Synopsis

A swarm of mysterious, metal-eating Pokémon that stowed away on the ship from Poni Island causes chaos across Melemele Island, baffling the Pokémon School and Team Rocket alike. The little hex-nut-headed creatures come ashore at a boat shed, chew through metal fittings and melt a manhole cover, and one group tumbles into the sewers of Hau’oli City, where a timid Alolan Rattata plays dead before they scatter. Another group spots James, Meowth and Wobbuffet loading a box of nuts and bolts into the malasada van and sneaks inside. At Bewear’s den, Jessie raids the fridge and eats Meowth’s limited-edition Pudding à la mode, and the trio squabble over the dessert while the newcomers slip out of the box to explore. Elsewhere, more of the creatures try to melt a wild Magneton, which shocks them and floats off in a huff.

At the Pokémon School, the class is building a training machine designed by Sophocles. In the basement, the visitors wander into the Ultra Guardians’ base and are chased by Lusamine’s Clefable, then ride the elevator up into the classroom and hide in Sophocles’ toolbox. Lillie reaches in for a bolt and pulls out one of them, and it fires Flash Cannon when the students poke it. Rotom has no data, Professor Kukui has never seen anything like it, and Lillie suggests that it may be an undiscovered species. The creatures swarm a wrench, float and link together under Sophocles’ electromagnet, and are drawn to the green flame of Marowak’s fire dance until the heat drives them back. Back at Team Rocket’s base, the trio discover that their parts box, James’s bottle-cap collection and the base’s central machinery have all been melted.

When Jessie grabs one of the culprits, its Flash Cannon sends the trio fleeing. On a school window ledge, a Meltan napping beside Rowlet drops its hex nut, and Rowlet snatches it back from a thieving Murkrow. Team Rocket corner another group, but Mareanie smothers James instead of fighting, and Mimikyu refuses to try hard against anyone but Pikachu; the creatures’ combined Flash Cannon is blocked by Bewear, who scatters them with a shriek and carries the furious trio home. Pikachu spots the creatures climbing the bell tower, and when Komala strikes the bell their hex nuts spin in resonance, drawing the other group to join them. That evening Ash reports the discovery to Professor Oak and sends him Rotom’s data, unaware that one of the creatures has crept into his bag while the rest keep pestering Clefable in the basement.
