Synopsis
Ash learns from Ramos to look past what is directly in front of him and wins the Plant Badge at the Coumarine Gym, his fourth, with Frogadier defeating Weepinbell and Gogoat. The morning begins with Serena dreaming of her Showcase debut, tripping on stage and tumbling out of bed; finding Ash already out jogging with Pikachu, she resolves to train just as hard. Ash and Clemont climb the giant tree that houses the Coumarine Gym, but Ramos postpones the match, serves tea and asks for help in his garden. Impatient, Ash rips out weeds wildly, and Ramos shows him tiny sprouts hidden beneath them, explaining that focusing only on what is right in front of you can make you miss what really matters.
Ash takes the lesson to heart, and the three-on-three battle begins, with Bonnie minding Goomy on the sidelines. Fletchinder opens against Jumpluff, which blocks Flame Charge with Cotton Guard and sets up Sunny Day so that its Chlorophyll Ability doubles its Speed. Fletchinder keeps using Flame Charge to build up its own Speed, and after a second Cotton Guard it lands the hit that knocks Jumpluff out. Weepinbell, also boosted by Chlorophyll, dodges the same tactic, poisons Fletchinder with Poison Powder and finishes it with Slam. Hawlucha’s Flying Press lands, but its High Jump Kick misses, and poisoned and slowed it is worn down by Razor Leaf, Slam and Grass Knot; its last High Jump Kick connects before a final Slam knocks it out.
Frogadier wears its frubbles as a mask against Poison Powder and breaks through Grass Knot with Aerial Ace to defeat Weepinbell. Ramos’s last Pokémon, Gogoat, clears Frogadier’s Double Team duplicates with Vine Whip, distracts it with one Razor Leaf before striking from above with another, heals itself with Horn Leech and saps Frogadier with Leech Seed. Ramos explains that Gogoat trusts him completely, and Ash, feeling the pressure, nearly loses heart until Pikachu cheers him on. When Gogoat surrounds Frogadier with a storm of Razor Leaf, Ash remembers Ramos’s lesson and tells Frogadier to ignore the leaves and look for Gogoat. A perfect Aerial Ace followed by Double Team and Water Pulse wins the match. Ramos presents the Plant Badge, Ash thanks him for the advice that inspired his strategy, and he reminds Serena that her first Pokémon Showcase is next.
