Synopsis
In Coumarine City, Team Rocket kidnap a lost Vanillite, its family buries the city in a blizzard, and a Grass-type expert named Ramos helps calm them before revealing that he is the city’s Gym Leader. Bonnie buys a Vanillite-shaped ice cream, and the shopkeeper explains that it was inspired by a lost Vanillite being cared for at the Pokémon Center. Team Rocket overhear and plan to steal it. Unaware of the monorail, the group hikes up a long hill, and Clemont’s malfunctioning “Easy-Peasy Mountain Climber” launches him through a gate into a pasture of Grass types, where angry Victreebel attack him. Their Trainer, an old man on a Gogoat named Ramos, accepts the group’s explanation and lets them cut across his ranch.
At the Pokémon Center, the shy Vanillite soon warms up and plays with Pikachu and Dedenne. While everyone prepares its food, Team Rocket, disguised as three Nurse Joys, grab Vanillite and run off up the hill. Its cries bring its family, a Vanillish and a Vanilluxe, whose Blizzard buries Coumarine City in snow. When the group catches up, the trio reveal themselves, and the two Ice types freeze them in a block of ice and turn on everyone else. Ash charges in, but Ramos’s Gogoat pulls him back with Vine Whip, and Ramos scolds him for always rushing head-on, advising him to take the side road sometimes. His Jumpluff uses Sunny Day and his many Sunflora fire a combined Solar Beam that melts the snow and calms the Vanilla family.
Team Rocket thaw out and unveil a giant Meowth robot whose “cold collector” capsules drain the three Ice types’ cold energy to power its attacks, which block Luxio, Pikachu and Fennekin; Clemont admires the machine’s engineering until Bonnie scolds him. Ramos’s Gogoat ties the robot down with Grass Knot and Leech Seed, Frogadier’s Cut and Pikachu’s Iron Tail free the captives, and a barrage of attacks destroys the mecha and blasts Team Rocket off. Vanillite returns to the mountains with its family. When Nurse Joy mentions Ramos’s name, Clemont finally realises who he is, and Ramos reveals that he is the Coumarine City Gym Leader, reminds Ash about taking the side road, and says he will be waiting for his challenge.
