Synopsis
At a town’s Gourgeist Festival, Jessie trades her Pumpkaboo to a count whose Prince Pumpkaboo has fallen for it, but when the trade makes it evolve into Gourgeist she realises how much it means to her and trades it back. The group arrives to find townspeople and Pokémon in costume, even Nurse Joy and Wigglytuff, so Serena makes outfits for everyone: Ash goes as a Snorlax, Pikachu as a Psyduck, Bonnie as a Ludicolo, Clemont as a Watchog and Chespin as a Pikachu. Team Rocket dress up too, planning to grab Pikachu while the heroes are distracted. Learning from the children that trading treats is part of the festival, the group trades Serena’s homemade snacks for candy. Meanwhile three Gourgeist corner Team Rocket, and their owner, a steward, invites the trio to dinner at his master’s hilltop castle.
There Count Pumpka explains that his Prince Pumpkaboo has fallen for Jessie’s Pumpkaboo, which turns out to be a rare female of the Jumbo Variety. Seeing an opportunity, Jessie tells the Count that Ash’s group stole Pikachu and are after her Pumpkaboo, and he sends his steward into town. The steward’s Gourgeist overpower Pikachu, Pancham and Bunnelby and make off with a “Pikachu” under a Leech Seed smokescreen, only for the group to realise that the real Pikachu was left behind and that the costumed Chespin has been taken. At the castle, the Count demands that Jessie honour the deal and offers her a Mawile that can Mega Evolve. Jessie agrees, and her hurt Pumpkaboo floats over to the smitten Prince.
Ash’s group, tracking the trio with Fletchinder, demand Chespin back but are trapped in an electrified cage. The moment the trade is completed, Pumpkaboo evolves into Gourgeist, and the Prince, intimidated by its size, shows his displeasure. Jessie remembers how Pumpkaboo cared for her when she was sick and lonely; she and Gourgeist embrace in tears, and the disappointed Count trades it back. When Jessie claims that Chespin now belongs to them, Bonnie unmasks Inkay’s Pikachu costume and Meowth’s Banette disguise. Pikachu blocks Leech Seed with Iron Tail, Bunnelby’s Double Slap frees Chespin, and Flamethrower and Thunderbolt blast Team Rocket off. The apologetic Count invites the group to stay, and they eat soup from pumpkin bowls as fireworks end the festival.
