Black and White booster pack

Black & White, released on April 25, 2011, hit the reset button on the Pokémon TCG. Arriving right after the standalone Call of Legends closed out the previous era, it launched a brand-new series built around the fifth generation of video games — a fresh region, a fresh look, and a fresh set of rules to match.

Its 114-card base (plus a cheeky secret) drew almost entirely from the newly discovered Unova region, and it arrived alongside a genuine first for the franchise: an official way to play the card game online.

Let’s start with just how much changed.

Exciting New Discoveries, Powerful New Pokémon… More Epic Battles!

A new generation of Pokémon has arrived! The Pokémon Trading Card Game: Black & White expansion brings you a legion of over 70 new Pokémon from the newly explored Unova region, including the Legendary Reshiram and Zekrom, both featuring never-before-seen art that covers the ENTIRE card! The Pokémon TCG: Black & White expansion is your gateway to a bigger Pokémon world!

— official Black & White expansion blurb

A Clean Reboot

Black & White was a true generational reset. Out went the intricate mechanics of the previous era — the Pokémon Prime, the two-card LEGENDs, the LV.X toppers before them. In their place came a streamlined, modernised game with a brand-new card design: a lighter frame, repositioned evolution boxes and a fresh holofoil pattern that would define the look of Pokémon cards for years.

The biggest rules change was quiet but sweeping: the set introduced the Ability keyword, retiring the old “Poké-Power” and “Poké-Body” labels and folding both into one unified concept. Every card from here on would simply have an Ability.

And it debuted Full Art cards — secret-rare prints whose artwork spilled across the entire card, edge to edge. The two box legendaries led the charge: Reshiram and Zekrom each got a breathtaking Full Art treatment that the set’s own blurb proudly advertised.

Reshiram — Full Art (113/114)

Reshiram — Full Art (113/114)

The Legendary of Pokémon Black, rendered edge-to-edge in one of the set’s debut Full Art cards. On the table, Blue Flare hit for a mighty 120 (discarding two Fire Energy).

Zekrom — Full Art (114/114)

Zekrom — Full Art (114/114)

The Legendary of Pokémon White, and the other face of the Full Art debut. Its Bolt Strike thundered for 120 damage — at the cost of 40 recoil to itself.

Straight from the Unova Games

More than any set before it, Black & White was a direct port of its video games. It arrived hand-in-hand with Pokémon Black and Pokémon White, and its roster was almost entirely Generation V: over seventy Unova Pokémon making their card debut all at once. The tie-in ran right down to the mascots — Reshiram fronted Pokémon Black, Zekrom fronted Pokémon White, and here they were on the two cover cards.

Naturally, the three Unova starters took pride of place. Serperior (6) played support, its Royal Heal Ability quietly mending your whole team between turns. Emboar (20) was an engine, its Inferno Fandango Ability pouring Fire Energy onto your Pokémon as fast as you could draw it — the heart of the “ReshiBoar” decks that paired it with Reshiram. And Samurott (31) brought the pressure, sniping the Bench with Pike before crashing in with an 80-damage Surf.

Serperior (6/114)

Serperior (6/114)

The Grass starter’s final form, and a team medic. Its Royal Heal Ability removes 10 damage from each of your Pokémon between turns, keeping a whole board healthy.

Emboar (20/114)

Emboar (20/114)

The Fire starter as a powerhouse engine. Inferno Fandango attaches Fire Energy from your hand as often as you like — the accelerator behind the famous “ReshiBoar” pairing with Reshiram.

Samurott (31/114)

Samurott (31/114)

The Water starter, built to pressure. Pike snipes 30 onto a Benched Pokémon, and Surf crashes in for 80 — a flexible, aggressive attacker.

The TCG Goes Online

Black & White’s launch coincided with a milestone away from the tabletop: the arrival of the Pokémon Trading Card Game Online. For the first time, there was an official way to build decks, crack digital packs and battle other players through a browser and app — with the bridge between cardboard and screen being the code card, a slip tucked into booster packs that unlocked a digital copy of that same pack.

There’s a collector’s wrinkle worth knowing, though. The very first print run of Black & White base packs shipped without code cards — they only appeared in later reprints (you can spot a coded pack by the small red “Play Pokémon” logo on the back), and the next set, Emerging Powers, became the first to include them across the board. So Black & White is where the online era began, even if not every original pack carried the key.

Print Versions

Black & White came in four booster arts, led by the game mascots Reshiram and Zekrom alongside Zoroark and Zebstrika. Every pack was a shot at a Full Art legendary, one of the new-look holos, and — in later print runs — a code card for the online game.

