Synopsis
When a mysterious old man and Tapu Fini trap Ash and his Pokémon in a bubble, Kiawe must race to Akala Island and back with Tapu Lele’s scales before a water clock runs dry. With Lana and Sophocles’ research complete, Kiawe wants to prove himself to Tapu Fini, and he and Ash head for the Ruins of Hope, turning their walk across Poni Breaker Coast into a race that ends in a tie. Meanwhile, Mallow, Lillie and Sophocles visit Hapu, and Mallow tries out radish recipes for Aina’s Kitchen. At the flooded ruins, Ash proposes a Double Battle, and Kiawe accepts. Pikachu and Torracat face Turtonator and Marowak in a fierce exchange of Quick Attack, Fire Fang, Dragon Tail, Shell Trap, Shadow Bone and Flamethrower, until the two sides pause to admire each other and a strange mist rolls in.
Kiawe finds Ash and the Pokémon sealed inside a blue sphere. An old man appears with Tapu Fini and scolds Kiawe for battling on sacred ground. Tapu Fini drenches Kiawe and fastens a water clock to his wrist, and the old man tells him to bring back scales from Tapu Lele before the water runs out or his friends will suffer the consequences. Kiawe flies to Akala Island on Charizard. Tapu Lele accepts the challenge, sets up Psychic Terrain and overwhelms Charizard with Psybeam, sending it crashing into a cliff and clipping its wing. Remembering his grandfather’s training, Kiawe orders Aerial Ace, and Charizard climbs back into the sky and forces Tapu Lele into its shell. Impressed, the guardian gives Kiawe its scales. Meanwhile, at Hapu’s house, Mallow recreates fluffy radish fritters that remind Hapu of her grandfather.
Back at the coast, the old man offers to free Ash if Kiawe takes his place, claiming that Kiawe has abandoned him, but Ash refuses to leave. Kiawe lands just as Charizard collapses and sprints for the ruins, reaching Tapu Fini as the clock runs dry. Tapu Fini uses the scales to restore Charizard and presents Kiawe with a Flyinium Z, and the old man remarks that it will help Charizard spread its wings. Kiawe and Charizard perform Supersonic Skystrike for the first time, and Rotom, in its Laki wig, deduces that the whole day was a trial set by Tapu Fini. As the fog lifts, the guardian and the old man vanish. Hapu, who has been pretending she was not lonely, summons Golurk and Mudsdale, while on a distant cliff the old man and Kiawe’s grandfather watch, smile and disappear.
