Synopsis
Tapu Fini’s mist lets Mallow speak once more with her late mother and Torracat reunite with Stoutland, and Hapu’s courage earns her the guardian’s blessing as Poni Island’s new island kahuna. When Ash notices the old man from the previous day on the cover of a book, Hapu identifies him as her late grandfather, Sofu, and explains the legend that Tapu Fini can summon the spirits of the dead. Lillie reveals that Gladion hopes to see their father, and Hapu warns that people who enter the mist sometimes never return. Mallow abruptly leaves, and Lana explains to the others that Mallow’s mother fell ill and died. On a park bench, Mallow tells Lana that her mother gave her the Bounsweet that became Tsareena, and that her last words to her mother were that she hated her constant apologies. Tapu Fini watches from a distance as Lana comforts her.
That night everyone stays at Hapu’s home on the Ancient Poni Path, and a strange mist rolls in and separates the friends. Lillie finds Gladion within it, while Hapu realises that this is Tapu Fini’s mist and that her friends may be trapped. Ash and Torracat meet Stoutland, Torracat’s late mentor, who teaches Torracat Fire Blast. Mallow finds her mother, embraces her and apologises for her last words, and her mother replies that she should have thanked Mallow instead of apologising; Gracidea flowers bloom around them as Mallow thanks her for her life and for Tsareena. Hapu rides Mudsdale to the Ruins of Hope, dives to the altar and demands that Tapu Fini release her friends. When the guardian only dances, she orders Golurk’s Flash Cannon, but the attack fades before it lands.
Sofu’s spirit appears and tells Hapu that Tapu Fini has accepted her as the new kahuna because of her sincere effort to save her friends. Tapu Fini cries out, the mist clears, and Stoutland and Mallow’s mother vanish after their final farewells. In the grass, Mallow finds a wild Shaymin. Rotom identifies it as a Mythical Pokémon, and Mallow asks it to stay with her until the Gracidea season, which it happily agrees to do. Lillie and Gladion are disappointed not to have seen their father, but Hapu points out that if he did not appear in the mist he must still be alive somewhere, and Gladion leaves at once to tell Lusamine. Hapu reveals that Tapu Fini has chosen her as kahuna, and when Ash eagerly asks for a grand trial, she agrees to face him after the ritual that confirms her title.