Two more cards are worth singling out. Zoroark (71), the Illusion Fox, was a fan-favourite and a clever tactician: its Foul Play attack let it copy and use one of the Defending Pokémon’s own attacks, turning your opponent’s best weapon against them, while Nasty Plot fetched any card from your deck. It headlined its own decks for years.

And then there’s the set’s wink to the past. In a release built almost entirely from brand-new Unova Pokémon, a single familiar face was hidden as the final secret card: Pikachu (115/114). The lone non-Generation-V Pokémon in the set, it was a nostalgic Easter egg tucked behind a wall of newcomers.

The Illusion Fox, and a crafty attacker. Foul Play borrows and fires one of the Defending Pokémon’s own attacks, while Nasty Plot digs any card out of your deck.

Pikachu — Secret (115/114)

The set’s hidden Easter egg: the only non-Unova Pokémon in Black & White, tucked in as the final secret card amid a roster of Generation V debutants.

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards

Released April 2011, Black & White (BW1) launched the modern BW era with 114 cards plus a secret-rare Pikachu. The set has no Full Art Trainers, so collector value centers on the two Legendary Full Arts and scarce holo rares, where PSA 10 gem-mint copies command steep premiums over raw cards.

Pikachu

Pikachu (Secret Rare) (#115/114)

The set’s ultimate chase, this secret-rare Pikachu sits beyond the 114-card checklist and tops BW1 in value; PSA 10 gem-mint copies sell for roughly $3,480, while raw copies trade near $80.

Zekrom

Zekrom (Full Art) (#114/114)

One of the two Legendary Full Art ultra-rares and a marquee collector piece; PSA 10 copies fetch about $1,500, with ungraded copies around $80.

Reshiram

Reshiram (Full Art) (#113/114)

The other Legendary Full Art and the iconic BW1 chase alongside Zekrom; PSA 10 gem-mint copies bring roughly $1,300, while ungraded copies run near $65.

Reshiram

Reshiram (Holo Rare) (#26/114)

The standard holo of the box-art Legendary carries a surprisingly high graded premium thanks to a low PSA population; PSA 10 copies have sold for about $1,625.

Zekrom

Zekrom (Holo Rare) (#47/114)

The regular holo Zekrom is scarce in true gem-mint condition, pushing PSA 10 examples to roughly $1,590 despite modest raw prices near $80.

Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)

Black & White reset the 2011-2012 Modified format around powerful Basic Legendaries. Reshiram and Zekrom anchored aggressive ‘Big Basics’ decks, Emboar supplied explosive Fire acceleration, and reprinted staples like Professor Juniper and Pokémon Communication became core consistency cards.

Reshiram

Reshiram (ReshiBoar / ReshiPhlosion Fire Attacker)

This 130 HP Basic’s Blue Flare hit 120 for a discard of two Fire Energy, making it the era’s premier Fire attacker; paired with Emboar or Typhlosion Prime for re-fueling, it defined top-tier Fire decks.

Zekrom

Zekrom (Big Basics / ZPST Lightning Attacker)

Zekrom’s Bolt Strike dealt a huge 120 damage (with 40 recoil), and its 130 HP Basic frame made it the centerpiece of dominant ‘Big Basics’ Lightning decks like ZPST that raced to early knockouts.

Emboar

Emboar (Inferno Fandango Acceleration Engine)

Emboar’s Inferno Fandango Ability let you attach any number of Fire Energy from hand each turn, supplying the acceleration engine that powered the top-tier ReshiBoar archetype.

Professor Juniper

Professor Juniper (Draw Supporter Staple)

Juniper let players discard their hand and draw seven fresh cards, quickly becoming a universal max-count draw staple run in nearly every competitive deck of the format.

Pokémon Communication

Pokémon Communication (Consistency Search Trainer)

This reusable Item swaps a Pokémon from hand back into the deck to fetch any Pokémon, giving decks the consistency to reliably find attackers and setup Pokémon on demand.

Trivia

  • Black & White was the first set of the Black & White series, launching the Generation V TCG era in April 2011 alongside the Pokémon Black and White video games.
  • It introduced the Ability keyword, retiring the long-running Poké-Power and Poké-Body labels.
  • It debuted Full Art cards, with Reshiram and Zekrom’s artwork covering the entire card.
  • It coincided with the launch of the Pokémon Trading Card Game Online; code cards appeared only in later Black & White print runs, with Emerging Powers the first set to include them consistently.
  • Every Pokémon in the set hails from Generation V except a single secret-rare Pikachu (115/114).
