The Joy of Water Pokémon is the 49th episode of Pokémon: Johto League Champions, the fourth season of the Pokémon anime, and the 206th episode of the English dub overall (Japanese episode 208, Bulbapedia code EP206). It first aired in Japan on 12 July 2001 and in the United States on 24 August 2002. It falls within the season’s Festivals, balloons & the first Gen III Pokémon stretch (EP201–EP207).
Synopsis
Misty is crushed to learn that the Nurse Joy who runs a famous Water-type Pokémon Center is terrified of Water types. At Lake Lucid, a diver in a full suit surfaces with a bandaged Goldeen: Nurse Joy, whose family restored the once-polluted lake. Misty idolises her, until Joy flinches from her Poké Balls and admits she only handles Water Pokémon inside the armoured suit.
Joy argues that feelings are irrelevant to good treatment and describes the therapies she hopes to publish; Misty retorts that nobody can understand Water types without loving them. As a child, Joy explains, a Remoraid squirted her into the lake and a swarm surrounded her, leaving a lifelong fear. Team Rocket, meanwhile, lose a duel with a real Tentacruel, whose Supersonic confuses the crew of their submarine.
The sub bursts into the Center’s pool, the trio perform a water-aerobics motto and tentacles seize Pikachu. James insists rubber will block Thunderbolt, Jessie points out they are soaking wet, and the mecha explodes, flinging them outside while debris shatters an injured Gyarados’s tank. With her suit washed away, Joy steels herself, calms the thrashing Gyarados with a touch to its crest and lets her Chansey fit a new cast. She still dislikes Water types, she admits, but a nurse does her job, and Misty’s respect returns.
