Some sets sell on their chase cards; Forbidden Light — the sixth Sun & Moon expansion, out in May 2018 — sold on a humble Stage 1 squid. Its headline attraction is Ultra Necrozma-GX, the “final boss” light-devouring form from the Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon games, but its lasting legacy is Malamar, a card that quietly reshaped the competitive format for over a year.

Thematically it’s a Kalos reunion wrapped in a prism. The Legendary trio of Xerneas, Yveltal and Zygarde all show up as GX, joined by Diancie, Volcanion and Kalos faces like Diantha and Lysandre — a nice hit of X&Y nostalgia for anyone who started there. The Prism Star (◆) mechanic from Ultra Prism carries on with five more one-per-deck specials.

On the collector side there’s a genuinely strong Rainbow Rare line-up — Lucario-GX and Greninja-GX lead the chase — and a fan-favourite Diantha full art. On the play side, it handed 2018 two of its defining engines. More on both below.

It’s a set that looks unassuming on the shelf and turns out to be one of the era’s more quietly important releases.

Necrozma’s Power Knows No Limits!

Taking the Pokémon world by surprise, Necrozma has absorbed a Legendary Pokémon and taken on a new form as Ultra Necrozma-GX! Other Pokémon gather to welcome this new light…or to resist it. Lucario-GX, Greninja-GX, Zygarde-GX, Yveltal-GX, Naganadel-GX, even Volcanion ♢ and the majestic Arceus ♢ must choose a side. — Official Pokémon TCG: Sun & Moon—Forbidden Light expansion description

Set Highlights: Ultra Necrozma Lights Up the Meta

Necrozma at full power. Forbidden Light built itself around Ultra Necrozma-GX (95/131), the fused super-form straight out of the climax of Pokémon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon. It headlined a set steeped in Kalos nostalgia, too — Zygarde-GX (73/131), Diancie, Volcanion and Lysandre all made the trip back from Generation VI.

Prism Stars in bloom. The diamond-marked Prism Star (◆) cards were still a fresh idea — introduced just one set earlier in Ultra Prism — and Forbidden Light leaned in hard with five of them: Volcanion ◆, Diancie ◆, Arceus ◆, the Lysandre ◆ Supporter and the Beast Energy ◆ Special Energy. Being “one per deck,” each added a neat deck-building puzzle: powerful, but you only ever got a single copy.

The deck that defined a season. The real story was Malamar (51/131). Its Psychic Recharge Ability quietly moved a Psychic Energy from your discard pile to a Benched Pokémon every turn, and that engine drove the Ultra Necrozma-GX / Malamar deck — “Photon Geyser” hitting for enormous numbers — into one of the most dominant archetypes of the entire 2018–19 season, all the way to the Worlds stage. Beast Ring (102/131) handed Ultra Beast decks their own late-game turbo button.

The flip side. Not everyone loved it. Malamar’s easy acceleration and Ultra Necrozma-GX’s one-shot ceiling had plenty of players grumbling that the format had bent itself around a single Psychic pairing — a complaint that trailed the deck for well over a year.

Forbidden Light Ultra Necrozma Elite Trainer Box

Boosters held the usual ten cards, and the English set shipped with four wrapper artworks — Ultra Necrozma, Naganadel, Zygarde and Greninja. A 36-pack booster box topped the range, with an Ultra Necrozma-GX Elite Trainer Box as the collector centrepiece and two theme decks for newcomers: Tropical Takedown (a Grass build) and Twilight Rogue (Fighting/Psychic). As with every modern set there’s no “1st Edition,” and it was printed in big numbers, so it’s easy to find sealed or as singles.

A Prism Star chase, East & West

As with the rest of the Sun & Moon run, the English Forbidden Light wasn’t a one-to-one port of a single Japanese pack. Japan got Forbidden Light (禁断の光) first, on March 2nd, 2018 — a compact expansion of 94 numbered cards. When it crossed over to the West on May 4th, 2018 it grew to 146 cards, folding in extra cards and a healthy run of secret rares to bulk out the English print.

The headline act survived the trip intact: Ultra Necrozma-GX is the card everyone remembers from Forbidden Light in both regions, and the Prism Star trio of Volcanion (◇), Diancie (◇) and Arceus (◇) gave collectors on both sides of the Pacific something to chase. The bigger English number mostly comes down to those extra secret-rare slots rather than a wildly different line-up.

Set List

The 146-card checklist runs 1–131 for the main set (Full Art GX and Supporters, plus the Prism Star cards, sit within that range), then 132–146 for the secret rares — the nine Rainbow Rare GX and six gold Trainer/Energy cards. Trainer and Energy cards carry no Energy type.

