Synopsis
Olivia runs a treasure hunt on the backs of Stoutland, in which Ash fails to catch an Alolan Geodude and Lana wins with a rare stone that will become her Z-Ring. In Paniola Town Olivia shows the class a barn full of Stoutland, famed for sniffing out hidden treasure, and Professor Kukui explains that they will ride them as Ride Pokémon in a treasure hunt. Lana chooses the surliest Stoutland of all, while Ash bonds with a friendly one that licks his face and reminds him of Litten’s old companion. Everyone must return when the bell rings. Ash and Kiawe set off first, as rivals for the best find; Mallow heads for the jungle and Sophocles sends his Stoutland to a rocky area. Lana’s Stoutland throws her off before finally setting out, and Lillie is too intimidated to climb onto hers. In the first round Ash’s Stoutland digs up Red, Blue and Green Shards.
Kiawe searches a coastal cliff, Mallow finds a Tiny Mushroom and a Big Mushroom, and Sophocles, learning that a meteor once broke apart over Akala, decides to hunt for its fragments, while Lana’s Stoutland stops to eat Sitrus Berries in an orchard. At the first appraisal Ash’s shards earn 15 points and Mallow’s mushrooms 20, Lana and Sophocles have nothing, and Kiawe’s Skull Fossil earns 100. In the second round Ash’s Stoutland finds only a Yellow Shard, and Lana’s Stoutland takes a nap. When Popplio offers to search for Lana, a wild Garbodor attacks it and breaks through its Bubble Beam, badly hurting it. Lana shields Popplio and her Stoutland, which wakes and defeats Garbodor with Giga Impact, and Lana finally rides it. Meanwhile Olivia and Kukui encourage Lillie, who remembers her wish to touch more Pokémon and resolves to ride.
Ash’s Stoutland stops at a boulder that turns out to be an Alolan Geodude, which Rotom identifies. Ash tries to catch it: Electro Ball has no effect, Iron Tail lands, but the Geodude’s Thunder Punch knocks the Poké Ball straight back into Ash’s face, and the Geodude escapes. Lana’s Stoutland leads her into a cave, so she returns last. At the final appraisal Ash’s Yellow Shard adds 5 points, Mallow’s large Lansat Berry earns 75, Sophocles’s Star Piece 150 and Kiawe’s Plume Fossil another 200. To the class’s amazement, Lillie arrives riding her Stoutland. Finally Olivia reveals Lana’s find: a Sparkling Stone, the ore used to make Z-Rings, worth 500 points. Lana wins the hunt, and Olivia promises to turn the stone into a Z-Ring for her.
