Synopsis

A weary Team Rocket run into the Magikarp salesman who has swindled them so many times, and James hurls the Magikarp he has just been handed straight back at him. Instead of a refund, the salesman offers the plans for an Evolution-inducing machine developed from the prototype of a bankrupt company, with a warning to wait a week after building it before switching it on. Back in Jubilife City on their way to Floaroma, Ash and Dawn are stopped by a TV crew who assume Ash, with his unevolved Pikachu, belongs to the B-Button League, a group of Coordinators who refuse to evolve their Pokémon and are famous for a powerful Magikarp and a Feebas. Curious, the friends visit its leaders, the sisters Haley and Oralie, and Croagunk stops Brock’s flirting with Poison Jab.

Haley raises a pool by remote control to show off Oralie’s Magikarp and her own Feebas, and the sisters explain their belief that Pokémon can be strong without evolving. Team Rocket arrive disguised as researchers from a “C-Button League”. Dawn tests the Magikarp’s skill in the water first: it dodges Peck underwater, swats away Bubble Beam and bounces Piplup off the walls and ceiling with Tackle until it faints. Pikachu’s Thunderbolt misses as the Magikarp spins out of the way, Tackle throws Pikachu against the pool’s edge, and when Iron Tail meets Tackle, the explosion drops both into the water, where they surface exhausted. As the sisters turn away to fetch lunch, Team Rocket drop their disguises, snatch Magikarp and Feebas and fly off in their balloon.

Staravia tails the balloon to a riverside cabin where the trio have built their machine. Haley and Oralie protest that evolution would undo all their training, but Pikachu is trapped in a capsule and the group under a cage. The machine fails to evolve the Magikarp twice, then fails to turn Pikachu into a Raichu, and James and Meowth realise the salesman’s one-week warning was genuine. While the trio argue, Pikachu breaks the cage with Iron Tail, and Meowth’s last resort turns the machine into a giant robot that smashes the cabin, then crumbles into dust because it needs a successful evolution to work. Magikarp’s Tackle, Feebas’s Ice Beam and Pikachu’s Thunderbolt blast Team Rocket away, and the friends return the prized Pokémon to the B-Button League before heading on toward Floaroma Town.
