Forging Forest Friendships! is the 37th episode of Pokémon the Series: XY, the seventeenth season of the Pokémon anime, and the 832nd episode of the English dub overall (Japanese episode 838, Bulbapedia code XY038). It first aired in Japan on 7 August 2014 and in the United States on 4 October 2014. It falls within the season’s New wings & other worlds stretch (EP35–EP38).
Synopsis
Froakie and Hawlucha, who clash during training, learn to work together to rescue Ash from a Trevenant that is guarding a Bonsly and a Sudowoodo. Froakie learns Cut while saving Pikachu from a falling log, but in a practice Double Battle against Clemont’s Chespin and Bunnelby, the proud Hawlucha takes hits without dodging and the two partners end up attacking each other.
Ash devises a combination, the Super Flying Cut, in which Froakie rides Hawlucha and leaps off to use Cut before Hawlucha’s Flying Press, but Froakie rejects Hawlucha’s apology. Then a wild Trevenant drags Ash into the forest; tangled in vines and arguing, the two Pokémon break free only by crashing into each other, and agree to rescue Ash together.
Froakie’s Bubble blinds Trevenant and blocks its Shadow Claw, but the combination misses, and when Ash, facing Will-O-Wisp, vows to protect his friends, Trevenant backs down; it was guarding a Bonsly and a Sudowoodo caught in Team Rocket’s electrified net, which Pikachu’s Iron Tail cuts. Froakie’s Water Pulse beats Pumpkaboo, the Super Flying Cut defeats Inkay, Trevenant’s Wood Hammer frees Pikachu, and Thunderbolt sends Team Rocket flying.
