EX Deoxys is the eighth expansion of the EX Series, released on February 14th, 2005 and known in Japan as Clash of the Blue Sky. Timed to the home-video launch of the seventh Pokémon film, Destiny Deoxys, this 108-card set puts the shape-shifting DNA Pokémon front and centre — and pits it against its movie rival, the sky-serpent Rayquaza.
Deoxys is everywhere here, appearing across the set in its Normal, Attack and Defense forms as both ordinary cards and Pokémon-ex — and, true to character, the Deoxys ex can literally shift shape mid-battle. Alongside them fly a strong cast of ex cards, from Rayquaza ex and Salamence ex to a secret Rocket’s Raikou ex.
But the card that made this set famous glitters gold. Rayquaza Star (107) — the Gold Star Rayquaza — is one of the single most coveted cards of the entire vintage era, a shiny emerald serpent that turns an EX Deoxys booster box into a genuine treasure hunt.
Two theme decks shipped alongside it, Starcharge (Grass/Psychic) and Jetstream (Fire/Water/Lightning). And with Deoxys finally arriving in cardboard, the set rounded out the Generation III roster that its predecessor EX Hidden Legends had left one Pokémon short of.
Reach a new, meteoric level of play!
The clash between Deoxys and Rayquaza comes to the card game — command the DNA Pokémon in all its forms.
— Original Pokémon USA promotional copy, 2005
Deoxys and Its Many Forms
Most Pokémon get one card per set. Deoxys got a whole wardrobe. The DNA Pokémon is famous in the games for switching between four Formes — Normal, Attack, Defense and Speed — each rebalancing its stats, and EX Deoxys leans all the way into that gimmick. Deoxys shows up again and again across the checklist in its Normal, Attack and Defense forms, as both regular holos and Pokémon-ex.
Better still, the cards actually behave like Deoxys. The Deoxys ex share a Poké-Power called Form Change: once a turn you can search your deck for a different Deoxys ex and swap it straight in — energy, damage and all — so your Deoxys can morph from a defensive wall into an all-out attacker mid-battle, exactly as it does in the video games. It’s one of the neatest bits of flavour-as-mechanic in the whole EX run.
The theme runs deeper than one Pokémon, too. The set is built around the Destiny Deoxys movie, which staged a spectacular showdown between Deoxys and Rayquaza — and the cards restage it, from Rayquaza ex right up to the glittering Gold Star Rayquaza. Land, sky and outer space, refought in a booster box. And with Deoxys itself finally printed, the mythical gap left open by EX Hidden Legends was closed at last, rounding out the Generation III cast in the trading card game.
Print Versions & Collectors Info
Boosters came in four artwork variants — the three Deoxys forms plus its rival Rayquaza — each holding nine cards. Two theme decks, Starcharge and Jetstream, rounded out the release.

Other Cards
You don’t have to pull an ex to enjoy the Forme theme — Deoxys turns up in its different shapes even in the regular holo slots, each with its own artwork.
Deoxys [Attack Forme] (17/107)
The aggressive shape — all offence and glass-cannon fragility, captured in its own dedicated card art. A lovely non-ex showcase of the Forme gimmick.
Deoxys [Defense Forme] (18/107)
The armoured, hunkered-down shape, printed as a separate card entirely — proof of how thoroughly the set commits to Deoxys’ many faces.
For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards
One card towers over everything else here — but the supporting cast of ex and a second Gold Star make EX Deoxys a deep, desirable set.
Rayquaza Star (107/107)
The crown jewel. Gold Star Rayquaza is one of the most iconic and valuable cards of the entire vintage era — a shiny emerald serpent that sits at the very top of many collectors’ wish lists.
Latios Star (106/107)
The set’s second Gold Star — the Eon dragon in shiny form, a superb and scarce chase card in its own right.
Rayquaza ex (102/107)
The standard-art sky legend, a powerful and popular ex and the movie’s co-star opposite Deoxys.
Deoxys ex [Normal Forme] (97/107)
The DNA Pokémon as an ex, headlining a trio of form variants and anchoring the set’s whole identity.
Salamence ex (103/107)
A fan-favourite pseudo-legendary dragon as an ex — a striking holo and a staple of the set’s chase line.
Rocket’s Raikou ex (108/107)
A secret rare that carries Team Rocket’s theme over from the previous set — a Dark-typed beast tucked past the end of the checklist.
Crobat ex (96/107)
A speedy poison attacker to open the ex run — a solid, collectable holo beyond the headline legends.
Latias (105/107)
The Eon sister as a holo rare, a natural companion piece to the Latios Gold Star for Eon-duo collectors.
Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)
Beyond the collector shine, EX Deoxys gave the format a genuine star attacker and a clever shapeshifting engine.
Rayquaza ex (102/107)
A premier attacker: its Dragon Boost power loads Energy onto it the moment it hits the Bench, setting up a big Spiral Blast a turn ahead of schedule.
Deoxys ex [Attack Forme] (98/107)
The Form Change power lets you swap your Active Deoxys ex for a different Forme — keeping Energy and damage — so you can flip from wall to finisher on demand. A rare, flexible toolbox in one line.
Salamence ex (103/107)
Free retreat for your whole team plus a Bench-sniping Flame Jet made it a slippery, board-controlling threat.
Rayquaza Star (107/107)
Not just a collector’s piece — its Holy Star attack dumps all its Energy to blast every one of your opponent’s Pokémon at once, a dramatic board-clearing trump card.
Trivia
- The set is built around Deoxys’ Formes, printing the DNA Pokémon in its Normal, Attack and Defense shapes — and the Deoxys ex share a Form Change Poké-Power that swaps between them mid-game, mirroring the video games.
- Its release was timed to the home-video launch of the seventh Pokémon movie, Destiny Deoxys, which staged the Deoxys-versus-Rayquaza clash the set restages in cards.
- It is home to the legendary Gold Star Rayquaza (107/107) — one of the most iconic and valuable cards of the vintage era — plus a second Gold Star in Latios (106).
- With Deoxys finally printed, the set rounded out the Generation III roster in the TCG that EX Hidden Legends had stopped just short of.
- Its Japanese title, Clash of the Blue Sky, plays on the sky-high battle between Rayquaza and Deoxys.
- A secret-rare Rocket’s Raikou ex carries the Team Rocket theme straight over from the previous expansion, EX Team Rocket Returns.
- Two theme decks shipped alongside it: Starcharge (Grass/Psychic) and Jetstream (Fire/Water/Lightning).
