The Island Whisperer! is the 31st episode of Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon, the twentieth season of the Pokémon anime, and the 966th episode of the English dub overall (Japanese episode 971, Bulbapedia code SM031). It first aired in Japan on 22 June 2017 and in the United States on 16 September 2017. It falls within the season’s The Akala Island field trip stretch (EP31–EP37).
Synopsis
The class meets Olivia, the warm-hearted but clumsy kahuna of Akala Island, who takes them on a field trip to her island and helps rescue a Wailmer held captive by a Bruxish. Ash runs to school for the Akala Island field trip, and a startled Tauros knocks him flying before Kiawe’s Charizard restrains it. A woman jumps in, calms the Tauros and kisses it, then praises and kisses Charizard too; Kiawe introduces her as Olivia, Akala’s kahuna. In class Olivia trips over, then gives each student a jewel and shows Ash the Rockium Z on her Z-Ring, asking him about his island challenge, before colliding with Samson Oak at the door. Outside, the students show her their Pokémon, and all of them relax around her, even the wary Litten. Olivia weeps over Litten’s story, and when Lillie gives her a handkerchief, Olivia blows her nose on it.
In return Olivia describes Tapu Lele and its healing scales, and Ash realises this is what healed his injuries on Treasure Island. At the port Olivia trips again while boarding the cruiser. On the voyage Sophocles finds a guidebook photo of Kiawe with his family, and Mallow notices that Kiawe looks embarrassed. Lana spots something leaping from the water, and Kukui and Olivia take a detour to see a group of Dragonair, one of which uses Rain Dance. A crowd of Water-type Pokémon gathers, and a Slowpoke evolves into Slowbro when a Shellder bites its tail. Then Olivia falls overboard, and Ash and Pikachu dive in after her. Under the sea they find a Wailmer trapped among rocks, and Rotom alerts the boat. Olivia spots a Bruxish using its psychic power to hold the Wailmer down.
Olivia sends out her Midday Form Lycanroc, which, despite its weakness to Water, uses Accelerock on the cliff; falling rocks free the Wailmer, but the Bruxish keeps it sinking. The Bruxish startles the group with a loud noise, and Olivia’s Rock Slide drives it away. Ash, Olivia, Kiawe and Lana dive in with Popplio, which forms a balloon that lifts the Wailmer. Rotom reports that the Wailmer is weak, so Lillie fetches medicine and Mallow and Sophocles help keep the Wailmer afloat after the balloon pops. Olivia reassures the Wailmer and feeds it the medicine, breaking the lingering psychic effect, and it swims away happily. Kiawe praises Olivia, who promptly gets a cramp and falls into the sea again. The group finally reaches Akala Island and checks into the Pokémon Center, where Nurse Joy, Blissey and Comfey welcome them.
