Synopsis

On the road to Floaroma Town, Dawn falls instantly for a wild Pachirisu chasing its own tail. Piplup’s Peck is answered with Sweet Kiss, leaving it confused, and Buneary’s Dizzy Punch and Ice Beam are met with Spark and nimble dodging, until Pachirisu unleashes a Discharge that zaps Buneary, the humans and Pikachu alike. The effort tires it out, Piplup lands a Bubble Beam and Dawn’s Poké Ball clicks shut. Meanwhile, Jessie is cheerfully preparing for the Floaroma Contest and wondering about a new Pokémon of her own. That night Dawn dreams of Contest glory with her new partner, but the next morning Pachirisu zips about, dodges its recall beam and gives Dawn a static shock that leaves her hair standing on end. Piplup and Buneary chase it until they collapse from exhaustion, while Pachirisu plays happily with Buneary’s ear.

Ash and Brock offer to help, but Pachirisu treats the hunt as a game. It lets Pikachu get close before pulling away, runs rings around Turtwig, Staravia and Aipom, and slips out of a pile-up that leaves the pursuers in a heap. Cornered at last on a cliff edge, it fires a Discharge that knocks out everyone except Pikachu, then laughs and faints from fatigue, giving Dawn one more shock as she picks it up. Doubting she can ever control it, a gloomy Dawn takes Pachirisu into a field, lets it go and runs off. Ash and Brock urge her to reconsider, and while she wavers, Team Rocket find the free Pachirisu and Jessie decides to claim it. A cloud shaped like Pachirisu convinces Dawn she has made a mistake, and the friends rush back to look for it.

They arrive to find Jessie’s Poké Ball has already failed. When Ash protests that Pachirisu is Dawn’s, Team Rocket point out that she released it, and Jessie suggests letting it choose a Trainer, then cheats with a pile of food. Pachirisu dashes to Jessie, zaps her with Discharge, steals the food and walks over to Dawn. Team Rocket’s balloon then fires sticky gumballs that pin everyone down, and when Meowth sprays Pachirisu free with a “perfume”, it hops onto Jessie’s shoulder and flies off with the villains. Aboard the balloon, Pachirisu bides its time before a Discharge destroys the balloon and blasts Team Rocket away. It returns carrying the spray in its mouth, nestles against Dawn as her hair rises with static, and willingly enters her Poké Ball, caught for the second time. With a new teammate, Dawn sets her sights on her first Ribbon in Floaroma Town.