The Prism Star (◆) cards

The Prism Star (◆) cards

Five more of the one-per-deck ◆ specials landed here: Volcanion ◆, Diancie ◆, Arceus ◆, the Supporter Lysandre ◆ and Beast Energy ◆. Beast Energy ◆ in particular became a key piece of Ultra Beast decks — a single, powerful special Energy you spent carefully.

Diantha (Full Art) 130/131

A Kalos binder page

The Full Art Supporter line-up leans hard into X&Y nostalgia. Diantha is the standout chase, joined by the likes of Judge, Lady and the Ultra Recon Squad. For anyone who grew up on Kalos, it’s a lovely little reunion.

Energy Recycler (Gold Secret) 143/131

The gold secrets (141–146)

Deck-relevant as ever: Beast Ring, Energy Recycler, Mysterious Treasure and friends, rendered in gold. Energy Recycler is the surprise standout — a plain-looking Item that collectors rate more highly than you’d expect.

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards

The premium layer is the Rainbow Rare GX tier. Values move constantly, so treat this as a pecking order and check live sold and graded comps for the exact card.

Lucario-GX & Greninja-GX (Rainbow Rares)

Lucario-GX & Greninja-GX (Rainbow Rares)

The set’s two headline chases, and it’s all about fan-favourite Pokémon. The Lucario-GX rainbow is usually named the single most desirable card in Forbidden Light, with the Greninja-GX rainbow right behind — both wanted well beyond the competitive crowd.

Ultra Necrozma-GX

Ultra Necrozma-GX

The face of the set, wanted in every finish — regular, Full Art and Rainbow. It has the rare distinction of being both the marketing centrepiece and a genuine tournament staple, which keeps demand durable.

The rest of the chase

The full rainbow run — Dialga, Xerneas, Palkia, Yveltal, Zygarde and Naganadel — rounds out the premium tier, with Diantha’s Full Art the trainer collectors wanted most. Condition is everything on the textured rainbows, so clean high grades are scarce.

Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)

Malamar (51/131) — the engine that ran a format

Malamar (51/131) — the engine that ran a format

Don’t be fooled by the humble Stage 1. Malamar’s Psychic Recharge Ability let you attach a Psychic Energy from your discard pile to a Benched Pokémon once per turn — and with several Malamar in play, that’s several free Energy a turn, straight out of the bin. It turned the discard into a fuel tank and became the backbone of Psychic decks that dominated Standard well into 2019. Pound for pound, it’s one of the most influential engine cards of the whole Sun & Moon era.

Ultra Necrozma-GX (95/131) — Malamar’s partner

Ultra Necrozma-GX (95/131) — Malamar’s partner

The attacker that Malamar was born to feed. Photon Geyser discards all the basic Psychic Energy on Ultra Necrozma and hits for 80 more damage per card discarded — and thanks to Malamar refuelling every turn, that added up to devastating, often one-shot numbers off a tiny effective investment. The Malamar / Ultra Necrozma-GX deck was a genuine top-tier archetype of 2018.

Beast Ring (102/131) — rocket fuel for Ultra Beasts

Beast Ring (102/131) — rocket fuel for Ultra Beasts

A sneaky-powerful Item: while your opponent has exactly three or four Prizes left, Beast Ring searches two basic Energy straight onto an Ultra Beast. Because it’s an Item you can play several in a turn, it enabled explosive mid-game bursts for Buzzwole and Naganadel decks — the kind of turn that flips a game in one go.

Alongside them, Zygarde-GX gave Fighting decks an efficient attacker and Naganadel-GX became a long-serving Ultra Beast support piece well beyond this set.

Trivia & Pop Culture

The squid that ruled. It’s a lovely bit of TCG history that the most important card in a set headlined by a glowing legendary dragon turned out to be a Stage 1 Malamar. Engine cards rarely get the spotlight, but this one earned it.

A Kalos reunion. Forbidden Light doubles as an X&Y throwback — the Xerneas/Yveltal/Zygarde trio, Diancie, Volcanion, Diantha and Lysandre all turning up at once. It gave the set a nostalgic warmth beyond its Ultra Sun/Moon branding.

Art worth framing. Much of the set’s premium work came from the PLANETA studio — Ultra Necrozma-GX’s regular art by PLANETA_Otani, its rainbow by PLANETA_Igarashi — and Diantha’s full art remains a collector favourite. The next set, Celestial Storm, would keep the era rolling.

Straight out of the games. Ultra Necrozma-GX isn’t just cover-art flash — it’s lifted straight from the climax of 2017’s Pokémon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon. There, Necrozma hijacks the light of Solgaleo or Lunala and Ultra Bursts into Ultra Necrozma, the blinding dragon you battle deep in Ultra Megalopolis, unleashing its signature Z-Move ‘Light That Burns the Sky.’ The set’s whole ‘Forbidden Light’ theme — and Necrozma powering up by absorbing other Legendary Pokémon on the cards — comes straight out of that storyline.
