pulse, the confused Kit knocks over Diamond and his own team. Once Diamond explains that he is Platinum's friend, the apologies follow, along with a meal for his Pokémon. Weepinbell is far less help against the swarm of Yanmega that strikes next, going down easily to their Slash.

Weepinbell trivia

Name origins, design secrets and the facts that make Weepinbell such a fan favourite.

What’s in a name?

Weepinbell's English name is a neat little pun: 'weeping' plus 'bell', a perfect fit for a droopy, bell-shaped plant. Its Japanese name, Utsudon, may come from 靫葛 utsubokazura, the Japanese word for the pitcher plant, and may also carry 鬱 utsu, meaning depression or melancholy, so both names share a faintly mournful mood. Other languages take it in different directions: French Boustiflor mixes boustifaille, slang for a feast or food in general, with flore (flora); German Ultrigaria comes from Utricularia, the bladderworts; and Chinese 口呆花 combines 'mouth', 'simple-minded' and 'flower', with a nod in Mandarin to 口袋 kǒudài, 'pocket'. Spanish, Italian and Brazilian Portuguese simply keep the English name.

Design origins

Weepinbell looks like a carnivorous pitcher plant brought to life. The plump, bell-shaped body is the pitcher, the wide pink-lipped mouth its opening, and the acid sloshing inside echoes the digestive fluid real pitcher plants use to break down the insects that tumble in. Atsuko Nishida designed it, along with Bellsprout and Victreebel. Development held a surprise: in the Spaceworld '97 demo of Gold and Silver, Weepinbell appears to have had an alternate evolution called Tsubomitto (ツボミット), reached with a Poison Stone, which never made it into the finished games.
