Synopsis
Professor Oak identifies the mystery Pokémon as Meltan, a new Steel-type species, and Ash catches the one that befriends his Rowlet. Oak calls Professor Kukui’s house to name the Hex Nut Pokémon, and the Meltan hiding in Ash’s backpack celebrates by melting the base of Professor Burnet’s frying pan. At school, Lusamine struggles to keep the wild Meltan from eating the Ultra Guardians’ equipment, while Kukui sets up practice battles. Ash leaves the sleeping Rowlet in his bag, and Meltan tries to wake it by spinning its head nut, which sends Rowlet flying out onto a balustrade. A Murkrow drawn by Meltan’s shine snatches it, and Rowlet chases the thief down and rescues its new friend, only to discover that Meltan’s hex nut has fallen off. Meanwhile, Team Rocket’s broken-down van is repaired with a nut that conveniently falls from the sky.
In the schoolyard, Torracat’s Fire Blast overwhelms Kiawe’s Marowak, Lycanroc’s Stone Edge breaks through Turtonator’s flames, and Pikachu’s Iron Tail clashes with Charizard’s Aerial Ace. When the bell ends the match, Kiawe asks what Ash plans to do now that he has finished the island challenge, but Ash is distracted by Rowlet flying past. In the basement, Clefable discovers that the Meltan can be tamed with pieces of metal. Rowlet searches for a replacement nut without success and lands, exhausted, on Team Rocket’s van, drawn by the smell of their Combee doughnuts. When Meowth lunges at it, the jolt dislodges Meltan’s hex nut from the engine and it flies back to its owner. Team Rocket recognise the “laser-faced metalheads” that wrecked their base, put on their costumes and recite their motto.
James tries to net Meltan, but Rowlet carries it into the air and leaves James with a huge bruise from Seed Bomb. Meowth dodges Razor Leaf and rakes Rowlet with Fury Swipes, and as he prepares to finish it, Meltan blocks the blow with its hex nut and blasts the trio with Flash Cannon. Bewear arrives with Stufful, piles everyone onto the van and carries it away. Ash finds Meltan protectively standing over the scratched Rowlet and is thrilled to meet it. Back at school, Clefable shows off the acrobatics of the tamed wild Meltan, and Rowlet leads its friend back to them, but Meltan keeps looking back. Ash offers it a place on his team; Meltan checks with Rowlet, which pecks the Poké Ball in approval, and after a ball wedges in its head, Ash catches Meltan on the second throw.
