Synopsis
A mysterious darkness drains Alola’s Ultra Aura and its adults’ energy, and when the Ultra Guardians, now joined by Gladion, trace it to the Altar of the Sunne, Lunala and the menacing Necrozma emerge from an Ultra Wormhole. Far away in Ultra Space, Necrozma breaks free of shattering black crystals and flies towards Lunala and Nebby. In Alola, Professors Kukui and Burnet are listless, Sophocles has had no breakfast because his mother overslept, and the whole class reports tired adults. Kukui leaves the lesson on the Manalo Festival—a celebration of an eclipse that comes every twenty-one years—to Kiawe, and Lillie retells the legend of the Blinding One: its overflowing light gave birth to Alola, but it used up its light, turned black and slept until the emissaries of the sun and moon shared their light and it flew to the far edges of the sky.
The class concludes that the emissaries were Solgaleo and Lunala and that the sky’s edge lies beyond an Ultra Wormhole. At lunch, everyone shares food with Sophocles. Around the island, Nurse Joy, Officer Jenny and even Jessie and James are lounging about, Ash and Kiawe find that their Z-Moves fizzle without Z-Power, and Poipole draws the Prism Star symbol in the sand. At Aether Paradise, Professor Burnet discovers a tiny Ultra Wormhole draining Alola’s Ultra Aura, which a disheveled Lusamine believes is sapping everyone’s motivation, before the exhausted staff collapse. Meanwhile, a camouflaged Team Rocket helicopter led by Matori and Gozu approaches on Giovanni’s orders, Gladion calms his frightened Silvally, and inside the wormhole Necrozma knocks out Solgaleo with Prismatic Laser and chases Lunala.
The next day, Ash presses the alarm in Kukui’s absence, and a weary Lusamine sends the Ultra Guardians to the Altar of the Sunne, where she, Wicke, Faba and Burnet are waiting. A gust announces the seventh member: Gladion, riding Noivern in a slightly different uniform, who warns that the coming Ultra Beast could be the most dangerous yet and is surprised to learn that Poipole is one too. Wicke explains that children and Pokémon seem unaffected by the drain, and Faba—once Wicke drags him away from his game console—unveils a machine that can disperse the dark clouds using Z-Power. Ash, Kiawe, Lana and Gladion fire their Z-Moves into it, the clouds clear, and inside the altar Lusamine finds a mural of the Blinding One, Solgaleo, Lunala and Trainers using Z-Moves. As the wormhole opens before the moon, Lunala emerges, followed by Necrozma.
