Overview

XY Roaring Skies Rayquaza booster pack

Pokémon TCG: XY—Roaring Skies soared in on May 6, 2015 as the sixth XY expansion — a compact, Dragon-focused set of 108 cards plus two Secret Rares (110 total). Built from Japan’s エメラルドブレイク (Emerald Break) set (released March 14, 2015), it turned the spotlight on the sky: Rayquaza, Latios and a squadron of Dragon- and Flying-type Pokémon, headlined by the mighty Mega Rayquaza.

Small as it was, Roaring Skies left an outsized mark on competitive play. It launched the format-defining Mega Rayquaza deck, delivered the single most ubiquitous support Pokémon of the era in Shaymin-EX, and introduced the enormous Sky Field Stadium. Two theme decks — Aurora Blast (Water/Fire) and Storm Rider (Lightning/Grass) — rounded out the launch.

The skies split open. Mega Rayquaza descends on wings of emerald light, Sky Field stretches the battlefield wider than ever, and a legendary storm of Dragon-types takes flight — Roaring Skies is small in size but towering in impact.

Mega Rayquaza & ΔEvolution

The whole set orbits Mega Rayquaza, and its Colorless printing became one of the most dominant cards of the entire XY era.

M Rayquaza-EX — Colorless (#76)

M Rayquaza-EX — Colorless (#76)

The competitive titan: 220 HP, the Ancient Trait ΔEvolution (it can Mega Evolve on your first turn or the turn you play it — bypassing the normal no-evolving rule), and the attack Emerald Break, which does 30 damage for each of your Benched Pokémon. Named after its Japanese set, it turned a wide bench into overwhelming firepower.

Sky Field (#89)

Sky Field (#89)

The Stadium that made it all work: it lets each player keep up to 8 Benched Pokémon instead of 5. A full Sky Field bench pushed Emerald Break to 240 damage — enough to one-shot almost anything.

M Rayquaza-EX — Dragon (#61)

M Rayquaza-EX — Dragon (#61)

The set’s second Mega Rayquaza: a 230-HP Dragon with the ΔWild trait (−20 from Grass, Fire, Water and Lightning attackers) and Dragon Ascent, a raw 300-damage nuke that discards two Energy.

Rayquaza Spirit Link (#87)

Rayquaza Spirit Link (#87)

The Tool that lets Rayquaza-EX Mega Evolve without ending your turn — essential glue for the slower Dragon build.

Shaymin-EX: The Draw Engine

Shaymin-EX (#77)

Shaymin-EX (#77)

Quietly the most important card in the set. Its Set Up Ability lets you draw until you have six cards in hand the moment it hits your Bench — a plug-and-play draw engine in any deck. For years afterward, nearly every competitive list ran one or two Shaymin-EX, making it one of the most-played and most-reprinted support Pokémon in the game’s history. The only cost: like all EX, it gives up two Prizes when Knocked Out.

Dragons & Other Pokémon-EX

Roaring Skies is a Dragon showcase, backed by a strong supporting cast of EX:

Latios-EX / M Latios-EX (#58 / #59)

Latios-EX / M Latios-EX (#58 / #59)

The set’s second legendary Dragon line — a sleek attacker whose Full Arts are collector favourites.

Hydreigon-EX (#62)

Hydreigon-EX (#62)

A heavy-hitting Dragon that thrives on Double Dragon Energy, rewarding decks built around the type.

Thundurus-EX (#26)

Thundurus-EX (#26)

A Lightning attacker offering fast, efficient pressure and bench-support utility.

Gallade-EX / M Gallade-EX (#34 / #35)

Gallade-EX / M Gallade-EX (#34 / #35)

A Fighting-typed Mega with a hard-hitting body, adding a non-Dragon option to the set’s Mega line-up.

Trainers & Energy

Roaring Skies’ Trainers and Energy are as important as its Pokémon — several became long-term staples:

Trainers’ Mail (#92)

Trainers’ Mail (#92)

Dig through the top four cards of your deck for a Trainer Item — a consistency engine that saw play for years.

Mega Turbo (#86)

Mega Turbo (#86)

Accelerate a basic Energy from your discard pile onto a Mega or EX Pokémon — the fuel that kept Mega Rayquaza attacking.

