Fight for the Light is the 51st episode of Pokémon: Johto League Champions, the fourth season of the Pokémon anime, and the 208th episode of the English dub overall (Japanese episode 210, Bulbapedia code EP208). It first aired in Japan on 26 July 2001 and in the United States on 7 September 2002. It falls within the season’s Olivine & Cianwood: the Storm Badge stretch (EP208–EP209).
Synopsis
Ash reaches Olivine City only to find Gym Leader Jasmine nursing a sick Ampharos and unable to battle. Team Rocket, meanwhile, are turned away from the Battle Tower for lack of Gym Badges; bottle caps do not count. At the Gym, a girl claiming to be Jasmine battles Ash, her Onix shrugging off Totodile’s Water Gun and Tackling it out, before the real Jasmine interrupts: the impostor is her apprentice Janina, who has waxed Onix with water repellent and is expelled for cheating.
Brock finds Janina scrubbing off the wax and urges her to build on Onix’s strengths. Jasmine is at the old Shining Lighthouse with her grandfather Myron, tending Sparkle, the Ampharos whose tail once lit the coast; medicine awaits in Cianwood but nobody can fetch it. Team Rocket fire a “mystery missile” through the roof, Weezing’s Smokescreen pours out, and Brock and Sparkle are caged fleeing downstairs.
Janina spots the smoke and sends Onix after the balloon; it deflects Arbok’s Poison Sting, anchors itself to a sea wall and hauls on the dangling Arbok while Janina climbs up to break the lock. Onix being immune to electricity, Pikachu’s Thunderbolt fries the trio and Onix flings them away. Jasmine reinstates Janina and sends her for the medicine; Ash joins her on the Cianwood ferry, where another Gym awaits.
