Synopsis

At the run-down Lost Hotel, a Rotom carries the group ten years into the past so that they can reverse the bet that cost the hotel’s founder his business, and Rotom changes forms to defeat the bully Mantle’s Krookodile. Sheltering from a storm, the group checks in with the clerk, Weston, and passes a flickering light he calls Rotom and a photo of the sneering owner, Mantle, with his Krookodile. In the hotel arena Ash finds Mantle defeating a guest’s Pangoro and claiming its Poké Ball as the stake of a bet. When Ash objects, Mantle offers to wager Pangoro against Pikachu; Ash refuses, and the gang closes in until a Rotom bursts out of a trash bin and covers their escape into a storeroom.

There Rotom uses a television to show what happened ten years earlier. On opening day Weston owned the hotel, until Mantle challenged him and threatened to take the guests’ Pokémon if he refused. Weston accepted, but his Rotom fled when Krookodile roared, so Mantle claimed victory and the hotel, Weston was demoted to clerk, and Rotom hid in shame. When the group wishes they could change the past, Rotom possesses the elevator, whose display counts down into strange negative basement floors, and carries them back to the moment of the challenge. Ash stops Mantle from declaring victory, since no battle has been fought, and promises to find Rotom. In the storeroom, Weston apologises to Rotom for agreeing to the battle so rashly.

Clemont notes that the Electric/Ghost Rotom is at a disadvantage against Ground/Dark Krookodile, but spots a washing machine and comes up with a plan. Electro Ball has no effect, and Rotom appears to flee into an outlet, but it returns as Wash Rotom with Hydro Pump; when Hyper Beam destroys the machine, it becomes Frost Rotom in a refrigerator and freezes Krookodile with Blizzard, and when Crunch wrecks that, it becomes Mow Rotom and knocks Krookodile out with Leaf Storm. Mantle tries to take the hotel by force, but a double Thunderbolt from Pikachu and Rotom defeats his gang. Weston poses for a photo with Ash, and Rotom returns everyone to the present, where the hotel is clean and elegant, Mantle and his friends work as clerks, and Weston celebrates its tenth anniversary. In the lobby an opening-day photo shows the group standing beside him.