Double Dragon Energy (#97)

Double Dragon Energy (#97)

A Special Energy that provides two units of any two types to a Dragon Pokémon — a huge acceleration tool for Dragon decks.

Winona (#96)

Winona (#96)

A Supporter that switches your Active and grabs a Flying Pokémon — the priciest Full Art Trainer in the set.

Wally (#94)

Wally (#94)

A Supporter that lets you evolve one of your Pokémon — a clever tempo play for evolution decks.

Products & Print Versions

Roaring Skies launched with booster packs in four artworks — Rayquaza, Latios, Gallade and Deoxys — plus two theme decks, Aurora Blast and Storm Rider. A Mega Rayquaza Elite Trainer Box, blister packs, tins and portfolios completed the range.

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards

Roaring Skies is a chase-heavy set for its size, driven almost entirely by Rayquaza. Values reflect near-mint singles and shift with the market.

M Rayquaza-EX — Full Art (#105)

M Rayquaza-EX — Full Art (#105)

The undisputed crown of the set and one of the most beloved Full Arts of the XY era — routinely its most expensive card by a wide margin.

Rayquaza-EX — Full Art (#104)

Rayquaza-EX — Full Art (#104)

The basic Rayquaza’s Full Art is a striking card in its own right and a strong second in value.

Winona — Full Art (#108)

Winona — Full Art (#108)

The priciest Full Art Trainer in the set — proof that a great illustration can outvalue far more famous names.

M Latios-EX — Full Art (#102)

M Latios-EX — Full Art (#102)

A gorgeous Dragon Full Art that has climbed steadily, anchoring the Latios collector line alongside Latios-EX FA (#101).

M Gallade-EX — Full Art (#100)

M Gallade-EX — Full Art (#100)

The Psychic Mega’s Full Art rounds out the set’s premium Megas with steady upward momentum.

Energy Switch — Secret Rare (#109)

Energy Switch — Secret Rare (#109)

One of two gold-bordered Item Secret Rares, and a surprisingly valuable one for such a humble card.

VS Seeker — Secret Rare (#110)

VS Seeker — Secret Rare (#110)

A gold Secret Rare reprint of the format-defining Supporter-recycling Item — beloved by players and collectors alike.

Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)

Few small sets have shaped a format like Roaring Skies. Its cards defined the 2015–2016 competitive season and remained Expanded staples for years.

M Rayquaza-EX — Colorless (#76)

M Rayquaza-EX — Colorless (#76)

The heart of the dominant Mega Rayquaza deck — ΔEvolution for a turn-one attack and Emerald Break scaling to 240 damage off a full Sky Field bench.

Shaymin-EX (#77)

Shaymin-EX (#77)

The universal draw engine. Set Up made decks vastly more consistent and Shaymin-EX became a four-of consideration in nearly every archetype of the era.

Sky Field (#89)

Sky Field (#89)

The 8-Bench Stadium that made Emerald Break terrifying — and a build-around card that spawned its own “bench-heavy” strategies.

Trainers’ Mail (#92)

Trainers’ Mail (#92)

Quiet but essential — the consistency glue that let fast combo decks find their pieces turn after turn.

Trivia & Points of Interest

  • An attack named after the set. M Rayquaza-EX’s Emerald Break shares its name with the Japanese set, エメラルドブレイク (Emerald Break) — the same wink the ORAS-era sets gave with Gaia Volcano and Tidal Storm.
  • Shaymin-EX changed everything. Set Up turned a tiny Basic Pokémon into the most-played draw engine of its generation; for years, “how many Shaymin?” was a real deck-building question.
  • Evolving on turn one. The ΔEvolution Ancient Trait let Mega Rayquaza break the game’s core “no evolving the turn you play a Basic / on turn one” rule, making the deck explosively fast.
  • A bigger battlefield. Sky Field expanded each Bench from 5 to 8 — the single change that made Emerald Break’s damage scaling so devastating.
  • Two Rayquazas, two Megas. The set printed both a Colorless and a Dragon Rayquaza-EX line, each with its own Mega Evolution and playstyle.
  • Gold reprints. The two Secret Rares are gold-bordered reprints of staple Items: Energy Switch (#109) and VS Seeker (#110).
