Synopsis

Mallow’s travelling brother Ulu comes home to enter the Alola Bread Festival, and when his sweet Grepa Berries are lost, Mallow’s idea for a sour-Berry jam helps him win. Ash arrives at Aina’s Kitchen to a cloud of flour—Mallow’s father, Abe, has hurt his back preparing for the festival—just as Ulu walks in with his Lickitung, delighting Mallow. Ulu meets Ash, Rotom, Pikachu, Poipole and Mallow’s Steenee and announces that he will enter the festival, whose theme this year is bread that both people and Pokémon can eat and whose prize is a luxury cruise around Alola. When Nina comes in with her Alolan Raichu to collect a lunch order, Ulu drops to one knee to gaze at her, and after she says she is looking forward to his bread, he daydreams about marrying her. Team Rocket, spotting the festival poster, decide to enter too.

When Kiawe, Lana and Sophocles—old friends of Ulu—and the newcomer Lillie sample his bread, some find it sweet and others find it sour, because the Grepa Berries he used vary; Lickitung sorts them, to Kiawe’s annoyance at the timing. On festival day, the streets are lined with bakery stalls, and Team Rocket’s honey-glazed bagels draw a crowd, but Ulu’s stall is empty. Mallow explains that Ulu, flustered by Nina’s visit, sent all his sweet Grepa Berries flying into a Snorlax’s mouth, and without his key ingredient he has given up. Then Mallow remembers the sour Grepa Berries at Aina’s Kitchen and suggests a sour jam to pair with his bread. Kiawe’s Charizard fetches the Berries, and everyone helps: washing, kneading, heating pans with Turtonator’s flame and balancing the jam with Steenee’s Sweet Scent.

Spread over the loaves as a hot glaze, the jam draws Team Rocket’s customers away, and Ulu’s bread sells out quickly. Nina comes to thank Ulu for the delicious bread—and introduces her fiancé, a man who visited her shop every day, leaving Ulu stunned and his friends feeling sorry for him. When the participants are called to the stage, only Ulu and Steenee stay behind, and Steenee cheers him up. The judge announces that Ulu’s Alolan Jam Bread has won, and Mallow goes up to accept the golden trophy, shaped like a baguette in a chef’s hat. As she starts thanking her family and friends, she notices that Ulu is missing, and Steenee brings her a handwritten note: Ulu has decided to continue his training journey, and he and Lickitung are already on a ship sailing into the sunset.
